Dream and Grave. The names are ridiculous, surprisingly the story actually has potential.
The plot left me disoriented because it’s difficult to understand why some things happen. With the writing that lacks of atmosphere, most events happened too fast or fade to black. The plot mostly lack of purpose, but it was a good book that manage to hold my attention and I kinda like them both together.
“You think you’re too much?” he says leaning in to kiss the sensitive skin between my neck and collarbone. “That’s good. The more of you the better ‘cause I’m never gonna get enough of you.” He bites at the same spot, and I can’t help but cry out.
“I don’t like goodbyes.” I tell him truthfully. He comes closer. “I don’t like them either,” he says. “You know how to avoid them?” I shake my head no. “Don’t. Fucking. Leave.”
Well, I have to leave this one. Cute premise. Twink MC with pink-tipped hair and an attitude to match. Villainous type MC who falls hard. But the writing style wasn't working for me. Nice plot twist midway, but I'm bored and in a slump! DNF 54%. CWs for homophobia, violence, MC getting his ass beat, and not in a good way.
Highlights:
• It’s like watching a ballet instead of someone delivering eggs and hash browns.
• “Morning. I’m Dream. I’ll be your waiter today.” Dream, of course that’s his name— how fucking on point.
• Dream returns with my coffee and sets a water down in front of Hawk. “I don’t drink that shit,” Hawk sneers. “Where’s my fucking beer?” “Sorry, daddy, I’m new around here. Is that the way the locals say thank you?” Dream pops off. Hawk’s face turns red. “Daddy,” he sputters.
• Since I agreed to let him stay in Adeline, he only speaks to me when he absolutely has to, but even silent, Dream manages to be loud. Cold food. Warm beer. Tabasco-spiked coffee. All are Dream’s not too subtle payback for me threatening him on his first day on the job. I’m eager to see what punishment he’s serving up today.
• “Well, you’ll have to do.” She huffs. “Just be his gay Yoda.”
• “You act like my jizz has glitter or something. Do you believe in unicorns too?”
3.5 stars. Fairly intense short read which was full of violence and a few interesting twists. It touched on a number of things which I would have loved to see further explored and more detailed, but that can be one of the downsides of a novella length book. I hadn't read the other books by this author but it has made me curious to try them. I received a complimentary copy of this book and am happy to leave a voluntary review.
3.5 stars - rounded up to 4 because the -0.5 is for all the punctuation errors in this book, so many quotation marks in the wrong place! I hope this book is corrected soon as it did detract from the writing.
Thought I’d find the initial violence too much but it became clear that Grave did not want to do it, and the attraction he felt Dream kept me reading, even if his acceptance of his previously unsuspected bisexuality was conveniently immediate.
Enjoyed the book, despite the rubbish punctuation, and hopefully any future books i read by this author won’t have that problem.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
These characters sure have some interesting names! Dream and Grave.. what a nice couple? Okay, I am fibbing about the nice part. This book is not nice, it is dark, gritty and bloody. Bad boys on motorcycles, dubious morals and lots of anger issues. The plot is fast paced and complicated. Since this is a prequel, it leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The characters are definitely interesting. While I am not sure how much I buy the whole bi-awakening, insta-love thing, they were a good match. Kind of cute actually, a big bad biker and a sassy twink.
**I was provided an ARC of this book from the GRR for an honest review**
Dream is part of the Jagged Love world and is a novella/prequel. I had read One Day and Now and seriously loved them. Dream was just as good! I loved Grave and Dream. I loved seeing Cash and Johnny. The story line was well written even being a novella. Overall, loved it!
I liked this story for the most part. I wasn't a fan of the eleventh hour break-up. I didn't get why Dream had an easier time trusting the bad boy biker than believing him as Jack. He assumed all these things about Jack and the way the relationship was going to go before it even got started. It really showed that he was only a 20 year old. I'm glad it all worked though and they presumably got their HEA. I'm curious about Cash and Johnny's book but I honestly find their names distracting for me so I may put off reading it for a while. Like how was there not one Johnny Cash joke in this novella regarding them?
Firstly let me say I got this book from gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review. This is the first book that I’ve read by Remi Varlow And I’ve got to say I was really impressed by the storyline. I was on tender hooks for the majority of this book. I wish it could’ve been a bit longer but that was because I was gutted when it ended. You’ve got Grave Who is an enforcer for the Reivers MC and putting it mildly you would not want to meet this man in a dark alleyway. If you get to meet him you know you’re in trouble and he has no qualms about taking your life or given you the beating of a lifetime. The MC is a drug running criminal outfit of some of the worst individuals who are homophobic bullies mean men. When Grave is to meet with the President Hawk at a local diner his life turns around because until that point he was in a dark place where all the violence and death clung to him like a cloak. But then he saw a ray of sunshine which totally stopped him in his tracks you see he came across a stunningly beautiful man with rainbow tattoo and pink tinted hair. Grave has never been attracted to a man before but he could admit to himself that this boy was making his heartbeat again.
Dream had not had the best upbringing his mother did nothing for his confidence she basically left him at the age of 14 telling him he wasn’t good enough. He had a string of bad boy friends who used him and this is how he finds himself stuck in a town in Kentucky because his boyfriend had left him high and dry stolen the car stolen his money and now Dream had to make enough money to get to Chicago so he could go for the most important job interview ever. He got a job at Little diner and he was grateful to Kara. When he saw this hulk of a motorbike rider in the Diner he had to tell his body to stop reacting because he was off men.
And that’s just the beginning of how they met there are so many twists and turns in this book the violence is quite horrific at times but in this book we learn how these two lean on each other. You find it hard to wonder how a relationship is going to take off when the MC is such a homophobic club. And when dream chooses to let his mouth run-off against hawk you knew it wasn’t going to end well. But could Grave keep him safe. ??
Like I said I really enjoyed the main characters in this book I absolutely adored how Grave could accept his feelings towards Dream he didn’t run scared in fact you could say it was love at first sight. And dream has got so much to overcome because of his past of finally finding somebody who wants him for him. I’ve given this book 5 stars because I really really did adore the story but what I am going to say is there are so many errors in this book it did annoy me. what really annoyed me was when the character names got confused and mixed up and you had to read back to make sure you were reading about the right person. So I really hope that gets fixed. I must admit I am intrigued to read the other books by Remi about cash and Johnny. I’m very glad that I found this author
I loved One Day and Now, so when I got the chance to dive into the prequel novella, Dream, I jumped on it. And I have zero regrets about this because Remi Varlow once again took me back to the fictionalized version of my home state of Kentucky and tossed me back into the cruel world of the Rievers, this time with the enforcer, Graves, who we got glimpses of in the full length novels.
This book takes place several years before the main action in One Day and Now, and I loved seeing these two side characters from those books fall in love. I also loved the glimpses of Johnny and Cash from before the series started. The connection between Daisy and Dream was also adorable and I too am a little in love with her.
There were a lot of really good parts of this book. Grave and Dream were good characters. The plot was tight. There was a decent plot twist that you could kind of see coming from earlier clues but still blinked about (the best kind of plot twists are those that are foreshadowed and make sense after all). I especially loved that the violence of the club was not sanitized.
I do wish there'd been more interactions between Grave and Dream, particularly in the earlier parts of the book. I think it would've made the relationship development feel more realistic. But that's alwyas my complaint with novellas, so I think that may be a me problem.
All in all, this book was amazing. Read it. (Buf first, read the content warnings for violence and homophobia as well as drug usage.)
Being a member of a 1% MC Grave did not expect to be knocked out kilter when he walked into the diner and spotted the new addition, the cute twink with blonde hair and pink tips. Dream was stranded by his ex in a strange town with know money or prospects. Having decided to give up on men the last thing he needed was to look up and see the gorgeous biker that just walked into the diner. Being straight all his life or so he thought had him thinking and wanting all kinds of things from that young man. Dream took it upon himself to serve Grave, but with Dream so close Grave was rendered speechless until Dream started to walk away. Meanwhile his MC president came in and took an instant dislike to Dream which presented a problem for Grave and Dream. He tried to scare Dream out of town, when that didn't work he decided to watch over him, but his MC was full of homophobes and incidents occurred. Dream was attacked which lead to Grave having to rethink his position in the club. Come to find out Grave was undercover and because of his constant developing feelings for Dream he decided to leave the MC and his job as an undercover agent. Now he just had to get Dream on board, having been left or dumped as long as he could remember Dream didn't feel he was good enough and wasn't sure he ever would. But, Grave made up his mind that Dream was his and if it took him the rest of his life he would make Dream believe it too. Loved this story, can't wait to see what is next in the series.😘😘
I rated this book 3.5 stars, so I rounded it to 4 stars. This is the first book that I’ve read by Remi Varlow and it won’t be my last. I enjoyed this prequel novella to the Jagged Love Series. Novella’s aren’t my thing as there’s just not enough pages to build up a relationship between the main characters but due to the situation Grave and Dream are in I think it bonded them quicker so it didn’t bother me as much as it usually would.
I liked Grave and Dream as characters and thought their chemistry was off the charts but Dream definitely needs some therapy to deal with his abandonment issues, and waiting for everything to crumble around him since that’s what’s happened in the past with people leaving and telling him he’s either too much or just not enough for them to stick around, his own mother said those exact words before leaving him as a teenager.
I’m glad that he’s found his person, family and a home. Grave’s mother is a forced to be reckoned with and even with the way she met Dream (awkward as f*ck first meeting with your partners mother that’s for sure), she just thanked him for being the reason Grave is finally home safe. I’m really looking forward to reading the next book of this series, as well as more books by Remi Varlow in the future. I’d recommend this book, series and author to others.
This 155 page story is packed with action and powerful characters. You are pulled to Dream and Grave from the start, and other characters pop in later with hints of something more and future stories we want to be written.
Grave is a man who’s given up on escaping the darkness his life has led him into. He’s done bad things trying to ultimately do good. Until twinkish Dream twirls his way into his heart, making him feel again. Dream is used to being left behind, to either not being enough or being too much. And his sassy mouth often gets him into trouble. And sassing off to Grave’s boss, co-founder of the Reivers MC, tops his list of bad choices.
Grave tries to stay away, to keep Dream safe, but he has to reveal himself to save Dream and help him flee to safety. True identities come to light and although he’s free from the dark place, Grave is now in a fight against Dream’s past and feelings of inadequacies. Dream can’t possibly be good enough for Grave or his love, much less his families’ love. Can he? Everyone leaves him eventually, so why get attached and hurt again?
Dream by Remi Varlow is part of the Jagged Love series. This story is told in dual POV. I loved this story and I also felt some things needed to be explained more in order to understand somethings. Almost like when you come into a movie in the middle of it and you are lost well some of this storyline feels like that. While I did receive an arc, the spelling issues were numerous, I do hope those were fixed before going live to the public.
Grave, the most confusing character I have had the pleasure to read. I think he is a biker? You will see when you read this through, he is confusing. Seems like a tough nice but gritty character.
Dream: butterflies and rainbows is what he reminds me of. He loves trouble and finds a lot of it when he falls for Grave. There are some not so flattering stereotypes thrown in with Dream but over all good character.
I felt this story has bones to be great. However as it stand right now it is okay. It is one where you have to suspend belief and hand on till the end to wait for the payoff.
I enjoyed Johnny and Cash’s books a lot so I was happy to hear about the prequel, set some years before their story. Grave and Dream’s installment does not disappoint. It's another sneak peek into the gritty, often violent world of the Rievers motorcycle club. I don't want to spoiler anything so I'll just say I really like the insta attraction between the MCs, Grave’s mile-wide protective streak, Dream’s sassiness…and yes, a little cameo from Johnny, Cash and (the always amazing) Daisy.
As you'd expect, there are issues the MCs are dealing with that tie into the novella's main themes: Grave is contemplating his dark side and his life terrifying anyone who crosses the Rievers’ path whilst Dream is dealing with abandonment issues and a lack of self-worth.
It's a pitfall I often fall into with novellas, but I would have loved a little more time with these guys to really delve into both character and relationship development…but I guess that's just a sign of my enjoyment. It's 4* from me.
An ARC was provided by GRR. This is my honest review.
I wanted to love this book. Opposites attract, biker hotness, sassy twink, bi discovery, redemption, bad boy spice, alphamallow...this book should have been my jam, but it just didn't hit me in the feels, make me yearn, fan myself, or engage me, instead I felt it fell short.
That's very, very much my minority opinion, of course. So when I say it didn't hit me in the feels I think it was mostly due to the pacing and the lack of depth in addition to the utter nonsensical reactions by Dream. Yes, I do understand his damage, I do understand that he's young, I really do. But reading his over-the-top reaction to the rather contrived shock of Grave's ex just added ridiculous to the unnecessary.
While the tropes grabbed my attention, the story lacked what I needed for it to keep my attention. This was the first book I've read by this author and while there were small gems that I did enjoy, I admit that I skimmed most of the book after realizing the grit, darkness, and stark yearning in Grave wasn't going to last beyond the opening scene and the "meet-not-exactly-cute".
A biker story with a twist. I don't do spoliers so can't go into detail. Grave is a self titled 'monster'; he is the Bikers' enforcer so violence surrounds him. He thinks he knows himself until he sees Dream working in the diner. Feelings he has never felt before consume him. Dream is an amazing character. He is snarky and sparkly with a spiky tongue that often runs away from him. He has had a rough life and has learnt lessons along the way. He has faced monsters before but isn't scared of Grave. They have a magnetic attraction that neither can pull away from. This book has angst and you can feel all of the emotions. The author manages to build the suspense but also pour in the emotion that even the kisses felt breathless. I loved how easy this book flowed and left us with a happy ending. Several potential triggers including high violence, guns and drugs. I received an advance review copy for free, and Ieaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed reading this short but interesting MC/MM prequel. The plot has detailed world building with some intriguing twists and I found the characters quite well-developed with individual personalities. It is about: a sexy male enforcer (Grave Merrik aka Jake Navarro) for a MC club (Reivers) considers himself a heterosexual male until he comes into contact with a rather sassy male server/waiter (Dream Jankowski) and to Grave’s confusion, the attractions begin to flare. There is: some delightfully snarky humor, MC clubs (Reivers & Vipers), a Mexican cartel, law enforcement, homophobia, rivalry, unexpected twists & turns, action, drama, intrigue, suspense, secrets, deceit, threats, danger, confrontations, violence, complications, misunderstandings, compromises, vulnerability, some steam, contentment & a satisfying happy conclusion. This is the first book by this author that I have read and I definitely look forward to more.
There was so much emotional intensity packed into this short story, honestly it had a bit of everything in one sexy package. I've been so curious about Grave and Dream from the previous books and their story didn't disappoint. it was intense, passionate, funny as hell (Dream) and it had tons of heart. My only complaint would be that it was way to short, I could have easily lost myself in Dream and Grave for so much longer. I highly recommend, Remi Varlow has written on hell of a series so far, can't wait for the next book.
* I received an ARC from GRR, this is my open and honest review *
I found it really interesting to have read the first book and now in the second to get a prequel and a chance to go back and see how some things started in this world. I enjoyed that a lot. The relationship between Grave and Dream used a favorite trope of mine in this type of world where the dark, main character thinks he doesn't have any feelings left after everything he's been through and then suddenly the other main character appears, is completely unlike anyone he's ever met and his emotions reawaken - gentle/possessive toward this new person and deadly toward anyone who'd threaten him. The names of these characters are not chosen at random, Grave is exactly as you'd expect and Dream is that for him. Very much looking forward to more in this series.
There is a lot packed into this novella. Bikers, undercover cops, hurt/comfort, found family. I received this as an ARC
While I enjoyed the story, it also felt a little unfinished to me. Which could have to do with it being a novella. There were also quite a few grammar mistakes, which hopefully are fixed for the release. Mistakes don’t really bother me, but I know for some readers it’s important.
The dynamic between Grave (Jack) and Dream was good, I could definitely understand Dreams hesitations and feelings about not being good enough. Overall I liked it, it was good to see a little forward from the first book that I read awhile ago.
Dream is stranded and working at a diner when he catches the eye of a big biker named Grave. The feelings mutual but his MC attacking Dream sets a whole new life in motion for them. They are so hot together, they set the pages on fire. Its distracting that sometimes their names are switched and there are some typos but the story is addicting. I really got into this book and enjoyed the action and Grave's steadfast love. I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.
Well thats one way to surprise someome... Dream has had time to wrap his head around the big bad biker showimg some interest.. not acting on it. So when Grave is revealed to be Jack a college educated man with a family that supports him, it too much for Dream. Every "normal" man has hurt him, and in his mind Jack could be the one to destroy him.
Jack (Grave) has always considered himself straight.... but the sweet twinky server has caught his eye... now he needs to get them both away from the MC.
Dream is a Jagged Love series prequel. This is a good story but I felt the writing should've been better edited. At times it was hard to read. Dream and Grave go through a lot to get their happy ending. This book has surprising twists and turns. Dream and Grave work well together and it seems Dream was just the person to help Grave find his future. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of the book I received from GRR.
This is my first Remi Varlow story. I was curious to what this grumpy/sunshine story would bring. Grave is a self-proclaimed monster. But he sees one look at Dream and everything changes. I really enjoyed the story and the spin in it was fantastic. And all within a novella setting. It makes me very curious about the rest of the series that is already published. Worth reading more of Remi's books.
As the prequel to the author's debut, it works well to get me interested in the first full book. We meet Cash and Johnny during the novella in their younger years. I think it just needed a couple more pages just to really have me feeling Grave's feelings toward Dream. I did like them both, there was enough there to get a sense of both characters, and I'd love a longer version of this.
3.5 stars. A short read with lots of action. Grave is the sergeant at arms in a 1 percenter MC. Dream a guy left stranded in a homophobic town by his jerk of a boyfriend. They connect but Grave is straight or so he thought. He is also very protective. I like it all, only Grave’s infatuation seemed unreal while Dream seems to notice that and acts accordingly. But overall it’s a good read.
This is the first book that I've read by this author! I am looking forward to reading more books by this author. This is a prequal novella and this is Dream and Grave's story! This book was fast paced and I wished some things were explored a it more. So I'm off to read the next book in this series! I read an advanced copy of this book and this is my unbiased review!
This book was good! I loved that Grave is not angsting over being attracted to Dream, he’s just like “oh, that’s new” and goes on being a badass. Dream is mostly great but his insecurity is so sad. I understand why, as his full story is told, but still. I really like this series so was excited to get another story in this world! Recommended.
I absolutely love this whole series, but dream has a special place in my heart so I’m so happy he got his happy ending. Jack is the perfect man for him even if Jack doesn’t think so, their love is what love should be, someone always willing to go above & beyond to keep you safe & loved. I absolutely enjoyed this & I love Remi’s work. I can’t wait to read more. ❤️😀
I remember Dream in the Jagged Love duet so I was excited when I saw the author was writing this prequel novella about Dream and Grave, the enforcer of Reivers. The MCs connection is fast but both are nervous about building something because of their differences but their love wins out in the end. Enjoyable return to the series.
