The Boy from Mexico An Immigration Story of Bravery and Determination is written by a Mexican-American author who believes that students should learn about the tough issues surrounding immigration. He writes to reflect the experiences of his students and their families, and to make sure that they see themselves and their cultural traditions in the books that they read. This colorful story is written as a picture book similar to a graphic novel. It looks like a short chapter book because it shares a multitude of colorful imagery representing the boy’s life. The Boy from Mexico An Immigration Story of Bravery and Determination tells the tale of Luz, a young teenager who dreams of leaving his barrio and traveling to the United States, a place of hope and opportunity. Although his family is worried, they let him make the long, hard journey. Luz sets off with excitement, but soon becomes exhausted, hot and worried that he made the wrong choice. He misses his family, and holds onto the skills they have taught him to survive in the desert heat. With help from a couple driving by, he makes it to the border and learns how hard it is to cross. This is a story of determination and grit and shares the challenges faced by many immigrants today.

As a children's book, this is a great one to read because it illustrates the hardships immigrants endure in order to reach their destination, and even better it is told from the perspective of a teenager. It has been my experience that most books that I have read about the immigrant experience are written from the perspective of adults or, if it is from the perspective of a child, the immigrant is most likely their parent or family member. In reality, however, it is not only adults who attempt to cross the border to the United States. It is also a true experience for many children. Despite the treacherous journey, Edward's art turns it into a teaching moment for children who may not be familiar with Mexican culture or the feelings/emotions people experience when leaving their homelands to seek better opportunities. This story of hardship is transformed into a lesson for children. Truly a great addition to any home and/or classroom.

Amazing story about one boys adventure crossing the border and how he uses his family as his determination to get through this difficult adventure. This book represents immigrants and the challenges they have to face and it also educates the reader a lot of Mexican culture and even has a glossary at the end of the book that educates the readers on common Spanish words. The plot of the book is entertaining, realistic, and overall very informative. I would incorporate this book in my kindergarten to second grade classroom as it has themes of courage, determination, tough times, family, and hope. Amazing book!

"The Boy from Mexico: An Immigrant Story of Bravery and Determination" is a book I would read to second graders. The story is about a little boy to moves from Mexico to the United States with his family. We see the little boy learn a new language, learning new customs, and learning how to overcome prejudice. The book shows themes of bravery, overcoming adversity, and perseverance. I would keep this book in my library because I think it shows students how hard it is to move from the only place you have ever known and have to learn how to live a new life.

From the captivating and stunning illustrations to the heartwarming message, “The Boy from Mexico”, is an excellent book for children and families alike! I especially appreciate and love that the view point of immigration is one from a child’s perspective; and, the reader gets immersed in culture through bilingual pages with a dictionary and follow up discussion questions at the end. This book is a much needed addition to our bookshelf!
