A deluxe art book showcasing Haruichi Furudate’s incredible artwork from the hit manga series Haikyu!!
Ever since he saw the legendary player known as “the Little Giant” compete at the national volleyball finals, Shoyo Hinata has been aiming to be the best volleyball player ever! Who says you need to be tall to play volleyball when you can jump higher than anyone else?
The Art of Haikyu!! collects the dynamic and lush color art from the hit manga series, including chapter title pages, illustrations, bonus sketches, and more from creator Haruichi Furudate!
I'm not even the biggest fan of Haruichi Furudate's art style but let me tell you that this artbook is absolutely PHENOMENAL! 350+ pages of full color illustrations, containing everything from volume covers to color pages to celebrational drawings, well basically every artwork that was released while Haikyu was still in serialization. What a great way to recap the entire series! 🧡🖤
"There are times when you're so down, you don't want to hear 'cheer up.' At times like that, some happy people can just bring out the happiness in you."
That quote sums up what Haikyu did for me (especially Hinata).
No other series has impacted my life and changed me to be a better person today than these characters. Looking through this glorious art book was an unforgettable experience that brought tears to my eyes at numerous points. Even now I can feel my eyes well up with tears and get goosebumps because these (mainly) textless pages leave you in breathless awe of how phenomenal this story is and be able to appreciate it with no "distractions" on page.
Truly, having the chance to see so many of Sensei's illustrations enlarged with no text except with the original Japanese (and being able to physically hold them in my hand in book form no less!) was an incredible blessing. Thank you VIZ for publishing this in English as it is something I will come back to time and time again.
HIGHLY recommend this to any and every Haikyu fan because reliving the manga through these pages was emotionally moving and deeply satisfying.
I knew in advance that I was going to like this; I love illustration books and this is a newly beloved series of mine. However, this completely blew me away.
Included are all of the color illustrations Furudate-sensei has drawn for the series since 2012, which is pretty typical. The book is A4 sized, so it's quite easy to make out detail in the more complicated layouts. Furudate avoids a trap that has always particularly annoyed me - a lot of artists will compose an illustration with a focus in the center, only for it to be published in a book or magazine and be eaten by the binding.
Where it went from 'pleased' to 'impressed' for me was when I realized that they had included the color pages from the manga's original run. Series like Haikyuu!! are published in weekly comic anthology magazines, chapter by chapter, and occasionally the artists are asked to draw the first page or two of the manga chapter in color. Unless you buy the weekly anthology magazine (which, if you're lucky, contains at least 2-3 series that you're following...and like 15 that you aren't), these color pages can be hard to find. They're rendered in black and white for publication of the separate manga volumes (tankobon) and even for the ebook versions. You might see them again if the series gets a special "perfect" re-publication run, but that's pretty rare for a series whose target audience is munchkins who don't have much in the way of spending power. Anyway, long story short, I was pretty excited that they included them.
Then I realized that somebody had taken the "Complete" in the title very seriously - those weekly anthology magazines? Typically the covers feature characters from all of the included series, so someone went and snipped out each time the Haikyuu!! characters appeared on the covers. They included all of the little extra illustrations from the back covers of the tankobon and the light novels. They included art from a sticker pack that was once included as a freebie. Somebody rounded up all of Furudate's illustrations for the official Twitter account! THAT is dedication!
There's an index at the back, indicating where each illustration first appeared, most of them including a quick notes from Furudate about the materials they used or what they were thinking when they came up with the image.
I fell hard for this series three months after it ended and that will probably really affect how I experience it going forward. But an illustration book like this, where obvious effort was made to round up material that is often lost as time goes whooshing by, is an amazing resource. I'll never be able to interact with fandom as the series came out over the last eight years, but this gives me a firm foundation and reference point for the future.
"Around the time I was working on the chapter for vol. 10, WSJ ran a survey about series readers liked for their art, and ones they liked for their story. Haikyu!! Ranked 3rd on the list of series that had (I can't remember the exact wording, but it was something like) great stories but terrible art." -Furudate
I tried to find the poll but couldn't. Anyways that is so shocking to me (I haven't actually read the beginning of the manga so I can say much about it) Furudate's art is amazing. So dynamic it at times really feels like watching volleyball. This book is gorgeous, big, and heavy. Just so inspiring as an artist. 💖💖💖
Me'l vaig comprar al Barnes & Noble l'abril del 2023 en el meu primer viatge a Nova York perquè estava molt bé de preu i ara el tinc exposat en una lleixa del meu despatx ♥ una preciositat! :3
it's incredibly refreshing to get to look at so many illustrations of my favorite manga series will definitely be grabbing this one often for inspiration
Had a moment (if you can call 3.5 hours a moment) to think about this book. But, as they say, a picture’s worth a thousand words.

Come on, team, huddle up! We’ve got ourselves a real big ace here—an artbook so full of vibrant moments and raw emotion that it might just hit you harder than one of Hinata and Kageyama’s quick attacks. This one’s ready to spike you straight into the nostalgia zone. This compilation of Haikyu!! art is truly a visually stunning collection of scenes, capturing the greatest, most heartfelt moments of Karasuno’s journey.

Here are a couple of scenes from the book I’d like to address more thoroughly.
Page 108-109 – Color title page from Shonen Jump, 2015: A winter nighttime scene outside Sakanoshita market. The nostalgia is hitting me like a truck! The Karasuno crew hanging out, Sugawara mid-laugh, almost toppling over, Hinata munching on a meat bun with gusto, and Yamaguchi’s head peeking out from behind the puppy, his phone camera’s flash going off. More than just beautifully drawn, this scene is emotionally redolent—a vivid reminder of those simple, joyful moments with friends after school.
For me, it’s more than a great piece of art—it’s a personal flashback to my own teenage days. That scene pulls me right back to winter nights filled with music, talks, and adventures. The kind of moment that makes me smile, yet a little wistful.

Pages 164-165 – Color title page from Shonen Jump, 2016: This one’s straight-up summer with the whole crew. Karasuno hits the beach, and the scene is bursting with energy—bright colors, relaxation, and laughter filling the air. Full of action, it’s like I can see the water splashing when Tanaka hits the surface with that graceful dive of his. Wish I could be there with everyone. This group of friends is just so full of love, and it’s like I, as the reader, am part of the group, exponentially expanding my feeling of missing out. But I try to focus on the positive here and treasure those false memories.

Page 175 – Vol. 27 cover: Now this—this is the perfect start to a game. Sugawara setting the ball, the tension and motion radiating off the page. The more I look at it, the more perfect it seems. Every detail is there: his focused eyes, the curve of his back, beads of sweat flying mid-air, his fingers perfectly poised for the set. It’s the beauty of the sport, captured flawlessly.

Pages 222-223 – Color title page from Shonen Jump, 2019: This one might be my favorite—the guys sprinting through the street during winter training. Hinata and Kageyama in the foreground, running ahead as the others try to keep up (or play in the snow :D). The energy is palpable: Hinata’s wide grin, Kageyama’s determined expression, their breath visible in the cold air, and the clear blue sky overhead.
I love the bright red on Hinata’s cheekbones and the tip of his nose, his orange hair flaming in the wind. Kageyama is close behind, his eyes wide and concentrated, the tip of his nose bright red from the cold, black hair flowing in the wind. It’s almost as if he’s about to grab Hinata, his half-open gloved hand pushing forward. The two boys—beautiful, happy, living the moment.

Tired but happy, reflective but hopeful. This reminded me of all the little moments that make life worthwhile—the friendships, the laughter, the struggles, and the victories, both big and small. This is, for me, a book that inspires me to keep going, no matter how hard life gets.

At a time when it feels like I’m constantly having to push forward with no progress, this artbook gave me a much-needed boost. No, it hasn’t solved my problems, nor has it cured my depression, but it’s reminded me why I keep pushing forward—why I still play the game after myriad losses, savoring those few moments of accomplishment, having learned from past mistakes.

If you’re a fan, this book is a great addition to your collection—a valuable moment of reflection. It’s got everything I love about the series: the energy, the heart, and the unbreakable bonds. Even if you’re new to it, there’s something here for you—whether you’re into volleyball, sports in general, or just want something uplifting and nostalgic.
I am just in absolute awe of Furudate's dedication to their craft - this book is packed full of some of my favourite illustrations of all time, full colour masterpieces and funny little side comics - imagine doing everything from drawing doodles for the official twitter, sticker designs and detailed splash illustrations while drawing and writing a chapter a week for 8 years that you put so much care and thought into??? Furudate really did that and this artbook is a testament to that effort. I simply can't express how much I love this.
Massive artbook of 8+ years of art, most interesting was the evolution of Furudate's art from 2012 to 2020...as they did admit to being encouraged after a poll in the early portion said Haikyuu has great story but bad art...sad. Regardless the commentary following most of the larger images was insightful and I loved all the watercolor as well as more experimental aspects that led to how great some of my favorite arts looked.
The artbook original JPN Olympic team lineup was awesome, and the tour of Furudate's workspace was nice. I also enjoyed the artbook original comic about the trip to Brazil.
Overall the artbook is worth the asking price both as a collectors piece and also as a piece to relive key moments from one of the best sports series of all time. Over 400 pages spanning cover arts, color pages, collaborations, and more that were drawn by Furudate are included. Anime art is not included.
This is an Artbook ive been waiting to get for so many year because of how expensive it is! However it is PACKED with beautiful illustrations and it has great quality as well! I enjoyed going through it a lot even though it has practically no text on the main pages!
One added bonus though is that in the back of the book furudate takes us through every illustration with a little side comment again which I found very charming and theres also a Workplace reveal of his office and a few extra illustrations made for pamphlets and such!
Definitely worth for a dedicated Fan of the series and manga!
If you are a fan of Haikyuu in any sense of the word then I highly recommend this book to you. Even if you can't read Japanese, I most certainly cannot, this book is still very enjoyable! It's nice to see all the art blown up large enough to see all the details and all the additional doodles and random art of the characters.
As a fan with no shelf space for all the manga volumes, this was a perfect alternative instead. I love how it's colored and it features art work spanning from their beginnings and even beyond the manga timeline. Definitely going to be a treasured memorabilia!
I love it so much, it brings true joy It's amazing, perfect, the best purchase ever. There's illustrations of ever character at different ages and situations, the AUs are awesome.
