With this essential cocktail recipe book, you’ll be shaking and stirring up the classics from negronis and Manhattans to mint juleps and French 75s—and impressing your guests—in no time.
Any reader of fiction (and particularly mysteries, thrillers, and 20th century historical fiction) has encountered “the cocktail.” This alcoholic beverage is a feature of bars, speakeasys, and how the “well-to-do” crafted their get-togethers. Having helped one of my offspring get a “certification in mixology,” I have retained an interest in this subject matter even though I don’t believe there has been a year in the 21st century where I have consumed five.
I guess I am fascinated with what inspires a concoction and how it appeals to the senses. There are so many books on this subject that it is hard to write one that stands out. Faith Hingey has done so by responding to those criteria stated above. She does the following, does them well. 1. Provides as uncomplicated an approach as is possible. 2. Includes a very tempting photograph of each cocktail. 3. Gives some consideration to alternatives and “riffs” on the theme. 4. Provides some historical context.
For the latter, here is an example: "Modern Twist: The famous Cosmopolitan is a riff on the Kamikaze, with the simple addition of a splash (1 ounce) of cranberry juice. Unsweetened cranberry juice has the purest flavor, but since it’s quite tart, add a bit more simple syrup and reduce some of the lime juice to compensate."
I will include another recipe, just to give you some sense of her approach which includes: the number the recipe will serve; the kind of glass it will look best in (also in the photograph); some relationship to or related cocktails; a bit of historical context; and, of course, clear preparation directions. Lemon Drop: Serves 1 • Coupe Although sometimes served in shot form, the classic Lemon Drop is effectively a vodka variation of the brandy-based Sidecar (this page). Invented in the 1970s in San Francisco, this drink was designed to attract female clientele to a singles bar. Simple in taste, this refreshing drink is clean and easy to enjoy. Tools Small bowl; Coupe glass; Shaker; Jigger; Strainer Ingredients Sugar, to rim the glass ¾ ounce fresh lemon juice, plus more for the rim 1½ ounces vodka ½ ounce orange liqueur ½ ounce simple syrup (link to page if a ebook) Preparation 1. Pour some sugar into a small bowl. Wet the edge of a coupe glass with water or lemon juice. Dip the glass rim into the sugar bowl, then set aside. 2. In a shaker, combine the vodka, lemon juice, orange liqueur, and simple syrup, then fill the shaker with ice. Seal and shake for 20 seconds. 3. Strain into the prepared coupe glass. Hint: Sugar and salt rims are common in sour-style drinks, which means you should already have a piece of cut citrus handy. For convenience (and flavor!), just use the citrus juice to wet your glass for the rim." Full marks!
Classic Cocktails Done Well Tried-and-True Recipes for the Home Bartender Author: Faith Hingey
eARC & Cookbook Review Release Date: October 18, 2022
My Rating: 4/5 ⭐️
In Faith Hingey’s book, Classic Cocktails Done Well, readers and users can work to perfect their “home-bartending game” and learn to mix 75 classic cocktails.
Broken into an introduction, gin, whiskey, brandy, rum, and et cetera section, this book goes over making classic cocktails at home with easy to follow steps. The introduction and first chapter gives users the perfect chance to learn more about the background of cocktails, as well as mixing tips and tricks, basic tools and ingredients to have on hand, and anything else you might need when making an at-home beverage.
The recipes themselves are well written and can easily be followed. Hingey also includes bullets like “Modern Twist” to different recipes, giving users the chance to amplify their cocktails.
While there are not images of every drink, the ones included are well staged and good quality.
Personally, my favorite section is the “Cocktails by Occasion.” It offers suggestions for different events like brunch, date night, a daytime barbecue, and more. I think this is a great way to suggest appropriate cocktails for different events!
All in all, this is a great book, very user-friendly, and perfect for anyone just getting into making cocktails. This will be the perfect addition to any bar cart or kitchen.
Thank you NetGalley, Zeitgeist, and Faith Hingey for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

I loved in this book the gorgeous pictures, the yummy recipes, and all of the facts and reference materials describing the different drinks. This is a great addition to a recipe collection, and a must have for a home bar. I will be adding this hardback to my Christmas Wishlist for sure!
Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Classic cocktails written in an easy to understand format. The photos were a nice touch, and the descriptions helpful. This was a great beginners book and fun anecdotes to boot.
Awesome read! I've always been curious about cocktail making, so this was a no brainer for me to read. First of all, the photography in this book is so beautiful! And I really appreciate that there is a photo for every recipe, as the presentation is important, especially for beginners. Other than that, the book is very well written and contains every piece of information one might need to begin their journey in cocktail making, including different techniques and equipment. There are a ton of recipes in the book so there is definitely something for everyone, and I also really appreciate the categorization of recipes by occasion and inclusion of volume equivalents at the end of the book. All in all I think that it's a very useful book that would make a great gift for anyone interested in cocktails. I would definitely recommend it! Thanks to NetGalley and Zeitgeist for providing me with a copy.
Classic Cocktails Done Well Author: Faith Hingey ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great book for those looking to make delicious cocktails at home! The book breaks down the basic tools, glassware, and spirits to build a good home bar. The cocktails are great and accompanied by beautiful photos as well as hints or variations for the drinks. If you are someone who already has a good knowledge of cocktails and has other cocktails books, I don't think this fills any gaps in what you would have/know how to make. However, it would be great for beginners who want to expand their repertoire and would also make a great gift!
Thanks to NetGalley, Zeitgeist Publishing, and Faith Hingey for an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts in this review are my own.
Classic Cocktails Done Well is a nicely curated easy to understand bar book by Faith Hingey. Due out 18th Oct 2022 from Penguin Random House on their Zeitgeist imprint, it's 192 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats.
This is a well organized and accessible bar book. All the recipes are photographed and serving suggestions are attractive and appropriate. The recipes are arranged by main liquor ingredient: gin, whiskey, brandy, rum, and other liquors; individual cocktails are arranged alphabetically in each chapter. Each recipe includes an introductory description and yields, ingredients in imperial standard (oz) measurements, and step by step instructions. Barware and tools are also listed. Variations and alternatives are provided at the end of the recipes. The book also includes a useful links list and resources for further reading as well as a cross referenced index.
Many of the ingredients should be available at any well stocked grocery/liquor store although some might need to be sourced at specialists. Cocktails are such a civilized interlude and this book includes a solid cross section of classics to build mixology skills and impress one's friends at the next gathering.
Five stars. A good resource for the home mixologist.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Recipe books are always hard to rate and review for me. Since it’s mainly recipes (that I’ll be honest, I haven’t tried) it’s not like I can share too many overall opinions but I can say this - I enjoyed flipping through it!
Thanks to NetGalley I got to read an ebook l copy of this and it was quite interesting. The introduction gave us the necessary insight into the author and the motivations behind the creation of this book. Each chapter starts with information on how to do something in a way that will create the perfect (or at least very well done) cocktail. There are even lists of recommended spirits, garnishes and other kitchen staples to have on hand when creating a home bar. The pictures are also helpful if you aren’t sure what all of the things he’s talking about are. We also get into the importance of using the proper glass.
Each chapter is something different and when the recipes come around they don’t just include ingredients, but there is a picture, a breakdown of everything from the glass to the garnish, step by step instructions, necessary tools and a background on the drink. I found that very interesting! There’s even a section for resources and I love that!
If you’re interested in making classic cocktails and doing it well and properly I’d definitely pick this up.
Who loves a cocktail? ME! Who wants to make delicious cocktails at home so pj's are appropriate cocktail attire? Also ME! I love getting dressed up and going out to drink new-to-me cocktails. But I absolutely love staying in and enjoying a cocktail. And my repertoire has been more or less limited to Dirty Martinis, Moscow Mules, and Old Fashioneds. But now I am excited and inspired to try making more adventurous classic cocktails at home. Since moving this summer, I now have an amazing built-in to house cookbooks, stemware, and bar items. It's possibly my favorite corner of the house 😍 so I must put it to use! Thank you to NetGalley and Zeitgeist Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion - this book will be my go-to as the weather gets colder and I will be staying inside more (hello, New England winter coming all too soon). I can imagine that a physical copy of this would be an excellent gift for anyone who likes to experiment and wants to make more cocktails at home. Even the introduction was super informative and accessible, explaining basic needs for a well stocked home bar and the reasoning behind the different glassware used for various drinks. I'm excited to follow the author on Instagram for even more cocktail guidance
Cocktails anyone? After reading this book, I feel as I could make the drinks in this book. There are cocktails that I have not heard of . I enjoyed learning about the bit of history she gives with each drink. It makes for interesting conversations while drinking that cocktail. The information about setting up a small bar for drinks is so very helpful as I never knew all the things she suggested. She arranges the cocktails by the main liqour used. She also suggest which cocktail for different occasions. She does include a brief bibliography. There is a chart on volume equivalents. I found it very helpful to have an index so if you know the name of a cocktail, you can find the recipe for it. The pictures of the cocktails with their recipes was an excellent idea. I am definitely happy to say that the cocktails I made are delicious and not hard to make. I found this book to be delightful and delicious. I also have much more respect for bartenders making drinks as I never really thought about all the different cocktails there are to make.
Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.
Thank you to both #NetGalley and Zeitgeist for providing me an advance copy of Faith Hingey’s cocktail recipe book, Classic Cocktails Done Well, in exchange for an honest review.
#ClassicCocktailsDoneWell is an apt title for a book explicitly written for the at-home bartender. Gorgeous photos of timeless cocktails gloss the pages, or in the words of the author,
Classic cocktails provide a window into the past. Consider the underground bar, the hidden bar behind a rotating bookshelf, or the windowless bar decked out in nautical adornments. These charming places provide a glimpse of life in another era, where drinking a storied libation is really a form of time travel.
Such an evocative quote! 🤩 The chapters are divided by types of liquor. Unfortunately, there is no chapter dedicated to vodka, so I had to deduct one star. Other than that, super interesting and informative #cocktail work!
This was actually a surprisingly in depth book about cocktails. It's broken down into several chapters (The Classics at home, Gin, Whiskey, Brandy, Rum, Other Spirits & Liqueurs) Along with a ton of other information about classic cocktails, setting up a home bar, bartending tools, etc. The recipes themselves are well laid out and easy to follow. Plus there are "hints" and "modern twists" sprinkle generously throughout.
The only minor issue I had was that it isn't the most visually pleasing of books. Yes, there is a photo for every recipe, however, they are not very eye catching or interesting. Just a single photo of the drink on a plain white background. I think it would have been more visually pleasing if the photo had at least been the entire page. 🤷🏻♀️
I am on a streak of reading books on cocktails, and this one ranks among the best of them. The chapters of the book are arranged by spirit with chapters featuring gin, brandy and whiskey among others. Within each chapter there are a balanced assortment of recipes for cocktails that can easily be made at home, along with clear photos of each cocktail. The book is complete with an introduction on tools, techniques and glassware.
I will highly recommend this to readers who are looking for an introduction to making cocktails!
Thank you to the publisher, Zeitgeist and NetGalley for the e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
I have ALWAYS loved old, classic cocktails and this book is my “Spirit” animal. I love the background and overview given before launching into the 75 classic recipes.
My friends and I go to a local Supper Club that specializes in classic drinks…this book almost reads like their bartenders guide. I’m loving it and will be working through these recipes with my friends as we entertain over the next year. I’m even thinking this may be the best Christmas gift for all them as well. Its right up our alley! Can’t recommend this book more if you’re into classics as well.
If you want to learn how to make the perfect Hemingway Daiquiri but have no idea where to start, this book is for you. Newbies like me can learn their way around the hardware and the liquor cabinet and even get some trivia on every concoction that will make for decent conversation filler if you ever need it. Make sure not to skip the introduction, as it contains the core skills you’ll need for the rest of the recipes. Every recipe also comes with a picture: no need to memorize the name of drinks while you're out... Do it like me, and look them up visually! Cheers!
Nice book with 75 classic recipes of different alcoholic cocktails. Went through the pages fast, checking what I might want to try out for myself.
Don’t have all the necessary things at home but as an inspiration to try out something new - I liked the book. I don’t drink in general but maybe when I’m in the right mood - I might try something from this book :)
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing eARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
Good book on making basic cocktails. As the author notes these are very “Booze Forward.” I appreciate the author give some history of each drink, and that the ingredients are limited and fairly common. I made the lemon drop and it was delicious. Great reference for any bar. Would make a great gift for a housewarming or bridal shower. Recommend
I'm not big on alcohol so I showed mom this book and she thought some were instering and gave her ideas. Which is helpful because my mom works in a bar. Some of the recipes could be easily changed to how the person wants. Which is good .
I enjoyed Classic Cocktails Done Well by Faith Hingey immensely. Recipes are simple and organized by dominant spirit. This is a book you can return to again and again, whenever you fancy a cocktail.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I learned a lot about classic cocktails and now I could even try to mix some of them. Informative and easy to follow recipes. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This is a good tool especially if someone likes to entertain at home. These are easy to follow instructions and there is a variety of recipes to choose from.
Cocktails are everywhere. This is a great host/hostess gift. The classics are always the favorites and anyone new to creating their own cocktails will love this book.
Thanks for the free/gifted book. @zeitgeistpublishing
75 classic cocktails done well. That’s it! That’s the review!
Faith Hingey organizes what could be just another cocktail recipe book into something useful and down-to-earth that every novice home bartender should include in their resources. With pictures and easy to understand recipes, broken down by main ingredient and the classics, made me want to expand my bartending skills.
The only thing I would add as a drawback is that I read this on a Kindle and you definitely lose the aesthetics of this book and the pictures in that. I would absolutely recommend picking this up in “real life”.
Thank you to NetGalley, Zeitgeist, and Faith Hingey for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked Faith Hingey's new cocktail recipe book. In today's ultra creative, smoked, syruped and bubbled mixology world Hingey brings back some a simpler time breathing new life into dated classic cocktails. Each recipe includes a well taken photo of the drink, an introduction/history, list of tools and ingredients, and easy to follow instructions. At the end of the recipe she includes a tip or modern twist to update the drink. I have to admit many of the recipes I had forgotten about or never heard of but they sound good and I cant wait to try. I really like the simple beauty of this book and think it is a great addition for the home bartender.
UPDATED: I received a copy Classic Cocktails Done Well card set and it is gorgeous. The card stock is excellent quality with beautiful pictures and easy to follow recipes. The cards are color coded by spirit along with a standard handbook with glassware, tips and basic recipes for things like simple syrup. These would make a great stocking stuffer!!
I loved this book of classic and new cocktails. The book described the different tools a good bar set-up requires. It explained the different glasses and liquors. The recipes were for classic cocktails and offered ways to make them slightly different. The lists of ingredients were manageable. I enjoyed reading the different recipes and will definitely use the recipes.
Beautifully photographed cocktails with simple, easy to follow recipes and thorough, simple descriptions of techniques. A great starting guide for simple classic cocktails
