Daniel Jay Millman is an American author and lecturer in the personal development field. He is best-known for the movie Peaceful Warrior, which is based on his own life and taken from one of his books.
The story Secret Of The Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman is about a boy named Danny Morgan and his troubles with moving to a new school. His troubles began on his walk to school with new neighbor, Joy. Out from behind a car the school bully, Carl appeared. This was the beginning of many encounters with Carl and Danny. During lunch Joy filled Danny in on Carl the “School Bully” as he was shooting hoops by himself. That night while Danny was sleeping he dreamt about his neighbor, Socrates. The next day Danny met Socrates while trying to avoid Carl. From that moment on Socrates helps Danny learn to solve his problem.
Teaching Moments: Social Skills - How to make friends. Social Skills- How to deal with bullying. Social Skills- How to solve friendship problems. Believing in yourself building self esteem.
Most teaching moments for this book would begin with class discussions on the above topics and brainstorming : What makes a good friend? How to be a good friend? How to solve problems with peers? My main goal is to have my students be able be aware of their actions and how they effect others.
I believe in my own heart that each of us deep inside is a martial artist, regardless of actual ability, and that we can learn from martial arts lessons about living in peace and dealing peacefully with the enemy, or with less force as possible, and that defensive movements are the key, not outright violence. The Kung Fu movies we see are enjoyable, sure, but as far as teaching positive values, nine times out of ten they screw up and preach about vengeance and death, neither of which, I feel, are what being a martial artist is all about. This kid's book does it's best to correct it, and the ending is kinda sappy and unrealistic, but I'm stubborn in believing even a sappy ending can be real. A young boy gets bullied and his new friend, a girl, introduces him to old man Socrates, who shows him the way of a peaceful warrior, and his training methods are as unorthodox as that in the Karate Kid movies, where Mr Miyagi gets Danny La Rusa to wax on and wax off a slew of cars to make him stronger in body and spirit for a martial arts tournament. Socrates here trains the kid, named Danny (see the connection?) by pulling a wooden cart full of apples, often with Socrates riding inside it. Quite unique, and over time Danny learns that courage comes from facing fear, which is only a smokescreen, an image. Destroy the image, as Bruce Lee himself once said, and you destroy the enemy, and nothing destroys the enemy better than the peace and the love of a peaceful warrior. I myself have faced and conquered fear multiple times, so this book is a good way for me to reconnect with myself, and I'm proud to say that at 51 I've grown and strive to become a better hero to others in my community to the best of my ability. Hopefully if I suggest this book to others, others will be as blessed with it as I've been. It's my gift to all of you. Remember to Learn from it, that peace and love are the only weapons you need to win against darkness. How you use them is up to you, and I wish you the best. You are the new generation of martial arts warriors, of whom I'm already proud!!! Three stars When they want war, prepare for peace!!!
Good read for kids with life lessons and messages on dealing with bully and fear. “Never resist force. Bend with it and use it. There will always be someone stronger than you.”
This book also teaches the value of practice and how to be courage.
“If you run from a problem, even if you get away for a while, it keeps chasing you. The best way to escape from a problem is to solve it.”
“The secret if courage is to act brave even if you’re not feeling very brave.”
We just started a unit on friendship and this was a great connection to many of the topics that have come up lately: bullying, what goes around comes around, friendship between genders and more.
The best part was that my class was totally captured by the story. It's really fun to read a book that really grabs their attention. This was a great one for that!
I love this book because it was about confronting your own fears and dealing with bullies. The only issue is that this book is geared for a younger audience, yet many children may not know the significance of the name "Socrates" or the dream of the cave (in reference to "Allegory of the Cave").
Danny Morgan moves into a new neighborhood and is confronted by the school bully on his first day. He then meets an old man named Socrates, who teaches him the secret of the peaceful warrior. n interesting story of dealing with bullies using courage, love and understanding.
This is a story about a young boy named Danny. Danny's family moves to a new neighborhood, and he is confronted by a frightening bully. One night in a dream, Danny meets an old man with shining white hair--a man who will soon appear in real life and share a wonderful secret. An inspirational story about courage and love.
This was a comforting book for Glen to read when he came out of school. I feel it would be of benefit to any child who has been bullied as it is empowering in a gentle way. Gave Glen's copy to Jacky Forsyth.
Really not sure about this one- Deals with bullying, (thus the current classification) but the book is based on an adult book by the same name and author. Have had people ask of it more for the author connection.
