With over 25 activities, A Little Dose of Nature is a gentle guide to being outside that helps children aged 5-8 make the most of all the good that nature can do for our mental health.
Being surrounded by greenery, wildlife, and fresh air is scientifically proven to be one of the most effective—and neglected—ways to de-stress and boost wellbeing. This book introduces young readers to nature’s five “key ingredients,” which can provide cognitive and emotional benefits. From observing the branching patterns of roots and leaves that mimic our own anatomies, to the power of sunlight, rainfall, and birdsong, readers young and old will discover how to notice and appreciate what nature does for them, their minds, and their bodies.
Each of these key ingredients is explored through a range of simple, relaxing activities that children, parents, and carers can do in their favorite green spaces, Written by psychologist Dr. Alison Greenwood and with gorgeous illustrations from Anneli Bray , A Little Dose of Nature introduces an easily accessible tonic for difficulty and distress, and encourages us all to get our dose of nature for a happy, healthy life.
Absolutely wonderful nature book for the entire family. Would absolutely purchase, gift and recommend.
This book is aimed at kids and caregivers to learn about and experience/play in nature together. We Homeschool, and go to Forest School once a week, this book taught ME things I had NO idea about. Full of well laid out explanations, wonderful illustrations and easy to do nature projects (like making a mandala, and going on a sound chase). This is a book you’ll continually use instead of a one time read.
Artwork is fully inclusive of all walks of life as well, including disabled children, and that completely warms my heart.
ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
A Little Dose of Nature is a beautiful children's non-fiction, picture book that encourages and explains to children why it's important for our mental health and wellbeing to spend time outdoors. Children today (including my own) don't get to enjoy the outdoors as much as we did thirty years ago and it is important we encourage outdoor activities away from social media and gaming and for so many other reasons as explained in this book. The book covers Nature's Fractals, The Scuence of sounds, Fresh Air, Soil, Soaking up the sunshine, and a message from the author at the back. I loved reading this and found it would be great for science and PSHE lessons in school as well as forest school too. There are several activities linked to each topic for children to try with a grown up and the illustrations are just adorable.
This book is so beautiful!!!! The cover is a bit underwhelming but the contents is chef’s kiss!
The illustrations are outstanding and it will melt your heart.
I feel like I am more in touch with nature while reading this book as I am more of an indoors person. And this is exactly the purpose of such books! To feel and enjoy the natural environment more.
You will feel calm as soon as you start with the first page. Also, the information provided on the terms that might be new to the young readers is well explained with simple words alongside the illustrations.
Trust me you will be really happy while reading this book. I don’t think there would be a soul who would turn away from this book once they set their eyes on the first page!
Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group - Ivy Kids, for the advance reading copy.
This book is adorably whimsical. The pictures depict a beautifully diverse cast of children, showing that all children have a place in nature. The book was full of fun ideas while also sharing incredibly educational facts and benefits of the outdoors in a way that engages young children. My children were excited to partake in the activities and we look forward to doing them again in spring and summer.
Written by a psychologist, A Little Dose of Nature endeavors to inspire an awe for nature and spending more time outside for improved mental health, and I think it does just that! Divided into sections about nature's fractals, sounds, fresh air, soil, and sunshine, each section explains the science behind it (in a way that even younger kids can understand) and includes fun activities for kids to do to connect with nature. My kids loved searching for fractals and making mandalas and potions, among other activities.
The details are really what make this book stand out from others in its category. From the message at the beginning about the eco-conscious production process to the author's heartfelt note at the end, A Little Dose of Nature really embraces the idea of simple, intentional choices making a big impact. I highly recommend this book to all families!
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Ivy Kids and NetGalley for gifting my family with an ARC to review. We adored it!
This is a fun little non-fiction book. It is what one would expect from a title like this for this age, but also a bit different. The book looks at concepts not always seen in this level of book. It jumps out of the gate talking about Fractals, where, how and, why they are found in nature. Then it talks about smells and what makes them at the chemical level. This was nicely done and very informative.
A pretty decent little look at the benefits of being in the outside world, and using nature to excite our senses and make us feel better. We have to spot fractal elements in nature, sense the sun, get down and mucky, absorb the whatsits from the trees and learn to listen out for natural sounds – all will give us a fillup from our everyday, indoors life and give us more of what our bodies want. What tasks and suggestions for activities there are are perfectly simple to do, and while there is not too much to this it has a clearer approach to the science than some young tree-hugging guides I've seen.
This title includes twenty-five activities for kids and their adults, all of which are about spending time in nature. The author begins by noting that there are five active nature elements that help people; these will give us more energy, better concentration and sleep, will help us to relax, and to be in a better mood. These elements inclde fractal patterns, nature sounds, phytoncides, soil bacteria and sunlight Don’t know what all of these mean? Turn the pages of this colorfully illustrated title to find out. Everyone will benefit and enjoy time spent away from screens.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions are my own.
What a superb book full of amazing ideas to get children in tune and involved with nature. I’ve worked with Dr Greenwood whilst doing community outreach, for adults and children and this book suggests lovely ways for children (And adults) to get ‘a dose of nature’. I will certainly be taking the ideas forwards, getting children and adults alike outside and will suggest purchasing this books to some of the families I work with!
Thank you netgalley and publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
A Little Dose of Nature is a beautifully illustrated collection of fun outdoor activities for the whole family. Throughout the book, the author Dr. Alison Greenwood, shares the importance of spending time outside. Most of the exercises and activities do not need additional materials and are easy enough for a child to do them on their own.
A Little Dose of Nature is focused toward elementary age children but could be adapted to any age. This book would be a great addition to any school library or homeschool science curriculum.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Ivy Kids (Ivy Kids Eco)!
With over 25 mindful activities, this book will help you make the most of all the good that nature does for us.
🌿 We all know that being outdoors is good for us - but do we know why? This book focuses on five active ingredients in nature that can help us feel more energetic, improve our concentration, help us sleep better, feel more relaxed and boost our mood. These are:
🌿 Did you know?! Phytoncides are chemicals that all plants and trees give off. Phytoncides get rid of things that might attack the plant. When we breathe then in, our bodies make special ‘natural killer’ cells that protect us from disease! Breathing in Phytoncides also lowers our stress, helps us sleep better and can help us feel brighter and more relaxed!
🌿Fractals are repeated patterns in nature and can be found everywhere if we just take the time to look. Branches, feathers, snowflakes and flowers are all examples. There are some wonderful activities suggested in the book for looking more closely at fractals: collecting natural treasures, making art with them and watching clouds and stars in the sky. There’s a beautiful page showcasing a ‘mandala’ which can be made from nature. This would make a wonderful activity if you’re out on a walk or at school.
🌿 Some of the other activities suggested are: 🍃 Going on a sound chase - use a timer and see how many sounds you can ‘collect’ in one minute. 🍃 Go on a scavenger hunt for different smells. 🍃 Make a potion from some natural items, crushing them to see what they smell like. 🍃 Making a wormery
🌿 This is a brilliant book to help you get the most out of being outdoors. We can’t wait to try some of the activities out! Huge thank you to for sending this book to us for review. A Little Dose of Nature is out now! Link to buy in stories.
🌿 We love Ivy Kids books. They look and feel beautiful and what’s more, the books are made from 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper and they print here in the UK!
Get your daily dose of nature in this delightful picture book by Alison Greenwood as she walks young readers through the benefits of being outside and enjoying nature.
This book focuses on five active ingredients in nature that help keep our brains and bodies healthy. With engaging text and colorful, age-appropriate illustrations, this book shows readers how being outside can improve concentration and sleep, boost energy and mood, and help us feel more relaxed. It gently guides readers through twenty-five simple and creative activities to maximizes these benefits. They’re all easy and enjoyable.
This book is So. Much. Fun! I LOVED it! It's informative and inspiring. Motivating. Straight-forward and easy-to-understand, it will certainly appeal to its target audience of five to eight year olds. But older readers will enjoy it, too.
I’m a lifelong nature lover and I learned a lot! I’ll be sure to add A Little Dose of Nature to my backpack the next time I hit the trails, beaches, parks, or woods. I’ll also keep it handy the next time I stargaze, go on a sound chase, a birdsong walk, or "treelaxation." Phytoncides!
Bonus points: A Little Dose of Nature is printed on recycled paper “made from 100% post-consumer waste.” This one's a keeper!
This is a lovely little book of simple nature activities that really teaches kids (and grown ups) about the benefits of nature. The activities are quite simple like making a nature mandala or “collecting” natural sounds. It’s interspersed with so much accessible information about the science behind how nature helps us, which is sure to convince kids and adults alike to get outside more.
The book is written by a psychologist who founded a charity to teach kids and adults about the benefits of nature. It does an excellent job of this with activities suited for toddlers and up.
Another area where this book shines is the inclusion. Not only are the kids and adults wonderfully diverse but I counted 10 different kids and adults in wheelchairs (and one featured twice). I am used to seeing perhaps one character in a wheelchair in a book these days (there used to be virtually none) but here there are 10 in a 32 page book.
This will be a great read for elementary aged kids and their grown ups. Recommended.
I read a temporary digital arc of this book via NetGalley.
A Little Does of Nature would be a great book for school children and teachers who are learning about the outdoors and nature. There are many activities throughout the book that kids could do outdoors for hands on activities. Finding fractals would tie into mathematics, making mandalas and scavenging for objects that make noises are all things that help children learn more about the environments they are in.
The illustrations are well drawn and explanatory. It's laid out like a text book almost with column and sections devoted to the different topics of interest. It's a book that could be used for more than a few days during a school week - possibly even an entire week. There are 6 total sections of the book, or chapters almost - and each is devoted to a different element of the outdoors. A few could be combined in a single day.
The author, Alison Greenwood, is a psychologist and explains at the end of the book that spending more time outdoors is better for our mind and our bodies. This book is a great tool for kids to help them find ways to spend more time outdoors and also get adults outside to help, in turn giving them a good dose of nature too. #ALittleDoseofNature #NetGalley
We live in a world where so many of our children (and let's be honest, adults alike) are hunkering down inside and are generally fixated over some kind of device. As a global society we have forgotten how to be outside to get our much needed dose of nature. Dr. Alison Greenwood has created a wonderful nonfiction book for children (and their device hungry parents) to learn how to bloom outdoors in A Little Dose of Nature. She incorporates on each page the science behind nature topics like patterns we can notice outside, breathing in phytoncides and playing in the mud. All these acts can help us lead our children to a healthier and happier life. The book also includes activities that can done while you're out getting your daily dose! Anneli Bray's illustrations really bring the science and everyday experiences to life. Get your copy from your favourite book store March 6th...and be sure to read it outside!
Many thanks to Quarto Publishing, Alison Greenwood and NetGalley for the advanced copy of A Little Dose of Nature in return for my unbiased review.
This beautifully illustrated book is an absolute joy that focuses on the natural world. Although it is written for ages 5-8, I think even adults could learn a thing or two from some of the activities outlined in the book to support their mental health.
Using colourful illustrations, the book guides the reader through using all the senses to explore nature and support mental wellbeing. It also outlines 25 activities to help do this.
I think this book will be useful for parents and educators alike. I will be recommending it to local Beaver and Cub Scout leaders to help support, maintain and improve our local young people's mental health and wellbeing.
I really enjoyed this book. I work in mental health, primarily with kiddos, and am always looking for ways to teach my clients the mental health benefits of being outside in nature. I would definitely buy this book to go through with clients or lend it out. There is a wealth of knowledge in here that is presented at an age appropriate level. The activities are really cool & I may try some of them out with my own children, despite them being a little young yet for this book. I also loved that the book illustrations were so inclusive.
I received an advanced digital copy of this book, courtesy of the publisher, via NetGalley. This does not impact my review.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I love the illustrations and colors in here as well as the information about nature. This is written in a very digestible manner that children can easily understand. I also enjoyed the different activities included here where we can see/hear/experience the information given to us such as making a sundial or sunbathing, making our own mandala, sniff like a dog, etc.
Excellent tour of the senses in the wide world outside with all kinds of activities to share and provide fun learning. She had me at "sniff like a schnauzer". Some of the kids are in wheelchairs. The illustrations by Anneli Bray are simply delightful, imaginative, and colorful. Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your public library! I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Quarto Publishing Group – Ivy Kids/Ivy Kids Eco via NetGalley. Thank you!
For us who live in the city, this book reminds us how nature helps us heal. With the pollution, high-rise buildings, noises we faced everyday, it is necessary to decompress. Moreover those who lived near airports or factories that produces loud noises and smokes, it is good to be able to escape from time to time. Nature can help us heal. Here's 5 ways you can use nature, told in simple words that kids can understand better.
This was such a cool book - I love the ideas for simple, free activities outside. My kiddo likely won’t care why they’re healthy and important things to do, but he’ll for sure love doing them!
Definitely recommend for parents with any age kiddos - the activities sound safe for any toddler up, and/or can be easily adapted!
I really liked that this highlighted different ways to use your senses within in nature. The illustrations are great too. A book my children and I will look through again and again.
I will be buying a physical copy of this book for my child who loves the outdoors! This book has such cute age appropriate activities for the littles I absolutely enjoyed it Thank you NetGalley & Ivy Kids Echo for this book!
I received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
I just LOVE LOVE books about nature and activities! And so when I saw this book up on Netgalley I just HAD to read it! I am so jelly of kids these days. I would have absolutely loved these books as a kid. Oh well, even as an adult I can do some of these activities. Given my mental health, I could use a boost. XD
This book contains 25 fun activities that will bring you happiness, joy, some new knowledge about nature, and more. Sounds fun right? Well, I was in for it! From fractals to mandala (as I said in another book about nature and activities, not sure if it was a Dutch book or English, I am already planning on making something like this one, but I got even more inspiration from this book) to sounds and much more. Each of the 5 sections give us some information on things and then have some fun activities. I had expected just to get 25 activities so this definitely made me smile. I also liked how the activities varied from just listening to getting creative to observing to creating. So much fun. I got several I just want to try out. Like that miniature garden~ Or sun portraits!
I really enjoyed the facts we get surrounding the activities + more. They were quite interesting to read. Some I knew, but some were knew to me.
Bonus points for the fact this book is apparently printed on recycled paper from 100% post-consumer waste. Not that my ebook is that, but for those getting the physical book it is a fun thing and I loved that this is happening more and more with books.
The art, OH MY GOSH, I just loved the art. It was so beautiful and I love love the style. I also love the diversity. Wheelchairs. Different skin colours. So happy that kids these days get to see so much diversity. I remember when I was a kid most illustrations featured white and abled kids.
All in all, these are some wonderful activities, not just for kids, but also for adults who could use some time away from it all and just want to relax and not think about things. I would recommend it!
Ivy Kids publish planet friendly books, every single book in the Ivy Kids print is an eco-book, printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, meaning the paper has previously been used and recycled, now to be used again for their books. It seems to be the perfect fit for A Little Dose of Nature by Dr Alison Greenwood and Anneli Bray. This is a gentle, informative and interactive guide to all the benefits that being outdoors, going outdoors, can have for our mental health, no matter what age we are. With over 25 mindful activities, things that give you the chance to take time to be quiet, reflect and do an activity in the outdoors all at the same time this book encourages us all to make o most of all the good that nature can do for us. And it is all based on just five ‘key ingredients’ that can make us feel happier, healthier, and more energised. Amazing!
So, what are they, these five keys? Fractal patterns, nature sounds, phytoncides (natural chemicals), soil bacteria and sunlight. Of all those you may be wondering avout the fractal? This is repeating patterns, look for them in leaves, shells, in the sky and maybe think about how you can make art with them. Nature sounds are all around us when we are outside, maybe you could stop and listen to the activity in a tree? As for natural chemicals these enter our bodies every time we breathe in fresh air, when we are around nature, they help us to feel calm. Soil bacteria and sunlight are more obvious but now, with these suggested activities you too can make sure you are getting enough of all of them.
