The Coming Storm

Berlin/Paris 1937—The Ritter family prepares for the Coming Storm

The Ritter family is fractured. Maureen, Michael, and his new wife, Monika, are in exile in the city of Paris. Seamus, Lisa, and the other children remain in Berlin, where fifteen-year-old Fiona is falling further under the spell of Nazi propaganda. Under constant pressure to inform on her parents and impress her peers, she will soon be faced with a stark choice on which direction her life is going to take.
Business is booming in the factory. The Nazi regime’s insatiable appetite for armaments has created a new gold rush in Germany, and Seamus has become a member of Germany’s new elite class of munitions kings. But unlike the other fat cats he fraternizes with, Seamus has a dual mission—to report back to his contact in the US embassy on the Nazi weapons build-up and to find a way to extricate his Jewish workers from a country growing more perilous for them by the day.
Maureen’s work against the Nazis continues in Paris. And together with another resistance fighter, she hatches a scheme that could topple Hitler and his Nazi government forever. When Lisa recruits a face from her past to aid their plan, suddenly, it appears they might succeed. But Paris isn’t as safe as it seems, and when the Gestapo strike, Seamus, Michael, and Monika will have to join forces in a race against time to save not only Maureen’s life but the very future of Germany.

Eoin Dempsey was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1977. He grew up in the beautiful Dublin suburb of Dalkey, where he and his friends would jump into the icy waters of the Irish Sea (during summertime) to prove their manliness. Eoin had a fantastic time attending Blackrock College, where he played rugby (poorly) and did his best to coast his way through. Eoin’s first ambition was to play rugby for Ireland. Due to a lack of talent, he soon abandoned that goal for the more reasoned path of the rock star. He played in bands through his teens and well into his twenties before harsh reality came calling, and his dreams of being the next Keith Moon faded.

Eoin made the ill-reasoned decision to study business in university and was accepted into University College Dublin to study Commerce in 1995. While Eoin did attend college, studying wasn’t his priority there.

He met his beautiful wife, Jill, while traveling to the USA in 1997, though it would be several years before he managed to break her down and they got together as a couple. It was during Eoin’s second stint in the USA, which he spent with his brother in New York City, that he decided to start writing a novel, for the express purpose of impressing women. This effort was met with mixed success. Eoin finished his first novel a year later. The over hundred and fifty rejections he received from publishers didn’t discourage him. He pinned them to his wall. After spending a year in Australia, where he was fired from many jobs, including picking red and green peppers and toiling for scallops miles out to sea on a fishing trawler, he returned home and decided to write again. Another novel followed while he phoned it in at a number of jobs in financial services in Dublin.

By this time Eoin had managed to convince Jill, the girl he’d met in the USA years before to move over to Dublin. She did so in 2004. It was the best negotiation he ever undertook. They were married in 2007. Jill’s more brilliant negotiating skills led Eoin to move to her hometown of Philadelphia in 2008, just in time for the economy to collapse. The plan to live with her parents for a few weeks turned into eighteen months, as Eoin struggled to retain employment in a fractured economy. It was during this time that he wrote FINDING REBECCA, which would go on to be his first published novel and be translated into fourteen different languages.

Eoin and Jill have three beautiful sons, Robbie, who was born in 2015, Sam, born in 2017, and Jack who came in 2019. Eoin enjoys playing with them and marveling at how much more talented they are at the sports that he loves, particularly golf.

This historical fiction divulges that the storm is definitely coming! It will fracture a man, splinter his family, and rip open the world! Bestselling author, Eoin Dempsey, places his readers within the journey of the lives of an appealing, loving family prior to WW2.
The Coming Storm untangles the differences of Paris and Berlin during the late 1930’s, as characters and events coincide with the gripping contrasts of good and evil.
The author undercoats his novel with a bit of magic that shifts readers to another time and place. It’s a balance of researched historical events and well-crafted, imagined narrative. One minute you are bathed in the aroma of a freshly baked croissant, taking a boat ride along the Seine in Paris, in the distance, streets are lined with flowers. The next minute, you’re overcome by the whiz of bullets, the echoes from heavy boots of the Gestapo, the silence of people reading codes, and the strangers who are catching whispered secrets.
Dempsey’s characters are evocative and consequential, and together they push the plot onward. Readers will recall these characters from past books in this series. Now, In this novel, they become even more defined and dimensional individuals. Sculpted with dialogue to yield voices that are alive with depth and personality, we see how characters’ distinct motivations and aspirations overlap, stepping towards each subplot’s fruition. Family dynamics and the politics of the time, demonstrate moral dilemmas and physical conflict. There is a questioning of survival which ensues scenes of fast paced suspense!
The ending hits us too quickly, and the reader is left thinking….it’s really just the beginning!

In Book 5 of the Lion's Den series author Dempsey continues the story of the Ritter family in Germany. It is a gripping, heartfelt portrayal of a somewhat fractured family living in increasingly treacherous times as Hitler manages to convince prepare the country for war. Charismatic, persuasive, and diabolically ambitious, Hitler convinces more and more of the country's population to adopt his Nazi beliefs and remain faithful to his cause. Dempsey's treatment of the German citizens is noteworthy for its balanced view of their understanding and acceptance of the direction their government is taking; not everyone is on board, and many are just unaware of the consequences of Hitler's ambition. The family can be seen as a microcosm of the German population, with sympathizers and those opposed to the inevitably tragic carrying out of the leader's 'ideals.'

The family dynamics are relatable; we empathize with the diverse personalities and the decisions they must make to survive. The author also gives us insights into the clever psychological machinations of the regime as they succeed in convincing so many to behave so inhumanely.

The book is an engrossing, emotional read, highly recommended

I liked the previous installments better than this one, which seemed to be less about the characters and more about movie-like action scenes. But I still enjoyed learning what happened next to the characters I've come to care about so much, and I'm looking forward to starting the next and last one.

"The Coming Storm" is book five in the "Lion's Den Series."

It is May 1937 in Paris. Michael and his wife, Monika Ritter are living in exile there. The situation in Germany is now worsening due to the Nazis hold on the government and the restrictions on civil liberties. The Jews are in grave danger; but most are unbeknownst to them.

While living in Paris, Maureen has been active with the resistance.

Seamus Ritter has a plan to help his employees at the Munitions factory in Berlin to relocate to Switzerland.

Mr. Dempsey's Lion's Den Series always provide suspense and drama with a certain accuracy of what life was like under the Nazi Regime.

I am totally hooked on Eoin Dempsey’s The Lion’s Den series! It is a vivid portrayal of the buildup to WWII as experienced through the American Ritter family living in Berlin. Seamus is the widowed father of 3. Products of the Great Depression, the family of 4 move from New Jersey to Berlin at the invitation of Seamus’s uncle who wants Seamus to learn his business.

The Coming Storm, book 5 in the series, continues with a page turning, keep-me-awake-later-than-I-want experience. Each of the 3 Ritter siblings have opinions, insights, activities, and network of friends which vary from each other as well as their father (is that a surprise?). The father’s marriage to a German, who had one Jewish parent, adds immensely to the complications and tensions. Seamus inherits the factory along with his Nazi-sympathizer, female cousin and operates it profitably, producing military equipment and supplies for a war which hasn’t started AND many Germans don’t see coming. The German culture did not readily accept females as leaders of business. So, Seamus was more accepted in the German leadership circles than his cousin, the Nazi sympathizer!

The German people are diverse in their views and insights which is largely misrepresented by Hitler. Evil as he was, he was insightful and creative, building a larger and larger following. His skill in inciting the youth to follow his ideals is most unsettling and is seen firsthand and personal through the Ritters in the book.

Much insight, nail biting and stomach churning occurs in this read. I believe the historical scenario is accurate and believable as seen through the fictional Ritters. I also cannot help but to see Vladimir Putin’s success (so far!) in leading the Russians to attempt to conquer other countries and expand his empire.

I cannot wait for the next book in this series. We know the painful experiences and failure outcome for Hitler and the Nazis. I want the experience through the Ritter family.

This is Book 5 of a saga of the Ritter family, whose father's origins were in Germany.
The first book starts out in Newark, NJ during the great depression,
and the family after many trials and tribulations moves to Berlin, Germany in 1932. The family goes from rags to wealth when they move to Germany.

Then the family ends up in a very different environment with the rise of Hitler and continues the story thru 1936 Olympics. You feel like they are sitting in your home relating their life story. In this 5th book the family gets torn apart due to Hitler’s rising power. They have to make life altering decisions and the saga continues.

I am looking forward to their continuing history, as with this book and the prior ones you feel like you are connected to the characters and hope all goes well for them.

This is so accurate in its details and is a terrific historical novel. Hopefully one day a film company will make this series into either a miniseries or a full-length film, but the author has more to pen.

The author has written other books which are also terrific, but this series is A++++.

The Coming Storm, Book 5 in Eoin Dempsey’s The Lion’s Den Series is terrific. This book has Seamus Ritter continuing his munitions factory and worrying about his workers as the Nazis continue to crackdown on the Jewish population in Berlin. Maureen and Michael Ritter and Michael’s wife, Monica, are now living in Paris and get involved in resistance activities. Although warned that many active SS and Gestapo pose as civilians saying they escaped from one of the concentration camps, Maureen gets fooled. One convinces her that he wants to get involved in the resistance and she takes him to one of the secret meetings. The SS show up at the meeting, killing two and capturing three, including Maureen. Her brother contacts their father who launches a raid on the chateau serving as the SS headquarters. It is an exciting book. There is one more book in this series due out in January.

I received an ARC of the book but the opinion is entirely my own. Luckily the author told me a dog dies in the book and in which chapter so I could skip that section. Because I normally stop reading books where a dog is killed and the author knows this, I am basing this review on the book as part of the series. This is the continuation of Seamus and his family. His daughter Fiona has been brainwashed and is a hazard to the family (he should have shipped her back to US). Maureen, Michael and his wife Monica now live in Paris, but they are not out of danger there. The series really explains how Hitler got so much power. A storm is definitely coming! I am really looking forward to the next book and the conclusion to the series.

This is 1939 and the Ritter family is beginning to feel the influence of the Nazism in both Germany and France. This book explores the attempts made by people who were forming resistance groups. People who were against the Nazis were trying everything with in the little power they had to fight back or sabotage the presence of the Germans. The government officials of Europe were either attempting appeasement or denial, neither of which were working. The Ritter family is hardly able to stay together, with Maureen, Michael and Monkia, Lisa and Hannah in France, Fiona and Concor still in Germany, Seamus is doing all he can to keep his family from splintering. But, his work is not finished because he made a promise to save his Jewish workers. Can’t wait for Book #6!

What a brillant series this is. Another great story being told and this one takes you right into the heart of Nazi Germany and all that they portrayed in their hate if someone did not meet their standards
The characters have developed well and now ZI am waiting for Fiona to realise her mistake in believing what she has been brainwashed into believing.
On another note this could be made into a great Tv series just for the story it is that good. Now for the final book in 2023!

What I liked about The Coming Storm:
Eoin Dempsey's The Coming Storm captivated me from start to finish. Set in 1937 Berlin and Paris, Dempsey's exceptional talent for blending historical events with a compelling story makes this novel a gripping read. His portrayal of how German citizens reacted to Hitler's rise offers a fresh perspective on a well-known historical period. I am particularly drawn to each member of the Ritter family; they are well-developed and relatable, making it easy to become invested in their stories. Dempsey's skill in crafting multiple perspectives kept me engaged, and his vivid depiction of Berlin and Paris truly brought the tense atmosphere of pre-war Germany to life.

What I disliked about The Coming Storm:
While I enjoyed The Coming Storm, I didn't find it as suspenseful as The Grand Illusion. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good read, but it didn't have me on the edge of my seat, eagerly needing to know what happens next. Even with its intriguing ending, it lacked the same level of intensity that I loved in The Grand Illusion.

What I think would have made The Coming Storm better:
Dempsey's The Coming Storm swept me off my feet but left me wanting more. I've become so invested in each character that it's bittersweet knowing that the series is ending. While I enjoyed their journeys, I also found myself wanting and needing more. The story was engaging, but I craved more suspense to keep me on the edge of my seat. It's a good read, no doubt, but I couldn't help feeling it had untapped potential to be truly great.

Would I recommend The Coming Storm by Eoin Dempsey:
As always, I strongly encourage everyone to read any book by Eoin Dempsey but especially The Lion's Den series. These novels aren't just riveting historical fiction; they're eye-openers that draw surprising parallels to today's political landscape. Dempsey's extensive knowledge brings the past to life, revealing the hidden horrors of a deceitful regime. His storytelling is a masterclass in blending entertainment with education. For anyone who craves gripping historical fiction that resonates with our times, Dempsey's works are absolute must-reads.

****

Set in 1937, in Berlin and Paris, this story follows the divided Ritter family. In Paris, Maureen, Michael, and Monika work against the Nazi regime. In Berlin, Seamus manages a booming munitions factory while secretly aiding Jewish workers and reporting to the US embassy. Their daughter Fiona faces pressure to embrace Nazi ideology. Maureen devises a plan to overthrow Hitler, enlisting unexpected help. However, as the Gestapo closes in, the family must reunite to save Maureen and potentially change Germany's future.

I have been enjoying all the books in Eoin Dempsey’s THE LION’S DEN series, set in 1930’s Berlin. This series chronicles the Ritter family, a large Irish-German-American family that starts off in Ohio, but moves to Berlin in the early 1930’s so that Seamus, who has had misfortune during the Great Depression, can take over his uncle’s factory. THE COMING STORM is book five and by now we’re in 1937. Maureen and Michael Ritter are in Paris after the events of the last book. Fiona, the teenage daughter of Seamus continues to fall further under the influence of the Hitler youth for girls. Seamus is struggling to come up with a plan to help his Jewish workers get out of Berlin with their assets despite Nazi laws stripping them of property if they try to leave Germany. This installment of the series had lots of good drama at the start and finished with a bang! Can’t wait to read book six and the conclusion. 5/5 stars.

I really rate Eoin Dempsey and I enjoyed the first 2 books in this series and especially previous books but I'm finding the ease with which the family characters manage to have one one hand a high status within German officialdom whilst becoming agents for the west or taking on the Nazi's single handedly and getting away scot free beyond belief. The Nazi's or peripheral characters get killed or suffer life changing injuries whilst the family get missed or heal remarkably quickly to return to fool the Germans once again. I won't give examples as they would be spoilers bit it's constant. It's all too convenient. I will read the last one as I'm involved in this soap opera but Eoin your better than this

Wonderful narration from Joff Manning, he brings out the tensions and emotions of the time and family.

This book show us the portrayal of the build up to WWII as experienced through the American Ritter family living in Berlin.
Seamus is continuing his works at munitions factory. The Nazis party is cracking down on the Jewish population in Berlin. Maureen and Michael Ritter and Michael’s wife, Monica, are living in Paris. This is the 5th book In this series and it was as riveting as the other 4. It is the story of an American family who has been living in Berlin as the Nazis gain power. The family is fractured with some supporting Hitler while others detest him. The choices they make will have lasting impact and the family will struggle to stay I tact as the war ahead looms. Can’t wait for the final book in the series due our in 2023!

Waiting for Book 6

This installment was riveting. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait *three months* for the next book! Speaking of waiting for the next book, there are so many players in the story that by the time this book came out, I had forgotten who everyone was. It’s a little frustrating trying to figure out who they all are and what their roles are and it takes away from the story. Perhaps it would help if there could be an index describing each character?

I am enjoying this book series soooo much! I love the author’s style and one of the best things I can say about him is that he recounts and summarizes what happened in prior books in the series. Much appreciated! I’ve stopped reading book series because the author expected everyone to have photographic memories.
I have come to feel like I know this family in these books and am sorry to see the series end with the next book. Highly recommended!

All kinds of stuff hits the fan

As the furor gains power the people lose theirs and what is being done is inhuman. The patience of the furor to indoctrinate the young people to believe his actions were deserved is a horribly scary realization.

To see the different views of the different members of the same family is also very true opening in my understanding of how Hitler was able to achieve all he did.

Looking forward to the last installment book in this series.

The continuing story of the Ritter family is so suspenseful. The family is struggling to stay together but it’s not possible with all that is happening in Nazi Germany. The lessons learned in this series about how easy it was for Hitler to take over Europe should not be forgotten.
