In Safe All Along, Katie offers reflections and stories from around the world and from her own kitchen table about her personal journey toward living from a place of surrendered trust. Every chapter leads us deep into Scripture as we learn what it looks like to break free from anxiety and take hold of peace.

How can we live with joy and confidence even when we’re pulled into the rapids of life?

My personal Rating- Four Stars

Non-fiction books have always been hard for me to review—especially with ones like “Safe All Along” which hit so many cords in myself as I read it. There were so many parts I related to and honestly can’t put into words how I felt. Hence why non-fiction books are hard to review. I’d love to leave it just as “It was great. Related to about 80% of what the author was saying. Easy 4 stars.” But I suppose I ought to write a little bit more than that.

I think my only real negative is that when most of the Scriptures are mentioned or quoted, the actual reference is marked as a footnote and they are all listed in the very back of the book. I would have preferred to have them right then and there within the actual Scripture and what Katie was sharing, personally.

I’m touched by this book and heartened in a lot of ways, thanks to the author sharing her personal thoughts and struggles—but yet always pointing back to Christ and your relationship with Him. I love that and really enjoyed this book.

Safe All Along was such a beautiful journey of discovering, as the author did, how God covers our uncertainties with His peace, that He is our strength when we’re weak, and that life can still be beautiful even when it’s a far cry from how we hoped the pages of our stories would unfold. There were so many touching moments, heartfelt truths that my heart really needed, and relatable themes. I highlighted so many quotes, and I’d love nothing more than to share all my favorites in my review, but I don’t want to spoil these beautiful nuggets of truth for you if you haven’t read this book yet. So I’ll share one of my top favorites:

“God is who He says He is, and when we cannot hold on any longer, He will not let go. He will carry us.”

What a reminder 🥺🤍

Although Safe All Along wasn’t my favorite of the author’s books, I still loved this book and would highly recommend it!

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an eARC of Safe All Along. A positive review was not required, only my honest opinion. All thoughts are expressly my own.

I loved Katie’s other two books, and this one didn’t disappoint. This book was like a breath of fresh air & the warm hug of a friend. 💛

It’s real. It’s authentic. Each page had me thinking, “She gets it. She understands. I’m not the only one. I’m not alone.” It truly comes from the heart of a fellow sister in the trenches sharing words of encouragement, truth, and hope. Every chapter serves as a loving reminder that Jesus is with us, that our stories aren’t over, and that there is beauty to be found even in the midst of heartache & uncertainty.

I appreciate the acknowledged difference between worry vs. real anxiety/mental health issues and shares her struggles with both. She reiterates that telling people to “enough faith” isn’t the answer—there should be no shame in needing to take medication or receiving therapy.

So much of this book helped challenge the mentality I’ve picked up of being a “good Christian.” God wants to meet us in our grief, sorrow, and anxiety. He isn’t looking for us to clean our feelings up before coming to Him. We can be honest with Him because He already knows our hearts and won’t turn us away.

Another highlight was the chapter on productivity & hustle culture being the antithesis of rest, and how our addiction to being “needed” can come to define who we are, making us feel we need to earn Gods favour instead of knowing we are beloved for who we are in Jesus—not because of what we do. Plus, how it is possible that the business of busyness can become our idol of control. These things and more definitely hit hard.

As I finished with tears in my eyes, this book was exactly what my heart & my faith needed. I feel certain this will be a top read of 2023, and I cannot wait to purchase a physical copy to annotate with my countless notes & highlights!!

“God is who He says He is, and when we cannot hold on any longer, He will not let go. He will carry us.”

Katie knows her bible and weaves it beautifully into this book. Its clear that her relationship with God isn’t a “to do”; instead, it revolves around “it’s done,” and the all encompassing peace that comes from that.

She lives her faith like I want to. This book is my favorite of hers so far - but all three have been 5 ⭐️ reads for me (👀 excited for book 4 coming soon!)

This book is especially helpful for anyone dealing with general anxiety. It was a comfort to pick this book up every night and offered so much practical encouragement.

A couple things to note - she very openly talks about her medication/therapist. I LOVED the fact that she was so open about this and supported using meds/therapy, if needed. This book doesn’t deal with trauma or extreme hardship. But it’s great for encouragement in the daily anxiety’s of life.

A solid 5 star read that I highly recommend!

Thank you to NetGalley & Katie Davis for the ARC of this incredible book!

Rounding up from 4.5⭐️. This is such a sweet little book, full of reminders that every believer needs to live in light of God’s promises and grace.

Docked half a star because it felt just a bit wordy/repetitive at times, but I highly recommend it!

Any book by Katie Davis Majors is worth the time to read. I’ve read all of her books over the years, and enjoy her lyrical style and kind tone.

Safe All Along is both thoughtful and thought-provoking, with a lot of good reminders. I related quite a bit with her struggles with anxiety and moving back to the States, and it just felt good to hear someone else share from that perspective.

It did feel basic and vague at times. The theology leaned too far into “I’m the worst sinner there is,” with quite a bit of sin-leveling and spiritual bypassing, especially in the chapters on forgiveness, reconciliation, and foot washing.

Overall, I did find this book to be encouraging, inspiring, and comforting.

Safe All Along: Trading Our Fears And Anxieties for God's Unshakable Peace by Katie Davis Majors

In Safe All Along, Katie offers reflections and stories from around the world and from her own kitchen table about her personal journey toward living from a place of surrendered trust. The chapter leads us deep into Scripture as we learn what it looks like to break free from anxiety and take hold of peace.
Rich in biblical explorations of lament and praise, forgiveness and hope, service and surrender, Safe All Along asks: What practical choices can we make to experience the peace Jesus promised amid disappointment and uncertainty? How can we live with joy and confidence even when we're pulled into the rapids of life?
Our God has promised us a peace that transcends all understanding. And we can accept His promise, trusting that in Him we are safe all along.

"Surely this is the picture of perfect peace, perfect rest, perfect certainty: God's children basking in the love of the Creator and Father, walking in unhindered relationship with Him, not wondering for a second if their need will be provided for."

"Fear always magnifies the enemy and diminishes God."

"Lord, we confess that we are anxious about many things, and we don't want to be. We confess that we so often want to take control of our lives and our circumstances, even though You have a better plan. We believe that You promise us peace and that You give it to us. We believe that You love us enough to orchestrate Your very best on our behalf, even when we cannot see it. Help us receive this promise and live out of it day by day, moment by moment. We trust You. Amen."

"God knows our words before they form on our tongues; He knows our thoughts, our feelings, our sins, our hearts. There is no friend closer than this."

"Father God, You call us to be people of praise, and You give us Your love, Your grace, and Your mercy to turn our hearts to worship You. Give us thankful hearts no matter the circumstance. Remind us that, in Jesus, there is always something to be grateful for. You have done great things for us; let us be filled with joy in Your presence. Even on the most difficult of days, God give us hearts, minds, and voices to sing Your praise and testify of Your goodness. Amen."

"The ministry of reconciliation that Paul urges the Corinthians toward calls us to not only to be in right relationship with God and others but also to be messengers of God's Gospel. And we cannot do this with just our words, we have to live it out in service to those around us. As we intentionally place our confidence in the One who is unshakable, we can begin to offer unshakable peace to the hurtling and fearful people we encounter each day, living as vessels of God's peace in our chaotic times."

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, neither anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8: 38-39

Loved this! I’ve followed Katie’s writing since 2007 when she moved to Uganda - her journey of faithful obedience has spurred me on in my own faith for years. This book in this season of her life - battling for peace in the unknown of this world - was encouraging to me! Great spiritual truth and practical tools to help engage our hearts and minds to trust God who holds our future secure.

I always have to preface reviews of religious books with a caveat: I am not the audience for this. I don't share a background or a religion with Majors, and I've read her books because she's living an interesting life rather than because of the religious content. If you are looking for a walk-with-Jesus book, then: this book might be right for you, but this review might not be. Carry on.

Now that that's out of the way... It's been interesting to see Majors' style shift through her books, from Kisses from Katie (2011; largely memoir) to Daring to Hope (2017; so abstractly religious that I struggled to make it through) and now to Safe All Along (more about Christianity—and God's path—than about personal story, but with some cautious nuggets thrown in). I suspect that some of this shift is because Majors got a fair amount of backlash when her story went public; largely, I think, strangers on the Internet thinking she was talking big talk but wondering where she'd be in a year. (She briefly mentions the backlash in Safe All Along but doesn't go into details, and I might be misremembering.) I imagine that it was, rightly, disconcerting, and I think (rightly or wrongly!) that this may have influenced her shift from personal story into something that is in some ways more reserved—sharing feelings openly but holding family details close to the chest.

I'll always prefer memoir with specifics and details and story, but—above that—I also stand 100% behind parents opting not to put their kids' names and stories out for public consumption when those stories are their kids' to tell or not tell. Majors walks a pretty careful line in Safe All Along, bringing in anecdotes sparingly, preserving her family's privacy/anonymity and choosing stories to fit in her themes of 'safe all along' and 'God's plan'. I skimmed some of the more heavily Bible bits (again...I'm not the right audience here, and I know it), but she's very good at drawing those connections and analogies, and there was just enough story here that the book worked better for me than Daring to Hope did. I'd love it if one day one of Majors's kids does choose to write about their upbringing, which must have been quite a unique and specific experience, but in the meantime it feels like she's finding some balance in terms of what she's comfortable sharing, and how.

So good & read at the perfect time! I will be rereading this.

“True peace, Jesus’s peace, transcends all circumstances because it is found in Him and He remains unchanged”

“What could pull us apart more than stuffing down our sadness and grief and pretending to be fine when we are not? We already know that God sees our thoughts and knows our hearts, so pretending to feel or think anything other than our honest emotions only pulls us apart and further separates us from him.”

“Remembering God’s past faithfulness is an act of trust and an act of worship. As we remember all the ways He has loved us, cared for us, and provided for us in the past, we see once again that we can trust him with our futures, no matter how uncertain they seem”

“In my pride, I pretend that I am above grief or sadness. I bury it. But I am learning that when I refuse to lament, I am missing an opportunity to worship.”

I’ve loved reading the words from Katie Davis-Majors since I read her first book “Kisses from Katie”. She writes with such sincerity and joy. She is a lover of Jesus & by reading her words you can tell she is someone who sits at His feet often.

This book was beautifully written. It’s applicable for any season you are in, but especially a season of feeling mundane, anxious, stuck or just needing some wisdom from a sister in Christ. The chapters are very practical and encouraging. It’s laced with scripture throughout and many Bible stories to help illustrate what she is trying to share.

Safe all Along, was a book I’ll probably read again & will recommend it to any friend that needs to just feel joyful again.

“The Bible and the entire universe begin with God’s life-giving peace. He comes near to chaos and disorder and speaks light into the dark, peace and order into a chaotic void, and life into His creation. He reverses disorder and brings about the whole world, weaving ultimate tranquility and beauty into every aspect of its perfection.”

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you WaterBrook Multnomah, Katie Davis- Majors and Netgally for this book.

In her book, Safe All Along, bestselling author Katie Davis Majors walks her readers through the struggles of overcoming anxiety so that they can realize that she did that we have been safe all along. She begins the book by describing a story of swimming in the Nile River with her daughter in a place with fast rapids. When they both got caught in the rapids, Katie thought her daughter would get swept away. When they both came out alright, Katie’s husband took her to a higher vantage point, where she could see that there were several places along the river where her daughter could have swam to safety. This illustration sets up the whole book, encouraging readers to realize that in Christ, we are safe all along. This is hard-earned wisdom for Katie, as she experienced serious anxiety over the last several years between the weight of worrying for her family and loved ones, a global pandemic, and a difficult move from her beloved country of Uganda to the United States. While she has chosen to see a therapist and medication to help with her struggle, Katie has also chosen to process her struggles and anxieties through the lens of Scripture and help her readers do the same. The first half of the book lays the foundation for overcoming the spiritual aspect of anxiety and worry by sharing Scriptures and part of the story of her emotional roller coaster of the last few years. The second half of the book lays out 10 practices based on Scripture that can help readers in their own journey toward finding biblical shalom.

This book is honest, relatable, and full of powerful biblical truth. Katie continues to speak with wisdom beyond her years and a vulnerability that allows readers to find a place in which they relate to her journey. This is a great book that I highly recommend. Get your copy today!

Did not rush through this because it was so lifegiving! But also appreciated its simplicity. RIGHT as I was thinking “I wonder what else she would have to say conceptually about this” her book pivoted to practical ways to engage with the truth we are safe with God. Was ministered to deeply! Many “oh I’m not the only one who thinks like this” moments :’) this might be my favorite of her books so far! 10/10 recommend!

🤍 WHAT I LOVED: The nuggets of godly wisdom and truth found in every chapter. I especially appreciated and was encouraged by Chapters: 1 (The View From Above), 12 (Come As Your Are, Practice 4: Learning to Lament), and 15 (The Better Thing, Practice 7: Creating Space for Rest).

I loved Katie’s heart, which was evident on every page in every sentence that she wrote. Her heart for the Lord, her family, and for people. Her heart for people to know God, His Word, and the peace we have in Jesus Christ.

And I loved the stories that she told. Stories that were relatable, reflective of her life, and that pointed to the goodness of God. Stories that spoke to both my heart and my fears.

Synopsis: “Beholding the face of God is the antidote to our swirling anxiety. Beholding the face of God gives us the courage to confront what is up ahead, even when we don’t know what it is.” Anxiety, fear, worry: these are all words that are often too familiar to us. But what happens when we turn our gaze elsewhere? What happens when we look to God and see who He is and what He’s doing? In her book, Safe All Along. Katie lovingly leads us through her story of looking to God and teaches us to see that He is the constant source for healing our fearful hearts.

Analysis: I first discovered Katie’s story in college when I read Kisses from Katie. It’s still one of my favorite books today, but when Katie writes a new book, I feel like I’ve just grown up with her. I don’t know her personally (though I did meet her a few years ago! Katie, if you read this, remember when you couldn’t talk and signed books in Franklin? Hi again! I’m so grateful to have met you!). But I feel like I’ve watched her grow in her relationship with Christ and feel so blessed that she would share her wisdom with us. Safe All Along met me in a place I didn’t even realize how badly I needed it. There are a lot of scary things going on in this world today, but Katie points our eyes right where they need to be: the face of Jesus. Do yourself a favor, read this book! But if you really want her whole story, read her other two first 😉

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love Katie Davis Major’s story, and so I eagerly picked up her latest book. Good stuff! Encouraging and hopeful, each chapter dives into a different truth about why we can trust God. I admit, I wanted more of Katie’s story or day-to-day analogies. The vagueness with which she described moving back to the States from Uganda (because of COVID? An ill family member?) distracted me due to lack of detail.

After 6 years it was so nice to hear from Katie again. She has a way with words that is very encouraging and makes you feel like you are not alone in whatever you are going through. This book is different from her first two in that it is less about her family and ministry and more about lessons she has learned as a wife, mother of many, and ministry leader. Along the way she has had overwhelming doubts, worries, fears, and anxieties. In other words, she’s human just like the rest of us.
It's easy to look at those we think are spiritually stronger than us and believe that they don’t have problems. Or if they do, they deal with them easily. But Katie shows us that we are all prone to trials and testings and must lean on Jesus as our provider and protector. Although we cannot see what is around the next bend in the road, He has full view. While we do not see the big picture as He does, we can still have peace, knowing all along we are safe in His care. Using scripture as the guide, she shows that peace comes as we practice resting in Him and being still in His presence, even in the midst of our busyness. The second half the of book gives practical ways to form habits that will lead us into and keep us in His perfect peace, no matter what is going on around us.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for peace and security in this unpredictable world. Jesus is the only place to find the comfort and safety you are looking for. And I recommend this book to seasoned Christians, because we can all use a reminder to get our eyes off our circumstances and back onto the only One Who is Peace.

“Peace isn’t a feeling; it’s a promise that finds fulfillment in a Person.”

Everyone struggles with feeling anxious and unsafe, yet for those who are Christians, we have access to a God who provides the ultimate peace and security in Him. Katie’s book provides practical ways to let go of control and stay connected to God when we find ourselves grasping for safety that we can’t find in this life. Using the story of how she and her family uprooted their lives in Uganda and moved to the United States, she shares about how she felt deep anxiety but ultimately, through both counseling and a deeper relationship with God, she found peace in Him. She provides thematic chapters as guides for ways to lean into God’s peace on topics like rest, community, and prayer, using stories from her life and abridged stories from the Bible to illustrate them.

What I really like about Katie’s books are that they feel like a friend is sitting down with you over a cup of coffee to share her experiences. She’s not condescending or overly preachy; she uses her experiences, which are many, to illustrate the wisdom she’s gained from her walk with God. When I read the description for this book, I was interested because this is a relatable topic–I struggle with control and feeling unsafe and anxious in a world that threatens me constantly, and many of the things Katie said I could connect with.

However, what I struggled with in this book was the lack of meat. It’s definitely more of a narrative style book, and a lot of the chapters had little theological or biblical content. She used summarized biblical stories or very short verses taken out of context, which is generally not a good idea, to support her points. Her general points were also very basic. Read your Bible, pray, rest, etc. Some of the points within the chapters were very good, but I felt in general that this book didn’t share anything new. Her stories were what made the book powerful, but the theology and practical sides of the book were lacking. However, if you enjoy more narrative-style books and aren’t looking to go super deep, Katie’s relatable, friendly voice is really a pleasure to read.

I savored this book. I sort of used it alongside my devotion time most days. I would read a chapter or two at a time and soak it in.

I really liked the inserts and prayers. It helps solidify and make the ideas real for your own life.

Katie’s books are like having conversations with a friend over coffee. It’s warm and comforting. She’s sharing lessons learned and lessons lived with no judgement or elitism because she’s also sharing things she’s still learning and going through.

At the end of this book, I’m still hurting. I still have doubts and fears and things I’m wrestling with God about. But the truths Katie shares filled some cracks and soaked into my heart just a little more. What she is saying is not ground-breaking but she says it in a way my heart can receive. I have so many highlights!!!

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own and a favorable review was not required.

I’ve loved Katie’s other books (Kisses from Katie and Daring to Hope). I love her pursuit of following Jesus amidst the hardship, grief, and challenges of being a missionary mom in Uganda. Now, she’s back in the states after building a life and ministry in Uganda, and she shares the anxiety and depression that surfaced from such a big life shift. Each chapter details a Bible story as well as a discipline/practice (like prayer, gratitude, service) that helped her remember that in God’s arms, she is “safe all along” life’s twists and turns

I’ll read anything that Katie Davis Majors puts out into the world because of how beautifully she writes about Jesus! To be honest though, I probably wouldn’t have picked up this book if it hadn’t been written by her but I’m super grateful I did- this book was encouraging and convicting to my heart in ways I didn’t even know I needed. She was vulnerable & honest & spoke with so much truth, grace & wisdom.

“I regret the time I worshipped at the alters of productivity, capability, busyness, distraction. This body and soul will become again what God intended them to be, living sacrifices offered only to him. I will spend my life on meaning, on connection, on love, on freedom. I will not waste one more day trapped in comparison, competition, proving and earning. That’s the currency of a culture that has nothing to offer me.”

That is just one of the nuggets of truth I will carry with me from this book! A must read!

This book is such an encouraging and life changing book. Rather than just exploring what it means to be secure in Christ, Majors writes several chapters focusing on practical ways you can safely and peacefully in Christ. Her illustrations are universal and help the reader to grasp the nuances involved in trusting Jesus. I can't wait to read this one again!

Read this at a time when I really needed spiritual encouragement. She gave tangible advice on staying rooted in the Bible in waves of anxiety and incorporating Jesus into daily life in the busy season of motherhood. Though some of the advice I had heard before, I still felt like it was all a great reminder and helpful

This book was a very smooth read. I’m a fan of books that discuss lessons learned from life experiences— this book was just that. A little different from other books by Katie, but I still very much enjoyed!!

One of the best books I’ve ever read and really spoke into my season of life. Her words have encouraged my heart deeply and have reminded me of the Lord’s faithfulness. I may read it 3x over. Highly recommend.
