My Professor

Rate this book
Young and naïve—those are his exact words.
Professor Barclay views me as a nuisance, a disruption of his otherwise obedient class and perfectly regimented life. His bad impression of me stems from a simple misunderstanding, and when that impression sours from bad to worse, he decides to make an example out of me in front of the entire class. Every other female student in that auditorium looks on, longing to trade places with me, wishing they were the object of his attention. It’s humiliating. I want nothing to do with him or the tension growing between us, but he feels inescapable.

Deep down, I know I have a crush on him. It’s a shameful feeling I refuse to give life to.
Not that it matters—nothing can come from it. Besides our mutual dislike for one another and the fact that he’s my professor, there’s an age gap that should be warning enough.
While we might cross the line once—the dark glance across a dimly lit bar…the metallic sound of the bathroom door locking behind us…his hand slowly sliding up my skirt—I know it’s a boundary I can’t break again.

Now, more than ever, he’s off-limits.
After four years apart, I’m a brand-new hire at his firm. I’ve convinced myself he won’t remember me. I’m safe here in the wolf’s den.
It’s funny, isn’t it? How easily we can delude ourselves if only we want something bad enough.

Nothing has changed.

That same friction roils between us. My gaze still flees from the chill of his glacier blue eyes. I try to stay out of his way, to keep my distance, but like always we feel inevitable. Fate seems to think I belong in the arms of my old professor, and raging against fate…well, that’s a battle we’re all bound to lose.

Ahhhh. Now I remember why I stopped reading this author. Cliche and cheesy to the max with so much unnessessary angst and drama.

Basically, here is what happens. Spoilers.

Heroine meets professor in his class. She acts like she's not there because he's hot- she totally is. Within a few days, he has to scold her twice for the dumbest reasons (cursing and someone showing her what is on their phone). The hero is unnecessarily harsh and makes her sit in the front of the classroom and everyone is all like what a lucky bish and her friend apparently sees the ✨chemistry✨ although I don't, but okay.

Heroine also just happens to wear a short dress the second day even though she knows she will have to sit in the front of the class, but then acts all shy and embarrassed about what she's wearing even though shes literally the one who put on the dress, but whatever. The third strike is when the heroine's friend creepily puts the heroine's and hero's face on a picture of Blake lively and Ryan Reynolds because comedy, I guess? Heroine had nothing to do with it, and yet takes the blame even though it was on the friend's laptop, so that makes sense I guess. Hero tells her to unenroll from his class.

We happen to find out that hero actually is secretly obsessed with her because hes seen her on a bench multiple times. He thought she was hot- cue the obsession. They wind up at the same bar with the heroine and her friends all dressed in slutty Britney Spears costumes because that's normal. Wonder where the shy and embarrased heroine went? Her personality changed so much she gave me a whiplash. He- sorta- fingers her in the bathroom out of nowhere (they've literally only had like 2 interactions), then she unenrolls and they both tell each other they regret it. He's literally only her professor for 10%.

So WHY TF IS THIS BOOK CALLED MY PROFESSOR WHEN HES LITERALLY ONLY HER PROFESSOR FOR LIKE 3 DAYS. WHY IS THIS MARKETED AS A TEACHER/STUDENT TROPE WHEN IT ONLY HAPPENS FOR 10% OF THE BOOK. low-key pissed me off seeing as it is being marketed as a student/teacher trope is the ONLY reason I read this.

Anyways🙄, 4 years later, heroine was just cheated on by her long time bf but she doesn't really give AF. Hero also was in a relationship with an ow. Heroine applies to work at the hero's business, she gets in, all that so-called ✨ chemistry ✨ comes back, and basically the rest of the book was repetitive back and forth rejections or leading on each other just to change their mind, and unnecessary drama to create angst.

This was terrible. Neither could make up their mind and I'm so confused because both were all over the place. One second the heroine would be like I just want him to Fck me but the next turns him down. One moment the hero is asking her to stay at his place but then tells her to sleep in the other room. They both throw out so many mixed signals. We do get a little steam such as a quick bj, but it was so boring seeing as they literally had no build up to it at all. Their relationship was probably one of the most confusing things I've read and it literally went absolutely nowhere. We never got any couple time or really just any *good* moments between them, as it was basically just them saying they want each other and acting like it for a second and then changing their mind the next second just to think about wanting each other until the very end of the book. I highly doubt the author took the time to flesh out these characters as neither were consistent and had 10 different personalities each.

We get some small things happening such as ow drama which was literally pointless. It wasn't bad but there was absolutely no reason for it. It was just a few instances of the hero's ex from their separation appearing to make the heroine jealous (so jealous she gets sick in the bathroom even though she literally just met him again and they were both in other relationships). We never got any closure on this either. Ow just popped in and out whenever and then conveniently disappeared. We also get some family drama, which again, no closure on.

We do get the heroine being clingy and needy. She's upset that her brothers never tried to meet her even if they aren't really her brothers, so she always stalks them basically and tries too hard to include herself. We also get mild elements of bdsm/praise kink which was super out of left field and made absolutely no sense to the story, and we get one short sex scene at the very end of the book. I think I liked maybe the last like 10% of the book, but it was annoying AF that after all that back and forth, they literally are only together for like 2 short chapters and then the book ends.

Overall thoughts- this is probably the "darkest" RS Grey book I've read which isn't really saying anything really. Usually her books are slow burn but we have good tension (well, not her recent books) but this book had zero build up. The entire book was pretty much just a flatline as it started with insta lust/love and we got literally nowhere until about 90% (book ends at 93%). It was completely back and forth, heroine making a fool of herself, calling the hero "Professor" even tho he was that only for 3 DAYS for her, 4 YEARS AGO. She also is constantly crying one second but then acting like a seductress the next second, there is some ow drama, family drama, no closure on anything, multiple personalities, and thats pretty much it. Everything and everyone that appeared was superficial and just there to add to the page count, otherwise entire conversations and pages could have been skipped. Bleh. Should have dnfed.

Safety:

No virgins/no manhoes

No cheating between MCs

Neither celibate during separation

Om drama- om cheated on heroine and broke up with her on screen, then later makes an appearance again in which the heroine looked pathetic imo

Ow drama- ow goes to heros office in which heroine sees and we get no other details about that except it made the heroine sick. Ow appears again at heroines "brothers" party with the hero, and made some underhanded comments. Ow is also mentioned multiple times and there is also a lot of jealousy from heroine over her

Both are only with each other after they meet again

Few details on their sexual history but nothing too descriptive

My Professor is the kind of romance I usually like, a bit risqué, a tad bit forbidden, and a whole lot of slow burn. It didn't go far enough in some aspects, but overall it was a fast and entertaining read for me.

A 3.5 star is actually quite good for me when it comes to this author. There have been plenty of her books I dnf'd in the past which makes this book already a success. :D

If you enjoy slow burn, with some slight pet vibes, you won't be disappointed.

THIS BOOK! I always find myself absolutely devouring every book Rachel releases, they’re my comfort reads, no matter which book it is, i’ll more than likely read it in one day! I couldn’t stop reading, this one was just incredibly hooking.

tropes included:
✧ student/teacher
✧ boss/employee
✧ work romance
✧ slow burn
✧ family drama
✧ age gap

”Our little Emilia likes it… a certain kind of way, and Owen was too vanilla.”

I was hanging onto every word, anticipating something. The slow burn really got to me this time, so many times I found myself leaning closer only to sigh out in a slight frustration because Emilia was only slightly stubborn.

Professor Barclay… I loved him, seriously obsessed with these two. I would’ve loved to see more of them in the Professor and Student era but, the story was intoxicating.

I love the game they played, it was exciting, fun, and extremely sexy and thrilling too. I’d love to see more of this flirty and spicy romance from R.S. Grey.

Sonya was such a fun friend, I almost wished to have more of her fun and vibrant personality around.

I am hoping we get a spin off with Emmett, (and alexander) especially with how it ended, i’m very intrigued by his character and especially romance with how much that one girl was mentioned from him.

Me and this book didn’t get along. I was expecting a steamy and angsty romance, but it left me annoyed and glad that it was over.

One of the main issues I had was that I wasn’t sold on the relationship between Emelia and Barclay. For me, there wasn’t really much chemistry. I found Barclay to be underwhelming and rude and Emelia to be juvenile and lackluster. I know that sounds a bit harsh, but I really didn’t like these two.

One of my main issues was beside her looks, I didn’t understand his attraction to Emelia. Let alone that their relationship would last. She refused to acknowledge her feelings for him but kept trying to bait him on his feelings for her. To add to that, he was accomplished in life, whereas Emelia was closed off and didn’t seem to have much ambition.

To keep this short, this wasn’t for me. If you’re a fan of her work and student/teacher relationships, then you might enjoy this better than I did.

***ARC***

- ok i don't know where to start talking about this book but here goes

- it was definitely not what I was expecting, I felt that the trope that was presented was not very well worked, it only happened there at the beginning of the book in a quick way and that was it, and the title of the book exactly implies that it will be a book teacher x student, I expected more.

- I didn't like the construction of the couple, I found it too rushed and at the same time too stopped. The first part shows the scene where they get together for the first time, but I found it so fast and even meaningless, but I realized it was still in the beginning and I hoped it would improve and evolve their relationship. But it wasn't the case, in most of the book and the chapters the characters don't have interaction, you see that both are feeling a "passion" for each other but you don't really understand where it comes from. I couldn't get attached to the couple, or feel their chemistry, exactly because I found it very shallow how everything was built, when they declared themselves at the end of the book I was like "oh okay", it wasn't something that made my heart race and I smiled ear to ear.

- The way the author's writing flows is great, I never had a problem with it, and even though I didn't like the story 100% I still couldn't stop reading because the writing kept me there

My Professor is standalone, contemporary romance by author R.S. Grey. Dual POV with a happy ending.
Tropes:
★ Teacher – student
★ Workplace romance
★ Age gap
★ Erotic (D/s)
★ Tortured heroine
★Slow burn

My thoughts:
➵ My Professor is a slow burn romance with an interesting push-pull dynamic and different from the rom-coms R.S. usually writes.

➵ I really liked Professor Jonathan Barclay, he’s smart, successful, self-assured, sexy and most of all he fell in love with Emilia since the first time he saw her sitting down on bench outside his office at Dartmouth.

➵ Emilia Mercier was lovely but also a bit closed off and lost. She excelled academically and professionally, but her love and personal life was in shambles mainly because she didn’t really know what she wanted. Which is perfectly normal for a young person.

However, it was the main point of contention between her and Jonathan and I felt that her lack of maturity was somewhat unsuitable for a relationship with an older man.

➵ Even though there wasn’t that much romance, but rather a lot of tension build up, I just couldn’t put their story down.

By the numbers review:
★ Hero: 👤👤👤👤
★ Heroine: 👤👤👤
★ Plot: 📚📚📚
★ World building: 🌎🌎🌎🌎
★ Romance: 💕💕💕
★ Sexiness: 🔥🔥🔥

Bit of a cop out this one, considering it combined two of my favourite tropes, student teacher and secret affair with the boss, it kind of wimped out on both with next to no taboo scenes at all. He was kind of a half hearted dom as well, but not really committed to it. It felt like the author changed her mind about where she was going with this. I loved the architecture references but as a romance and definitely as a taboo romance it didn’t work.

Complete story, available on ku.

As you read this review please know that it pains me to write: I thought I would love this book, but I didn't. To be honest, I think one of the biggest problems is that it was sold as a student/teacher trope when that part barely lasts 25%.
Now, don't get me wrong, I didn't HATE it, but I didn't love it either. I definitely am not the biggest Emelia fan, I felt bad for her regarding her family situation, but she was soooo annoying sometimes!!!! Jonathan saved the book for me after the 60% mark because he served some good boy obsessed moments that made me not hate him for what happened in the beginning as some of my friends did.
My favorite part was the side characters and I need RS Grey to write a book for one of them AT LEAST! The whole dynamic between them and Emelia was so interesting and I really hope we get to see more of them.
Another good thing is that, as always, the book is a very easy and light read. I would recommend it to people who like mutual pining and boy obsessed, just don't read it for the student/teacher trope.

🎓 he was only her professor for like 2 minutes, what a misleading title
🎓 girlie had about 18 different personalities, none of them good
🎓 didn't feel the chemistry, i felt like the first hookup came out of no where. and tbh by the end they still felt like strangers to me. like y'all fell in love? must've missed it

Well, this was honestly a very captivating read. The writing was easy to get into and Jonathan & Emelia's dynamics had me hooked! Jonathan was her professor for a course she was enrolled into. They had an age gap but somehow their relationship didn't feel taboo even when four years later, Emelia started to work in Jonathan's company as a new hire. Jonathan was was pretty captivated by her and I just wanted them to get together because all their little encounters always left me feeling frustrated. The plot was okay and there was a little bit of drama with Emilia's family but I loved her brothers. Alexander was easy to like but eventually Emett grew on me too. I hope Emmett & Lainey get their own book because I'd be here for it! Overall, it was a great read, I enjoyed it. R.S. Grey never disappoints when it comes to delivering fast paced, light hearted and fluffy books with great chemistry between the main characters that never fails to lift up my mood and out me out of my reading slump!

5 Fantastic Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Let me start my review by saying that Professor Jonathan Barclay is mine. I'm claiming him before anyone else. He's literally one of the sexiest heroes I've ever read this year 🤰🔥 I'm willing to go down on my knees for this man because he's so hot that it should be illegal 😫

Anyways, My Professor is hands down the best book I've ever read by R.S Grey. I thought no book by hers could defeat Arrogant Devil, but I was wrong. This book gave me a major book hangover, and now I can't stop thinking about Jonathan and Emelia. Like OMG?! This book is everything and more! I can't explain how obsessed I am with the story because it's so good and addicting. Ngl, when I read the blurb, I was expecting something different, but R.S Grey took me by surprise by giving me the unexpected. This book proves that sometimes you don't need to know the tropes to enjoy the story.

Jonathan and Emelia are such incredible characters. You guys already know how much in love I am with Jonathan. Whereas for Emelia, this woman is just precious. She's such a respectable character that you can't help but adore. I don't want to explain further about their characteristics and romance to avoid spoiler, but I can confirm that these two are perfect for each other. Their chemistry is just *chef kiss*.

Overall, R.S Grey has done an excellent job in delivering the story because everything was greatly written and well developed. The entire story is so entertaining yet sexy at the same time. The amount of buzz that Jonathan and Emelia gave me is insane. I can't stop smiling whenever I came across their interactions with each other. If you want to read a great professor x student & age gap trope, this book is for you. I can't recommend it enough.

P.S After reading chapter 33, I really want those two characters to have their own book (IYKYK). Their crumbs alone is enough to make me obsessed. Gonna cry myself to sleep if I don't get their book. I'm gonna manifest it until Rachel announces it 🤲

My Professor is a sharp turn from what you usually get from R.S. Grey and this is not a bad thing. While I’ve always loved her romantic comedies, this is a welcome change and proof she really can write anything. This book is forbidden, angsty, and steamy. There’s an age gap, professor/student and boss/employee tropes all in here. With the title, you assume the book will be about a professor and student but this trope is actually only about 25% of it. It then fast forwards 4 years to him being the boss and her his new employee. She does continue to call him professor throughout the book though. This one is super slow burn mostly due to their forbidden relationships. These two together were intense. They had so much tension and chemistry. It was palpable. All the characters, main and secondary, all brought so much to the book and were easy to like. I wouldn’t mind other books about the stepbrothers. There was no major drama, except for the forbidden aspect. It was so different than what R.S. Grey usually writes but she surpassed all my expectations here. I would definitely recommend it.

Devoured this book and really for the most part loved it. One thing though that was missing was the humour which I've come to love in her books and for that reason I found Emelia at times to be a bit dull and I don't really know how to put my finger on it but she didn't resonate with me as well as a lot of R.S. Grey's other h's.

I loved Professor Barclay though, he's the kind of asshole H that I dig.

Another point that also took a tiny bit of the shine off for me is that the supporting characters, mainly Emelia's friend really annoyed me. I didn't think Sonya was a great friend to be honest and so that bugged me that Emelia never really stood up for herself when she was horribly wronged by both Sonya and Barclay.

Overall though, it was a great slow burn book with heaps of sexy tension in it which I love.

I really enjoyed this book and I liked how this story read different compared to other R.S. Grey novels. This novel still contains all the elements that I love when reading a book written by this author but for some reason this book felt...different. Even though in no means was this a "dark romance", there was something about it that seemed more taboo than what this author typically publishes.

For those that are worried about this story involving a student/teacher relationship, I get it. However, still give this book a chance. You'll quickly see that this is not the case for the majority of the novel. I don't want to give anything away but I wouldn't want someone to put this book down strictly because they think it's a novel solely focused on a student/teacher relationship.

Talk about a slow burn when it comes to the romance! Let me tell you, the tension between these two characters could not have built up any more.

I really enjoyed this book and to me, I like how the author went outside their comfort zone compared to their other novels. The author may not particularly feel that way but this book definitely came across different compared to their other works.

**Thank you to R.S. Grey for sending me an e-ARC to read and review.**

“She’s as intoxicating now as she was then, when I’d study her through my office window. Someday, I’ll share the truth with her, the story of the first time I laid eyes on her. Love at first sight, I’ll proclaim. She’ll blush and try to downplay the significance, but I know the truth.
We were meant to be, Emelia.”

I am obsessed with this book, it got me hooked from the beginning till the end. I needed it to be longer! My professor is definitely my favorite book by R.S. Grey.
Both characters were lovable, their chemistry was undeniable and the plot was amazing! Every time Jonathan called Emelia “My little Emelia” my heart melted. Those two have my heart <3
I would love to read Alexander and Emmett’s story. Both of them are very interesting characters.

You know this might be my favorite book from this author 👀 mainly because it has man fall first and kinda man obsessed and me being a simple girl I adore the trope in every shape or form. Although, this was more an office boss/employee romance than teacher/student romance, in warning you. The part in college lasts less than 20%, but I still fell in love with this story and Jonathan and Emelia. The forbidden aspect of their romance, the pining, the slowburn on her side, the light angst was a delicious treat that I desperately needed. I also found Jonathan to be a great book boyfriend material. Yes, he's bossy and grumpy but he was also so attentive and sweet with the h. Speaking which... I liked Emelia from the start. She's the typical quiet, smart, good girl but with a sarcastic and funny side to her.
I also liked the side characters and I'm wondering if Emmett and Lainey might get a book in the future because I would be down for that. Just saying 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, if you want a lighthearted read with mutual pining and angst then you should pick this up!

I absolutely love My Professor!
*Age gap
*Student-Teacher
*Workplace romance
*Slow burn (but with off the charts heat and chemistry)
There is some angst, some humor, and all the feels!
Johnathan Barclay is obsessed from the first moment he lays eyes on Emelia Mercier.

“She was a contradiction, childlike with rosy cheeks and a clear complexion, and yet there seemed to be an old soul lurking beneath her winsome features…”

Professor Barclay fights the attraction but it’s a losing battle when they meet again a few years later when he is the boss and Emelia is the new employee.
There are some twists to the story as Emelia’s past comes to light. This was one of those books that kept me up way past my bedtime wanting to read to the end hoping for that HEA!
A favorite read and my new favorite R.S. Grey book!

Ok, I think I've read the majority of Rachel's books, and I can say that My Professor is hands down the hottest she's written to date.
🔥 chapter 7.
The student/professor and later employee/boss dynamics really brought the illicit factor, and combined with the personalities of Emelia and Jonathan (I feel like I should call him Professor Barclay 🔥), the whole thing really worked for me.
I usually avoid books that have these dynamics as I have found most of the ones I have read borderline icky and sleazy, however, I feel that R.S.Grey has done a phenomenal job defining the personalities of each character to make their pairing up inevitable and actually not cheap at all.
The pining and tension - delicious.
A couple of things that I wish were more deeply delved into:

To me, it feels that My Professor is quite different from R.S.Grey's usuals, and that she has attained new levels with this one.
A favorite for sure.
Thank you to R.S.Grey for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
----
Cover and blurb reveal today - this book sounds so good! Feels like pobably the hottest one that Rachel has written?
Oh also more angsty than usual?
Anyhoo, whatever it is, I'm buying!

My Professor by RS Grey was an enjoyable read! Though the book is advertised as student/professor trope, it’s really only for 20% of the book which then leads to a different dynamic between them. Jonathan and Emelia had great chemistry. Didnt expect this book to be slow burn but it was appreciated. I also thought the supporting characters were interesting and I wonder if RS Grey is going to write their books 👀.

DNF @ 45%. I really tried with this one, but I can't do it anymore.

**Spoilers**

I really hate both the characters and their "romance" makes me uncomfortable. It starts off with the whole Professor/Student thing, which I don't like, but could maybe overlook it because everyone's legal. It didn't have to be creepy, but it's like Grey went out of her way to MAKE it creepy. The guy repeatedly refers to the girl as a "child" or "kid." And in one scene he calls her that just moments before he puts his hand up her skirt in a bar bathroom. The girl even says something like, "this is harassment", but he knows she "likes" it, so they continue. Because that's how consent works... Then there's a time jump four years in the future where everyone are proper adults, but it still kept the creepy vibe.

The other thing that didn't work for me at all is the female lead's family sub-plot. Her mother died when she was a teenager and she has "family" that she doesn't talk to. She cyber-stalks - and then actually stalks - her brothers because she wants to be a family. But then you find out that they're not actually related. They were her mother's stepsons and the mother cheated on her husband and got pregnant with the main character. So then her mother's husband divorces her before the girl is even born - but for some convoluted reason agrees the baby should have his last name. So, not only does she not share any parents with her "brothers", but she's never even met them. It's one thing if she would've grown up with them - because blood doesn't make family - but she's literally had no contact with them her whole life, nor does she share any relation. Maybe this ends up making sense if you finish the book, but I don't care enough to find out.

3.5 stars

It was good but the title is a bit misleading, he was only her professor for a brief period in the beginning of the book.

I also hated that she continued to call him professor, it was just super cringey to me.
