It's been five years since Ella Bancroft lost the love of her life, Harper Fortescue, and despite her friends' encouragement, she's still not been able to move on. The one thing keeping Emily smiling is the success of her hat shop, Ivella. Darcie Newland won't ever forgive Ella for stealing her fiancé and ruining her life, even though Harper was never really hers to in his heart. After being exiled by her parents to Scotland after another scandal, Darcie is now back in Burmingham and set on revenge.

This is the second book in the series, and it follows on five years after Harper Fortescue passed away after catching TB. Ella has teamed up with her old rival Ivy Gladwin and their shop Ivella is doing so well they've managed to hire some staff to help out. All the characters are back and some new ones too. I love Lyndsey Hutchinson; her books are always easy to read, but they will pull at your heartstrings too. There are characters you'll love and one you'll love to hate. Ella has faced a lot of obstacles in her life, but she always seems to overcome them. I've thoroughly enjoyed catching up Ella and the reast of her friends.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #BoldwoodBooks and the author #LyndseyHutchinson for my ARC of #HeartBreakForTheHeartGirl in exchange for an honest review.

Another delightful tale spun from the pen of Lindsey Hutchinson, THE HAT GIRL'S HEARTBREAK is the sequel to "The Hat Girl of Silver Street" but suffices well enough as a standalone. However, to fully appreciate the backstory alluded to in this book, I recommend you read the first book before diving into this one. You won't be sorry. If you like Catherine Cookson, you will love these books!

Walsall 1906: It's been five years since Ella Bancroft lost her fiance Harper Fortescue to tuberculosis just prior to their wedding, but still she has been unable to move on from her grief. Her business as a milliner has grown from her premises in Silver Street to partnering with her former employer Ivy Gladwin into the esteemed Ivella milliner's shop (a combination of their names Ivy and Ella) that is the talk of the town...and beyond. While Ivy's creations are still stuck in the bygone past, Ella's designs are more sought after and thus bringing the welcome trade to their shop. Ivy can't help but still feel a twinge of jealousy that Ella's designs are favoured over hers while at the same time being grateful to combine their talents to make their business the success it is.

Business is doing so well that they take on two new milliners - Freda and Thora - and a shop girl, Katy. And soon they all become the family that both Ella and Ivy lack. But it isn't long before they all become concerned about Ivy's sudden changing behaviour. She is more snappy than usual, frustrated and often forgetful. Ella seeks out advice to help Ivy in any way she can. What then follows is a heartbreaking journey into the degenerative state of Ivy's health as dementia sets in that could only end in tragedy. The women all rally around to support Ivy in any way that they can for as long as they can.

With so much going on, it would seem Ella has little time for romance but when she meets Nicholas Gerard at soiree, it's love at first sight. And yet she still can't let go of all her old fears attached to losing Harper so tragically before their wedding. And with her business and worries about Ivy, does she even have time for romance? But it seems Nicholas has yet to get that memo as he makes the journey from Birmingham especially to ask her to dinner. How could she refuse?

With all the furore going on in her head, Ella seeks out a medium in an attempt to seek permission from Harper in the afterlife to let him go and move on. But it seems her misplaced intentions bring her face to face with an old adversary who bears Ella grudge and a desire for revenge like no other. One that could threaten her life and her livelihood.

I so loved revisiting the characters from "The Hat Girl of Silver Street" and meeting new ones. Everyone is so warmhearted and welcoming it's like stepping into an embrace, so immersed into Ella's life we find ourselves. Flossie is like a mother hen and it was so good to catch up with her again. The new faces bring a different edge and new aspects to the story.

THE HAT GIRL'S HEARTBREAK is a wonderful tale that I read in one sitting, so easy are Lindsey Hutchinson's stories. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to more by this fabulous author. If you like Catherine Cookson, you will like Lindsey Hutchinson.

A perfect easy read for those who enjoy historical sagas.

A “ho-hum” historical romance with an interesting variety of characters and a unique storyline but predictable outcomes for the characters and not enough drive to hold the attention of the reader. No surprise endings here!

Overall, this novel is better than much of the historical fiction that has been published recently. Still, there are some slips in the dialogue into modern terms, phrases, and grammatical construction, as well as frequent occurrences of misplaced modifiers which render the meaning of a given sentence somewhat awkward. The narrative is often “padded” by the immediate repetition of details in consecutive sentences by merely rearranging the words slightly.

In my opinion, a good editor could have transformed this mediocre book into a shorter but very good one.

I have been a fan of Lindsey's work for a while now. I haven't quite caught up with everything that she has written which is something that I hope to rectify fairly soon. I read the synopsis of 'The Hat Girl's Heartbreak' and it certainly sounded like the brilliant sort of story that I have come to expect from Lindsey- an emotional read. Well it was certainly that and so much more. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'The Hat Girl's Heartbreak' but more about that in a bit.

For me, the fact that I saw Lindsey's name on the front cover of a book that I hadn't yet read was enough to grab my attention and draw me in. As soon as I started reading, I knew that this was a book that would prove to be seriously addictive. I was spot on too. I had initially picked the book up intending to read a chapter or two to say that I had made a start but I became so wrapped up in the storylines and in the lives of the characters that I was still sat there reading over an hour and several chapters later. My Kindle wasn't exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn't bear to miss a single second of the story. The more of the book that I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. All too quickly I reached the end of the book and I had to say goodbye to Ella and the rest of the characters. I found 'The Hat Girl's Heartbreak' to be a gripping and emotional read, which certainly kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat.

'The Hat Girl's Heartbreak' is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Lindsey Hutchinson. Lindsey has one of those easy going writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. In fact reading one of Lindsey's books feels more like a chat between friends rather than reading a book. I hope that makes sense. Lindsey has obviously done a lot of research into the time period in which the story takes place and this shines through in the quality of her writing. Her knowledge about that era makes the story seem that bit more authentic. Lindsey clearly cares about her characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which she describes them. She makes her characters seem just as real as you and I. I love the way in which Lindsey makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action.

In short, I absolutely loved reading 'The Hat Girl's Heartbreak' and I would definitely recommend it to other readers. Lindsey writes superb historical fiction and I definitely look forward to reading much more of her work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

My maternal grandmother worked at a hat factory in Luton, England many years ago. I was never told to much about her experiences there. I always wondered about it. So naturally I was curious and interested in reading this book.

I read the 1st book by Lindsey Hutchinson. I enjoyed it so much that when I saw the next one I had to read it. I enjoyed it just as much but probably more.

Each character was written with love. You really got to know them and care for them. You understood where they came from.

The main character, Ella, shares her grief and her happiness with us. She has a giving heart and touches everyone she meets (as well as the readers) with it. All except Darcie Newland.

I highly recommend this book as well as the first book of the series.

I received this book from Boldwood Books to give a review.

This is a wonderful story, and while it can easily be read as a standalone book, I really want to read the first in the series too, just to catch up with the early years of Ella Bancroft.
As a Midlander, I revel in books set in my neck of the woods, and those using the local dialect hold a special place on my bookshelf. Clearly, I wasn’t around during the period of this story but references to places I’m familiar with - like the Rag Market – take me back so effectively to my hometown.
Now, the story ...well, where to begin? It’s jam-packed with drama and yet is so full of heart and warmth that you can’t help but be drawn in. Ella and Ivy are co-owners of the hat shop Ivella, yet theirs is a trying relationship. Once rivals, they’ve now joined forces and their business has grown exponentially. It’s mainly down to Ella’s creativity, since Ivy’s designs are still stuck in bygone times, but nonetheless the two of them are enjoying a boom in business, and Ella is fast becoming known as the only place to buy a hat. Trouble is, this creates a little friction, and Ivy is a tad jealous. Ella manages to ignore the curt responses from Ivy and is hugely generous towards the older woman. Such is Ella’s character that she treats others well, but even she has noticed a change in Ivy, and when others in their workforce voice similar concerns, Ella seeks out advice to help Ivy. What follows is a heart-warming yet tragic foray into Ivy’s degenerating health as dementia sets in and causes her to forget things and get very frustrated with herself and others. The outcome is heartbreaking and so beautifully and sensitively handled by the author.
With all this on her plate (increased fame, rampant sales, and caring for Ivy) you might think romance would take a back seat. After all, Ella has suffered her fair share of loss already, and fear of being hurt again has prevented her from risking her heart. The romance subplot fully respects her fears and concerns yet sweetly blossoms towards the inevitable. Ella is apprehensive about moving on, and her visits to a “medium” to get permission from her dearly departed love to do so brings her back into contact with an old face, someone who bears Ella a grudge like no other. The desire for revenge is strong and action is imminent to threaten Ella’s livelihood.

It was so refreshing to read about women succeeding in their own businesses during those years when they were often treated like second-class citizens. I loved the mash-up of conflicts facing Ella, and how she handled them. There’s a lot of tension in the revenge subplot in particular and that had me racing through the book to see how it unfolded. However, I did feel that specific storyline fell a bit flat in its resolution and was a little too perfect an outcome. Nonetheless, I was totally pulled into Ella’s world, and once I’ve caught up with the first book in the series I hope there will be more to discover about The Hat Girl :)

The book begins five years after Ella Bancroft’s fiancé Harper died from tuberculosis. Ella works as a milliner in partnership with Ivy Gladwin, their combined shop being called Ivella. She lives in Silver Street in Walsall in 1906 - the time of King Edward VII. She is still grieving from the loss of her love, but after consulting clairvoyant Tilda Hunter, she feels relieved that she can receive messages from her fiancé through her. But is this the case or is she being conned by Tilda?

Just as she wonders if she will ever get over her fiance’s death, a fascinating man walks into the hat shop. Will Ella finally find love again? And why is Dulcie Newland back in Walsall? This won’t be good news for Ella…

This book follows on from The Hat Girl of Silver Street, but I hadn’t read that and easily followed this story, as anything you need to know is explained.

Ella is a really interesting character and I liked her straight away. I enjoyed the dynamic between Ella, Ivy and their three staff members in the shop (Katy, Thora and Freda) and I also found it interesting learning how hats were made in Edwardian times. The book gives an authentic feeling of the period, it was all well-described and I could easily visualise everything. I liked how Ella’s neighbour would just walk straight into her house! I thought Paul Sampson was a great character too, with the added interest of him being a black man back when they were a rarity in England.

Overall, this novel has a bit of everything – drama, romance, friendship, tension, danger, jealousy… Ooh, so much to get your teeth into! And all with the backdrop of 1900s England. I really enjoyed it, I wanted to keep reading and find out what was going to happen. I look forward to reading more by Lindsey Hutchinson in the future.

Lindsey Hutchinson’s writing shines in her latest gritty, dramatic and wholly satisfying new saga, The Hat Girl’s Heartbreak.

Harper Fortescue had been the love of milliner Ella Bancroft’s life. His death had hit her hard and despite the fact that he’s been gone for half a decade, Ella’s heart is still entwined with his. Although her friends encourage her to move on and to try to find love again, Ella is not interested and instead has focused all of her time and energy into her business, Ivella, which is the first port of call for the fashionable ladies of Edwardian Walsall. Ella is perfectly content with her life, however, an enemy from her past is out for revenge and they will stop at nothing until they’ve wreaked their terrible vengeance.

As Ella’s business continues to flourish and there is the possibility of a new love, it looks like at long last the milliner will have the happy ending she had long given up on. However, could the storm clouds gathering over Silver Street end up putting paid to Ella’s hopes for the future? Will the happiness she had never thought she’d experience again be cruelly snatched from her grasp at the eleventh hour? Or will the hat girl from Silver Street’s heart’s desire finally come true?

Lindsey Hutchinson’s captivating Edwardian saga is heart-wrenching, emotional, dramatic and packed with twists and turns that keep readers gripped and eagerly turning the pages. The Hat Girl’s Heartbreak is a terrific saga of triumph over adversity, second chances and starting over with a resilient, resourceful and inspirational heroine readers cannot help but root for.

Sure to go down a treat with Rosie Clarke and Mary Wood fans, Lindsey Hutchinson’s The Hat Girl’s Heartbreak is a must-read for saga aficionados everywhere.

Sweet hardworking Ella Bancroft’s story ended in heartbreak at the conclusion of the first book. So I was unsure of the title of this sequel, The Hat Girl's Heartbreak by Lindsey Hutchinson. I thought of all of Ella’s losses in book one, thinking she only has her shop and friends left, no true love and no family. Life has its ups and downs in this new addition but is improving. While Ella and her team must work diligently together success is awarded to them. New loves are also found. So perhaps an even better title would have been The Hat Girl Overcomes Heartbreak.

The character of Ella Bancroft is so well written that I felt as if she had become a close friend after the first book. I remember thinking that there must be more to Ella’s story. It just couldn’t end with one book. Ms. Hutchinson outdid herself writing the next part of Ella’s life. Kudos to the author.

It is difficult to say if this book is a stand-alone since I read book one, being able to see how far Ella has come and what losses she had experienced. With that in mind, I highly recommend reading book one too, The Hat Girl From Silver Street. What great books both are.

An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Hat Girl’s Heartbreak by Lindsey Hutchinson is a marvellous historical novel that I absolutely adored.
The action is set in 1906 in Walsall near the district of Caldmore (pronounced Karma) which I know very well from my three years spent at college there. It was easy for me to picture the action.
This is a tale with a moral showing how our actions and choices have consequences – both for good and for bad. We see that goodness is attractive, and that character will speak for itself.
A warm-hearted character offers help to those in need. Homes and livelihoods expand to give a warm welcome.
At a time when women were seen as second class citizens, it is good to see a group of women succeeding in business. Hard work and skillful hands are the order of the day.
Loss has ruled a life. Loss has kept a character living in fear of repetition. Loss has prevented life being lived to the full. It is time to step out of the shadows and take a risk on life again.
Friendship is important. When friends pull together, much can be achieved.
All the characters were well drawn, likable and realistic. They were easy to identify with and must be admired for their hard work and tenacity.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Hat Girl’s Heartbreak and look forward to much more by Lindsey Hutchinson.
I received a free copy from Rachel’s Random Resources for a blog tour. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Book Two in the series that carries on after the hat girl's from silver street. Ella Bancroft is still grieving for Harper Fortescue who she lost five years ago to tuberculosis. working as a milliner transforming Ivy Gladwin hat shop Ivella and living in silver street in Walsall she is working on new creations in the Edwardian era of 1906 the new head gear for ladies are now large and fussy but there's always calls for funeral and wedding hats she talks Ivy round to getting in more staff.
Ella's neighbour and friend Flossie Wooley tells her to go out and start having fun again it's all work and no play.
This book has taking me into another era of Ella's life as the business blooms she gets a good name in the hat trade.
Will she ever find love again?
So good and this story is just as enjoyable as book two. I loved reading it all, and it will pull at all readers heart strings right till the very end.

I was glued to The Hat Girl's Heartbreak - I have been hoping for a follow-up of The Hat Girl of Silver Street and here it is. Ella went into partnership with Ivy and created Ivella. Ella is still grieving for her late fiancé five years after he died, despite Flossie (her neighbour and good friend) and Ivy telling her is time to move on; Ivy is still creating her outrageous hats whilst getting more and more forgetful and angry. Ella persuades Ivy to hire some help in the shop and some milliners. Lurking in the background is the still very disgruntled, Dulcie Newland, who blames Ella for the breakdown of her engagement in book one. Can the two women work together in harmony with their new staff? Can Ella find happiness ands overcome her grief?

A fantastic novel which can be read as a standalone but you will get a better understanding of the characters and the back story of you read The Hat Girl of Silver Street first.

England 1906 It's so nice to read a story where a group of girls come together and completely support one another. The warmth jumps right off the page. Ella had a hard time of it but is trying to move on. She designs hats and has a partner in their own millenary shop. Lovely story as she goes on, with other girls coming into her life, the success that grows in the shop. She still ends up in danger but has quite a team to help her out. Excellent read right to the end. The kind of people you want to know and feel right at home with.

Ella and her friend Ivy own a beautiful hat shop and after hiring three more helpers, Ella notices her friend Ivy is becoming forgetful and worried for her friends health Ella seeks advice from a professional. What will become of Ivy?

Darcie also returns hell bent on seeking revenge on Ella as she believes Ella stole her fiance and ruined her life.

With all the makings of a beautiful series, will Ella find happiness and true love?

This is a truly magical book, It didn't grip me until chapter 3 but from there on it just got better and better and I could not put it down. With lovely characters, sense of community, heartbreak and love this story is skillfully told. I particularly felt a sense of friendship between all the characters except for Darcie.
This is one novel I'm glad I read!!

I read this as part of a book tour and I didn't research properly so I was surprised to find that this was the second in a series. Oops!
My mistake, but it was more than OK because I can now confirm that the novel can easily be read standalone, which is good for a new reader.
I think the book description actually gives you any relevant information you need too.

I liked that this one despite the time period it's set in featured female characters that are strong and independent.

As this is a new author to me I was pleased to find the writing style and pacing were both good, which is something that's important to me as a reader, and it allowed me to enjoy the story and read quickly.

This is the sequel to the hat girl of silver street.
Again such a lovely book by Lindsey, she knows how to radiate warmth into her book making the reader feel a part of it. I loved the characters and enjoyed meeting new ones.

A historical sage with drama that had me gasping for breath. I couldn't put it down and the pages whirred with every turn.
It was lovely seeing the friendship between Ella, Ivy, Kty, Thora, and Freda who work together in Ella and Ivy's hat shop, develop, and get an insight into hat making in 1906 Walsall.

Good read!

This is a good -sort of historical- story. It gives a glimpse of middle class England through the life of a hat maker who runs a business with her former competitor. The main character is a sweet person who takes care of everyone, the bad guy is a woman who seeks vengeance on her. Several characters are conveniently killed off! Was not very exciting but it was okay.

Brilliant, could not out this book down.

Another beautiful book by Lindsey Hutchinson. It was good to see some new characters, who quickly gelled together to form a group of loyal friends that Ella Bancroft deserved. It was great to see a happy ending, after a few ups and downs, twists and turns. I would love to see another book in this series , to follow on Ellas life and how the shop develops.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

An excellent volume in the story of Ella Bancroft and her ownership in a profitable hat-making business. As the story unfolds, much will change for Ella, and the hope for romance is strong after her loss of her fiancé, not to mention her dealings with the vengeful Darcie Newland. Excellent reading and recommended.
