The author traces the thread of Western ideas starting with hunter gatherers up to about the Renaissance period. Himself clearly a secular thinker, he analyzes the greatest minds and trends in our history and determines that the marriage between Judea-Christian values and Greek philosophy is the driving force that has propelled Western culture to where it is today. Fascinating read.

"Gods and Men: The Origins of Western Culture" Parks 1959. The more contemporary academics down play the importance of ancient European culture the more inept they appear. It's nice to read something from 1959.

Wow...a wonderfully clear and detailed history of the culture we all take for granted.
