They’re absconding for a day. But when trouble pursues this monarch-in-waiting, can they make a crafty escape and survive?
Princess Eloise Hydra Gumball III rarely gets a moment to breathe. So when her old friend suggests they steal away to an autumnal festival, the sixteen-year-old sneakily hitches a ride from Court with him so they can spend time together. But while bored waiting for a return carriage and sampling some delicious berries, they’re ambushed by a gang of vicious wombats… leaving the young royal unconscious.
Waking to find herself bound and gagged in a dirty burrow has Eloise squirming in repulsive discomfort. And even after her buddy rushes in to rescue her, it’ll take some smooth-talking and quick thinking if they’re both going to make it out alive.
Can the queen-to-be convince the near-blind band to set them free before they’re permanently burrowed?

Wow! What an awesome little prequel novelette that introduces us to the characters and world that is The Western Lands and All That Really Matters. Aimed at middle school (primary school here in Australia) I really think this could be enjoyed by all ages. The world building us quite unique with both humans and animals treated as equal citizens and the animals talking. So far it looks to be an agrarian world with ruling Royals ensconced in a castle and grounds. I absolutely loved our protagonist Princess Eloise, who begins our adventure by growing tired of her royal duties and sneaks out with her chipmunk best friend to travel to an Autumn Festival. Her friend is too funny and I loved the constant back and forth banter between the two. The most hilarious of the animals were the wombat bandits - The Wombanditos; the fiercest gang with bad eyesight in all the realms! Heeyahhhh! The animals were a wonderful mix of the common, American and Aussie and represent the author's view as a US expat now living in Australia. Such a fun, humorous read - I have added the next book to my TBR list.
I received a free ecopy of this novella from the author via Bookfunnel. I have voluntarily chosen to review the book and the gifting in no way influences my review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion.
This is very good idea for a book. I do enjoy readingthis story. I wish I have this book on my book shelf, because the design is amazing. I love the idea about this all monarchy. Amazing. I wish it was translate into polish. Very nice. The fantasy elements✅️ Princess 🤯🤩✅️ Humor✅️ Nice introduction into the series. I really like it. As the reader of (mainly) romantasy, so romance and fantasy, the fantasy part of my heart was content.
Having read the first 3 books in this series, it was no surprise that I adored this prequel. At 70 pages (according to Goodreads), it's a fast read and would make a great introduction to those who haven't yet set foot in "The Western Lands and All That Really Matters". "The Wombanditos" is fun, fantastic, and hugely satisfying. Grab a copy and treat yourself to what just might be the best comedic fantasy series around.
My thanks to the author. This review was written voluntarily and is entirely my own, unbiased, opinion.
Not bad. Good world building. I found some of the long place names and titles confusing (not to mention the unlauts). Kind of a cross between Discworld and Redwall. A good intro to read to decide if you want to delve into the series.
Short story but it would be great for middle age to adult, The characters are human and animal who share conversions with each. A very stubborn princess, Eloise Hydra Gumball III no less, had a friend Jerome Abernathees de Chipmunk, her favorite buddy to keep her from getting bored on the rare times she is not "in training" and restricted to the palace. Eloise is being hampered by her teaching on "How to be a Princess" lessons from her mother. After a boring week of lessons, Jerome helps her play hooky and go to a fair in a nearby village. Suddenly she is kidnapped by the Wombanditos and held for ransom. She must escape somehow, her punishment and the trouble that follows disobeying rules can be quite a multitude of answers. The author's the play of words involves a very amusing study of language, an interesting environment with the dignity of proper names by his actors. I laughed through the whole story and read it again.
This is a story about a teenage princess and her friend, chipmunk who ditches her responsibilities for one day to go see a fall festival with all the leave colors that that entails. On the way back, she is abducted by a gang named Wombanditos. The author spins a fantasy story where animals speak, words are repeated not once but three times, which is annoying specially at the beginning when they are used one after the other to describe all the player moves in a hockey sacking game. The creative aspect is worth mentioning, the hillarity about the way the thought gang conducts itself is laughable and the lesson that the queen teaches her daughter is most appropriate and actual. 4 Stars. Just out of curiosity, I would read the sequel.
This was quite a fun short story that managed to wring character out of every moment and take me into a world full of strange customs and cultures without feeling obtuse. It’s obviously aimed at a younger audience but the author uses the premise of a world where animals and human coexist as equals to make some very real (and I would add cleverly delivered) points about our own. It had me smiling for a lot of my time reading - especially in one scene, you’ll know it when you read it - and is well worth the short amount of time it asks of the reader. I am very much looking forward to the continuation of the series and have put in a preorder for the next book already.
What an enchanting read as a way of introducing us to the characters of the sequel books. This book is one which allows you to escape the world we live in and immerse yourself in world where everything and everyone is so different from what we are used to, yet the characters have a realism to them that allows you to take them to your heart and want to protect them. I can’t wait to get on with the following books now.
So I conclude my journey with The Western Lands and All That Really Matters series with its prequel, The Wombanditos. Boy, what a journey it was!
In the Wombanditos, Princess Eloise was just starting to feel her way around as the newly minted heir of the queendom. Her mother the queen had made sure that her days are always full with appointments.
One day, her bff from childhood, Jerome had managed to persuade Eloise to sneak away and enjoy themselves at the Waft! An Autumnal Festival. Jerome had managed to secure a ride with the radish mongers from Lower Glenth to Moondale, where the festival was.
They went, they had fun, and they had a hard time trying to secure a ride back to the castle in time for dinner. Because everyone were staying back for the night's festival dance. While Eloise was gathering brunchberries she encountered another thrill in their adventure - The Wombanditos, the fiercest gang with bad eyesight in the realms, heeyah!
Eloise woke up to herself gagged and bound in the darkness of the wombats burrow. And she found herself praying for Jerome to somehow not panic and are able to find and rescue her.
The Wombanditos was short but fun. I am like, oh, this was how Lorch entered the tale, eh, Jerome was really silver-tongued and witty instead of being annoying (well, can't blame him, he was kept in a sack and hauled like a kitchen produce by a crazy jester) and I love how Eloise was twinning with Jerome during their stunt with the wombanditos. And the wombanditos - what's not to love about them. They're hooligans but pure. Yup. It was genius of Andrew Einspruch to create them that way. And RoyLee, you remained my favorite in all the series!
In this story, El and and her buddy Jerome play hooky from the palace to go leaf peeping at a fall festival a few towns over, only she gets kidnapped by a fierce band of wombats. Jerome talks circles around them, and El gives them a new name. How and why is the funny bit. Then they return to the castle a day later than they had planned to face her very upset mother, the queen.
This is a backstory to book 2 or 3 in the series. It's very fun, like everything in this series.
I LOVED this story! It was fun, quirky, engaging, and I can't wait to read more. There were so many good bits that just made me laugh but the best was Jerome and Eloise getting the Wombanditos to pay them (Jerome and Eloise) 10 coins to let her go after they'd kidnapped her.
I love this book even though its a short story but still it was fun and entertaining to read. I love all the characters and I'm craving to read more of their adventures.
The Wombanditos is a prequel to The Western Lands and All that Really Matters series by Andrew Einspruch. Written in his uniquely humorous style, this story centers around young Princess Eloise Hydra Gumball III and her lifelong friend Jerome de Chimpmunk as they decide to sneak away from the responsibilities that consume the princess's time. It should be no problem. Hitch a ride to an autumnal festival, enjoy a little fun, catch a ride home, and arrive before dinner. The queen will never miss her. Right? Wrong. Things don’t go according to plan.
For fans of The Purple Haze series, this book contains characters you’ve learned to love for their quirkiness and adventures. There’s the Princess, and Jerome, the guard Lorch Lacksneck, and as you may have guessed by the title of the book, the wombat gang known as the Wombanditos. This is the story of how the princess and the wombats came to know each other in the first place—when they kidnapped her for ransom. Not only does she not get home for dinner, but instead, she finds herself in a burrow underground along with her OCD habits screaming at her.
Can Jerome find and rescue her? Well, if you’ve read the first three books, The Purple Haze, The The Star of Whatever, and The Lightbearer, you already know the answer to that question. This is the story of how the clever chipmunk comes to the aid of his best friend and all the repercussions that follow. It’s an easy read filled with adventure that will make you smile.
I recommend this standalone prequel to the humorous fantasy series to people who enjoy clean fantasy, talking animals, plenty of humor, and loads of adventure and snappy dialogue. I recommend it to all the fans of the series, and above all, I recommend it for people who need a respite from the seriousness of real life, a little time to enjoy, laugh, and lose yourself. This book will do the trick. The only complaint I have is that it was too short, but that might be because I’m waiting for book four of the series to come out.
I received this book as a free review copy from either the publisher, a publicist, or the author and have not been compensated for reviewing or recommending it. I give it five stars.
This book actually made me laugh out loud. I can't believe that Andrew Einspruch managed to make me so invested in this book that I laughed out loud in only 60 pages. How did he do that?? I'm truly impressed.
The Wombanditos follows princess Eloise while she sneaks away from the castle to spend a day at WAFT! An Autumnal Festival, together with her friend Jerome (who is a chipmunk). But, as expected, it goes horribly wrong and Eloise Hydra Gumball III is kidnapped by a group of wombat bandits called The Wombanditos. How will she get out of this?
This short book is way too witty for its own good. It even contains a horse betting on racing humans! I love how there's no difference between humans and animals in The Wombanditos (I even doubted if some characters were animals or humans). It's a completely different world and it's amazing.
If you're ever feeling down, this book will cheer you up. If you're feeling good, this book will even make you feel better. Just read it whenever you want to. It will only take up an hour of your time and it's completely worth it.
Growing up in a kingdom of sentient beings of multiple species is a tall order when you are expected to rule it someday. Especially when you have a twin sister who can't be bothered. So when your BFF suggests a little road trip to a fall festival it's very tempting. But nobody expects the Wombanditos!
Jerome de Chipmunk's fast talking is all that allows Princess Eloise to avoid a very uncomfortable kidnap incident. It's a wonderful introduction to the Western Lands and all that Really Matters.
I am so grateful to have received this book from the author Andrew Einspurch! This is yet another short standalone prequel to The Western Lands And All That Really Matters series! Let’s dive in to know more!
Genre: Fantasy, YA Fiction, Standalone
Plot: Princess Eloise Hydra Gumball III quickly realized that being a Princess and Future Ruler and Heir to the Western Lands and All that Really Matters is not so easy. When her official duties start mounting, her friend suggests they sneak away to visit autumnal festival.
Hitchhiking to the festival and coming back by the dinner time – a smooth and simple affair. Will it be one? What if the return home involves a slight detour? What if it involves a kidnapping? Can the Princess and her friend return home safely?
Review: Yet another refreshing book from the author, this book was sweet and fun. In a light-hearted manner the author shows how much life has changed for Princess Eloise and the wistful yearning for a break. The story is fast paced yet gives attention to all the finer details. The entire kidnapping sequence was a treat to read.
The friendly banter between Princess Eloise and her friend is heart-warming. There are limited characters, but they are enough to create impact. This book not only makes you laugh and smile, it also gives something deep to think about.
The ending reminded me of the other prequel The Thorning Ceremony and I couldn’t help smiling. There are books that stay with you. This book definitely will! The two prequels and the series The Western Lands and All That Really Matters have been total delight to read!
I definitely recommend reading this book! Don’t forget to grab The Purple Haze – Book 1 in The Western Lands and All That Really Matters series!
I can’t wait to read to further books from the author!
Opinions: The Wombanditos was unique, eccentric, and exciting. With only these 70 pages, I'm captivated and intend to continue reading the series. The only way I can think to describe this book and its features is 'unique.' Einspruch's style: unique. Plots and themes: unique. I'm happy to say The Wombanditos fits into the Young Adult genre yet satisfies the need for a change. There is no formula, no stereotypical characters, no cliche and overused themes. Although it was a shock to start reading, I was very happy with this prequel.
My Favourite Thing: The creativity, obviously! I felt like The Wombanditos was a mixture of dozens of odd writing prompts, such as: "Include a talking platypus," and, "Name the characters after everyday objects." I've never read a book with this many anomalous ideas; I'm pleased and impressed with how well it worked.
My Least Favourite Thing: I understand that The Wombanditos was a prequel, but I would've appreciated a bit more character descriptions. There isn't much evidence to explain who these people are, meaning it was a bit difficult to jump right into the story. The feeling of uncertainty towards the characters fades once the conflict rises, but because this prequel is so short, it needed to happen faster.
Per FTC regulations, please know that I received this title for free for review from the original author, the publisher, publicist, or a third party. I am honest in my reviews, meaning the fact I received the book for free does not alter the rating I give it.
The Wombanditos is a very amusing short prequel to what promises great entertainment. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading the series it introduces. I recommend it and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this ebook from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
What Would a Chipmunk Know? Turns out, quite a lot. Andrew Einspruch's wacky sense of humour romps through this little taster for his new series "The Western Lands and All that Matters". If this story is a guide to coming adventures for the Princess Eloise and her jaunty chipmunk companion, then I, for one, am tapping my foot in expectation. It is fun to have a new imagined world to jump into and Einspruch appears to have concocted a zinger.
I like to read prequels after I read a series. However, about halfway through the third book, these guys are mentioned! So I quickly took a break from that one to read this. And it was lovely. One of my favorite things about Einspruch's work is just the fully-realized world. There's an autumn festival! And I loved being there with Eloise and Jerome to experience it. Not to mention the silliness and wit that Einspruch always has :)
Comical and imaginative. The writing is clever and easy to read, with a good amount of humour. It’s clear a lot of effort went into coming up with an original world that feels a little like a Disney film got out of hand. Having a princess with OCD also makes for a fascinating protagonist. Only criticism is this isn’t much of the actual Wombanditos in it.
A great prequal to the Western Lands and All That Really Matters series, this novelette introduces young readers to the characters and worlds of these series. Reminds me of a younger readers discworld by Terry Pratchett
A charming, captivating little story that is both entirely self-contained and leaves the reader wanting to delve further into this world. I look forward to reading the rest of the series
