Life doesn’t come with a map. Maybe you’re going the right way after all.
It is the morning of Ellie Warren’s wedding day and she is hiding under her childhood bed. She cannot shake the feeling that she isn’t where she’s supposed to be – the marriage, that is – but she can’t work out how she ended up here or where exactly she should be.
Ellie knows there wasn’t just one decision that led her to this day. Her life is made up of billions of choices but some of them must have changed the course of her life forever. Ellie is sure that if she can just find those moments, work out where she went wrong in the past, then maybe she can make things right in the present.
But what if Ellie is exactly where she is meant to be? What if all the missed opportunities and paths never taken are leading her to happiness?
You Are Here is a novel about how the tiniest of choices can cause ripples through our lives. In the tradition of Sliding Doors and In Five Years, this novel explores what could have been while also reminding us to have a little faith in what’s about to happen
Eva Woods lives in London, where she writes and teaches creative writing. She likes wine, pop music, and holidays, and thinks online dating is like the worst board game ever invented.
Now Eva Woods wrote one of my all time favourite books so she is naturally an auto buy author for me so when I saw this on #Netgalley and got approved to review it I was over the moon.
Sadly it absolutely did not live up to it. Elli has the wedding jitters and reflects on all the what ifs of her life. What would have happened if she had made different choices. Now where I find the idea of it intriguing the execution was just bad. The whole beginning I was confused because I found it hard to find the line between the choices and it just felt all over the place and like reading two separate stories. No matter which choice Ellie made she would end miserable which just made the whole reading experience depressing. And then once you have figured out which path of choices Ellie chose which is about 50% of the book I just did not see anymore sense in continuing with presenting me with choices I knew she had not made. Overall I felt bored, confused and just like someone had two book ideas and squeezed them together without any real connection.
I usually find Eva Woods books very emotional, uplifting and full of life. It breaks me to say this just wasn't that. I would have liked it if it would just have been a how I ended here with the proper choices cause that would have given room to build the characters more and made it able to relate to them more and feel for them more. Sadly 2.5 stars from me.
Thank you for #Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
It's the morning of Ellie's wedding and she's got wedding jitters. Is she making the right choice? We then go back and see all the choices she's made to get her to this point. Really enjoyed the concept for this one was really intriguing to see how one tiny decision could change the whole course of your life. It almost felt like a choose your own adventure as you get to see how both her decisions would play out. Overall I thought it felt very relatable and I liked the characters and especially liked how Ellie and her mother's relationship unfolded. Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC.
Oh I just loved reading 'You Are Here', a romcom with the right level of intrigue mixed in to keep me gripped, and plenty of cliff-hangers in each section to keep me reading on! Ellie has always struggled to make a decision, almost paralysed in her decision making by spending ages thinking about what might happen in all possible scenarios and unable to commit to anything.
The book starts on her wedding day but she's not sure that the groom is the One for her so she goes back through her life trying to see what has brought her to this point and if she can decide what the right way forward is.
The story was so cleverly crafted, at each junction you can see what would happen in either scenario, from her choice of university and choice of subject, to what happened after university - where she lived, what job she has, who she dates, and the infinite way that each choice spirals out with wide reaching consequences was brilliantly thought through. There are some consistent characters as well as Ellie, her best friend from childhood and her university friends, who have had their own lives affected by various decisions Ellie has made through her life.
As someone who can struggle to make a decision quickly, I fully empathised with Ellie and her indecisive nature, I have spent lots of time thinking 'what if....' - and this was explored well. The book kept me thinking and keen to find out where Ellie would end up.
Thanks to Little, Brown for the ARC- 4.5 stars rounded up!
You Are Here is a clever and thought-provoking novel that will make you question the choices you’ve made in your own life, and is one of my favourite books I’ve read so far this year. The book is is a brilliant mix of relatable, likeable characters and a sliding-doors-style ‘what if?’ plot (and who doesn’t love those?) which is clever, fun and so addictive to read!
I loved the main character Ellie. She is convincing, interesting and, although she’s not perfect in her decisions, she’s very likeable. She also has that very common problem of either struggling to make a decision or, if she has made a decision, wondering forever afterwards if she’s made the right one, or how things might have turned out if one decision in her life had been different. And that forms the basis of this book.
We join Ellie at the start as she prepares to marry her fiancé – who exactly this is, we don’t know – but Ellie is wondering is she’s making the right decision, and whether other choices in her life would lead to this same point or a very different kind of life. Therein, we see two alternate outcomes for every key decision in her life, starting with the university and course she picks. The plot then cleverly guides us through the alternative routes of Ellie’s life, showing us how one small change can make such a big difference…
You Are Here has humorous, poignant and surprising moments, but it’s a really fun, entertaining read. I absolutely raced through it, and although you could argue the ending tied things up a little too neatly, I loved the entire book from start to finish!

She cannot shake the feeling that she isn’t where she’s supposed to be – the marriage, that is – but she can’t work out how she ended up here or where exactly she should be. I really enjoyed this one! I didn't expect it to be the sort of book it was, with the layout of choices and everything but I still enjoyed it.
I think this can really resonate with people who are at that stage in life where they are torn and do not know what decisions to make to benefit themselves and their lives, as it shows that every decision made can change the whole path of your life.
I love the way the chapters were split up and how we got to see each outcome of Ellie's decisions.
I rated this 4 stars! Thank you to the publishers for the e-arc :)!
This is a great concept about the choices we’ve made in lives and not always the big obvious ones but sometimes the seemingly insignificant. Ellie is hours away from getting married when she’s struck with doubts about going ahead with it so she looks back on her life at various decisions she’s made that have ultimately led her to this day. Told in the style of a choose your own path story each decision is played out two ways and we find out which decisions Ellie made as the book progressed. This works well but I just didn’t take to Ellie herself especially the modern day version trying to work out if marriage is the right choice. Her life and the various ways it could have gone were well thought out yet it felt she was almost passive too. Overall this a thoughtful and thought provoking read and it was good to read something in a different style.
I have read and loved all of this aunties other books so I was looking forward to Reading this one.
This is a very relatable story about life And the choices we make And how those choices shape The future. Those of a Certain age will also be able to relate and reflect on the various life changing events which are mentioned in the novel particularly if you were growing up in the 1990s and can remember all of The hype surrounding the advent. Of the millennium.
The book was split into the different storylines based on the decisions and Choices that Ellie could make and the paths that she actually chose. I found this a little confusing at first but then got into the swing of it.
This book was certainly different to the style of the authors other books And look forward To seeing what she writes next.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion. I loved 'sliding doors' so the plot of this book appealed to me. I thought it was well-written and the numerous characters are credible, as are the events. Each choice and ensuing outcome are clearly defined with dates, but there are so many, featuring most of the main characters, that at times it was a little confusing. I liked the ending, and the question we are left with - are there many parallel universes, do our choices affect the final outcome or do we have a predestined path, and does it matter anyway, 'what ifs' versus 'what's done is done'? Overall, I enjoyed the book so much that I've signed up to follow the author.
An interesting take on the ‘sliding doors’ idea, where you get to see what would happen in your life if you’d made different choices at key moments in your life. Ellie is about to get married, but instead of having her hair and make up done, she’s hiding under her bed in her childhood room, wondering if she’s doing the right thing, or should she take a chance and do something completely different. The story then visits each choice that she’s made over the years to see what would have happened, had she made two different choices - from moving to Paris, having a baby to becoming a doctor. Interesting concept and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Recommended.
If you like the film 'Sliding Doors', you will want to read 'You are Here.' This well-written story, with the same concept as the film, is fascinating and entertaining. All of your choices have led you to where you are now. This is a thought-provoking idea, no matter how often it's used!
The dual timelines within the plot are relatable, along with a handful of intriguing characters. This became a fast-paced read for me. It was great to see what Ellie's life would have been like. The writing style made me want to read more by the author.
Please note; there are some sensitive topics discussed within this story, and I advise readers to research any trigger warnings.
'You are Here' is a book that is worth pre-ordering. It will make an ideal summer 2023 read!
Release Date: 11th May 2023
Thank you, NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group, for a gifted copy of this book.
I feel like this book is better for people who can relate to the main character, because while I enjoyed the book and thought it was a really cool concept pulled off really well, and realistic (we all second guess all of our choices) I just didn’t really relate to the main struggles of the character. Some problems more so than others, I felt more empathic about Ellie picking her A-levels than her marrying the wrong person. This was a good book which was written really well but I don’t think I was the right audience for the story to have the same effect it would have on someone older going through similar things
A brilliant concept. I've always been a believer that im life we have a choice of two pathways and in this book Ellie is questioning if she should actually get married as she thinks back to what actually got her there to that very day. We don't normally see th8s in a book and it was a refreshing change! Thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in return for an honest review
I enjoyed the book to begin with and then I started to like the character less and less as she made poor choices and was just a bit whiney. It was quite dull and depressing
An interesting concept but I feel that is was badly executed and very dull. A depressing read and I DNF as it was such a slog. Shame as it seemed promising .
The story starts with Ellie hiding under her childhood bed on her wedding day, unsure as to how she ended up there.
We follow Ellie's story on her wedding day in 2019 and through various points in her past when she makes some big choices in her life. Ellie comes across as quite a neurotic character who really worries over the decisions she makes, and what she thinks her life should look like. At times I did get a bit annoyed with her focusing so much on what others had in their lives, while not going and getting the things she really wanted! In the end it appears Ellie has a moment of clarity and realisation to follow her heart.
Overall, I loved the book and the relationships the main character had with those closest to her. At times we all worry about the big decisions we make so it really was relatable. It was the first book I've read by this author but I will definitely be reading more.
I found this confusing at first and then depressing. I get the regret genre, we all wonder what if. But every outcome was beyond awful, and it was compounded by a selfish conclusion that was like karma in reverse.
I loved this. The references and air of the choose your own adventure books was so nostalgic - you’d think a story that branches off into so many possibles paths and plots would be confusing to follow, but it wasn’t! Just totally gripping instead! I love the powerful exploration of fate in this, as I truly believe that choices as small as getting the tube or bus can change your life. There were some very tragic moments in this and, when we see the other paths that could have been taken, it results in such a life affirming read.
I absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down, an entralling read. Such a refreshing twist on the chick lit genre, reminiscent of the Choose Your Own Adventure series I adored as a child. A relatable love story about the paths you choose to take in life or don't. All the what ifs, and the idea that maybe you end up where you're always meant to be, whatever choices you make.
"And maybe that was what it was all about. Choosing the path you couldn't see down, which could be filled with disaster and loss, because you knew you were walking it with the right person."
