The key to solving a kidnapping… Lies buried in her past.
After witnessing her aunt’s abduction, veterinarian Talia Knowles will do anything to find her—even as the kidnappers set their sights on her. But missing memories from her past might hold answers she didn’t know she had. And relying on neighboring ranch hand and ex-marine Noah Landers could be the key to finding her aunt and discovering the culprit’s true motives.
New-to-me-author (this is her first Love Inspired Suspense) and I'm a fan! Loved the pacing and the way Aleckson balances not only the romance and the suspense, but the action points in the story as well. None of the elements overwhelm, but rather work together in harmony to deliver an incredibly riveting read. I plopped myself down in front of the fan and didn't budge an inch until I finished the last page, it's that good.
Talia is a unique heroine...I almost get a Temperance Brennan (tv show Bones) vibe from her. She has that same kind of disconnect with social interactions and is hyper focused in her field -- veterinarian extraordinaire and wild mustang rescuer. Some of the conversations she and Noah have are pretty funny and I love how he just rolls with her quirkiness, accepting who she is with grace and humour.
'How did she leave it with God? How did she move on?'
This was a very nice inspirational suspense novel from Michelle Aleckson. A very interesting premise, very believable, and I did not even guess it at all! Totally took me by surprise who the culprit was. I enjoyed the characterization of the female protagonist and how the author took those characteristics. The action was virtually non-stop the entire way. I was on the edge of my seat. Well done!
My thanks to the publisher and author for a copy of this book. The opinion here is my own.
After veterinarian Talia Knowles finds out her Aunt has been kidnapped she will do anything to find her! And relying on her neighbors ranch hand and ex-marine Noah Landers to help in the search little does she know there is secrets her Aunt has kept from her! This is such a great suspense and page-turner that will keep you reading until the end I was given an ARC copy of this book and this was my own honest words to this review! I picked it up and could not put it down I highly recommend this book It was such a great book! If you haven't read you should you won't be disappointed! This is a must read!
This was such an awesome read! From the first page, I was completely enthralled with this one and could not put it down. The mystery of Talia's backstory and who was after her was super entertaining and the twists and turns this story takes kept me guessing. Loved this one!
I received this book from the author and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
Hidden Ranch Peril by Michelle Aleckson is an intense page-turner that will knock your socks off. Talia Knowles watches as her aunt is abducted from their family ranch. She rides to the neighbors where she runs into ranch hand Noah Landers. She and Noah search for her aunt all the while knowing that they want one thing and that is her. Memories from the past keep surfacing from when she was a little girl. Everything she thought she knew from the past might be wrong, but can these memories help her find out who the culprits are and what they want? I really enjoyed this romantic suspense. Talia sees things differently and I liked that. I love how they each had to learn the hard lesson of forgiveness. I think you will enjoy Talia and Noah, so read the book. LOL. As always, I let you know if there is an epilogue. Guess what? There is! I enjoyed finding out what was in the cards for these two. I hope we get a story about Justin (Noah's friend). If you like christian romantic suspense then I think you'll enjoy this story. It's intense! I was given a copy by the author, but all opinions are my very own!
Michelle Aleckson races right out of the gate with her Love Inspired Suspense debut, Hidden Ranch Peril. They say every family has secrets, and for Talia Knowles…well, she’s going to find out some big ones. As she’s coming back from a horseback ride, she’s shocked to hear her aunt’s gunshot signal for danger. She knows what she’s supposed to do, but instead heads toward the ranch, it coming into view just in time for her to see Aunt Sally kidnapped! Heading to the neighboring ranch, she meets Noah Landers. She can’t shake the feeling he looks familiar, but no time to figure that out yet. Noah immediately offers to help her find Sally. He’s a stranger, but…somehow he feels like he’s not. So the chase begins. They realize someone is after Talia, too. They are on the run, simultaneously trying to find Sally, while keeping Talia safe. She feels like he’s her hero. He’s a former Marine burdened with the death of someone he was tasked to protect. He feels anything but a hero. But as they try to outrun her pursuers, feelings grow. Can he trust her with his own secrets? Can she trust this virtual stranger? Can they put their faith in the Lord to see them through? I loved this riveting story. Plus, it has my favorite thing…an epilogue! I am crossing my spurs this will be the start to a series! I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.
I wasn't given a copy of this by the author, so the likelihood of this being WAY the heck more honest just increased exponentially. How 'bout that?
This. S.U.C.K.E.D.. I mean, some 'Love, Inspired' authors just cannot write, but this author takes that as a challenge and RUNS with it. It's just ridiculous how awful the writing is, here. So bad, in fact, that this book has convinced me to stop looking for LI Suspense novels at thrift stores - because OBVIOUSLY there's a reason it was given away without looking like it's been cracked open more than a few pages. And I *GET* it, now. Really.
The book opens with Talia on horseback, hearing three gunshots. Her aunt always told her that three gunshots meant 'git yerself to the Polechenski brother's ranch - RUN!!'. So naturally Talia knows that this is Plan #23 (←I kid you not, author's words, not mine) of the various scenarios Aunt Sally gave her as a small child to execute, should three shots be fired.
Wait, WHAT?!?!?!
Oh, yeah. That's where we start. And it only goes downhill from there.
She IGNORES the three-shots-n-run rule and rides back to a ridge where obviously nobody would see her or hear her prancing, out-of-breath horse, and watched six men attack her aunt (SIX. It required SIX men. Really??!?!) and load her into one of two SUVs, and drive away. Because Aunt Sally hasn't lived there all her life, and hasn't had the SAME information the entire time about Talia's whereabouts... but NOW - NOW - they have to kidnap her. For no good gol'darn reason other than the author has decided it should happen.
Talia has binoculars and watches the whole thing go down up-close, but doesn't bother with license plate numbers, because the author just isn't s-m-r-t enough to think of something like that. Sees them haul Aunt Sally away. Gadzooks!!!!!
So instead of going to the ranch to see if Aunt Sally left a message or anything of use to her (I mean, hey - we've already ignored the 3-shot rule, why not keep that going?), *NOW* she turns tail and races across the vast Idaho unknown to the Polechenski ranch... which is strangely empty, because first thing in the near pre-dawn morning, EVERY. SINGLE. RANCH. HAND has gone to auction. ????? Seriously?!!!!! GAH, the writing!!
But wait, there *IS* a guy there. It's Noah, who has been looking for her for SEVEN MONTHS. He'd just talked to her Aunt last night, though - it took him SEVEN MONTHS to bother with that, apparently. When you're looking for someone, never go directly to her only surviving relative... save that for half a YEAR later. Because grrrrrrrrreat writing!!
"Who're you?!" "I'm Noah Landers." Crickets... no recognition, because the author says Talia's so stupid she doesn't remember 'begging for horsey rides' from him when they were children. ?!?!?! "And if he wasn't mistaken, she was on the verge of panic." ON. THE VERGE?!?!?!?
GAHHHHHH!! I can't stand the stupidity in this woman's writing!!!!
He couldn't tell her anything, because Aunt Sally told him not to, and after all "she'd been with Sally all this time". IF SHE WAS WITH SALLY ALL THIS TIME, WHY DID IT TAKE HIM SEVEN MONTHS TO FIND HER??????? ARRRRGGGGHHHH>>>!!!!
Oh, and by the way, she's not Talia Knowles, she Anna Coleson, or so we're told in an aside. And her family was exploded when she was little. Because *TOTALLY* believable in every way, and we're batting a hundred, here.
((((Sigh.))))
The writing is even worse. For example: "Talia nudged the mare's ribs. The saddle creaked as she braced her legs, and they were off. A hard gallop until they reached the crest of the hill." ← Sentence fragment, anyone? And that's on pg 8... the FIRST numbered page in the dang book!!!
Pg 10: "Help. She needed to get help for Sally. Wonder if this had anything to do with weird phone call..." ← Annnnnd that would be not only a sentence fragment, but in THE WRONG BLOODY TENSE, for the love of all that's holy.
I can't. No, I REFUSE to waste time on something so poorly written, badly plotted, ridiculously laid out... I'm DONE.
And I only made it to PAGE TWELVE. This may be a new record.
Please. Please, please, save yourself time and money and frustration and just read something else.
Hidden Ranch Peril is written by Michelle Aleckson. This is her first Love Inspired Suspense story. This was a very action packed book with a lot of twists and turns thrown into it. Talia is a veterinarian. She’s grown up with her Aunt Sally. Talia grew up feeling different then other kids. She was told her family died in a car accident and her Aunt stepped in to raise her. They moved around a lot and Talia had trouble connecting with anyone human. However she had a strong passion and connection to horses and other animals. When she is visiting her Aunt’s ranch one day she hears three gunshots. The gunshots were a signal that Talia needs to run to neighboring ranch for help. So she does, on her beloved horse Peaches.
Noah Landers is a former marine who Carrie’s around a huge weight on his shoulders. He feels that his name is tarnished since his father was suspected to have been involved in Talia’s families deaths. Although he knew her as Anna. Her uncle, is looking for her and offering a huge reward to locate her. Noah has a lot to potentially use and the reward would be helpful.
Talia runs right into Noah at the neighboring ranch. He recognizes her immediately. He wants to help find her Aunt Sally and he also tells Talia more about her past.
However someone wants to kill Talia. They won’t stop until they do. Noah wants to keep her safe but is afraid of letting her down. It seemed that wherever they went danger was sure to follow.
I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed trying to figure out who was behind everything. Who killed Talia’s family? Was Noah’s dad responsible for it? Can Talia and Noah figure it out in time and find Aunt Sally?
The author hit it out of the park with this book. This was a book I read in one sitting and didn’t want to be interrupted while I read. The characters are well written. The plot is suspenseful and full of heart pounding action.
Thank You to the author for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily. Talia Knowles witnesses her aunt's kidnapping. She wants to rush in and help, but she knows she will be of no use to her aunt if she rushes into the fray. So, she does what her aunt instructed her to do in the event of an emergency. She goes to the neighboring ranch where she finds Noah Landers. Noah knows who Talia is, but she has no clue that their paths intersected many years before. Noah wants to keep her safe because he feels it is penance for his failure to protect someone before. He is also running from his past. As they go on the run, Talia soon learns that her life is nothing like she thought. Everything she believed is a lie. The character dynamics are intriguing as the author reveals a little more to the story in each chapter until the shocking conclusion. This one packs quite the punch from the front cover to the back cover. It was action packed as they run for their very lives. There is also an inspirational message throughout the book, but one particular message spoke to me and that was the power of forgiveness. The characters are discussing forgiveness, and this quote spoke to me. "Talia, that woman was killed because of me. How am I supposed to forgive myself for that? The same way you told me to earlier. You take it to the One who forgave us. You don't need to keep carrying around the blame. As much as I need to learn to forgive, maybe you need to learn how to be forgiven." Wow... those are powerful words. I am looking forward to reading more from Michelle in the future. She knows how to write a suspense-filled mystery.
My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Hidden Ranch Peril. Michelle is a new Author for LIS and I really enjoyed her book. I look forward to her next one. This story is well-written, action-packed, and full of suspense. I know you are going to love it. Veterinarian Talia Knowles is out riding when she hears the three-shot signal. The signal means to run to the neighbors for help. She must find out what is going on. Two men are in the process of abducting her aunt. She hears her aunt tell them she doesn't know where the girl is. Why would anyone be looking for her? After the abduction, she runs to the neighbor's ranch but the only man there is a man she's never met but he knows her. Can she trust him? Does this have anything to do with her missing memories? Ex-Marine Noah Landers is a new ranch hand. He's been looking for Talia for years. She was his neighbor as a four-year-old who followed him everywhere. She disappeared after her family was killed. He finally finds her and her aunt but Sally, the aunt made him promise not to tell her of her past. Does he keep the promise when Sally is in danger.? Can he keep Talia safe? A dangerous journey as Talia becomes the men's target. God has a plan for these two, a plan for hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a good plan for peace and not for destruction even in this time of political chaos. Give Him your heart and watch Him work in your situation.
I really, really wanted to give this book 4 stars...I just couldn't quite get there.
Don't get me wrong, I liked Noah and Talia right away. I liked the fact that they had a past in common, that the connection was instantaneous and that they were thrown together to keep each other safe and solve a mystery.
The mystery, is the death of Talia's family, when she was 4. Since she's almost thirty now, that's a lot of years to make up for. But if its action you're looking for, where the characters are in danger every time they turn around, this is a book for you! I liked the fast pacing of the novel and I loved the key that lead to ultimately solving the mystery.
My main complaint was ultimately the character development. I have no problem with instant (or soon after) love, and this novel takes place in such a short amount of time there isn't a lot of room for a lot of development. But I don't know, something was just...missing for me. I wanted to see Talia give faith a chance or Noah clear his dad's name to the public. Something to get the closure both of them were seeking.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a good book. I was just hoping for a little more depth, I guess. A little more substance.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Talia has always sought refuge with horses. They've made her feel safe and secure. It was only natural for her to become a veterinarian specializing in equine care. Talia doesn't think she'll ever marry, she doesn't think she has the right qualities that a man looks for in a woman.
Noah is afraid he'll turn out to be a crook, like his dad. He has survived several tours as a Marine, trying to prove his worth.
Talia and Noah have the same childhood trauma event in common. Talia's family was killed and Noah's dad was killed at the same time. Noah remembers, but Talia doesn't. Now, someone is trying to harm Talia, Noah makes it his business to keep her safe.
I'm grateful for the complimentary copy of #hiddenranchperil from #michellealeckson I was under no obligation to post a review. #mystery #thriller #favoritebooks #coverlove #loveinspiredsuspense #newreleasebooks
"The galloping hoofbeats matched the thundering pulse in her head. Three shots. Run for safety. But then what? Help."
Thus begins a debut Harlequin Love Inspired novel by Michelle Aleckson. It's full of the sweet love and non-stop action expected in a Harlequin Love Inspired Romantic-Suspense. Including love that "bubbled inside, like a slow flow of hot fudge over ice cream," and identity angst, "Was he a hero or a traitor? What kind of blood ran through Noah's veins...?" It includes humor, "she just had to pretend Noah was a horse and she'd be fine," when Talia, the vet, has to sew up his bullet wound. And it is full of questions about faith and forgiveness, both giving and receiving. "I may want certainty, but truth is more important." "Guess that's why it's called, faith."
I had the honor of pre-reading this book and recommend it to all Harlequin fans. This is the beginning of a new series to love.
Emotions could not be trusted. Truth was important. Facts didn’t change. They weren’t relative or subjective. That’s why they made sense. Forgiveness can’t be earned. Trust is earned. These were some of the realities that Talia lived with. Why was she so very black and white? Perhaps this is part of those memories that are so far beneath the surface, they will never return.
Constantly on the move, never putting down roots until Mustang Sally Ranch. Between kidnapping, shots fired, fire bombing and abductions, you will not even consider setting this book aside until you have reached the conclusion - one that is totally unexpected. The author has done a fabulous job of keeping you at the edge of your seat - a story of loss, love and forgiveness.
This early copy was received through Love Inspired Suspense. These thoughts and impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.
I have read some of this author’s books under the tutelage of Susan May Warren, and they were fantastic! I found this story riveting, even tho I figured out The Who, and mostly the why of the story. She writes with heart and humor. This story is action packed and kept me turning to see what would happen next!
Talia Knowles’s aunt is kidnapped while she views from afar. She will do anything to find her and enlists the neighboring ranch’s ranch hand, Noah Landers, to help her find Aunt Sally. They discover that Talia is who they really want, but The Who and Why are a total mystery. Aunt Sally has been keeping secrets from Talia that apparently is putting her in danger. Can they find Sally and find out what is going on?
Read KAV’s review as I too kept comparing Talia’s personality to Temperance Brennan of The tv series, “Bones!”
4.5 stars "The galloping hoofbeats matched the thundering pulse in her head. Three shots. Run for safety." Hidden Ranch Peril by author Michelle Aleckson literally starts out with a bang, and the suspense never lets up! "I'm Noah Landers. I've been looking for you for the last seven months." "He had always known her as Anna Coleson. The age-progression software didn't do her justice." "She was just too cute as she tried to make sense of the intricacies of human social interaction."
Solving a decades old mystery, memories resurfacing, a sweet romance, Hidden Ranch Peril is everything you'd love in a page turning romantic suspense!
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own!
I enjoyed this steady pace, clean romantic suspense story. It had lots of action and twists throughout. Although veterinarian Talia feels awkward around people and prefers animals; as readers we discover some of her traumatic childhood and how the loss of her family changes her. She has a hard time connecting with people and having faith in God or others, but she slowly starts to come around by the end of the book. I enjoyed the reunion of childhood friends Talia and Noah and how they worked together to find her missing Aunt and run from danger. I really enjoyed this faith filled story! Great characters and interesting story that kept me engaged from beginning to end. I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
"He wanted to be the one to hold her when she was upset, ride with her in the wilds of the Owyhees and see the smile that she kept hidden so well. He was in as much danger as she was." Talia is a woman with a mysterious past. She doesn't remember the car accident that killed her family, but is thankful for her aunt, that stepped in to care for her. They moved frequently growing up, but certain things have always stayed the same: her aunt's love and care, her love of animals, and her desire for normalcy. When she witnesses her aunt get kidnapped, she receives help from an unlikely source, who seems to know more about her past than she does. Talia needs help so she accepts help from this mysterious friend, and this kicks off an adventure of mystery and romance. This was an exciting story! I was so intrigued by Talia and her past, as well as, the mystery of who was after her. Noah was a great hero, and his own pursuit of discovering who he was and letting go of the past, added so much depth to this story. The writing was well done, adding layers that kept me guessing and making me not want to put it down! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Aleckson delivers a great story starring realistic characters.
Romantic suspense fans are in for a crazy ride across several states while Talia discovers the secrets of her past from a childhood friend she didn’t remember…until he stood in front of her.
Lots of peril, but I was hoping for more horses. Talia is a unique shero, and I found her character journey quite believable.
As for the suspense, I had it figured out nearly from chapter one, but that didn’t keep me from getting palpitations during the action scenes.
**I received a copy of this book from the author and have chosen to voluntarily post this honest review.
This is an excellent, edge of your seat book! Michelle Aleckson has written a fast paced, hard to put down story with unexpected twists. Hidden Ranch Peril grabbed my attention from the start and held it through until the end. There’s a great balance of suspense, fear, hope and faith throughout the book. Veterinarian, Talia Knowles and ex-marine, Noah Landers find themselves working together to find out who wants Talia dead. Uncovering the truth is top priority. I highly recommend this book. My thanks to Love Inspired Suspense/Michelle Aleckson for an advanced reader copy of this book. I was asked only for an honest review. The views stated here are mine alone.
Michelle Aleckson's story of an isolated vet and a broken, ex-military hero digs deep into the private selves of both hero and heroine while the plot rushes ahead at breakneck speed to answer a series of unanswered questions concerning the explosion that killed the heroine Talia's family and the role the hero Noah's dad played in the tragedy. Add in a plethora of horses and the question of when, if ever, lying is acceptable, and you get a humdinger of a story you won't want to miss.
I received an ARC from the author, but all opinions are my own.
Disclaimer: I rarely read Harlequin/Love Inspired because genre romance is not my jam. I also don’t usually care for suspense. But I received this book from a friend and was pleasantly surprised. Talia is a pretty unique and intriguing heroine (which I definitely didn’t expect from a Love Inspired book). Noah is just the right mix of sweet, sincere, and tough. The action is nonstop and the pacing spot on. I started it this afternoon and read it straight through. My only question now is: Will side character Justin get his own story? I certainly hope so!
This is an intriguing story of a veterinarian, Talia, who discovers her name is really Anna and the lady who raised her is not her aunt but her nanny! You'll find lots of action as secrets are revealed in Hidden Ranch Peril! A stuffed animal from Talia's childhood plays a major role in the book! I loved Noah who worked to overcome his childhood memories. I recommend Hidden Ranch Peril to others who enjoy suspense. I received a complimentary e-book from the author. Michelle Aleckson is a new author to watch for! This is my honest opinion.
Michelle Aleckson created a great story with unique characters!
Talia Knowles’ aunt is abducted! With the kidnappers after her, ex-marine Noah Landers tries to protect her while finding the key to her aunt’s disappearance. Will they uncover the kidnappers motives and find her aunt?
I really enjoyed reading Talia and Noah’s story. Talia is very unique and genuine. She is one of my favorite characters!
First time reading this author and now she's on my list as a favorite. This story has such twist and turns. Which is great. The intrigue was awesome. I couldn't put it down. You won't be sorry reading this book. Looking forward to other books by this author.
The action starts in the opening scenes when three shots are fired that signify "run for safety." The action continues in each chapter when you wonder what is going to happen to Talia Knowles and Noah Landers and who is after them. Noah has answers to Talia's past and they must stay alive to order to find out the truth about who killed her family and why. Definitely a suspense filled story.
Lots of suspense and a good mystery to solve. The author did a good job of building the suspense and developing the mystery. I truly enjoyed reading this book and could hardly put it down. I highly recommend it it you want a challenging story that will keep you enthralled.
Hidden Ranch Peril grabs the reader’s attention from the beginning and pulls them in deeper with each twist and turn. There is humor, love and faith intertwined in a mystery you won’t be able to put down.
