Team Supercrew’s Benny the Brave is here to remind kids that they have the power to be BRAVE inside of them whenever they need it!
Sarah is having a tough morning. She’s about to start a new school that’s on a distant planet. She doesn’t have any friends yet. Her teacher may or may not be a swamp creature. And worse, lunch looks like it’s wriggling, slimy and alive! But just before the school bus arrives, Team Supercrew’s Benny the Brave comes to the rescue! He’s there to remind Sarah that these worst-case fears in her mind are okay, and that she has the power to change these thoughts. She has the power to be BRAVE, and it just might be closer to find than she thinks.
The Team Supercrew Book Series is rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a social-emotional therapy that focuses on the ways that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are interconnected. Our thoughts create our feelings! When we develop the tools to change our negative thoughts, we learn how to regulate our emotions in a positive way.
The Team Supercrew heroes, Benny the Brave, Keisha the Kind, Chloe the Calm, and Gen the Grit, bring these tools to children and families in a fun, engaging, and unexpected way.
There’s a hero in all of us. Team Supercrew. Be Extraordinary.
I know a lot of people are scared to try new things. How wonderful this book was written for kids who might be scared of going to a new school for the first time.
The illustrations are beautiful and endearing. The words are easy to read and comprehend. I think kids would get a kick out of seeing the illustrations that have food in the pictures, and would love to talk with the person reading them the book, about the funny pictures with food in them.
I love the capes on the characters. The kids I know, love capes. I think this would be a fun visual for them to carry with them when they are trying something new.
Also, I love that it acknowledges a child’s fears and emotions. Validating someone’s fears and emotions is vital to help them overcome the fears. It’s so important to listen to kids. And hopefully this book would help a child voice their own fears about trying something new, and hopefully the person sitting with them will be open to listening and reframing their fear to help them overcome it and succeed.
Benny The Brave in The First Day Jitters by Julie Ann Penn & Darren Penn, charmingly illustrated by Sergio De Giorgi is the first book in the Team Supercrew series to be released and is a must have book that highlights the power of bravery that lives within all of us. Benny is the superhero of bravery that helps Sarah overcome the jitters she faces as she gets ready for her first day of school. Sarah details all of her worries to Benny which are illustrated in this out of this world way that many of us may feel whenever we face the unknown, but with a child’s lens -- like your teacher having “gigantic teeth and a long slimy tail.”!
This is the perfect book to read at the beginning of the school year both at home and in school as little ones start to feel those first day jitters. As a classroom teacher, I am so excited to read this to my students during the first week of school!
This is such a wonderful book. I'm such a fan of children's books that can also have a positive impact on a child's social/emotional development. Benny the Brave eases Sarah's first day jitters by helping her flip her negative "what if" self talk into more positive "what if" scenarios. These Team Supercrew characters can empower children with tools to help them better understand and manage their feelings and emotions as separate from who they are and I'm all for it. I only wish that I had "Benny the Brave" in "The First Day Jitters" for my many "first day" experiences over the years! I'll definitely be sharing with friends and family with young kids and it would make a great gift for any toddler through elementary school aged child, as well. I can't wait to read more from this crew!!
The first book in a series of books that help young children cope with their emotions. Sarah worries about her first day of school on a new planet. She fears the school bus, who will be her teacher, will children play with her, and what the food will be like, among other things.
Benny the Brave flies in to assuage her fears. He talks about each and reminds her that she possesses the power to change her thoughts and be brave. The illustrations are large, bright, and multicultural with unmistakable appeal for preschoolers and early elementary school readers. As a bonus, discussion questions allow parents and teachers to follow-up with the readers’ reactions and questions.
Recommended for parents, teachers and librarians who work with children ages four through six.
Wonderful book for kids with a fabulous twist - "What if?" Such a positive strong message for children, full of possibility, but also grounded in a playful reality. I think actually everyone in the family can benefit from and relate to the message. The superhero theme is such a fun way to get kids to really pay attention to the underlying message and still enjoy a dynamic storyline. My 5yo nephew really adored this book.
I enjoyed reading this book about Sarah's first day at school. It's a little weird that the book is entirely dialogue without description, but it would probably work out okay as a read-aloud book. The illustrations are cute and colorful, and I appreciate that Benny assures Sarah that "it's ok to feel scared" (12) while also helping her to identify her fears and consider the possibilities of success. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
AmazonUnlimited review. Beautifully illustrated pre-K/Kindergarten book exploring the feelings a small child might have starting school. As a member if the Team Supercrew, Benny the Brave helps Chloe the Calm face her fears by finder her own superpower by asking “what if…”. Cute story designed for repeat readings with four steps to help a child needing a “bravery boost”.
This short children's story is about a little girl who is scared of starting a new school. But Benny the Brave, a character from a book she is reading comes to life and helps her feel braver.
I liked the idea of this one, but I was a touch confused at first due to me thinking the story was about a boy called Benny.
Overall the story has a nice positive message and with bright and colourful illustrations I think this would be a fun book to read aloud.
Benny, the Brave, in The First Day jitters is a very timely book especially for preschoolers and those getting ready to attend their first day of pre-school, kindergarten and Grade 1, and could also be useful for those a bit younger who are nervous about Daycare or a new Daycare. I like the characters in the story, the diversity of characters in this series of books and the pictures and illustrations are delightful.
Such a wonderful book to help empower kids to reframe what is new to them. Extends beyond just a first day of school lesson, to help kids see what is possible and helps parents with empathizing with their kids experience. Time to unleash the superpowers in us all!
Excellent book for 4-8 year olds. The story is terrific, and has a great message for kids. The illustrations are so creative and colorful. It’s also very inclusive with a variety of ethnic characters represented in the story. I highly recommend this children’s book!
Very cute story, easy read and relatable for kids starting school or even preschool for first time. The book is colorful and has contrast that draws the eye to help keep interest in the book
I love the idea behind this story. The writer and illustrator really matched visions, taking universal first day jitters and presenting them both vaguely and specifically enough to start conversations about the fears of young kids either starting a new trophic level in the school system or an entirely new school. New is new and scary is scary! I especially love the ‘what if’ parts of the story and would love to read the other instalments!
very cute book with good message and nice illustrations
“Benny the Brave in The First Day Jitters” was a cute and engaging book for little kids. It has a good message that is easily related for young kids. The illustrations were nice and the characters diverse. It made me want to get the whole series for my kids!
