Games Of The Underworld #1

Marked for Execution

Rate this book
Haunted by the fragments of my mind, I found sanctuary in a world without hope or mercy.
Survival was all we could focus on, and it drove us to extremes in the name of saving humanity.
Worse, beneath the panic and fear, something else stirred.
Something I couldn't run from began changing me in ways I couldn't explain or understand.
The lost piece refused to find its way back to me.

After an ambush ripped away the comfort of lies, I realized that the only way through this nightmare is forward.
Nothing I do or say will ever turn back the clock, and I've had to make my peace with that.
I've become an enemy, marked for execution.
Life, or at least what's left of mine, just got a little more interesting.

GAMES OF THE UNDERWORLD
The shadows of the underworld call your name.
The rise and fall of empires, the vengeance of leaders
Lost in a game of life and death, mercy becomes obsolete
Survivors are left to destruction in search of hope in desolation.

MARKED FOR EXECUTION is one of fifteen books within the Games of the Underworld shared universe. It is a standalone novel which can be read independently, but to get the full story, it is highly recommended to read all of the books within the series.

I'm a reader, first and foremost. Just like everyone else.

I love books that are just out there. From fluffy to pitch-black darkness. Monsters and aliens to the men who haunt your dreams painting the walls in red.

My love for reading and writing reviews has led me down the road of becoming a writer myself, thanks to the encouragement of others!

I'm not sure where this journey will lead me, but I hope I can breathe life into words the way so many others have done for me when I needed an escape.

PROLOGUE

“Have her executed by the end of tomorrow.” Her commanding voice was devoid of emotion. It sounded as if she asked him to make sure dinner was done by the next hour—if they were creatures that ate the normal way.

Clan Corrus had always been one my father told me to be wary of.

I missed my father. The smell of his blood still lingered in my nostrils…or was it my own?

I wanted it to be over. I was tired of it all. I should have never crossed the path to the East. The human encampment with burning bodies on crucifixes drove me into a fight or flight response. My eyes never witnessed anything as horrendous as the bodies of vampires that shrieked in their sorrow and pain while flames consumed their very being. Their suffering burrowed itself under my pores until it became a part of me—as if I were one of them, charred for the pleasures of men and their ‘retribution’.

Hung on this wall by the shackles at my wrist, I pondered the stupid probabilities of my past decisions. Running seemed easier at the time, but now, I wondered which would have been the better choice, if death was imminent no matter the chosen path.

The smell of burnt skin buried itself into my memory like a horrible aftertaste that refused to be washed away.

The voice of one of my tormentors broke me from the memories. The images of skin peeling off bone faded into the background, now replaced by his wicked smile.

“Darius, don’t play too much. The queen wishes for an audience in her final hours, if you please.” As if it was a request and not a requirement, her voice lingered in the air like the devil’s advocate. “Remember that she will be used for Queen Cassie’s peace treaty with Clan Disaris.”
“Yes, of course, Mistress Tiara.”

Tiara. The vampire with short white hair, eyes as blue as ice, and pale skin gave me one last glance before she exited the torture chambers without another word. Her air of superiority told me she was one of the few close to the Queen’s side.

Purebreds were all alike, I quickly came to find. The chosen among the elite in a world that was beneath them, and they wished to eliminate the unworthy.

Purity, indeed. More like a holocaust among a pathetic excuse for existence, a world already brought to its knees. Was there no mercy to ever be found again in this wretched place? Life should have been obsolete for all of us.

Clan Corrus was everything I heard it to be, down to the gritty fact that they were barbaric in their agenda to find peace. It was just my bad luck that I ran across the wrong group on my run to ask for water…

Peace was for fools who still believed it existed. Hope was an infection that didn’t discriminate.
My torture master sliced my ribs once more to bring my attention back to him. My skin itched from trying to heal itself. His wicked smile made my gut churn with bile that threatened to spew in his face.

Perhaps I should let it.

I watched as he licked his lips in anticipation of the ‘fun’ he’d be privy to before the night ended - the night before my final execution.

It was always going to come down to this, wasn’t it?

“Pretty little thing, aren’t ya? What were you doing out on the streets, hmm? Were you playing bait for Clan Disaris?”

His mouth hovered around my neck and naked breast, his eyes that of a devil who waited to devour the soul brought forth before him. Little did he know that Clan Disaris knew nothing about my existence, so their offer of a peace treaty would be for nothing. I made sure to keep that little tidbit to myself.

With a harsh inhale, he pulled back and gathered himself. “Your lack of enthusiasm bores me, hybrid. Good riddance. We do not need abominations like yourself running around, anyhow. At least you will prove your purpose in a larger plan now.” His fingers brushed my skin with a false sense of reverie. He teased my sense of touch until I wanted to claw my own skin off to rid myself of his breathing before me.

Unable to help myself, I spat blood in his face, smiling with crimson-coated teeth. If I am to die this day, let it be known to the world that I died with my pride still intact.

The image of my father’s eyes haunted me. He would have blamed me for this, told me I should have prepared for the possibility. A different kind of hate lurched in my gut. If hiding me wasn’t enough, his disapproval for my own downfall would have killed me anyway.

I lifted my head with a smirk, watching my undertaker wipe his face off with the back of his hand. He smiled back and undid his buckle, and I lifted a brow in challenge. It didn’t matter anymore. Nothing did.

He brought down his metal belt in rapid successions on my front, drawing a hiss through gritted teeth.

I felt my skin filleted off the bone by the time Mistress Tiara came back with the intention of escorting me into the court before the Queen. Grabbing my arms, she broke my wrists with a crack to slip them out of the shackles. I stifled my moan, lips pressed tightly together. My body was tossed onto the floor and kicked one last time for good measure.

Clan Corrus can burn in the depths of hell.

Groaning, I buried my face and hands away from her lest they see how quickly I heal. I’ve never compared it to a normal vampire, but today was not the day. No, I’d rather take all my secrets to the grave.

Father would at least be proud of that…if he knew what I was capable of.

My legs dragged behind me over concrete and carpeted flooring as the one called Tiara continued to pull me.

Oof. The wind was knocked out of me when she threw me a few feet in front of her. My arms automatically extended to cushion the fall and I instantly knew my mistake. Hopefully no one else noticed.

A boot landed on my back the same moment I tried to push myself up. Darius stomped on me again and my face slammed on the ground, rattling my brain.

“So, this is she?” said another woman with a bored tone.

My anger rose with every breath. I should cool it. I shouldn’t lose my temper, but these vampires were testing me.

“Not much of a hybrid, is she?”

Tiara’s statement was the last straw. The adrenaline in my body morphed into something that overtook my senses. It’s only happened a few times. The moment my father found out was the moment everyone else did.

The smell of their blood still lingered in my nose to this day.

Twisting quickly, I grabbed Darius’ ankle and broke it with a loud crunch. He howled in pain and the smile grew wider on my face. The others in the room pulled him back when he lunged at me, screaming profanities. I looked over my shoulder and blew him a bloody kiss.

Queen Cassie stood from her throne and stepped forward, looking down at me with disgust. As I stared right back at her with one knee on the ground, the feeling was mutual.

“Deliver her at nightfall. Make sure you drop her right at their doorstep, and they see your face, so they know who calls for them. Tiara, you will accompany Darius to make sure the proposition of the peace treaty is articulated correctly and effectively.”

“Yes, my Queen.”

She bent down, grabbed my chin, and forced my face toward her. Her eyes bored into mine with such internal hatred that I could not help but reciprocate the same energy. My body was buzzing with the need for bloodshed, but my mind knew I was outnumbered amidst this horde.

Suddenly, the room dropped in temperature. Cassie’s hand shot out and her claws pierced my throat, lifting me up.

“Fool. You are nothing to me! Clan Shaye will be destroyed by my hand.” Her grip tightened, and my eyes rolled back. “They think to offer me a truce?”

Another set of nails dug into my neck, and it felt like my soul was trying to leave my body.
Her growls echoed in the room and bounced in the back of my skull. “The descendants of Damon will all die!”

She pulled her arms outward, and everything turned into darkness.

Soo good!!

This book was deliciously dark and gore filled! Enter a world where humans are hunted by vampires and live in “ walled” cites. Where you cannot trust your neighbor nor survive supply runs. You meet the MCs and I loved how they met and every confrontation afterwards. Very well written, amazing world building, awesome actions scenes, lots of blood and gore (only missing zombies!!) and the smexy times were 🔥🔥🔥🌶.

The chokehold this book had on me!!!! I wanted to try my hand at reading a darker novel than I'm use to and I am not disappointed AT ALL! The way this book keeps the reader locked in, has you questioning your sanity just a bit, and you still wanna keep reading, is exactly what I was needing! I will say to make sure you read the trigger warnings. If you are new to the darker reading side definitely prepare yourself. YD has a beautiful dark mind and I'm here for it!!

All of my reviews can be found at Glowstars.net

I’m not usually one to read post-apocalyptic dystopian fantasy but I’d read a YD La Mar book even if it were clean romance, so I found myself picking up this one with a healthy dose of curiosity. I was not disappointed.

The world has become overrun with vampires, divided into five territories, only one comprising human resistance. Fitri is a hybrid with very little knowledge of her past. Hiding disguised as a boy, she’s living in a human settlement when she’s noticed by Elisio and coerced into training with him and his team for their ventures beyond the compound to scavenge for supplies. Elisio soon discovers part of Fitri’s secret, but she’s not the only one keeping things hidden. Some of those secrets could threaten their very survival.

I found the book to be a little confusing at times. I desperately wanted a timeline for all of Fitri’s returning memories and to slot things neatly into place but I wasn’t given that. It was actually a pretty clever move on La Mar’s part as I can only imagine that Fitri would feel the same way.

The story is super steamy. The tension that grows between Fitri and Elisio really got me going until it combusted in the best possible way (and continued throughout). In some ways, it seemed that the same tension was present between Fitri and other team members (especially Reed) but nothing ever came from it. And here was I hoping for some last-minute reverse harem action. 😂

The one thing that stopped me from giving the book that final fifth star was that it felt unfinished to me. I wanted to know exactly what happened to the team in the aftermath of them fleeing their home and a summary epilogue wasn’t cutting it. I needed explanations and dilemmas, maybe some more emotional trauma and most definitely something else that tied this story in with the rest of the series. But even without all those things I still enjoyed the book and look forward to picking up some of the other Games of the Underworld novels.

Marked For Execution by YD LA Mar is a dark post-apocalyptic tale in a dystopian society overrun by Vampires. Fitri never fits in wherever she goes; she runs from town to town, surviving.  She is different and has found people do not like others that are different. She has learned not to draw attention to herself and dresses like a man to discourage the attention of men. Her memories are fragmented, but she knows something terrible has happened to her. She finds herself on Eliseo's radar, but when Fitri prepares to run again, she is surprised when he invites her to train with his group to go on runs. Eventually, the two give in to the lust between them. Maybe this time, things will be different. However, there are still lots of secrets yet to be revealed.  Will what she has with Eliseo and the men be what she's been missing or will everything be too much in a town of secrets and betrayal?
Marked For Execution is part of a series called Games of the Underworld, written by multiple authors in a shared universe.  I will be checking out the other books.  The world-building is incredible. There are numerous vampire clans and various mutations and powers. The humans that are left aren't much better than the vampires. The characters are what you would expect in this messed-up world, hiding secrets and baggage. Fitri has become part of a little-found family that has learned to accept and protect each other through everything.
The relationship between Fitri and Eliseo is off the chart spicy, at a level 5.  They have an age-gap romance where Eliseo is old enough to be her father; he dominates and takes care of her the way a father would. Fitri is not typically submissive, but she loves to please him! They share all kinds of kinks, spanking, edging, Blood play, and biting. If you have triggers, I suggest you read the warnings before reading because I am sure I don't have them listed here.  I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. If you like age-gap romances set in dystopian societies where the alphahole will do anything to take care of his girl and protect her from evil vampires and monstrous humans, Marked For Extinction is a must-read for you.

Phew!!!
I was SO EXCITED about release day for this book and MAN! It did not disappoint. After reading the prequel to this series, I knew I had to get each book and this is the first of many to come, each by a bestselling indie author.

The world has been infected by a virus that turns humans into vampires. Now there are four sects of vamps, each with their own special supernatural skills set… and only one sect of humans. In this book, we meet a group of the humans. They forage for supplies and fight vamps, all while developing personal relationships and trying to figure out how to survive in this new world.

I was blown away by YD’s take on the human world and how they interact with each other and the vampires. And let’s talk about the creepy doctor and his dungeon experiments. *shudder*. That dude is the stuff nightmares are made of. This is unlike any series I’ve ever read. It’s incredibly hard to put down once you read that first chapter! Gah.

A dystopian future ruled by vampire clans from the 4 corners of the world. Humans used as food or turned in to new vampires. Humans gathered in small resistance groups trying to stay alive. This book follow such a group and their struggle to survive at any cost. No one believes they will stand a chance to survive. But our FMC and her band of tough guys fight the fight. And in the middle of all of this love pops up and bring some spice to the story. Which is a great thing the book comes with some triggers so be sure to check them out before reading. But all I can say is I want to know what's in future for our resistance group and what will the vampires do next to enslave humanity. The book is fast paced with action. violence and some good old spice to make it a read that you cant put away I read it in one sitting, Its that good so make sure you follow the games of the Underworld true all the books to see if there will be a HEA or if we are all doomed. May the resistance prevail go ahead and read the book and give them your support.

If you need a book that you absolutely cannot put down, this is it! YD does a marvelous job of drawing you in and then she doesn’t let go. Eliseo is a stud (even for an old guy). He’s a born leader, but he’s also observant. Fitri is just looking for a place to hide. Her memories are foggy and she just wants to survive. She is forced into joining forces with “the team” (more studs - Reed, Gunner and Samuel) and it is magical. I love the team dynamics. Was hoping it would lead to more but the claim of Eliseo is strong! Their missions left me on the edge of my seat and that darn crazy doctor! I want to know what’s up with him. I absolutely cannot wait to see how this series plays out. If you love dark romance, vampires, and/or post apocalyptic, this book is right up your alley and you absolutely NEED it in your life!

Regeneration

YD La Mar’s most recent book which is part of the “Games of the Underworld’ series is marked for excellence. I’ve read several fantastic books by this author and have never been disappointed. Her imagination just blows my mind with each book. This story deals with humans just trying to survive against evolving vampires. Where did vampires come from? Did vampires come to be due to a virus or an airborne agent? That’s a couple questions the characters in this story is trying to figure out. This book has plenty of exciting adventure, mystery, suspense, and steamy situations that is so riveting I couldn’t put it down until the very last page. I can’t wait to see what this author has planned next. Highly recommended and definitely a MUST read!

Great start to the series!

I have so many questions!!! First one is why isn't this an RH??? All of the team are just soooo yummy. Eliseo is so ott/jp as alpha as you can get. All in the best ways of course. While I respected Reed and Gunner for seeing how much he needed Fitri, it was definitely a missed opportunity in my mind. This brings me to Fitri!!! I need answers, while we got some of her history from her nightmares and people they ran into, sooo much is still a mystery. I really hope these characters pop back up in the upcoming books because I need more of them. I need a sequel!!! I have a feeling all of these books are going to leave me feeling like this. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!!!

⭐️-Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
🌶-Rating: 🌶🌶🌶🌶/5

Triggers/Tropes: Dystopian World, Found Family, "Touch Her & Die," Grumpy Aphah0lə, Spitfire FMC, Age-Gap, Graphic Səx Scenes, D/s-ish Content, Graphic Violence & Gore—including lots of blood, decapitation, and amputation, N0n-C0n/SA—off page & happens in fragmented memories, Self-Hªrm, Mention of Cannibalism, So Much Death, etc.

H0ly frikkin' sh¡tə, where do I start!?

Let's start with the ending bc it miffed me. These novels are interconnected standalones—meaning they all share the same world but usually have different starring casts. With that in mind, this one ended almost like an HFN or a cliffhanger. It felt like an open-ended ending, maybe we'll see more of Eliseo, Fitri, & the guys? Honestly? I really fucking hope so bc to say I loved this little found family is an understatement!

Fitri is a badass, spitfire who's gone through a lot. Eliseo has seen his fair share of sh¡tə too. He's a grumpy, alphaholə w/ the most delicious dominant side. There are moments where Fitri realizes & thinks abt his dominant side before speaking that made me absolutely melt. Otherwise, Fitri's attitude often has Eliseo calling her a brat—internally and to her face. It's just how their dynamic works, which is cute as hell.

Their banter had me smiling from ear to ear. For a more horror-ish type of romance, I smiled a lot. Even in the thick of some heavy stuff, these two found absolutely adorable ways to bicker.

𝓢𝓱𝓮 𝓰𝓻𝓸𝔀𝓵𝓮𝓭 𝓵𝓲𝓴𝓮 𝓪𝓷 𝓪𝓷𝓰𝓻𝔂 𝓴𝓲𝓽𝓽𝓮𝓷, 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓶𝔂 𝓭𝓲𝓬𝓴 𝓽𝔀𝓲𝓽𝓬𝓱𝓮𝓭.

The way their relationship started, I loved. How Eliseo saw her made me swoon and the same goes for Fitri coming to understand her feelings for Eliseo. Their chemistry was frikkin' EVERYTHING!

The world building was *chef's kiss* as was the character development. I absolutely adore Samuel, Reed, and Gunner too. The plot kept me engaged, I found myself trying to figure things out even after I put the book down for the night.

This is book two in the GOTU series of standalones and it comes out 9/18/22. Def. a good one to read for the upcoming sp00ky szn. 🖤

If I could give 10 stars I would!
This book grabbed me right from the get go and just didn’t let go. So I drank alot of coffee and forget sleeping. You literally get transported in this world where survival is everything and vampires are at war with everyone.
Friti and Elieso’s will give you all those feels, with a bada$$ h who I have to admit gave me a small woman crush. A grumpy H who shows all that alpha qualities that we all love. A team of men who is more family that always have each other backs. Crazy doctor, cults, those VAMPIRES, had me turning the pages wondering what was going to happen next. The story does end with a HFN and I totally can’t wait for more.

Wow! I am blown away 💣 I read Crimson Mourning to get the backstory and this book starts off smoothly from it. There's so much going on! Vampires, air borne viruses, twists & turns, suspense, action....so much action, and some reallyyyy good 🥵🥵🥵 Friti and Elieso are the main characters and I'm obsessed with their chemistry. They have a love hate relationship at first that turns into some awesome kink towards the end. The team of resistors mesh really well together and have each others backs. The ending left off with the group entering a territory and I can't WAIT to read the 3rd book in the series! 🔥

Wow. I was absolutely hooked by the prologue. I couldn’t read fast enough. The storyline was amazing and in depths without being overwhelming. I loved the strong characters. Fitri is an awesome lead female and proves herself and her worth to the story over and over. Eliseo is top dog, make no mistake alpha. I loved his sarcastic wit. The chemistry between the main characters is off the charts! Lots of steam. The interaction with the other characters was hilarious at times and they each bring their own personality to the story. This is a must read and I cannot wait to see how this series plays out.

Set in a dystopian world build. Where humans are ruled by vampires. This book delivers a strong storyline with fantastic alpha characters who must fight, pillage, and risk their lives to survive. There are vampires, humans, hybrids galore. You will read bloody gore, action, drama and somehow along the way the author gives us a little love. You will be immersed in this world from start to finish. This page-turner will keep you glued to the pages and maybe read it in one sitting. Think this is a very solid beginning to a new series and look forward to becoming familiar with this world and characters.

I loved this so freaking much!!!
I was locked immediately in a chokehold from the beginning and stay captivated throughout each page. I swear that Y.D. La Mar enchants her writing, because everything she has written keeps me locked and engaged until I've consumed the story with extreme ferocity. Marked for Execution was no different!
It is a dystopian story with banter, action packed scenes, suspense, lust, & lots of bloody gore.
The only complaint is that it wasn't longer, but that's okay because this is book one of the Games of the Underworld Anthology. I will definitely be reading the rest of them.
Highly recommend this book and other books by Y.D. La Mar!

For my first YD La Mar read I was hoping for violence and spice in this dark dystopian future. It's safe to say they were delivered. The two main characters had some mad good chemistry that came to life on the pages (yum, yum, yum). The side characters were welcomed additions to the story - there are even several laughs along the way. The world building was well done - especially considering this is standalone book 2 of the Games of the Underworld series, which are all written by different authors. I'll definitely be adding more reads by this author to my TBR!

I'd rate this about 3.5 Stars. I really enjoyed this book. I struggled to stick with the storyline throughout the beginning because there were some points where I was lost. I wasn't sure how to feel. I wanted to enjoy the spicy scenes, but I was also enjoying the vampire aspect and really wanted more there. I got through half the book and wasn't really feeling invested in any of the characters. It picked up speed after this point and man, did I really enjoy it. Overall it was a great book and would recommend it.

This was my first book written by YD La Mar. I read the prequel to this series and wanted to see what’s going to happen in the Games of the Underworld.
I really enjoyed this story and YDs writing. (Have to check out her books) I love the main and side characters and their camaraderie. It was hard putting the book down. I have to say the ending did leave me a bit hanging. I feel like there is more to find out about the group.
I am looking forward to the next book released within this series.

Peace was for fools who still believed it existed. Hope was an infection that didn’t discriminate.

I absolutely LOVED this book. A feisty, badass MC, great chemistry and banter between our couple, and hot as hell spice had me devouring this book. The world building was just phenomenal! This world has just about every type of craziness you could possibly imagine with vampire clans,a cult, human settlements, and even a psycho doctor up to no good. It’s gory, disturbing, and bloody!

“I need to feel you deeper. I need you so badly,” she whined. “Shit, Sili. You can have whatever the fuck you want, especially if it’s my dick inside of you.”

This is one that you’ll definitely want to check the trigger warnings before reading because it’s definitely DARK. The ending felt more like a HFN or slight cliffhanger, which I DIDN’T love, but I can’t wait to see where in this crazy world the rest of the books in this series take us!

Fitri and Eliseo are steaming hot! Funny with banter and down right desirable with their connection. Fitri is on the run for her life being a hybrid (human/vampire) when she joins a communoty of humans she hides her true self but is Eliseo she is drawn to what will happen when her secret is revealed? Well written engaging and leaves you craving more!

Full of action, suspense, angst and lots of steam!!! I couldn't put it down! We get both Eliseo and Fitri pov, which I loved. If you like vampires, end of the world or just a great storyline full of twists and turns this will be perfect for you. Do be aware of the trigger warnings, because it is a darker read. Overall, i loved it! Such a fantastic start into a new world.

so awesome

The world building in this book was fabulous . The characters personalities were complimentary to the theme of this book. The fmc is a total baddie and a half vamp. There was a good amount of gore and the steam was also pretty good for this type of book. I can’t get over how good this book is. It’s definitely a keeper.

This was a great vampire story. It was a great story and I couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed seeing Fitri and Eliseo together. Every time you thought they were going to be alright there was another twist or turn. I loved the suspense.
