The Giller Prize, now The Scotiabank Giller Prize, was founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch in honour of his late wife, literary journalist Doris Giller. The award recognizes excellence in Canadian fiction endows the largest cash prize for literature in the country. This anthology celebrates the fifteenth anniversary of the Prize by showcasing selections or short stories from the past winners as well as the 2008 finalists.
This wonderful collection of excerpts from the first 15 years of the Giller Prize was a trip down memory lane. Surprisingly, in totting it all up, I had already read seven of the previous winning books. Of the works included, I only took a strong distaste to "Cockroach" by Ravi Hage (one of the 2008 nominees). Favorites include the two Alice Munro entries, as well as the quite simply touching introduction by the founder of the Giller, Jack Rabinovitch. We, as Canadians, have much to thank this man for.
