Following on from Hung, Drawn and Executed, this second volume showcasing the work of Graham Humphreys contains almost 100 new paintings, many of them created during the pandemic.
With home entertainment playing such a crucial role during the Covid years, Graham found himself busier than ever and with increased focus. From Blu-ray reissues to soundtrack LP covers, and book jackets to private commissions, this new work is among the artist’s best yet. Classic horror, independent films, and reimaginings of cult movie posters, it’s all here!
All the work featured was painted in the traditional medium of gouache on watercolor paper, using techniques that Graham has refined over his 42 years as a professional illustrator. The book’s title is a nod to the marketing of the famous movie franchise in which Graham was involved.
Graham Humphreys is an illustrator and visual artist best known for producing film posters. During the 1980s, Humphreys worked with Palace Pictures, producing publicity material for such films as Dream Demon, Basket Case, The Evil Dead, and Nightmare on Elm Street. Whilst most artists now work digitally, Graham remains dedicated to the medium that has supported him throughout his career: paint on paper. Current projects include vinyl LP sleeves, posters, private commissions and work for horror film festivals.
It’s no secret that Horror films are big business. Over the decades literally hundreds of low-budget Horror films have come out-some at theaters, and some to direct market though DVDs and VHS. Artist and graphic designer Graham Humphreys over the span of his career has created new cover art of said films for VHS and DVD.
His style incorporates many of the same elements and color palette of past horror film artists on films, book and magazine covers and the like.
While his work is chillingly polished and expertly designed and laid out it still has that slightly schlock and kitsch look with its garish colors, shocking images, light and shadows, background montages and in-your-face title text.
In Nightmare On One Sheet The Horror Art of Graham Humphreys, written and designed by Humphreys and published by Korero Press, the artist demonstrates how he comes up with his ideas.
He includes a step-by-step full-color tutorial of the creation of one of his paintings explaining the process as the demonstration moves along.
The book is filled with his color work including production notes, how the paintings came about and the inspiration behind each piece of art.
It’s a fascinating and instructive look inside the mind of a truly creative artist with his own unique and flamboyant style.
Psalms 55:22 - Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
A tremendous collection of hand-painted artwork from film cases (blu-rays, 4Ks, etc), posters and LPs brilliantly reproduced in full colour. The art is mostly from horror films, so may not be to everyone's taste, but it it was perfect for me! I have even seen quite a lot of the films included, although the ones with the artwork shown in the book tend to be special editions. There is a short description alongside each image giving a bit of detail about how it came to be. Also included is an interesting essay on how the author/artist got started in the business. A valuable addition to any horror fan's collection.
