Hat Trick Heart

Rate this book
When your agent calls and tells you that your publisher wants “something new," you do the only thing you can do:
Draw from real life experience.

Successful romance writer Macey Veronica’s life has revolved around hockey for as long as she can remember. When a blast from the past is forced in to her life again, six year old secrets are uncovered, and Macey V finds herself wondering how to fit feelings for three alpha hockey players into her one heart.

Max, Rafe, and Andy were the closest that three people could be without sharing blood while playing hockey together in college. Macey was their center, their grounding point, and they would have given her the world if asked. One fateful graduation party forced a rift between two that irrevocably changed everything…. Until years later when they find themselves all playing for the Tampa Thunder.

Macey loves them all, and always has. But is that enough to get them through this next chapter? Or will their pride prove to be too much to overcome?
---
Hat Trick Heart is a standalone reverse harem romance where the main character gets a guaranteed HEA with multiple love interests. It is intended for audiences 18+ for explicit language and sexual content, including MM, MMF, and MMFM scenes.

i literally never write anything on my reviews but i was so disappointed by this book i had to. im a slut for reverse harems and have read some awful ones but this one was terrible in the sense that it was NOT a good reverse harem - like the writing itself wasn’t exceptionally good or bad but the reverse harem aspect was terrible.

but anyways i took away 3 stars bc of the amount of times the fmc called herself small/tiny (it was an unnecessary amount like multiple times every chapter and if it wasn’t her calling herself small it was one of the guys), the random notebook stealing that literally added nothing to the story, the reason behind rafe ghosting them (sorry but if they were THAT close it wouldn’t have been that easy for them to lose contact for 6 years), how unhappy one of the members of the harem was with the fmc being in a relationship with other guys (he literally said he wished she would break up with the other two and just be with him - rhs only work when everyone involved is okay with the fmc being with multiple people), and all the unnecessary things in the story that felt like they were just there to fill up pages. also feel like there was no foundation (???? idk if this is the right word) to andy and macey’s relationship - it felt like she just randomly decided she wanted to be with him AND i feel like andy and rafe had a stronger connection than either one of them had with macey😭 this a solid example of how to NOT write a reverse harem - it would have been better off if it just followed max and macey’s relationship and there was no rh (was going to say rafe and andy should have a book too but their relationship was purely sexual even though they were supposed to be romantically involved too so nvm LMAO)

this is one of those “has good smut but at what cost” types of books. I had very high expectations for this book because it was my first hockey reverse harem. i was just let down sadly. i think there’s a certain plot structure to reverse harems that allow them to work that just wasn’t followed here. and the writing had no sense of nuance to it i was just so unimpressed. and the nicknames? every five seconds. i couldn’t go one line without a name or nickname. and none of them are explained except for pepper sigh.

also i hate books about books especially romcoms. and this book was about an author of a hockey romance… it’s just too much. also also i don’t particularly mind that rafe and andy get together it just felt a bit fetizhed. that’s why most of the ones i’ve read have had only physical intimacy with the girl and guys.

and like maybe i missed it but what the fuck did tiffany’s mom have to do with macey?? why did she force her daughter into stealing macey’s journal?? like i reread the scene and there is just no indication as to why this would happen. and the explanation is “her mom was a hockey fan who wanted to be with max”?? tiffany’s mother?? that part just confused the shit out of me.

i think the reason this book didnt work for me is bc i’m used to the relationship being more private and not in the public eye. it makes it a lot easier to focus on the story and not have to worry about the fallout of societal rules. it just brought me to reality too much when that’s not what i wanted. i did like how macey had supportive friends

lily gold has ruined any other reverse harems for me bc hers are just too damn good. i will always compare her books to other ones. she’s coming out with a new one soon so bless up

**Re-posting for release day!!!

Not fully reviewing until after the eARC comes out but let me just tell you, my Alpha read of this baby was 12/10. I love Market's characters, writing, setting--all of it. I am so excited for this to be out in the world for people to read!

*Quotes come from an uncorrected eARC and could change*

Sometimes, I think constant chaos is my baseline.

YOU GUYSSSSS. My friend. She did it. She WROTE. A. BOOK. And even more so??? A damn good one at that. Literally any one person who has been friends with me on Goodreads for the last seven years (I went back and checked when I first read The Deal, LOL) should know that I am obsessed with hockey romances. I have read so many at this point that I have lost count and it became SUCH an interest to me that two of my good friends and I each picked two hockey teams and watched their entire last NHL season together, updating each other daily on games, players, trades—you name it. I feel like a true fan now let me tell you, lol. One of those friends just so happens to be Ms. Ella Market herself. That leads me to reason #1 why you know this book and all ensuing books in this series are going to be amazing: Market is passionate about hockey.

Without her knowing, she became my everything, and only in my dreams could I hope that she felt the same about me.

While I’m here reviewing HTH, I might as well dive into how I met Ella Market and how we became friends. It started the way so many online friendships do these days. Shared bookish interests and obsessions. We both love the same YA/NA/ Adult Fantasy fandoms and many of the same books in the romance genre as well. She asked me to join a dark romance book club on Insta where I also met Cam, the third in our hockey obsessed triangle, and the rest is history. Reason #2 why you should know the relationships and spice in this book and all ensuing books in this series are going to be amazing: Market is passionate about romance (and honestly has read more romance in more subgenres than anyone else I have ever known and can probably give you a rec for literally anything you’re looking for).

“. . . there are team superstitions. The traditional shoulder check line or locker room song.” He pauses, and I force myself to look up at him, his blue eyes piercing me in a way that makes me squirm in my seat. “You, Macey, are a team superstition.”

But all that is beside the point. I’m here to talk about her DEBUT book, Hat Trick Heart, which is the first in a reverse harem style hockey romance series. Before this I actually hadn’t read many reverse harem romances and wasn't fully convinced that I could go ALL IN in that sort of dynamic. If you’re on the fence about whether or not this is something you’d like/ like to try, I would say this is a great place to start. Macey, Max, Andy, and Rafe all make such perfect sense together. Macey and Maxy boy grew up together in Toronto before moving to the States for school where they met Andy and Rafe as all three men played on U of M’s hockey team together. Macey immediately formed a special connection with Rafe because of their shared Filipino heritage and with Andy because he’s an all-around 11/10 great guy (anddddd if I had to chooooose, WHICH YOU DON’T, he would be my favorite). Fast forward six years and Macey, Max, and Andy are living in Tampa. Macey has fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a romance author and the other two play together for the Tampa Thunder. Because Fate is a cruel (or maybe actually VERY VERY KIND???) mistress, Rafe gets traded to Tampa, too, and the entire group is thrown into a state of chaos after the missing piece of their group returns to them after six long years of no communication.

Now I don’t want to spoil anything further but I will say this book really has it all. Second chance romance, friends to lovers, a great supporting cast, the perfect amount of drama, and men groveling, lollll. This might be Ella Market’s first book but if THIS is her baseline for quality writing, I honestly can’t wait to see what she comes up with next. I am finally led to reason #3 why you know this book and all ensuing books in this series are going to be amazing: Market is passionate about writing and is damn good at it, too.

Our future is built on the chaos of today. And I can’t freaking wait.

Huge thanks to Ella Market for allowing me to read a copy of this eARC in exchange for my honest review!

*AUTHOR POST*

Hi y'all!! This isn't a review, but I just wanted to come on here and say THANK YOU to everyone who has taken the time to read my debut novel, Hat Trick Heart. Your support means the world to me, and I hope you enjoyed yourself in the world of Thunder hockey!

A little insight into HTH: The idea for this book simply came from a conversation between my friend and I who love hockey and hockey romances about the fact that we have never read nor heard of a reverse harem hockey romance, so I said... I'm going to do it. My main character, Macey Veronica, was born when I felt the urge to tell the story of a character with a strong Filipino background, and I had the best time writing her story. And don't worry, you'll see plenty of Macey and her guys in future installments of the Thunderclap series (;

If you have any questions for me or just want to chat, feel free to message me through me on my author page or on instagram @ellamarketwrites! Thank you again for being here, and go Thunder!

Did I stay up late so I could read HAT TRICK HEART in one sitting? Yes, yes I did. I loved this book so much and it was such a delightful read. I had no idea I needed a polyamorous hockey romance in my life but you can bet I'll be looking up more after reading this. For a debut novel this was incredibly well written and polished and I was sucked into the story and the characters from the very first chapter.

Macey, Max, Andy, and Rafe were the closest of friends in college but after graduation Rafe ghosted the group when he was drafted to a different hockey team from Andy and Max. Now years later Max and Andy are shocked to learn that Rafe is being traded to their team, the Tampa Thunder, and Macey finds herself confronting her long ago feelings for Rafe and her newfound feelings for Andy and Max.

This was such an emotional read but it wasn't bogged down with too much angst, there was just enough to make things interesting. I loved seeing Macey develop a relationship with each of her men -- Max, the childhood best friend who is suddenly looking very hot; Andy, the charming goofball who always makes her laugh; and Rafe, the quiet soul who she thought she would never see again. This group had so much chemistry and I liked all the different combinations we see them interacting in. I also liked that HAT TRICK HEART explored Max's reluctance to share a partner and we got to see how he struggled with Macey also dating Rafe and Andy. Watching Max come to realize that Macey's heart was big enough for all of them was really sweet and I loved seeing him eventually embrace everything their relationship could be.

As an added bonus we also got so much relationship development between Andy and Rafe who are both bisexual and secretly harboring crushes for each other. There were so many sweet and sexy moments between these two and I adored the way they found love with each other outside of their love for Macey. Ella Market did a fantastic job creating all the different dynamics within the group and I loved that every moment wasn't completely focused on Macey.

Outside the romance, the hockey aspects and Macey's work as a romance author were really fun and I liked how Macey was basically the team little sister and they all loved her. And please tell me we are getting a book about Coach Reed because he definitely caught my eye. I also liked the Filipino rep, Macey and Rafe are both from the Philippines, and the way the two of them had a special connection because of their shared culture. And when it came to female friendships, Audrey and Cassie were everything you want in a friend and I loved how they supported Macey and gave her some tough love when she needed it.

My only real complaint, and it's so minor, is that there's no explanation for Macey's nicknames. And I'm not talking about a cute endearment that's self-explanatory. Each guy has a nickname for Macey -- Pepper, Bullet, and Movie Star -- and it's never explained how those came about. Which I mean, come on those are a little weird so an explanation would have been nice, lol.

Hat Trick Heart is the Debut novel by Ella Market. Let me tell you a little secret....This does not read like a debut. This book was outstanding and I cannot wait to read more by this author!

The story follows Macy, an author who is friends with Max, a pro hockey player and her childhood best friend. She has followed his career and never misses a game. Their friendship is unbreakable and realizes that their might be something other than just friendship. Then Rafe, another friend from college gets traded to Max's team. The problem is, Rafe left after graduation and never contacted them after his promises to always keep in touch. Enter Alex, Max's best friend who will always have Max and Macey's best interests at heart and has had a secret growing attraction to Macey for a long time. What will happen when Macey starts having feelings for them all? Will she be able to handle them or will she break everyones heart?

OOOOOOOOOOH this book is so good! And the level of intense, sexual tension....... is off the charts. The spice is so good and the sex scenes are crazy hot (keep a cool glass of water next to you while reading!). Each scene was written with care and you can actually feel the emotions of each character while reading. As I said earlier, this does not read like a debut. The book is very well written, the plot is kept in tact and there are no holes within the story. I loved this book and cannot wait to read more from this author. Well Done Ella! You have a fan for life. This book gets 5 well deserved stars!

There's just something about a reverse harem hockey romance that slaps like no tomorrow.

This is so full of character development and the plot itself is something so original. I absolutely loved the way each of these characters came together to create this unbreakable bond. I loved the friendships and the romance, but more importantly, how accurately the sport of hockey was depicted throughout.

I will always be team Max but honestly Rafe and Andy are the cherry on top. I love the way a MM romance is intertwined into this reverse harem and how Macey is so accepting and open hearted to all of her boys.

If you're a fan of hockey romances with the delicious twist of a reverse harem and a writer finding her way into the world, add this to your TBR.

There's SO much to love about this story and the characters created.

ARC REVIEW 🏒
This truly might be one of the sweetest books I’ve ever read. I was in a constant state of “🥰🫶🏻🥹” from the first page. It’s got such heart - and Ella’s writing?? For a DEBUT at that?? 🤌🏻 SO GOOD. The characters were the true show stoppers here. Macey V, our heroine, was sweet and STRONG, and had so much love in her heart for her men, her friends, her family.. and I have so much love in my heart for her! Max, Andy, and Rafe - all so different but the perfect blend of personalities for our girl. They’re all so smitten with her and I ate up every second of it. (If I had to choose.. which I don’t.. ANDY 🫶🏻). The plot flowed seamlessly with great pacing. And please note that while I called this book SWEET, there is a lot of SPICE as well 😌.

This book is everything I love in a hockey romance. Spice, banter, and of course hockey players.

Hat Trick Heart follows Macey, a romance writer, Max, Macey’s childhood friend and long time protector, Andy, one of Macey’s best friends from college, and Andy, another of Macey’s friends from college. They were an inseparable group, until six years ago when Rafe left them without a word. But Rafe is back, traded to the same professional team as Max and Andy. With the group back together, secrets and feelings come out changing their dynamic. As Macey writes her next book, a hockey romance inspired by the sport she knows best, she has to navigate her own hockey romance with the guys that have had a part of her heart for years.

This book has so many heartfelt and funny moments and I loved every second of it. Ella Market’s debut novel will have you wanting more of Macey and the Tampa Thunder the entire time you read. Hockey romance and RH lovers will absolute adore everything in this book!

Stop what you are doing and read this book!

I was lucky enought to receive an arc of this one and I devoured it, now that it is releas day here are my thoughts!

This is a reverse harem hockey romance (my first rh btw) and it did not disappoint!
Ella's hockey knowledge really levels this one up for me, though I do have to forgive the fact that she's a Lightning fan😉

The MCs are all equally fantastic, but Andy has officially stolen my heart, he is such a softy (but still so sexy) and I love it
What a freaking hunk!

This story is phenomenally written with top notch smut and equally great plot!

This had a lot of potential, but I think it just fell short.

I think if this is the authors first time writing a RH, it makes sense why there were so many issues, but I will probably not be reading the second book in the series.

Love love love! This book got me out of the RH funk I was in. I had read so many books where all the guys where like copy and paste from one book to the next. In Hat Trick Heart, all of the guys felt unique. They didn’t feel like any other characters I’ve read before. I loved all of the guys so much. I loved seeing their friendship and how it grew and changed with the relationship.
On to the spice. This book really brings the heat. I felt like the scenes were well written. They didn’t feel repetitive. I could really feel the chemistry between all of the characters. I just really loved their relationship dynamic. I felt like the characters were well written. You could feel the deep bonds that connected them all. I feel like this book is great for someone new to / on the fence about reading RH. This book is just everything I love wrapped into one.
If you love RH and Hockey/ sports romance you need to pick this one up. Ella really knocked it out of the park with her debut novel. I can’t wait for the future books in this series.

officially DNFing at 57%

I appreciated the realism - it makes sense for the characters to be struggling with adjusting to a poly relationship if that’s not what they’re used to, and it was a unique take, but I was not enjoying the angst between the MMCs. I know it will get resolved, but I didn’t want to put myself through it.

The writing was decent and the premise was enjoyable, I just don’t think the payoff will be worth the petty drama.

A surprising why choose romance with some very very interesting hockey players. Yes, I think this description best fits this book. And when I say surprising, I mean I went into it completely blindly and it’s not until I read the list of tropes at the beginning of the book (which I love when authors do that by the way) I fully understood what I was getting myself into. I read it quite fast and I truly believe it is quite a good read to get out of a slump and to read in one sitting. Macey, romance author, seems to have something lacking in her life. Max is her best friend of twenty years, her knight in shining armour but he is keeping secrets. Andy is her other best friend, also Max’s best friend and he is bi. And Rafe was her first crush, whom she hasn’t seen in six years since graduation night when something happened that she is not aware of. When Rafe comes back into town to play with the boys, everything starts to come to the surface and feelings are impossible to deny. Macey will be able to handle all the boys’ feelings towards her and even some because Rafe and Andy may or may not have a crush on one another too. This book was Soooooo spicy and soooo hot. In this MMFM romance I think you can find everything you would want in a why choose romance. And the fact that it was a hockey romance with three very very handsome and hot players … well, let’s just say you stay for the fun part!!! Add to it the fact that they are all overprotective towards her and also the fact that, because of her feelings, she decides to write her next book as a why choose romance … yes, there’s a lot of fun in this one !!! Overall I am very glad I read this book and I truly think it is a perfect standalone for every moment in time (if you’re into why chooses) !!!!!

Hat Trick Heart by Ella Market.

This is the debut novel for Ella Market and you would never know it. Ella is very talented and has a way with words. This is a smooth read and a fun story about discovering, and owning, your true self. In life and in love. Heartfelt moments, solid banter, and plenty of spice. I mean, multiple hockey players want the same girl and she doesn’t have to choose? SCORE. Congrats Ella, on a great debut, and thank you for the ARC!

Reverse harem hockey romance with a bipoc fmc? Don’t mind if I do. I also love how it’s based in Tampa off the Lightning which is my secondary (transplant) team.

So this was a set up that I loved, especially with a harem of one white guy, one black guy, and one Filipino guy. I’m so tired of harems being all white guys. But I did have my fair share of complaints:

- There was a lot of telling, not showing. A lot of things happening off page.

- Even though this was a fast burn the wait for sex scenes was weird. Why are they together but not fucking? It felt like she was trying to prolong the characters having sex so it didn’t start off the story that way but the sexual pacing was inorganic. She tried to follow the standard kissing, then oral, then sex formula but each scene was with a different guy so it didn’t make sense.

- An rh pet peeve is when I don’t get one on one scenes for the first time a pair fucks and that happened in this. The mm pairing are treated like she can’t have alone time with them and that was off putting.

- Didn’t get to see the mm pair’s first anal scene. Again, it happened off page.

- We didn’t get a love declaration scene from one of the guys which is a scene I really love in my romance novels.

This book had all the right ingredients but wasn’t left in the oven long enough. It was an enjoyable read but I won’t be reading the rest of the series. It’s a pass.

Fast burn with spitroasting, daisy chain, and airtight.

Finally A Sports Romance that is Diverse and RH!

This book is an emotional explosion .
Not only do we have "Its Always Been You"we have a" Second Chance" and and Friends to Lovers. I absolutely loved every minute of this book Macey a Fillapina romance writer learns she can't live without Max who has been her best friend since she was 8, Andy who his Max's best friend and Rafe who she loved from college. When Rafe got traded to Tampa (yeah The Lightning Hockey!!!!) 🌩 all of this groups unresolved feelings came to the surface in the best ways.
From away games to birthday bashes this Polyamorous foursome steamed up the pages and it was true 🌶🌶🌶🌶🔥🔥🔥🔥🤯
I was all for Rafe and Andy developing feelings and the kiss on the ice was 🥵.
This sports romance had lots of practice and game time in the pages , and the hockey superstition of before game rituals was so darn cute.
I give this all the stars and cannot wait for the next book in the series!

So this was pretty hot. She’s been friends with Max since they were 8 years old. They stuck together and picked up Andy and Rafe in college. Now all three of them are on the same pro hockey team and things shifted from platonic fast.

They each have a pile of nicknames which were a lot for me at first but I will never forgive the author for giving Maxipad as a “cute” name from Macey for her giant best friend.

This book made me a nervous wreck because things were going too well for too long. When things inevitably went wrong it was going to be so so messy and it sure was. Everything worked out in the end but it was touch and go for a bit.

Nice debut Ella!

Thank you to Ella Market for a copy in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own.

We love a why choose romance. With sports and make it MMFM? Sign me up! I loved this story so much I finished it under a day. The story was fun and sexy. Nothing too serious and just sexy enough to make you blush in some scenes. A great way to break from a reading slump (which I was in one for over a month). Who knew hockey could be so sexy (its me, hi. I didn't realize hockey could be sexy LOL)?

There were a few things here and there that felt repetitive and one or two things that didn't have a clear picture of motivation behind some plot points. Either way, I didn't mind these faults and loved the story regardless. I enjoyed reading bits and pieces from the author's Filipino culture that inspired a few of the characters including the FMC and one of the LI.

I'm excited for the second book to release next year!

This was touch and go for me but eventually I found myself enjoying it. I think my feelings had less to do with the overall book and more just that I hated the angst and drama of it when I wanted a more laidback book, which is 100% not the author’s fault.

Once the group figured their shit out, they were pretty damn cute tbh. I’m not sure how they ever thought the club situation would turn out any other way but oh well, it ended in a HEA eventually 😂
