Land on my feet? But I’m a raven, not a cat. Mom tossed me out of the nest with five dollars and the clothes on my back. Why? I visited my snitch brother in Danvers Sanitarium. Pariah or not, I refuse to abandon my favorite sibling. Did I forget to mention mom made me homeless on the night before my first day of high school? The principal took pity, but she stuck me in the boarding house with a nosy roommate. I refuse to flunk out of high school like the rest of my family. Breaking the cycle is a tall order. Three of my classmates decide to grief me because of my shady family. The others are part of an exclusive and mysterious clique. My only friend is Ed, a scrawny medium I rescued from a gang of psychic bullies. At least he doesn’t mind my obsession with ghosts. How will I get through the first month at this rowdy school, let alone three whole years? Scroll up and click BUY NOW or READ FOR FREE and swoop up your copy of this Gallows Hill Academy adventure!

Night Of Sorrow is the first book in the Gallows Hill Academy series by D. R. Perry.

I honestly believe that Perry's writing has improved since I first dove into the PPC universe. The author has finally perfected a balance between information freely given and merely hinted at in vague foreshadowing. Along those same lines I appreciated the pace of this first novel in the series. There was no momentum of rushing that I had become accustomed to when reading Hawthorn. Although, I do think there needs to be a disclaimer in the synopsis about reading the other series first given how much information in this book can only be understood with the prior knowledge offered in those.

Mavis Merlini has led a troubled life. I don't know how anyone could survive under Morgan Merlini's dominating, and manipulative control. It seems Crow, her brother, nearly didn't. Mavis is kind, inquisitive, and supportive even when life continues to frighten her given her upbringing. She's both studied the life of hard knocks, and intelligent in the scholarly and intellectual sense. Her interest and relationship with Roman DelSangre surprised me, I honestly expected her and Ed to hit off as more than just friends.

I'm happy to have further insight into the future of Ed Redford, Hope Dunstable, Saya Harcourt, and Cosmo Gitano. Their upbringing is beyond unique, as you've learned if you've read the rest of the series in this literary universe. Ed seems so different compared to his persona from when he was younger, which didn't make sense until we learned of the pressure his mother's and Bianca's fate put on him in having to pick up their duties. I'm more shocked that his father Neil abandoned him for some unknown reason... I hope we continue to see crossovers with characters showing up like Grace and Av, but more so for Albert, Irina, Blaine, Ismail, Kimiko, Tony, Fred, Olivia, and Gemma.

Seeing more clearly the differences in the three schools for extrahuman education within Salem has been enlightening. I do miss all of the familiars. But perhaps now we may finally touch more on shifter culture? Maybe since Ms. Klein runs this school we might see Hal and Faith as well?

Hard Time Following

I’m not sure if this series is connected to another series but I had a very hard time following this book. I found myself very confused over who was who and what species/powers each character had. I made it 56% of the way through the book and still have almost no idea what’s going on. There’s not very much backstory to each character. I read hundreds of a book a year but this is the first one this year I’ve had trouble trying to figure out.

I loved it!

Such a riveting tale. I couldn’t put it down. I got so engrossed in the story that I actually felt like I was apart of the story.
