Beth Anderson was pregnant and had nowhere to turn -- until handsome, and much older, lawyer David Matthews offered her a warm place to stay for the night, no strings attached. But a well-meaning matchmaker saw the spark between them and resolved to make Beth's visit more permanent.
He Needed Someone to Love
David was indeed attracted to his new houseguest, but thought their age difference too great. Even though Beth seemed wise beyond her years, David just couldn't get past the number. But kissing her was a temptation he could not resist -- and losing her was a chance he was not willing to take...!
Debbi Rawlins currently lives with her husband in Las Vegas, Nevada. A native of Hawaii, she married on Maui and has since lived in Cincinnati, Chicago, Tulsa, Houston, Detroit, and Durham, North Carolina during the past twenty years.
Now that she's had enough of the gypsy life, it'll take a crane, a bulldozer, and a forklift to get her out of her new home. Not that her friends would let her leave Las Vegas even if she wanted to. Debbi's home has become a retreat for writers from both coasts and her guest rooms are rarely empty.
Re-read for me. Original rating and thoughts still hold. _________________________________
3.5 to 4 stars.
Sweet May/December romance between a woman down on her luck and a wealthy attorney who has buried himself in work. I liked that the hero was kind, generous and giving in spite of devastating past betrayals. The heroine was strong in light of the fact that she was a victim of a smooth talking creep that stole all her money and left her pregnant and destitute.
These two were perfect for each other and the secondary characters were great.
So why not 5 stars? I don't know, something just felt slightly off between these two. I didn't quite walk away with the feeling of a grand passion. But it was still enjoyable and well written.
3 Stars ~ When David's workaholic father died suddenly of a heart attack, he became the head of the family law firm, determined to live up to his father's legacy. It wasn't unusual to be in the office at 8pm, in fact it was a norm for David to be there much later. What was unusual was an argument between a junior lawyer and an apparent girl friend, or rather former girl friend from what David is hearing. The very young woman is pleading with his employee for some of the money she'd leant to him, but was getting no where. It took a great deal of restraint for David not to break his own rule of never interfering in his employees' private lives, but he dearly wanted to plant his fist in the middle of the cad's arrogant face.
Beth hadn't wanted to chase Tom down, but after he'd maxed her credit card and spent all her savings, she'd had no choice. She'd just left him, only to discover she didn't have enough money to cover shelter for the night. Tom had changed so much in the past few months, and when she'd told him she was pregnant, he'd become belligerent to the point of verbal abuse. There was no way Beth was putting up with that, so she'd left. She knew she could make life very difficult for Tom, but all she wanted was what was hers, the money he taken. She hoped that some day, Tom might actually want to be a part of their child's life and so she bit her tongue and watched him jump in the elevator without her. And that's where David found her, sitting outside the bank of elevators waiting for the next one to open. Of course, there was only one thing for him to do, take her home to mother!
That's how Beth found herself as acting housekeeper / companion to David's mother, while their housekeeper was away on extended holiday. Her biggest project is to help David's mother plan his surprise 40th birthday party, a birthday David is rather sensitive about, particularly when it makes him feel ancient when faced with Beth's 25 year old youthfulness. The age gap is a torture for David as he fights an almost overwhelming attraction to her.
I really enjoyed Beth and David's love story. Like a moth to a flame, David just can't keep away from Beth. It was fun watching both of the fight their chemistry and wonderful when they finally stop fighting it. Ms. Rawlins creates characters that are so easy to care about and has a writing voice that draws you in.
Okay but sort of light. The characterization was not terribly in depth. It bothered me that the heroine never thought about the fact that she met this guy when she was about a month pregnant and she never even considered that maybe she shouldn't expect the nice guy she just met to be all in with taking care of her and her baby by a stranger. She never once stopped to wonder if maybe he wasn't all in about some other man's kid. I really think in most bran new relationships that would be a deal breaker, that a guy would think "you know what? I'm just not going there."
