Walter Grant became of age in the navy during the height of the cold war. He earned his aircrew wings as a radioman and radar operator aboard long range patrol aircraft tracking soviet submarines and trawlers lying offshore near Cape Canaveral during the space racesputnik was launched on his watch. He was schooled in atomic, biological, and chemical weapons, as well as antisubmarine warfare. His crew was selected to drop and test the first nuclear depth charge. He is one of only a handful of enlisted men to have flown Mach-2. Walter flew into Cuba before and after Castros overthrow of the Batista government which led him, sometime later, to read Tragic IslandHow communism came to Cuba, and in turn The Secret World of the KGBrequired reading for the CIA. His collection of books on the cold war is extensive. Walters military career took him to a dozen countries; his fascination with the cold war took him to more than twice that many. Two weeks after the Wall came down he passed through Brandenburg Gate into East Berlin and traveled extensively in the Eastern Bloca very sobering experience."
Wish they spent a lot more time talking about identifying and negotiating locations. There was a general list of good locations and a range of what to pay the landlord but things like the following are missing.
1. Common objections and how to handle them. Their liability, small money for them so they just do not care to engage, where the machines will be placed, etc.
2. A rubric for good locations. That's great that say a school is a good location but not of the machine goes in the old boiler room.
3. How much stock per location
4. Missed things that I think you would negotiate with the landlord like max number and of machines, placement, etc
There was a lot of emphasis on the logistics of starting a business in this book but there are a zillion such resources. I wish this book would have went into more industry specific information.
Based on experiences from previous “how to start” books, I was very skeptical about this book. I will say I was more than satisfied with the information and quality of this book. The information was concise and actually useful and very well thought out! Most “how to start” books just give you general information that one could find with a cursory glance on any search engine. The information had a very good chronological flow to it and it was very seamless. This is an absolute must read for anyone thinking of getting into this business as this is a wonderful starter guide. All the products and processes suggested, there are examples, websites, and companies to give you a boost in the right direction. Fabulous book and highly recommend it!
