Home Sweet Home Romance #4

Extreme Heart Makeover

Rate this book
Is there such a thing as a meet ugly?

Let me back up a beat. At a party last month, I thought I’d met the one: Mr. Mysterious. Mr. Handsome. Mr. Grooves. We danced together, flirted, and had fun. Bess + Cassian = Forever. Then I never heard from him again.

Still single, I officially move to Butterbury. True to form, I arrive with a bang. As in crash-boom-bang. My trusty but rusty pink Cadillac slides sideways into an Escalade. That particular SUV belongs to Mr. Angry. Yes, the same mister.

To say that was the beginning of an unfortunate series of events is an understatement. I learn that my services aren’t needed at the job that brought me to town. My rental floods, and I accidentally douse the mayor with a bucket of water.

Okay, the last one wasn’t entirely innocent, but he uses his power to torment my family and friends. Who’re amazing by the way. My siblings offer to bail me out. However, I’m here to make my way and not take handouts—they’re already full of makeup brushes and hair styling tools.

Oh, and there aren’t any openings at the local salon. So what’s a resourceful gal like me to do? Take a job as a housekeeper. It comes with room and board. To my shock, it’s for Mr. Cassian Megabucks. I mean billionaire. I mean Mr. Cassian Smith.

The guy I wanted to be my Mr. Right. Then, in addition to cooking and cleaning, he asks me to be his fake missus to a wedding. It’s a magical, unforgettable night. But he does forget me. Again.

We’re opposites in every way, but maybe after I dust away these cobwebs I can makeover his heart and convince him to give love a chance.

What a fun and heartwarming story! It’s an opposites attract, small town romance. I loved the dual POV and the wonderful blend of sweet moments and fun banter.

The storyline is lighthearted but also deals with deeper emotions and themes—my favorite combination. More than anything, I just loved Bess and Cassian. They were uniquely different from each other, but were both so lovable and quirky, and really brought out the best in each other.

This is part of a series, but can be read as a standalone.

Many thanks to the author for an ARC copy. All opinions are completely my own.

These two are so fun. You’ve got Grumpy/Sunshine, opposites attract, and slow-burn going on in their story. Cassian is very reserved and intellectual vs. the bubbly, very peopley Bess. It was so fun to go back to Butterbury and the Designed to Last crew.

Things I Loved:
-Elegant
-Bess-xtra
-Meet Ugly
-“Cha Cha used to say when life gives you lemons—”
“Make lemonade?”
The corners of his eyes crinkle. “No, she said when life gives you lemons use them to add a little zest to your life.”
-Mr. Nicknames
-Fineapple
-Obstupefacta
-“But it’s like Bess paralyzes me...or neutralizes me. Makes all my angst and defenses dissolve.”
-The castle
-Sir Cole
-“You have a look on your face,” he says.
“Oh, I was just fantasizing about pushing you down the stairs. Well, not you exactly. But someone like you but without the redeeming qualities.”
-Adorkable
-Hidden Notes
-Archie & Svetllama
-“I’ll be your bae if you be my biscuit.”
-“No, you are a very complicated man, Cassian.”
I take this as a compliment.
-“But what I want is very simple. Straightforward. I want you.”

I loved that in this story we learn so much about Cassian’s grandparents, that even though they aren’t alive, they feel very much a part of the story—and I adore them, as well as his sweet parents. There’s some fun in unraveling Mayor Stoll’s continued drama and all that is happening in Butterbury. I am so ready for the final book in this series! 😍

When her sister Mae calls to offer her a job as a stylist on the home makeover show Designed to Last, Bess Fuller couldn't be more excited. Unfortunately, she arrives in the small town of Butterbury, Georgia only to find that the job has fallen through. Not only that, her new apartment has flooded and she's forced to move in with her sister and brother-in-law, who are expecting a baby. She immediately begins searching for another job and place to live, eventually landing a position as a housekeeper through a local employment agency. It's not the salon job Bess was hoping for, but at least it includes room and board.

Arriving for her first day of work, Bess is stunned to learn that her new employer is none other than Cassian Smith, the man with whom she danced the night away at a Christmas-themed wedding reception but hasn't heard from since. Recently discharged from the Navy, Cassian has reluctantly returned to his hometown because his parents are convinced that the evil town mayor plans to destroy his late grandmother's home, an honest-to-goodness castle his engineer grandfather began building for her before he died. It's kind of a mess after being unoccupied for so long, and Cassian needs a housekeeper to help him get the place in order so that he can renovate it.

Things between Cassian and Bess are awkward at first, but they gradually become friends. When he receives an unexpected wedding invitation, he impulsively asks her to accompany him as his fake wife to help him through an awkward situation. She agrees, but will pretending to be in love lead to the real thing?

I loved this book so much! Bess and Cassian were such a perfect match; he grounded her, while her sunshine helped chase his clouds away. I also enjoyed the way the author managed to keep me guessing with the twists and turns of the plot related to the shady dealings of the town mayor. It was wonderful to see the mayor get his comeuppance in the end!

I highly recommend "Extreme Heart Makeover" for all sweet contemporary and romantic comedy fans. It's the first book I've read in this series, but I plan to catch up ASAP!

Synopsis: In the continued series we get to hear Bess & Cassian’s story. While this is book number four and there are definitely benefits of reading at least the first in the Home Sweet Home Romance series, you can read this book as a stand alone but I promise you it will have you wanting to know more about the other relationships in the town of Butterbury.

In this dual perspective romance, Bess is found without a job and a place to live and Cassian finds himself in need of some assistance in cleaning up not only his grandparents estate but also his life.

Thoughts: I love that Bess and Cassian are opposites, while Bess does what she wants and wears her heart on her sleeve and Cassian lives his life doing what he thinks is best for others and hiding his feelings. I enjoyed these characters together and the other relationships they had with their friends and family. Another thing I really loved about this book is the history in the home and the mystery of the love notes left throughout the house of Cassian’s grandparents. This just extended the love story and really tied the house and the love of the family in with the love story of Bess and Cassian. I also enjoyed the quirkiness of the animals involved in the story and that they weren't dogs but rather animals you don't typically have in a romance novel. Thanks Ellie for thinking outside the box for this book. I can wait to read more about the lives of those in Butterbury.

After a series of disasters, Bess finds herself with a job or a place to live. The only one able to help her is Cassian, the one man she never thought she would see again. Cassian has inherited a large home that he needs help fixing up. He offers Bess a job as his housekeeper and somewhere to stay while she works for him.

Extreme Heart Makeover is an opposites attract, small town romance. This is book four in the Home Sweet Home Romance series. While it could be read as a stand-alone, many of the characters from the previous books make appearances throughout Extreme Heart Makeover. Some of the storyline carries over as well. I would highly recommend reading the other books first.

This dual POV romance has a great mix of sweet moments and humorous banter. The storyline is more complex than I originally expected. Bess ends up bringing out the best in Cassian, even with her quirky, clumsy ways. I appreciate the amount of background information the author includes about not only the MCs but their families as well.

I am very fond of Ellie Hall’s writing and I look forward to reading the next book in the Home Sweet Home Romance series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Every book in this series has been so much fun and I enjoy the descriptions of the house makeovers. This latest addition to the series didn't disappoint.
Each book probably could be read as a stand alone story but there is an overlap of characters and the problems with the mayor in each of the stories so it is best to read in order.

The two main characters in this story were introduced at the end of the last book. Bess is the sister of Mae and Aiden and she has quite a vibrant sunny personality. Where ever she goes, she likes to make new friends. She met Cassian at a party with the whole Designed to Last crew. After dancing with him that night, she thought they had hit it off but he never returned any of her messages. Cassian is the son of the couple that owns the diner with the famous pies and biscuits. He just retired from the military working in submarines for twenty years.

This book picks up when Bess is offered a job as a hair stylist for the Designed to Last show. She packs up and moves to Butterbury where she had spent lots of time with her grandparents. To her surprise she meets Cassian near the diner and finds out he is also moving to Butterbury to move into his grandparents house which is falling apart.

When the job falls through and her apartment floods, Bess has to try to find a job and place to live if she wants to stay in Butterbury. The only job available is for a live in housekeeper with none other than the grumpy Cassian Smith. When she shows up to the house, she discovers it is actually a castle that Cassian's grandfather built for his wife.

I love that the chapters alternate POV which gives a lot of insight into what the characters are thinking. Bess and Cassian have such opposite personalities which he really needed to help him break out of the dark clouds of his past. The title of the story really focuses on the Heart makeover that Cassian needs and just the one to do it for him, Bess.

The town is still dealing with a corrupt mayor who is trying to get another one of his schemes accomplished. There are some really humorous situations with Bess and the mayor.

Looking forward to the next story in the series.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone

– this is told from Bess & Cassian’s points of view

Review:

This is such a sweet return to Butterbury! I loved getting an update on the lives of our previous main characters and seeing them around in Bess & Cassian’s story! Bess is a riot. I loved that she would pretty much do whatever she felt like in terms of fashion choices and that it didn’t seem out of place, just uniquely Bess. I loved that Cassian loved that about her, even if he didn’t quite understand why she would do it. I also loved that Cassian was very stoic on the outside, but anytime we got into his head, it was very easy to see that he was mush whenever it came to Bess. I loved that they were so cute together, working on the house (ahem, castle) and searching for the notes all around the property. Some of my other favorite scenes/moments in this story included: dumping water, spying, the unexpected houseguest, watching the sunrise, and Aiden’s sibling teasing.

Summary:

Bess rushes to Butterbury after a string of unfortunate events…that led to more unfortunate events. See, she thought she was leaving her problems behind, but new ones were presented when she got to Butterbury. For one, Bess doesn’t have a job available like she thought and has to go searching for something different in a small town with little to no openings anywhere. Another thing is her rental is not as great as she hoped. But perhaps one of the more hurtful things is that Bess runs into (literally) Cassian, the guy who swept her off her feet at a party the month before and then never contacted her again. Hopefully she doesn’t make this a habit, or her heart could fall in more ways than one once again…

Cassian had to come back home after the mayor caused some trouble with unoccupied properties so that he wouldn’t get his grubby hands on his grandparents’ home that was left to him. But the place holds so many memories that cause him pain to remember what was lost and a past that caused a rift between himself and his parents. Cassian might not be able to fix things straight away with his family, assuming he is even ready to, but finishing his grandfather’s project of a home could make him feel more connected to his grandparents. But with how big it is, he’s going to need some help. Cassian didn’t expect to see Bess at his door for the job, but he can’t turn her or her help away. Bess gets under his skin in a way no one else has managed to and he wants to explore that feeling…as long as it doesn’t lead to heartbreak like his last relationship did…

“I’ll be your bae if you’ll be my biscuit,”

I’m nearly forty years old and I have never felt this way about a woman. I cannot keep my hands off her...or my lips.

When it comes to Cassian Smith, gimme all the heat and humidity!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love being on ARC teams, I really love it when that author has series and I can continue to read along as new books come out! That’s the case with Ellie’s DIY in Love series! I’ve been on of these books ARC teams and love each one!

This one was fun-er! (I know that’s not a word, but all of them have been fun). The male MC, Cassian, did NOT want to return back home; and his momma is the sweetest little side character star with the pies that every dies for! But when this submariner finally finds his land legs, will his heart still be at sea or will it find a home too? 💙❤️🧡

Then we have Bess-xtra (and funny story, I acully said “I know, I’m doing it because I’m so Bess-xtra” and no one around me knew what I meant! Lol oops forgot y’all don’t read the amazing stuff I do!)

Bess is so over the top! From her purple, or what it pink?, streaks in her hair to her polka dots and sneakers, Bess is the “air-head like” but actually really smart because she researched and has done all sorts of crazy things (like work on an exotic farm in Australia) in her almost 40 years of life.

Oh yeah, that’s the other thing, I love how these two are middle-aged characters, both are almost 40, but they don’t always act like it. Maybe it’s because I’m mid-thirties, but I love the idea that love can still hit ya when you’re older!

So, if you love:
🪜home makeovers
🪜grumpy/sunshine
🪜ostriches and llamas
🪜pie
🪜a treasure hunt
🪜fake relationships
🪜small town
🪜castles
🪜conspiracy

Then this book is your next read! It can be read as a stand-alone too, but works best in the DIY family.

Also, thank you Ellie for taking up the #ostrichchallenge I kinda instituted last summer. It was such fun to realize in the acknowledgment mage my contribution to creating Archie! 🧡🪶#noostrichemoji

📖 ARC REVIEW 📖

Thank you @elliehallauthor for an early copy of Extreme Heart Makeover. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. 🤍

Extreme Heart Makeover is a small town, opposites attract romance novel that tells the story of Bess and Cassian returning to their hometown, each with their own agenda. They are brought together by opportunity – rebuilding/renovating Cassian’s “castle” he inherited from his grandparents and putting a stop to the town’s mayor’s infrastructure planning.

I read this novel without any background on the previous books, and I can say that this is such a light-hearted read! This can be read as a standalone and my gosh the characters were so charming and sweet, especially Bess, who’s a total ray of sunshine and radiates positivity. Her banter with Cassian, who’s somewhat the opposite of Bess, was adorable and I felt like I needed more of it – they just make me so kilig! Bess helped Cassian come out of his shell and is a fun influence on him.

Initially, what kept my interest was Cassian’s reluctance to return home. There’s a complete mystery to it that made me think all the while – “What happened to him or between him and his family that kept him from coming home for two decades?” I loved how the mystery was uncovered and we got some tidbits of Cassian’s grandparents’ love story even though they weren’t present in the story.

Rating Extreme Heart Makeover ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5. Releases January 15th, 2023!

Romance level: kissing🔥

“Mae says I’m impulsive. I say I’m spontaneous. For example, right now, my hair is brown w/pink streaks. At Christmas, it was blonde w/ red & green streaks.”
“Pink is my favorite color.”

I love how grumpy Cassian is. Bess was a bundle of joy & so chaotic, in the best way. They complemented each other so well.

Cassian was a sweetheart w/ THE ENCOUNTER. But Aiden? My heart was so happy w/ the brotherly love🥺.

Fineapple😂

Cassian was a bit grumpy....okay, a lot & closed off, quiet, & more grunts than person...but the burdens he was carrying were heartbreaking to see.

They were really cute. I love the scavenger hunt! It was so sweet😍. I love the friendships and support in these people.

I'm always happy to read God's word moving in the stories & characters. It is not the main topic of the story, but to me, it feels like a gentle reminder that He is always there, in everything we do.

The final bits were really sweet. I was shocked at first with the pace, but then it cleared out. I liked how he got his act together. He made peace with his past & went to get his girl. I love that they talked about it. She was so open & forgiving. I can't wait for what's coming next!

⚠️TW: loss of a loved one.

He had a pocket protector in kindergarten. She has pink hair and wears polka dots with stripes.
A wonderful read about two very different people both searching for a place they can be understood and belong. On the surface Cassian and Bess have nothing in common. He likes to process all the facts before making any choice. He is brilliant but likes to consider all the options preferably in a quiet location with no one around. Bess jumps right in. She makes friends wherever she goes and is always watching for someone who she can help. They are opposites in so many ways but neither of them feel like they have been accepted as they are. Both feel the need to be seen and valued just as they are. When circumstances force the quiet, reflective Cassian and the outgoing, over the top Bess, who’s goal is to make him smile, together who knows where it will lead. Mix in a couple of dirty politicians, a status seeking ex-fiance and a double-crossing best friend and you have a fun but also reflective story dealing with the value of people regardless of their differences. A very good read you will enjoy. I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

The unique courtship rituals of Svetllama and Archie.

Along with all the giggles, snorts and guffaws that seem to follow Bess’ misadventures there’s a woman who loves bigly and just wants someone to love her back. Cassian is carrying such a load of guilt around like a backpack of rocks and has totally walled off his heart, that he’s not quite sure what to do when he comes in contact with Bess’ effervescence and especially how she makes him feel. Besides all the tingly happy feelings there’s a giant dose of scared spitless and his go-to response is to run away as far as possible even to the bottom of the sea. He’s a genius and can fix anything but people and conversations takes a little more time to process. Then there’s the minor issue of the slimy mayor and his schemes and hijinks to change the perfectly nice little town into a giant money making venture for him and his cronies-who Cassian has known and dealt with before. Such a fun read, and something you won’t find anywhere else, the courtship ritual of an ostrich and a llama. Clean read.

So far I’ve really enjoyed this entire series. Cassian and Bess are the perfect opposites attract couple. It’s a super easy read and I think enjoyable for most ages(clean, closed door rom-com). I wouldn’t say you absolutely have to read the first few, but it definitely helps create the entire picture of Butterbury. My biggest issue with this series is all the characters are mid 30’s to 40’s. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but they hide their emotions like teenagers. You would think with age they would just say what they want instead of beat around the bush, causing problems. I get it for the sake of the book, but it got a little old with each couple doing the same thing.

Overall, still a great read. The supporting characters are all great, except the mayor haha and this will make you want to eat pie and biscuits!

When Bess finds herself without a home or a job, she agrees to move in with Cassian to work as his housekeeper while he fixes up the estate he was given by his grandparents. Cassian and Bess couldn’t be more different if they tried. While Bess is all sunshine and good intentions, Cassian on the other hand is grumpy, introverted, and reserved.

Nonetheless, the pair find themselves continually thrown together in spite of themselves. I loved getting to know Cassian and Bess and I’m glad they were able to overcome their differences and get their HEA. I also loved getting to reconnect with the couples from the previous books in the series.

Bess and Cassian have meet cute and not so cute encounters. She is a bit of a free spirit figure it out as she goes along with one disaster after another makes friends everywhere kind of girl. While he is former military, a more precise and cautious kind of guy. They don’t have much in common except working together on his grandmother’s house. The slimy mayor makes another appearance and his connections are much deeper and more sinister than the town. I don’t know how he isn’t in jail yet. It was great to catch up with the characters from the previous books and meet new ones including the rogue ostrich.

Opposites attract - grumpy & sunshine - pineapple - Surprise - familiar love.
I loved the sunshine of Bess and the grump of Cassian! A perfect opposites attract book. I loved watching as grumpy as Cassian thought he could be, that Bess' 'extra-ness' just drew him in, that he'd break out a smile. He was such a swoony MMC, wanted to make Bess his Queen and anything to make her happy. I loved the secret family love notes left all around the castle\house, the meet ugly meet cute, ostrich and llama, and the pretend marriage detailing conversation.
Such a cute book!

This is such a great series of friendship and support! This book focuses on Bess, who is the best ray of sunshine, and Cassian, who is a very serious person. I love how Bess just accepts and loves Cassian for who he is and wants to be there to support him. Cassian has a lot of doubts that he has to work through before he can accept his love for her. I love seeing them work together and their sweet happily ever after🧡. Also find out more about Bess & the Lady Bosses continual mission to save Butterbury from the crooked Mayor Stoll!

Cassian and Bess

Such a great job of writing the character of Cassian! I could really feel him, his anxiousness, and his desire to be more for Bess. He was hard to get to know being so closed off, even when written from his point of view. But I loved how he slowly opened up a bit with Bess. I fell in love with Bess and her loving acceptance and forgiveness. I cannot believe that Mayor Gatlin Stoll is still in office. Extreme Heart Makeover is another fabulous book by Ellie Hall.
I’m enamored of Archie and Svetllama.

Okay! Extreme Heart Makeover by Ellie Hall is so fun!!! Full disclosure… I’m a little more uptight like Mr. Hunka- hunka- burnin love, Cassian… but wish I was more like Bess!! I was laughing out loud!! The inner- dialog is witty, yet spot on! The author knows how to suck you into a story and make you so invested in the characters! This one is a must read!! If you haven’t started the series- now is the time to binge them all ❤️

A touching, funny and unique story!
The characters are very well written. I love that the MMC is a navy man and how he experiment the makeover of his heart. And I also love Bess and her personality. She really brings life and light to Cassian. The "house" the crew renovate is so well described and its a really unique place! There are cameos from previous books, but one of my favorites has been pregnant Mae. Cant wait to read the next in the series. Reading the epilogue introducing a new character has made me really curious!

This series is so fun with a lot of humor and heart in each story. So many interesting moments in this one to read about especially with what is really going on with the town. No spoilers here just don't forget to read the epilogue at the end because it is really attention getting. The way the author writes this story is just great. Reading with the rest of the series is best but could enjoy this one on its own too.

This is a sweet and fun opposites attract tale of Bess and Cassian. Bess is easy going with a big heart. Cassian is by the books and has high walls around his heart. Bess and Cassian get closer as they work together. This is great story with a hint of suspense, some laughs and moments that warm your heart.

I Could Totally Relate

I had to laugh when the main love interest was a nuclear engineer submariner like my son. My husband was a submariner who actually made patrols out of Georgia. Cassian had many qualities typical of those in that line of work. Bess, as his opposite, was exactly who he needed. The Ladybosses and their dynamics were once again involved. I laughed out loud at ostrich/Llama antics. The whole story was so good, as was the ending.

Sweet love story

The book started out like a whispered melody captivating and mysterious. Characters shifted from shadows into glorious light rivaling the sunrise. I fell under the author's spell and fell in love with Bess and Cassian.
This book is infused with love, surprises, and greed. I have never read anything like it before, and certainly it was far different than any of the other books in the series! It was amazing!

I did not want this book to end. I loved loved loved the chemistry between Bess and Cassian. This story hooked me from the very beginning. I read it in a day. Couldn't put it down. Small town romances are the best and I love opposites attract. I highly recommend this series! I can't wait for Aiden's story to come out soon.

Really enjoyed being back in Butterby and hearing more of the corrupt mayor's plans. Loved the relationship between Cassian and Bess, two complete opposite personalities, who definitely belong together. Fun moments with an ostrich and llama, love notes and a few incidents with the mayor. Very enjoyable

Extreme Heart Makeover

A cute romantic comedy with Bess, a Jill of all trades, and Caspian, a retired nuclear submarine engineer. Both have good backstories and are total opposites.
What disaster will the town face in this time? Will these two opposites be able to break down the obstacles to find love?
