Microwave dinners for one and evenings spent alone aren’t what Oliver Strachan imagines for himself when he relocates his veterinary practice to the village of Love’s Harbour. It’s a chance to mend his broken heart, but starting over is tough and Oliver feels more lost than ever.
For barista Joss Faraday, the excitement and promise of the city — any city, anywhere — is a call he can’t ignore. Joss’ heart is set on a bigger, better life away from the village that’s been his forever home. All he needs is a lucky break and a one-way ticket out of Love’s Harbour to make all his dreams come true.
A clumsy encounter between the new, brooding village vet and the sunny barista is the spark that sets their hearts alight. The two men couldn’t be more different, but the attraction is real. Questioning what they truly want from life, the answer’s simple: it’s each other.
But the past is not so easily left behind. Dark clouds are gathering on the horizon, forcing Oliver and Joss to make a choice: stand together against the storm, or let it rip them apart.
This had such a great meet-cute between a sunshiny 22-year-old with big dreams of an exciting life outside his small town, and the 38-year-old grumpy and heart-wounded Veterinary who’s moved to town, tired of big city life.
Joss and Oliver made for a really entertaining couple and story. Surrounded by gossiping grannies, BFFs with some straight-talking words, and some pretty cute animals (and their tiresome owners). The characters were vibrant and the story flowed nicely. Complete with some hurdles and a lovely grand gesture we get to the place we know they deserve to be. Swoon.
< ARC provided by GRR and this is my honest review >
This was a pretty good story with a good bunch of characters, I felt like it had potential to be so much better if it didn’t follow the same path as a lot of stories tend to go down but it was still worth the read.
Loved; • the characters • the dating ( no FWB,hook ups here! Woo!) • slow burn • small town • animals 🥰
Disliked • some parts felt like more telling than showing. Skimmed over lots of things I wanted to see on page. • 3rd act break up 🙄 • ending felt rushed, most likely due to including a third act break up 🙄 • the dramatic gesture to get back together was very short lived, needed more time showing them back together before jumping to the short epilogue.
I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Ali Ryecart but I have to admit that her sweeter stories are really my favorites. Animal Instinct is a wonderful sweet with heat romance between two men who seem to be complete opposites in what they want out of life but the reality turns out to be quite different.
Oliver and Joss are both looking for something different in their lives. Oliver isn’t sure what’s missing but Joss knows what he wants. He is determined to leave the small village he grew up in and move to a larger city. The attraction between Oliver and Joss was pretty immediate but the story is still a slow burn because it takes the two of them quite a while to form a relationship and let things heat up.
Oliver is the new veterinarian in town but he’s having trouble connecting with his patients. Joss wants to work with animals and working part-time for Oliver will help him get the experience he needs to qualify for a full-time job in a bigger city. They mesh so well together – Joss has a way with people that helps to smooth things with Oliver’s patients’ owners; they will listen to Joss because he knows them.
I couldn’t put this book down once I started reading it. Everything about it was wonderful, even the part where things go wrong. I knew that Ali Ryecart would set things right with Oliver and Joss and give these two an HEA – she always does, but she usually makes them work for it. 😊
I love epilogues, especially when they are set a few months or more in the future. I loved getting to know where Oliver and Joss were a year after their HEA.
A copy of this book was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
This was adorable. I'm very much emotionally invested in the residents of Love's Harbor now (okay, well, specific residents, I guess). Joss was absolutely lovely. About halfway through the book I started to worry, though. The only conflict I could come up with for the inevitable 70-80%-through turmoil was massive and/or willful miscommunication. I wasn't far off. And that annoyed me greatly. But.. it also made sense how it happened, so I'm not really disappointed at all. Will definitely be continuing on with this series.
This is a wonderful grumpy/sunshine age gap romance with just the right amount of angst to balance it out nicely. Oliver and Joss are at different stages in their life and want different things but it doesn’t take them long to understand that given the right circumstances, once held goals and ambitions can change. I was invested in these two from the very beginning, laughing and crying with them on the way to their HEA. Yes, they did have a major hurdle to overcome but a grand gesture gets them back on track and left my heart happy for them. There’s some great side characters, especially Gran, that kept me entertained and engaged and I’m looking forward to more in the series.
A very entertaining and very sweet romance story. The main characters were delightful. Gran was also wonderful. The story was easy to read in fact it was a pleasure to read. The storyline, the writing and all the characters jumped off the pages. A little drama to keep you on your toes with a lovely HeA to leave you smiling. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.
This was a really good grumpy/ sunshine age gap story. I absolutely fell in love with Oliver, Joss, and their friends. Joss' grandma was amazing as well. I loved the meet cute and how they both fit together perfectly. It was a well written book, and I'm really excited for book 2 of the series.
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily gave my honest review.
This is such a sweet story. If you like age gap or grumpy/sunshine stories then this is definitely for you. I couldn't help but get sucked into Joss & Oliver's story as they start out wanting different things only to get to the HEA they didn't know they wanted.
After Joss spills cake onto Oliver's lap, he goes to work part time for the veterinarian. They are instantly attracted but their lives seem to have different goals and places to be. Ali has given us a quaint village filled with lovely characters. Oliver is a flawed man who has been hurt. Joss has big dreams to leave the village. I think they both were easily influenced by others. I had a hard time seeing these characters together.I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my voluntary opinion.
A decent story with solid characters, this book just dragged at times with unnecessary descriptive detail of the settings and characters who were often in their heads. The third person point of view with limited dialogue seem to stop me from really connecting with the characters or believing their chemistry. Multiple chapters seem to stop abruptly, and each new chapter spent so much time setting the next scene that any flow of the book was often interrupted. This is my first book by this author, and maybe the style is just not my thing.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a lot of fun and I really appreciated how the slow burn was done. I just wish I enjoyed this one more than I did because I struggled getting into the book, but I still really appreciated it.
I received an arc of this book and this is my honest opinion
A good new series from Ali Ryecart, a slight spin off from Silver Fox series as Oliver is friends with James from Take My Breath Away. Animal Instincts has a grumpy/sunshine, hurt/comfort, age gap, romance taking place in a small, idyllic village on England's south coast. Oliver has escaped city life and the collapse of all that entailed to set up his dream vet practice in Love Harbour but whilst business is going well, his personal life not so much. Joss has always wished for the opposite, wanting to escape Love Harbour and set up life in a city whilst learning to be an animal assistant. Of course, plans always change. These two definitely have a clumsy meet cute with some dropped cake leaving quite the impression but they quickly become more of a fixture in each others lives as Joss starts working for the handsome older vet. Their friendship slowly develops as Joss helps Oliver to get out into the world again and their attraction quietly simmers in the background for a while. They match up really well except for the small thing of Joss wanting to leave..... maybe. Romance quickly blossoms and all is well in their world until some unwanted guests from the pasts turn up causing some overthinking and assumptions to disrupt what they have. I love how thing get sorted and end up for the two of them, meaningful to them both. There's a great cast of characters for this small village, Gran especially having an awesome personality and her love for Joss shines through. There's a few possibilities for future couples too so I'm looking forward to those. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
I don't read other reviews before I read a book, I did a long time ago, but got burnt and I swore I would never again. I will, however, read them after I've read a book but before I write mine. I like to see if other people feel the same as I do.
I came across a review that said something, and a had a big fat bell going ding ding DING in my head and she nailed exactly how I felt.
Ms Ryecart writes sweeter books so beautifully! And this is so freaking sweet, it really is.
I loved how very early on, both men felt something for each other, but it does take time for that to develop into more. I loved being made to wait, I really do.
I loved that Oliver wanted what Joss, but knew he would be leaving. He messes up big time, though, in that area. He does, however, redeem himself so very beautifully!
I loved Joss grandma, and what she does for the ladies of the village. Made me laugh out loud a time or three, and I rarely react verbally when reading. I loved all the nosiness of the villagers, I really did. I understood why growing up in that Joss wanted to leave but I liked that everyone knew everyone else.
Loved that James and Perry pop up (from Take My Breath Away) so it was great to catch up with them.
I loved this book, I really did. And as such, it can only get...
Animal Instincts is another winner by this author. I was captivated by these characters from the first page to the last. I've always enjoyed the grumpy/sunshine trope, and the age-gap trope is becoming a favorite of mine due, in no small part, to this author's work. They don't dwell on the age difference, which I like. The secondary characters support the storyline, and I was happy to see a couple of characters from a previous book. The storyline is interesting, well thought out, and has a flow that moves the story along nicely. The romance kept my attention, and I fought alongside Joss and Oliver as they navigated through the more emotional scenes. There isn't a tremendous amount of angst, but what there is gave me all the mixed-up, turned-around feels you get in situations like that. That's some good stuff. I love it when an author can pull me in so completely. I cried several times, but I laughed too. I experienced anger and joy, and most of the emotions you get when someone you love finds their someone. The spicy times are filled with passion and caring, and I'm confident and satisfied with their HEA. Oliver and Joss are a beautiful couple, and I hope to see more of them in the future. I look forward to more from this author.
Microwave dinners for one and evenings spent alone aren’t what Vetinarian Oliver Strachan imagines for himself when he relocates to Love’s Harbour. This was a sweet story but I did find the ease that Oliver let his past poison him against his present was very disappointing and not well explained. I loved Joss so sweet and determined. Yet again this was another book that just needed better communication to avoid issues. Easy to read and understand. This was an MM story with mature content
I enjoyed this sweet romance between Joss and Oliver. Oliver has had some life experience in the city, having established a successful vet practice and a seemingly successful relationship. After some pretty significant issues come to light, he decides to make changes and move his veterinary practice to a small town. Joss, on the other hand, has always lived in a small town where everyone knows everything about everyone and he cannot wait to leave it for the city. These two come together over an injured dog and establish a tentative friendship which leads to more.
The story is sweet with some heat. The main characters and side characters were interesting and fun to read. And of course there were cute animals. I understood where each character was coming from. Oliver comes to care for Jess and doesn't want to stand in the way of his dreams. Joss cares for Oliver, but struggles with finding where his dreams truly are. Should he stay and follow his heart, or leave and follow his dreams?
4.5 stars. I enjoyed this book so much. It’s full of great British humo(u)r and awkwardness, wit, chemistry and lots of talk about ambition. Small town romances are some of my favorite stories to read. Love’s Harbour was quaint and nosy and so much fun. Even though a bit rude to their vets. Joss was delightful. He was confident, friendly and hilarious. And for wanting to get out of his town, he fit right in and knew and got along with the people. I loved his relationship with Gran, and I just plain loved Gran. What a kook. Oliver was a wounded, new comer and I enjoyed seeing him heal and come back to himself. To live for himself in the present and move on from the past. Even when that past came knocking, he stood his ground. Even though he did let some of it get under his skin(Spencer is a twat), he still stood up for himself. Even though he almost let it ruin the best thing that had ever happened to him, there’s nothing a big romantic gesture can’t fix and he gets his happily ever after with Joss.
I really enjoyed this book. The story of Oliver and Joss is filled with dreams, love, heartbreak and trying again. Oliver is a vet who has moved to the country from London to live his dream as a small town vet. Joss is a young man with dreams of moving to the big city to find his life there. They will meet at a time when Oliver is still healing from past heartbreak but soon he will find himself taking a chance. Joss’s dreams of big city life start to change the more time he spends with Oliver. All is well until Oliver’s past rears it’s ugly head and fills him with doubt. It will be a small bump in the road but time and good friends will make them see that everything they want is right where they are.
I read an ARC copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
I am a huge fan of the perfect epilogue in a story and this one has a great one. The epilogue, however, needs a great story as a lead in to completely fulfill its potential and this story definitely fits the bill. We have the grumpy/sunshine trope mixed with a wonderful small village setting. The sense of place is very strong here and you can understand both why Oliver has chosen to move here to rebuild his life and his veterinary practice. You can also understand, however, why Joss as a young man would dream of leaving his village and going off to the city. Clearly when these two meet and start to develop feelings for each other, something is going to have to give for them to stay together. The path to the HEA isn't easy but it all makes perfect sense and the ending is totally satisfying - followed by the lovely epilogue. This is a series I definitely will be reading more of.
Unpack your bags, and stay awhile. Oliver didn't expect to spend his life alone, eating solitary meals when he moved his Vet practice to Love's Harbor. Josh, a upbeat optimistic barista dreams of leaving Love's Harbor. He wants to be anywhere but here. They have a clumsy fun meeting that hits the interest buttons. They are absolutely 180 different, but they fit and compliment a need in each other. They make each other better. There is personal baggage and a history they must work through that challenges them. Josh and Oliver, are really nice guys. Great story, excellent friends. Love's Harbor seems like a wonderful place with amazing villagers. Will Oliver and Josh be able to find balance and work through their challenges? Will Josh stay? Nicely done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
So very very mundane. There wasn't anything realistically keeping Oliver and Joss from each other aside from Oliver's reluctance to start a relationship with another person and the age gap between them, but those are not nearly enough to sustain 300+ pages. I needed something more emotional for them to work over and to use the power of their affection to overcome, but we're 120+ pages in and there's hardly been any real development with regards to the romance. Yes, they're clearly attracted to one another and they now work with each other, but the lack of romantic tension and conflict really made this kind of a bore.
Joss' desire to leave for the city should've been played up more with a deadline or something. Oliver's loneliness needed to be a bigger issue. There needed to be something here to fill the pages other than both MCs thinking the other's hot.
I found this one to be a very cute, lighter and fun romance! I would call it more young, fun and bouncy verses older, unsure and more reserved! Oliver is the veterinary who moved to town to start a new life after a bad relationship. His meet Clumsy cute with Joss was perfect! Then I love how they meet again! Oliver and Joss are both just so likable you get sucked in wanting them both to find a new happiness together. It is more of a slow burn but there is good chemistry from the start! Oliver's friends Perry and James were hilarious. "I'm not suggesting entanglements, who wants anymore of those? I'm thinking more..... Dalliance" We also get great side characters in Declan and Gran from Joss's side! I read an arc, and I am definitely looking forward to more love in Love's Harbour!
Grumpy Oliver and sunshiney Joss work together beautifully— their chemistry is vibrant and alive and full of sweetness and heat in ways that let each guy’s personality show through in each of their interactions. I will admit here that I liked Joss (who wouldn’t, he’s a sweetheart) but I loved Oliver— I can’t quite explain why, but his “over it already” vibe and good heart just sealed the deal for me: even when he makes mistakes, he’s still sympathetic and interesting in spite of himself. If you’re a fan of age gap romances, small town settings, and interesting (in good and bad ways) supporting characters, plus animals (Oliver’s a vet), as well as truly satisfying HEAs, this book could be a good fit for you.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
It is hard when you grow up wanting to be anywhere but the place that you are living to believe that staying there might be a good thing. Josh wants out of his small town. He wants to move to the big city. And then he meets Oliver. The new veterinarian in town who has moved his practice to Love's Harbour in hopes of healing his broken heart and starting over. But new starts are not always easy and Oliver is a bit of a grump in comparison with Josh who is a sunny guy on his own mission. They are actually a good match for one another. It is in meeting and being drawn to one another that they come to understand that the most important thing for each of them is not where you are but who you are with. I received an ARC from GRR for an honest review.
What a way to meet your happy ever after..... Despite working in the coffee shop, Joss has always dreamed of working in a vets as an assistance to both vet and human parent of the fur/feathered/scaled babies that come in. To his surprise the new vet Oliver ticks all his boxes and seems to have eyes for him also. Oliver has some reservations to starting something with Joss. Yes hes younger, but he wants to leave Love Harbor, to find his spot in the big bad world in a city somewhere. Oliver left that, after being used and hurt within his former relationship and vet practise. He just cant stay away from Joss, nor Joss from him.
My heart absolutely broke for Oliver in this one. It’s a good read, with a little dose of angst, but nothing too bad. These characters got me quickly invested. Joss has only ever wanted one thing: to escape his small town. Nothing will stop him. But as he soon learns, sometimes it isn’t where or what but who you focus on that matters. Oliver is a broken man trying to start over, who keeps getting it thrown into his face how much he is holding Joss back. They have stuff to work out, but this ends in a very satisfying HEA. I would have liked to see the past get what was coming to it but it was a good story nevertheless.
Animal instincts is a nearly no angst, slow burning romance between Joos, a young barista and Oliver, a vet.
The story takes place in a small town with a lot of gossip, nice surroundings, ice places and a lot of friends. Oliver moved from London to the small town and meets Joss. They get together but the old stuff from London is following Oliver and gets him in thinking.
I love this book as it is a cute romance with a lot of great side characters we‘ll hopefully meet again in the next books of this series. Especially gran and her friends were a lot to laugh.
Animal Instincts is the first book in a series called Love’s Harbour. Seriously fun to read! Joss is a barista and cannot wait to leave the small village for a more exciting bigger city. Oliver is a veterinarian who has moved his practice to the village of Love’s Harbour. They are so different; Joss is sunshine and Oliver is the grump. They have an immediate attraction, but it takes them awhile to get together, slow burn! When they finally get together, heat and steam make serious fire between them! Overall, this was a fantastic story. I literally couldn’t put it down once I started it. Well written with that perfect pacing that will hook you and leave you smiling!
This is a cute story set in a small town where everybody knows everybody’s business. Joss is currently a barista but his dream is to be a vet assistant in a large city. Oliver is a vet who has recently moved to Joss’s small town, leaving city life behind. They notice each other but don’t really connect until Joss seeks emergency treatment for his dog. Joss begins working with Oliver several days a week to gain experience. Their love story is a bit of a slow burn with a little angst thrown in. In the end, Oliver steps up and makes a grand gesture to get Joss back. There is a sweet happy ending that shows they really are perfect for each other.
