Crochet your own shawls, wraps, capelets and more from this collection of stylish patterns
Shawls are a simple yet colourful way to liven up your wardrobe - they are comforting and cosy, but they can also be stylish and delicate. Modern Crocheted Shawls and Wraps has 35 patterns ranging from a simple, slip-on crochet wrap, to a large open-work pattern shawl. There are lace-patterned shawls to throw over your shoulders at a party, or capelets to add a layer of warmth to your outfit on chilly days. Granny hexagons and stars are used to make giant rectangular wraps, while star stitch and popcorn stitch add texture and weight. There's even a 'stash-buster' pattern with a mix-and-match border designed to use up your colourful leftover yarns. Many of the shawls would make excellent gifts - particularly as 'prayer shawls' - and of course, one size fits all! This collection of patterns from Laura Strutt features her usual up-to-date style and modern pallette of brights, variegated yarns, and neutrals, while many of the patterns use the increasingly popular super-chunky and variegated yarns. First Published in 2016, this is a new edition.
This books has great patterns. In fact I think I like most of them and will be trying out a few. Have shown this book to people I have been helping with crochet and there are several that are really not difficult at all. Love the colors and the variety. Must get this book for myself because the one I have now belongs to the library. Anyone who crochets will love this.
Beautiful patterns for multiple skill levels. I liked nearly all of the patterns, and know how to approach each pattern because of the skill level markers. There is a wide variety of blankets and shawls to make. I only wished that some of the patterns were better demonstrated and shown in the preview pictures.
The shawls are wonderful and creative. Most of the instructions are excellent. However, some of them are a bit sloppy.
She writes "miss" instead of "skip" when talking about skipping stitches. She will give a specific number of chains for the foundation row, add one, and tell you to do a stitch instead of including that additional chain in the original number.
For the Splash of Orange shawl I would recommend practicing the stitch before attempting the pattern. It is like no triangle stitch I am aware of.
For the By the Lake shawl the number of rows is incorrect. The shaw is 39 rows. The instructions are for rows 1 - 5 with rows 3 - 5 repeated 33 times for a total of 38 rows. The instructions say 39 rows. Row 40 is not mentioned and the pattern picks up at row 41 for the buttonhole band. Had me very confused.
The author is from the UK and that could count for the differences.
Great patterns & I have received compliments on the shawl I made based on the paintbox palette pattern. I miss seeing a chart for the patterns however, since that often elucidates written instructions in case of confusion; that is why one star is lacking. Library loan: I might buy this book in the future; I'd like to try more of the designs.
