Mercer Mayer is an American children's author and illustrator. He has published over 300 books, using a wide range of illustrative styles. Mayer is best known for his Little Critter and Little Monster series of books.
Growing up, I really loved Mercer Mayer. Now that I am a human development major, I am finding myself really disappointed with many of my childhood books (mostly because of the messages they send to young children)! But I do have to say, Mercer Mayer holds up pretty well still. I particularly liked this book because it discusses the importance of not only keeping track of what you spend and how you save it but the value of work in order to make that money. I think this is an important lesson for young children who want to spend money like it grows on trees rather than thinking about what that money means. I also think it encourages young children to make smart financial choices!
It's interesting to see how you can find frog and spider on every page instead of mouse in the later editions. A good Little Critter book that goes well with a child getting their first piggy bank, but a discussion from parents might be in order. I liked how the book shows the reward chart/system.
This book was very well done, explaining the economics of being a kid , with a great example for the parents to use, I love that there is a frog and spider on most every page for my son to search for keeping him just enough occupied for me to finish the page and then start again on the next page. This was a Good Read
"Just a Piggy Bank" by Mercer Mayer is a great start to teaching financial literacy to young children. If I had to place it in a genre for our class I'd call it realistic fiction, despite the main character being a little critter.
This is a cute book for everyone to read and a good lesson of saving money that all students need to understand the concept of money. I would use this book in the future.
I'm getting a little pickier on my ratings. This was a good book: 3 stars. I like the spider and frog on every page as it adds something interesting for a little one to look for. The book also has a couple of good lessons like putting things where they go, and working to earn money or buy things.
