What's left of his homeland has fallen apart, so John Beck helps lead a migration north to a better future. But the trek to safety might be more dangerous than the places and people he's left behind. Can he navigate a wilderness in which brutality rules and hope is a dream? And if he succeeds, is what awaits him and those he leads true salvation or is it a fool's paradise? BETTER LATE is the fourth installment of The Crusader EMP Post-Apocalyptic Survival Series and is perfect for fans of Franklin Horton, Ryan Schow, Kyla Stone, Jack Hunt, and AR Shaw.
Sometimes when I go to write a review, I’m at a loss for words. Not because the book is terrible but because it was as good as I expected and more. I love reading Abrahams’s books; he’s able to fit so many different things into each title and come up with new and unique ways to mess up the world in each other series. In The Crusader series, we’ve met a man with demons and his extraordinary daughter doing everything she can to help people survive.
I don’t believe it’s a spoiler, but skip this paragraph if you’re worried – I love that Better Late was part of the main characters’ journey north and part prequel before D-Day. The prequel was a reminder of how bad it was when it started since it was from Beck’s daughter’s point of view. Hearing about the attack on the house from book one, how she got away, etc., all from her POV, was really… rewarding as a reader of Abrahams’s books. I applaud him for including it because it felt like he knew his readers wanted to know about it.
He could bounce back and forth throughout the story, and I got blindsided entirely when it ended. I was reading along, following their journey, and all of a sudden, BAM, the story was over. Now, that does not happen to me much in books. I have a pretty good idea of where I am, how much time is left, etc. But I was just so caught up in the story at the end that I figured it would keep going. It’s a cliffhanger but not the kind that makes me angry. It’s more of a newscaster/news station’s ability to get you to stick around for the story. I definitely want to hear more about the journey and what comes next, but if the story ended here for some reason, I’d also be fine.
John Beck and Millie are taking a group to safety in Canada.
Hopeful to find safety in Canada, Millie and friends and Millie's father, the legendary John Beck, journey through incessant obstacles toward freedom. The storyline drops back frequently to just after D-Day, the detonation of EMPs knocking out America's power. Permanently? Who knows. Anyway, the main storyline is the epic journey north to Canada, while the subplot tells of Millie's journey to escape Goose and find her father. Beck is enigmatic while Millie is a power developing, coming into her own bright future in a dark struggle. The storyline is amazing, the characters are wonderful, shining examples of the behavior each is portraying. They are complete badasses, or total heroes, or perfect supports that each was designed to show. I laughed, I cried, I howled with delight, I cursed the enemy, one thing I didn't do was stop reading! This is a great read!
I have been looking forward to Book 4 of The Crusader series. It was well worth the wait. I am a speed reader but when I started reading about Millie...I took my time to actually enjoy the book.
The only thing I questioned was the place where everyone congregated to receive assistance was in Memphis at the Pyramid. ( The irony of that it is now a Pro Bass Shop!)
What I have learned from this series is we need to teach our children how to be self sufficient. If something happens they need the skills and mindset to stay alive and to lead. Looking forward to reading book 5.
This series is a thriller of great magnitude. A rollercoaster of trials and tribulations of two of the main Millie and Beck trying to find each other in ZA long journey. All through those adverse conditions there was always HOPE. We as humans have that one thing in most of our DNA when all else fails we have this deep seeded hope for something better and strive for it. This series is a must read to show you there is always hope.
I really enjoyed this book. It is part of a series but can be enjoyed seperately as well, Great charcacters, a journey filled with problems and challenges and an ending that will satisfy you. In fact the series is great as are most of this authors books. I am looking forward to read more in the future
Tom Abrahams weaves another excellent tale. Whilst the switching back and forth in time does get a bit confusing, if you continue to stop reading occasionally, catching up is relatively easy. I’ve powered through the first four books in the series, I’ll finish the fifth and final (or so I believe) book in record time. Cudos as usual
Ill say it again each book in the series gets better!
Loved it, but too short. Did not want it to end, but it was at the perfect place. Enjoyed two stories in one book, Millie at d day and the trip to Canada. December 2022 is too far away. This series a must read.
I enjoyed this book and I have loved the series so far I can't wait to read the next one. The characters are engaging and entertaining and the storyline is good and well written.
Very well written. Plenty of dialog. Good characters. That's 3 stars. My problem is I have read too many EMP stories! This is Homer's Odyssey for modern times: Mythical Realism. But I just don't have time to finish it. :(
Author Abrahams weaves together two tales in Book 4: Millie’s life beginning at D-Day & the newly reunited Millie, John & company as they journey to what they hope will be a safer home. Of course, both stories are filled with danger and intrigue.
