Surprise Play

Rate this book
An innocent gift has the power to change everything

Malcolm Ward is a retired wide-receiver, NFL offensive line coach, and husband to one of the best wide-receivers in the NFL. His life is hectic and the last thing he expects is to walk into the bedroom one afternoon to find his husband sleeping with the pacifier Malcolm had jokingly given him a decade before.

Ryder had never intended to let his husband know that the gag-gift had become one of his most cherished possessions. He definitely hadn’t planned on ever talking about it, much less letting Malcolm see him using it. Unfortunately, he’s left with no choice when he wakes up from a nap to find his husband came home early.

Malcolm quickly discovers something Ryder has missed his entire life. How does he get his husband to believe that far from hating his pacifier, Malcolm is ready to be the Daddy Ryder didn’t know he needed?

***Surprise Play was released as part of the 2020 Dirty Daddies Anthology. This version has been re-edited and has had approximately 12k words added throughout the book.

This 32k word short novel is a standalone, football, Daddy/boy romance.

Quote:
“I watched as he pushed the pacifier into his mouth, then chuckled as my six-foot-two-inch, NFL star husband nearly skipped out of my office. He had no idea how cute he was with his binkie in his mouth and blanket trailing behind him like a cape.”

💭 WHAT the actual fuck did I just witness 😭😂 Like—excuse me??? A whole damn NFL gladiator out here toddling around with his binkie like he’s auditioning for Baby’s First Touchdown?? 💀💀💀

I swear the way this man went from “I destroy grown men for a living” to “teehee I’m skipping with my blankie cape” had me CHOKING on my own oxygen 😭🫠 The WHIPLASH??? The ABSOLUTE POWER this scene has over me???

Bro is SIX FOOT TWO and acting like the world’s deadliest preschooler—and Malcolm is just sitting there like “Yeah that’s my cute little baby boy, what about it?” 😩😍

This is PEAK DADDY-LITTLE ENERGY.
10/10 would watch this man skip into traffic with his pacifier again 😌🍼🏈🧸✨

Quote:
“I like taking care of you. I love making you happy. I like when I feel like you need me. When you curl up with me. When you let me tuck you in. I enjoy those moments. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been trying to picture you as my boy and I can see it so clearly. It shocked me at first. But when I fixed your binkie today, I felt invincible.”

💭 The way this man said “I like when you need me” had me whispering “Yes Daddy” to my EMPTY ROOM 😭🫠

And THEN—
“When I fixed your binkie today, I felt invincible.”
INVINCIBLE???
BABY, I SCREAMED. I ASCENDED. I SAW MY ANCESTORS DOING THE WAVES. 🍼🌊💀

He’s over here unlocking god-mode from adjusting a damn pacifier, like “step aside Avengers, I just leveled up through nurturing.” 😭✨

Quotes: ⚠️ Spoilers ⛔️

Not satisfied with only one result, I typed the words adult pacifier into the search bar and proceeded to forget all about Ryder on the other side of the couch. In milliseconds, thousands of results populated, every one of them surprising to me.

There was a chance I’d taken one too many hits to the head during my playing days because it took me too long to figure out that for a vast supply, there needed to be a vast demand.
-
“Do you want me to make pancakes, or do you want me to order them?” I wasn’t picky. Pancakes weren’t my favorite food. If we ordered dinner, I could get something different for myself.
Ryder’s face lit up and he gave me big puppy eyes. “Your pancakes are my favorite.”
Only because I put chocolate chips in them. “Okay.” Shay was going to have my balls.
Ryder leaned up and kissed my cheek. “Thank you, Mal. You’re the best.”
I didn’t need my balls that badly.
-
How did I ask my husband if he was a little?
-
His pinkie ran over the scratched plastic and almost-missing wolf logo as he thought. “You don’t hate it?”
“Hate? Absolutely not.” There were a lot of things I thought about that pacifier, but hate wasn’t one of them. I didn’t think he was ready to hear that I’d fallen a little more in love with him as I’d lain in our bed listening to the little sucking sounds he’d made while sleeping.
-
“Come on, babe. Time to get dressed,” I said as I exited the closet. My words cut off suddenly when I saw him with his pacifier between his lips, his eyes raking over my body. He’d lost his sweats while I’d picked out clothes for him and was sitting cross-legged on the bed in just his underwear and a workout shirt.

Why did I find him sitting on the bed with his pacifier in his mouth both sweet and sexy? Big green eyes stared back at me and I was pretty sure I melted into a puddle of goo. My stomach flipped, my cock hardened, and my heart rate picked up. There was something innocent, sexy, and beautiful about my husband… even with his pacifier.
-
Calling Malcolm Daddy shouldn’t have made my cock stir in my pants, but it did. And judging by the way he then tried to inconspicuously adjust himself, the word had the same effect on him. Interesting.
-
“I like doing things for you. I always have. I keep telling you that. I like making meals for you and making you smile. I like seeing you relaxed and knowing that what I’m doing, however directly or indirectly, is making you happy and allowing you to have fun. Those things are enjoyable to me.”

I looked up at the ceiling, trying to get my thoughts straight. “Being your Daddy is better than birthday or Christmas gifts. When you call me Daddy, I feel special because I know that no one else can be that for you. I don’t think I could ever be bored being your Daddy.”
-
My hard cock stood upright for a few seconds before slowly coming to rest on my stomach. Malcolm watched it fall, then ran his calloused thumb over my slit, gathering the precum that had collected there. “I love how you so readily show your pleasure.” Then he brought his thumb to his lips and licked it.
In return, I pulled my legs up, because apparently I’d turned into a needy slut. “Stretch me. Fuck me. Fill me.”
-
The way Malcolm responded to me when I called him Daddy was addictive.
-
Malcolm’s free hand rubbed gently around my pucker. “That’s it, baby, relax. Let Daddy in.”
-
When I felt like my skin was crawling with the need to come, I reached in front of me, searching for my dick.
The voice above me drew me to a stop before I was able to make contact. “Mine.”
Holy shit. Possessive, dominant Malcolm was hot as hell and my hand fell back to the bed just as he released my right side and reached for my dick.
“You gonna come for Daddy, Ry?” Somehow, his voice came out silky smooth and sent shivers running up and down my spine.
-
My husband, my lover, my best friend, my Daddy. One man held so many titles and each one of them was special, each one unique.
-
Time stood still as I held my boy in my arms. Winning the Super Bowl was great, but I was willing to argue that holding my boy in my arms was better. “I love you, baby.”
Even through the celebrations around us, I heard Ryder sigh. “Love you too, Daddy.”

How did I ask my husband if he was a little?

A super cute novella about husbands exploring new kink together.
It’s sweet, it’s hot, and honestly the only thing wrong with it is that it’s too short.

I watched as he pushed the pacifier into his mouth, then chuckled as my six-foot-two-inch, NFL star husband nearly skipped out of my office. He had no idea how cute he was with his binkie in his mouth and blanket trailing behind him like a cape.

I needed a comforting hug, and Surprise Play worked like a charm.

“Take me to bed, Daddy.” Malcolm’s nose flared. “You don’t have to ask me twice.”

I loved so so much about this novella. Didn’t surprise me in the least as I am such a sucker for established couples. I loved how Malcom described their relationship, how they met and how they made it through hiding and long-distance as both being professional athletes in the same sport.

And I loved how Malcom reacted to finding his husband one afternoon sleeping with a pacifier - btw I loved the story about that particular pacifier as well. And the tattoos!!!! 😭❤️

I loved the tenderness in their new-found Daddy/little dynamic very much. But there were two things that didn’t work for me so well and why this wasn’t a total winner for me.

He knew it was the right thing to do but I felt a bit uncomfortable with how Malcom pushed Ry a bit into giving into the little headspace. It came naturally to him later, tho. And also I would have wished for at least one scene later in the book when Ry wasn’t a little to watch them being their usual husband-selfes with each other.

Well yeah, despite kinky books being not my super faves, I adored this couple and can def recommend this one as a sweet sweet Daddy/little story.

“I’ve thought about every possible scenario, and I can’t come up with one I wouldn’t enjoy with you.”

Sometimes people look forward to fiction stories to escape. I do too, but there are times where I look forward to any realism of life in them. That’s why I love established couple a lot. All of those new changes in life they had to face and find each other again. It’s soo heartwarming and realistic to me. And no matter how much things would change or the “trouble” split them apart, they ended up choosing each other in the end.

Age play and established couple, how do I get lucky hahah.

Ryder’s realization of the matter was true to life, he ignored it for a while and Malcom accepted him while slowly understand what was going on. This is honestly the best age play discovery I’ve ever read. Full of reassurances and mature communication. I love their journey so much, how Malcom figured out he was Daddy and Ryder was little. It didn’t look easy, but they handled it so well. It was beautiful. They fit together so well 😩🥹🥰😭

And oh, this was not much of a hockey players storyline/rep btw, so don’t waste your time if you’re looking forward to that.

I just love reading about established couples and I really liked this book. I thought this book would change my previous stance on age play but unfortunately it did not so this would be the last age play I will read in a while.

I enjoyed this book very much. This was a new experience for me for two reasons.

1) this was an established relationship.
The couple was together for 10 years and already married when they discovered that maybe they both had a kink they didn't know about and this is something i never read before. It was very interesting seeing them communicating with each other, sharing their thoughts, their fears for how their relationship will develope from this point on and the love and commitment they had for each other. Also, seeing neither of them knowing what they are doing and researching and trying things to decide what they like and what they don't in a maturely and honest way. I definetely want to read again books with enstablished couples and seeing their relationship progress and change along with themselves.

2) It was the first time i read a book with ageplay. There were some aspects of it in other books i've read, but this was the first time i read about a couple with a similar age doing outright ageplay. I wasn't sure how i would feel about it going in this book, but it was something i wanted to explore and learn more about, and i can say i enjoyed it and what to read about it again.

I understand ageplay isn't for everyone, but if someone wants a book about it, i totally recommend this.

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

My husband, my lover, my best friend, my Daddy. One man held so many titles and each one of them was special, each one unique.

I don’t tend to read standalones with an established couple, but a good friend recommended this one. It’s a really sweet novella with husbands discovering and exploring a new kink together, and it really was delightful. One MC comes home to see his husband sleeping with a pacifier, and it’s the catalyst for them exploring age play.

I enjoyed how, even though they were new to the lifestyle *officially*, when the daddy MC looks back, he can see how this whole thing didn’t actually come out of nowhere. I don’t think it would’ve worked as well as it did if it felt like it came out of the blue for both guys.

I was in the mood for a low angst novella, and this one really hit the spot. Definitely recommend if you want to read something short and well written. Oh, and if you like age play. I would say it’s pretty ‘mild’. No ABDL.

We’d worked so hard to make it to the Super Bowl, and now that it was time to get our head into that game, our record-holding wide receiver was in little space and had been for the last four hours.

I watched as he pushed the pacifier into his mouth, then chuckled as my six-foot-two-inch, NFL star husband nearly skipped out of my office.

Oh my heart...

Carly has a way of making everything seem new, even when it comes to expanding a short story into a longer novella.

I'm gonna be slightly spoiling this, though if you read the blurb you know what's going to happen.

Malcolm and Ryder have been together since college, but since both of the went into the NFL, they had to stay in the closet. Then Malcolm has a career ending accident and becomes a coach. When he was hired, he told them he was gay and was already in a relationship with the guy they just offered to join the team. So they've been out and married for a few years.

One day Malcolm finds out that Ryder sucks on a binky. This begins the Google search on Daddy Doms and littles.

Luckily, Ryder takes to it like a duck to water and they both become closer. I loved that. No angst, no doubts, just love and acceptance.

There was very little football, they did win the Super Bowl, which I guess means something and the Grizzlies were mentioned.

All in all, this was a sweet Daddy/boy story and I loved it.

Not even ABCs Scandal, 1000 ft under The White House, CIA, secret government-run agency B613, level of water-boarding and torture could get me to say my actual thoughts of this book. I am ashamed.

Uhhh this was so good!! Absolutely loved the couple and how they slowly got to realize what they missed in their relationship, the way they both got slowly into their daddy/boy dynamic was so beautifully written. I loved how understanding and carful Malcolm acted when he discovered Ryders little nature, he took such good care of him. I also have to confess, that I loved that this book only had a few sex scenes, otherwise it would have destroyed this tender and valuable feeling that this novella carried.

This story was short and sweet. I feel it was to give us a taste into the Nashville Grizzlies series with a brief introduction into the world. It was nice reading about an established couple and seeing their relationship grow while learning about the Daddy/Little world. I’m not a huge fan of it especially little aspect, I do enjoy the Daddy Kink particularly daddy dom but full on little is just not my cup of tea. However, this short story manage to keep it at a level that I could read about it and still enjoy. Overall it was a sweet read.

Loved the original version and fell more in love with this extended version.
Malcolm and Ryder are already an established couple and deeply in love. And I loved that Ms. Marie did not use cheating or unneeded drama to show that there are always new things to learn/discover about yourself and your partner. That a new direction in a relationship doesn't mean the end but a stronger bond and falling more deeply in love.
Malcolm never expected to discover his partner's sweet secret and Ryder did not expect to learn new things about himself. As they discovered more about their "new" (always has been there but not recognized for what it was) needs and desire, Malcolm and Ryder bond, trust, and love for each just got stronger. It was super cute and adorable to see Ryder discover and embrace his inner boy, and learning to trust Daddy Malcolm but always trusting his husband's, Malcolm, love and acceptance. And Daddy Malcolm never judging, encouraging, and fully accepting his new boy. The trust and love between these two just melted my heart.
Malcolm and Ryder's journey of self discovery is full of sweet and tender moments, acceptance, and so much true love. And of course, it wouldn't be a Carly book without the sweet/tender moments being perfectly balanced with humor and heat (were super hot together).

I had this but didn’t realize I’d never read it until this couple was mentioned in the last Carly Marie book. I was getting upset that a couple was just thrown in with no introduction. Oops. Guess they were. I enjoy watching a couple explore this type of relationship together. Learning about it together just makes it better for some reason.

Cute short story is cute. 😁

I'm so glad that Malcolm and Ryder's story was expanded further; I loved reading them the first time around and they were one of my all-time favourite Carly Marie couples. This version is slightly longer, has extra detail and gives them much more of the ending they deserve. I thought both men were so sweet. It was clear to see how much they love each other and their chemistry was fantastic. Getting more glimpses into how they manage their home life and work life was interesting and I just swooned at the end. I thought the epilogue was brilliant and I'm looking forward to reading any more Carly Marie books that might mention these two in passing. Overall, a fantastic daddy-boy romance with an already established couple. It had everything I could want and more.

This book was originally published in an anthology and I loved it, it was one of my favorite reads from that anthology. This version is extended and has an epilogue.
Ryder and Malcom are a married couple, one of them is a coach and the other an NFL player. One day Malcom accidentally finds out that that Ryder has been keeping a secret for years. After that they both end up discovering new things about themselves and the dynamics between them as a couple evolve.
I love reading books about married couples that talk and communicate and try new things. This was such a sweet and beautiful novella. I read it in one sitting.

Loved this. Loved that Mal was so perceptive and open for his baby boy and sooo happy to see Ryder be himself and become who he was meant to be.

This is a daddy/lb MM romance. No diapers but this is age play and if that is your thing I think you’ll love this. This is the third book I’ve read by this author and I have loved all of them!

2/5 on spice. 2/5 on kink. 1/5 on tears. Off I go to read more! So excited.

Established couple becomes closer

Zero angst
Established couple
Sports players (football)
Dual first person POV

I'll admit, age play is not for me but the idea of an established couple discovering a new lifestyle together caught my interest. I decided to try the sample and I'm glad I did. Mal's sweet and calm personality plus the way he obviously loves Ryder made me want to continue reading. I worried I'd back out of the story once the age play hit but it was surprisingly easy to accept. I mean, it's still not for me but the author's writing definitely is so I kept reading.

I really enjoyed the author's ability to move the story forward while teaching me about Daddy's and Little's without feeling like I was on the receiving end of an information dump. I also REALLY enjoyed the author's ability to tell a story about two men who are already in love. I read romance for that *falling in love* feeling and, surprisingly, this felt very loving and sweet even though Mal and Ryder were already a decade into their relationship. As they learned more about themselves and each other, I felt like I was in some secret world with them where nobody and nothing was more important than their love for one another. It was lovely and so well done.

In general, I liked the low angst level, the sweet guys, the caretaking (I like Daddy books and BDSM in general), and how nicely she wrote the intimacy, both physical and emotional. Also, when some D/s elements were brought in, the author did an excellent job of making it clear everything was consensual and communication was an actual thing these guys did, even if it was off page. I appreciate that greatly.

I actually plan on trying more from this author because her writing is wonderful and her style suits my needs in multiple ways.

Surprise Play by Carly Marie is a sweet story between two men who have known each other for years and been married for 2. Malcom and Ryder were college roommates and football players, although Malcom was 3 years older. They fell in love but had to keep it quiet because no one in the NFL was out. They both got drafted but to different teams and when Malcom was hurt and couldn’t play any more he became a coach. Being in love and having to be long distance was extremely difficult but they made it work. Then Ryder was traded to the team Malcom coached for and everything fell into place and they got married and came out. One day Malcolm came home from work and found Ryder with a binkie in his mouth taking a nap. That got him thinking about all the things Ryder did that could make him a Little. He also knew that he was very caring and could easily be a Daddy so he started doing research. The rest of the story is about the two of them exploring a Daddy/Boy relationship, even if the knowledge of it was a shock at first. I really loved this story as Daddy/Boy ones are my favorite and this one embodied it to a T. Malcom and Ryder were so sweet as they explored the different ways to be in this kind of a relationship and how it affected them and their careers in football. I enjoyed how neither one of them had even thought about it until the binkie incident and then how they acted on the knowledge to see if they liked it and could make it work. I also liked that in the end, it made their marriage much stronger. I have always been a huge fan of Ms. Marie’s stories and this one does not disappoint. If you like sweet awakening stories about Daddies and their Boys then this is one you should read.

Malcolm Ward is a retired wide receiver, NFL offensive line coach, and husband to Ryder who is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. His life is hectic and the last thing he expects is to walk into the bedroom one afternoon to find his husband sleeping with the pacifier Malcolm had jokingly given him a decade before. Ryder never intended to let his husband know that the pacifier had become one of his most cherished possessions and certainly not talk about or let him see him using it. When he wakes up after a nap he finds his Malcolm home early and finds him using it. Malcolm quickly discovers something Ryder has missed his entire life. How does he get his husband to believe that far from hating his pacifier, Malcolm is ready to be the Daddy Ryder didn’t know he needed?

This was a sweet story as Malcolm discovered that his husband was a Little, what that was and what a Daddy did for their Little. I loved the way that Malcolm threw himself into seeking knowledge and then sorting out their home so that they had the things that Ryder needed - toys, plates, a sippy cup and Liitle-friendly food. The depth of their love for each other made this something that they could both do. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content and a BDSM-like DDLB dynamic.

** Please note that Surprise Play was released as part of the 2020 Dirty Daddies Anthology. This version has been re-edited and has had approximately 12k words added throughout the book.

Story: 3.5 Stars

Coach Malcolm and player Ryder were the first out couple in pro football, and after a decade together, the spouses are still experiencing firsts in their relationship. Namely, exploring a new k¡nk for them - Ryder as a little, and Malcolm his Daddy - and their journey of discovery is a sweet, loving, and supportive one.

As much as I enjoy this trope and the author, this one just didn't quite come together for me. It's an expanded version of an anthology short story, and it could've done with some further expanding to build up Malcolm and Ryder's relationship. I couldn't shake the feeling that I should already know these MCs as this story began because it jumps into their relationship midstream.

As it was, I'd have preferred the couple's history be a part of the real-time story than being told in retrospect. I needed that backstory to care about the characters and the transformation their relationship undergoes here. This standalone would benefit from a prequel. I received an advance reading e-copy of this book and have left this honest review voluntarily. (Also read in KU.)

This is a really good story! I didn't have a chance to read this during It's initial publication as part of an anthology and so I was excited to see the short story show up as re-addited and expanded upon. It is an established couple story between a football coach and football player and they are married when one day the coach comes home and finds the his husband with a pacifier. This leads to them both doing some exploration about Daddy's/boy relationships and how age play and regression could impact and improve their lives. There's no angst it's all fluff, there's one explicit scene, a lot of it is just them as a couple exploring each play and is a really enjoyable read.

Age play with no ABDL

I also did notice that the author finally included the + after the LGBTQ acronym. This is something I reached out to her about and did not receive response via social media (but my message was seen) but I'm happy to see that whether it was my inquiry or not that she did make the change to be more inclusive.

Surprise Play is a great Daddy football romance!

Surprise Play by Carly Marie was originally published in the Dirty Daddies 2020 Anthology and has been expanded here. This is a standalone football romance that features a married couple discovering new things about themselves and each other.

Malcolm and Ryder are an interesting couple. They started off playing on the same football team together in college, becoming roommates and then more over the years. They're married in this story with Malcolm coaching and Ryder playing for the same team. I like these two as characters as they are genuine, good teammates and friends to their colleagues, and bring a lot of hope to being out in professional sports and being able to work on the same team. When Malcolm discovers new things about Ryder, I love how much thought, discussion, and research he puts in to make sure they are trying out their new dynamic with care for their long relationship.

Have read this a few times now and it's a short, feel good story. Would recommend!

This was a very sweet story. In this story you meet a guy named Malcolm Ward who is a retired wide-receiver. He is a NFL offensive line coach. He is married to a guy named Ryder who is a wide receiver in the NFL.

A while back Malcom had given Ryder a pacifier as a gag gift. Ryder never had any intention of telling his husband that his gag gift had become one of his treasured possessions. He never wanted Malcolm to see him using it. One morning he wakes up from a nap to find his husband came home early and sees him with it. He begins to realize that Malcolm is more than ready to be his Daddy.

I liked Malcolm and Ryder together. I liked how they talked about how their Daddy/Boy relationship would work. Malcolm was sensitive to Ryder’s needs and desires. This was spicy 🌶🌶🌶 but still very sweet.

Plagued with fatigue, Ryder grabs his gift of comfort from his husband, Malcom and settles in for his nap.
A gift that changes their relationship when his husband finds him using it.
With the new changes to their relationship they both find themselves to be flourishing in their new roles as Daddy and boy, both personally and professionally.

This expansion of the original story was such a joy to read. I loved seeing Malcom and Ryder connect on a deeper level and explore a whole new path in their already established relationship.
Ms Marie does Daddy/boy stories splendidly and this was a real treat to indulge in. We get cute Daddy/boy scenes, some passionate ones and a lovely ending with some surprise appearances of previous characters as well.

I read the original story in the Daddy Anthology and loved both characters. I may or may not be one of the many who bugged Carly to give us more of the two of them!

Carly is one of my top authors for age play. Her approach to kink is realistic and her characters experience true to life emotions. Although set in the world of professional sports, the story doesn't lean heavily on football to carry the story. We get to watch the two incorporate kink into their lives at home and on the road.

This is definitely a book you can enjoy whether you enjoy sports or not. The Daddy/boy relationship between Malcom and Ryder is all the things I love about age play kink.

I received an ARC of the extended story, but all thoughts and opinions are my own!

Sweet daddy kink story about Malcolm, a football coach (former player), and his husband Ryder, who has started using the pacifier given to him as a joke many years before. When Malcolm discovers Ryder sleeping with the binkie, he begins to explore the possibilities of daddy/little kink. Over time, he introduces Ryder to more opportunities to play and get in touch with his little side.

This was a very nice, easy to read, journey to discovery in the world of daddy/little play. Carly Marie does some great stories in this trope and this one I found to be a bit too mild for me to enjoy but for others it might be a nice intro to how a person gets in touch with their inner "little" side.

It's a standalone so no worries about series crossovers.

3.5* A cute story about an established couple who started dating in college and both became professional football players. Following the injury and retirement of one to coaching, they came out and are now married. Coming home one day, Mal discovers Ryder has a soother (that he gave him 10 years ago as a joke). He then starts to think about it and wonders if Ryder is a little and finally brings it up with him. The deeper they get into it, the more relaxed Ryder is, sleeping better, playing better, etc. It's basically just them as a couple exploring a new dynamic and understanding what they each get out of it. So it's cute interracial established couple romance.
