The Wolf of the North Trilogy

Rate this book
***All three parts of the Bestselling Wolf of the North Trilogy***

It has been generations since the Northlands have seen a hero worthy of the title. Many have made the claim, but few have lived to defend it. Timid, weak, and bullied, Wulfric is as unlikely a candidate as there could be.

A chance encounter with an ancient and mysterious object awakens a latent gift, and Wulfric’s life changes course. Against a backdrop of war, tragedy, and an enemy whose hatred for him knows no bounds, Wulfric will be forged from a young boy, into the Wolf of the North. This is his tale.

Hi, thanks for visiting my page. I’m Duncan, a fantasy and science fiction author from Ireland. I love to blend my passion for Medieval and Renaissance history with the freedom of fantasy environments to create fast paced heroic fantasy adventures with compelling characters and high stakes—exactly the types of stories that I love to read, so I hope you’ll like them too.

You can find more of my online hangouts and my work at the links below. Don’t forget to sign up for my news letter if you want to keep up to date on all my news and new releases!

I’m delighted to announce my most recent trilogy with Tor, Dragonslayer - a heroic fantasy tale about redemption, revenge, and megalomania. Oh, and dragons. Plenty of dragons! The entire trilogy - Dragonslayer, Knight of the Silver Circle, and Servant of the Crown - is now out in the wild, and available to purchase. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

My next trilogy is already well under way, and I've a couple of new projects that occur in different worlds (and genres!) that I'm very excited about, and hope to start releasing this coming Spring 2021.If that’s too long to wait, then please check out my other books, all of which are currently available!

Society of the Sword

The Tattered Banner was one of Buzzfeed's 12 Greatest Fantasy Books of 2013!

In a world where magic is outlawed, ability with a sword is prized above all else. For Soren this means the chance to live out his dreams.

Plucked from a life of poverty, he is given a coveted place at Ostenheim's Academy of Swordsmanship, an opportunity beyond belief.

Opportunity is not always what it seems however, and gifts rarely come without conditions. Soren becomes an unwitting pawn in a game of intrigue and treachery that could cost him not just his dreams, but also his life.

Wolf of the North

It has been generations since the Northlands have seen a hero worthy of the title. Many have made the claim, but few have lived to defend it. Timid, weak, and bullied, Wulfric is as unlikely a candidate as there could be.

A chance encounter with an ancient and mysterious object awakens a latent gift, and Wulfric’s life changes course. Against a backdrop of war, tragedy, and an enemy whose hatred for him knows no bounds, Wulfric will be forged from a young boy, into the Wolf of the North. This is his tale.

If that’s not enough, I’ve a standalone novel, and some shorter work to give you a taste of what I write. You can get a free digital copy of the Marcher Lord if you sign up for my news letter!

excellent

Not a Viking tale as I had expected but gripping and full of battles and honour debts. Fast paced but very well connected so it flows from storyline to story. And a good ending!

This was my second go at this trilogy and I am so glad I gave it another go!! It’s slow to start which is why I returned it the first time. Then, when it popped up again, I thought OKAY! I’LL READ IT! And, I’m really glad I did. I listened to it on Audible and the narration was impeccable. I was laughing, almost crying, cheering, getting emotional. It was a really great read.

I am always on the lookout for audiobook series to listen to, so when I stumbled across Hamilton’s trilogy, all available as a single download, I didn’t think twice. Like many fantasy fans, I grew up on the genre (beginning with David Eddings’ ‘The Belgariad’ and others) and am always on the lookout for another.

With my literary hat on, I can’t help but note that this series conforms to a large number of the genre stereotypes: a bildungsroman for a young, male adventurer; a storytelling figure; focus on plot over character development; perhaps more attention paid to the story than the quality of the writing; etc.

However, that’s all by the by, because I still really enjoyed the trilogy, and found myself invested in the story despite it being well-worn. To be honest, I think I liked it more because it feels like it knows it is well-worn, but is that way because it wants to be. Although many purposefully try to, not every story must break from genre expectations – and, in many cases, they have become expectations because readers like them and want more of them. I’ve spent many years studying fiction, and even wrote one of my dissertations on genre expectations in fantasy fiction, and I still love them, so yes, definitely worth a read/listen.

This was decent. First read it 2018 and I gave it 5 stars then. Re-reading in March 2025 as eggs cost $7/doz and post-pandemic life settling to a new, dark Bizarro land of Trelon Mumpnk burgeoning-apocalypse this is much, much darker than when I first read it; due to the uncanny prediction of self-indulgence, political intrigue killing any breath of humanity from politics and lack of accountability, it’s…well, not really an escape.

It reads now like the passing of a Golden Age, the earth being depleted of resources again, the survivors of the first millennium rape of the land all but dead memories and the world barely fit for living. Growing up in the Cold War, I never thought I would make it to my current age, and this…well, the new age doesn’t begin at the end. It’s a more realistic ending for a book, which isn’t exactly why I’m reading fantasy.

Good job world creation, I wish a slightly happier ending could have happened.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Trilogy and loved the various characters, which were all interesting and well thought out.
The reason for 4 stars is because I so desperately wanted a happy ending for Adelaide and Wulfric, but the writer made it bittersweet and I am miffed.
Perhaps when I read it again, I’ll feel differently.
Mine was the Audible version, performed brilliantly by Simon Vance.

Simply—Outstanding!

To not read this trilogy (as a fantasy fiction fan), you’d be robbing yourself of a truly epic tale.

I ‘hate’ the anti-hero, despise him, now, still, after finishing the book! That is truly the craft of an outstanding author, to create such emotion in the readers mind!

A very good wimp to hero story, although very frustrating in some parts because the hero does not understand himself as such. Good ending for the trilogy, definitely a story you want to read in full and not just a single one of the books.

4.5. This was basically a Ken Follet series in its epic feel except here the protagonists do not win in the end (not in a way that is satisfying) and the bad guys don’t always get their comeuppance in the way they should l. Thoroughly enjoyed it although the ending was mid.

Overall, I enjoyed the trilogy, although it follows very familiar tropes and plots. The writing was simple, and the audiobook narration by Simon Vance was first rate.

It took a bit of persistence to continue with the story, but I finally finished it and am not disappointed! The ending was better than I could have thought!
