Callahan Syndicate #2

Bitter Betrayal

Rate this book
For a chance at freedom, she'll have to commit the ultimate betrayal.

Libby Giordano has lived her life in a gilded cage, her value lying in being seen and not heard. But when she learns of her father’s plans to traffic women through Philadelphia, she can’t keep quiet. Betraying her father to the only people who can stop him could paint a lethal target on her back.

Brogan Callahan does his best work behind a computer or with a gun in his hand, neither of which prepare him for Libby Giordano’s big brown eyes or desperate plea for help. The third son in a centuries old criminal dynasty, he’s no stranger to a damsel in distress, but this one tugs at him like a siren’s call.

When Libby discovers her sister has been swept up in her father’s sex trafficking ring, she’ll do everything in her power to set her sister free. Even if it means helping the Callahans destroy the only family she’s ever known.

3.5/5⭐️ tropes: rival mafia families, protective MMC, forced proximity.

This is a re-read from a couple of years ago for me. I remembered a scene from the beginning and have been searching for the book, so happy I figured it out, was driving me crazy.

Libby is the daughter of a head of an Italian mafia don. Caged by her families manipulative and controlling ways, she knows to stay in line or else. But when she learns her family is involved in the trade of women, she knows she needs to do something. So Libby goes to a rival mafia family - run by brothers- to see if they can get involved and stop her father. One of those brothers is the tech genius Brogan. Broody and quiet, he doesn’t trust Libby or the situation much at all, until her information turns out to be true. But then Libby’s life gets put in danger as her family figures out she betrayed them - so they leave her half dead at Brogan’s family front gate. With nowhere to go, Libby needs to figure out her life and how to get her younger sister and herself away. But there is a quick and burning attraction with Brogan, who is committed to burning the whole world down around what her family has done.

Drama, action, tears, and some sappy insta-love. It was a good read, a little dragged out, yet still missing some depth from the storyline.

2.5 stars. I really wanted to rate this higher but that ending…New to me author. I can tell she is a young writer and I see a lot of potential so I look forward to reading more. I started on book 2 and I think that’s ok. It may have “spoiled” book 1 but I don’t think it really matters.
This book was somewhat (ok a lot) predictable and had an extremely weak ending. What happened to the bad guy???The final scene felt like an after thought. We had all this build up and… absolutely nothing. Obviously he was killed (right?) but that wasn’t even mentioned! It was COMPLETELY glossed over for the good guy finding the girl. We didn’t get the violent revenge I wanted and expected. All we got was squealing tires, gunfire, and questions. We don’t even know if it was the MMC who killed the bad guy! Damn, that is a basic wrap up to a book people! Especially when most of the book was Brogan vowing to kill the bad guy. But did he? No one knows b/c the author forgot to mention that crucial part. Maybe she forgot to add the final chapter from Brogan’s POV? That must have been it.
This book was a lot of talk and not much action. Rocky flow between secondary characters and unanswered questions. Its a mafia book but mafia light IMO.

Trope: mafia

It was okay. I fell for a TikTok and decided to give the book a read. I just couldn’t get into the characters. The FMC was fine, but for whatever reason, I wasn’t into their romance.

it’s a good book

Here’s the thing…I don’t love books that allude to a persons history or why they may act or feel a certain way, but they don’t give the details. The story itself is great! I loved the characters Libby and Brogan. I love them together, but…I want to know who Samantha was. How did she play a role in Brogan’s life. There’s a tiny glimpse at that piece of history, I want the full story. I want to feel his despair. I want to know specifically what happened and how he dealt with the aftermath. I need all the details of Libby’s life too, what lead her to the decision she made? I just feel like so much was skimmed over. Same with the ending. One second Libby’s passing out, the next she’s making family dinner. Where’s the turmoil? Where’s the fight for her life? Where the protective Brogan as she’s recovering? Where’s the scene where she sees her sister? It’s in the details. I need the details.

Bitter Betrayal revolves around Brogan Callahan and Libby Giordano. Libby seeks out the Callahan family after learning her own father is trafficking women. Betraying her family could cost her her life but she is determined to do the right thing. But things become complicated when Brogan and Libby can't seem to keep away from one another.
_________________________________________

I wasn't impressed with the first Callahan novel which I thoroughly explained in that review. I don't know why I decided to read this one, I think I liked the way Brogan was portrayed in the first book. Either way, I'm glad I read this one.

I still think this series would do better in first person versus third person. But I will say I feel like the author had a better handle on it this time around. It felt more personal. Brogan and Libby had actual personalities and I didn't think the conflict in their relationship was as trivial.

But I do have some issues. In the first book, without giving any spoilers, an important person dies. Which I get, it adds to the story and heightens emotions. It's sad but a result of the lifestyle these people choose. So I was sad but also understood how we got there. But I don't like when it becomes a trope. The author did the exact same thing in this one and the character was phenomenal. They shouldn't have been killed. And the way that they were killed? That doesn't seem believable to me. I'm hoping we don't keep killing off people just to "do it". It sort of ruined the ending for me.

I did enjoy the romance and spice in this. I think the plot was way more interesting than the first one. But I do want to compliment the author on her female characters. I loved how Evie was a professional thief and Libby was basically doing business behind her father's back. These women are badass.

I will read the next one and I'm looking forward to it, I think the series could still be good. I don't know if I would revisit this a ton but compared to the last one? This was exceptional.

Dumped at the Gates of the Enemy

I kept seeing this book being talked about on social media so I went ahead and picked it up. I really liked the idea of enemies to lovers, but more than that the whole her being dumped at the gates of her enemy.
So our heroine is Libby, who is kind of awesome. It was nice that she was in her later twenties (in a lot of these mafia books they are very young women so it was nice to have a little bit of age and maturity there). She’s grown up basically as a prisoner under the thumb of a really bad mafia boss. She sees bad things going on around her and she starts reaching out to another organized crime family to let them know about threats against them and eventually about her father’s plans to go into human trafficking. Of course this ends up badly for her. I really liked Libby. She has a real sense of where she is in the world, she isn’t naive, she knows the risks to her, she knows she is risking it all. She loves her sister so much, which comes through throughout the book, and I really just enjoyed her.
Brogan is our hero, he’s a bit surprising to be honest. He’s described as almost kind of a meathead physique, but he’s also incredibly smart, taught himself to basically be an electronic genius and he also has a lot of really soft spots. And protector instinct which it great. Mostly I like how he is with Libby. How much he wants to help her right from the beginning, how he is constantly trying to do the right thing by her, even when he gets it wrong.
Their relationship is really nice to read in the middle of a plot of chaos between two families who are going to war. The mafia plot line is also really good I thought, it kept my interest and I enjoyed seeing the conclusion to it all. I’m also interested to see where things go in the future book.

Bitter Betrayal is the second book in the Callahan Syndicate Series. Although I have not read the first book I didn’t feel I needed to to follow along with this story.

It has a slight enemies-to-lovers trope, but it’s thin. Either way, it doesn’t take away from the story.

The smut level of this book was pretty tame, however very well written. I have to thank the author for top-notch wording that did not make me cringe. Icky romance terms have been creeping up a lot lately, but this was well done in the smutty scene department.

I felt as though this could have had a prologue with the FMC Libby and her sister to help with the backstory and cement her relationship with her family. The lack of backstory made Libby’s decisions a little less impactful.

Libby, as the FMC was good. She may be slightly naïve because of her sheltered upbringing and lacked a bit of self-confidence, but that didn’t stop her from being brave and growing throughout the book. The character development here was solid.

I enjoyed the other characters as well that seem to appear in the first novel, so I may go back and read the first one and will probably read the third book coming out in August 2022.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read.

So book two in this series is a lot better than the first book!

Firstly, this is definitely more of a mafia romance. We got a lot more actual mafia business, and our romance was definitely more of an enemies to lovers as our FMC is the daughter of the head of the Italian mafia. I loved all the action in the plot line, it kept me again guessing what would happen and how things would play out.

I also enjoyed this romance more. It was a slower build, there was angst, and hesitation, but a lot of want and need. We got more spice in this book than the last and it was great. The characters were a little more developed, and I felt like they each had more depth.

I wish the final sequence played out a little longer and more detailed, again I feel like it wrapped up kinda quickly. And I'm super angry about the character that died! Like WHY! I bawled during the moment and the aftermath. This author apparently likes killing people off and now I'm terrified for the next book.

I'm really anxious to learn and see more of Aiden and find out what his deal is! He seems like such a prick but I know there has to be more to the story.

I was super excited to read this since I loved all the characters so much in Sweet Revenge and Meaghan definitely didn't disappoint!

Even though Libby is part of a rival mafia family (the Italians), she risks her own life to seek the assistance of the Callahans when she finds out her dad and his partner are trafficking women. They reluctantly agree to help, which would mean a turf war between the Italian and the Irish syndicates. Brogan takes the task to heart and is much more protective of Libby than the others. As their plans progress, their attraction grows and they find out things about themselves, each other, and their families that draw them together.

So many things that I enjoyed about the first book carry over into this one - a great writing style, just the right amount of violence and blood, a good amount of spice, and my favorite thing from the first book: a strong bond between the female characters. All in all a great read and I am stoked for the next one!

⭐️ 2.5 stars. Let me start by saying that I didn’t read the first book. However, this book gave enough context that I knew the major plot points and I didn’t feel the need to start from the beginning.

I didn’t dislike this book but I’ve read better. The parts that really soured it for me in terms of rating were Finn’s death and the major gloss over the ending. This book alluded to a death very similar to Finn’s, in the first, which makes me question, is the author going to continue to kill of someone just to make the readers sad? Once is a good plot twist but after that it’s no longer creative or surprising so Finn’s death felt like a cheap plot twist. That and the fact that the whole big ending happens but is somehow almost completely glossed over and wrapped up in a very superficial sappy scene is what determined the low rating.

My rating system:
5 stars - Absolutely loved it! I would definitely read again anytime!
4 stars - Really liked it! Will most likely read again sometime.
3 stars - Liked it. Glad I read it but probably won't read again.
2 stars - Didn't like it. Glad I'm done with the book and I'll never read it again.
1 star - Very rare rating. Absolutely hated the book. Will never read again and I'll probably burn any copies I come across.

This book made me cry which means the author did a good job and made me care about the characters! I love all the different personalities and how they work together and sometimes clash, just like a real family. Each book is about a specific couple but the overall plot running through the books is really good! I am so excited to read the next book and get Aiden's story and see what else happens!

Great read.
I do love a mafiaish story that isn't about arranged marriages and smut.
This story had a great unique plot. It's around Libby who is the daughter of a mafia boss who betrays him by telling the rival syndicate about women trafficking 👏 which puts her in a bad position with the mafia and falls in the Callahans laps for help. Of course, 1 brother will fall for her because we need some romance 😋.
The relationship with Brogan and Libby is really nice. He isn't your usual dominant rough mc he has layers.
This is the 2nd book in the Callahan syndicate series. I read it out of order as I saw some quotes, and it piqued my interest. I didn't feel I missed anything from not reading book 1 it only made me want to read all of them.
I was upset with one part I won't spoil.
Def recommend this author, and the book was well edited.

Brogan & Libby 🖤

I came across a teaser for this book on the author’s TikTok and immediately grabbed a copy and I’m so happy I did. This book was outstanding! An absolute page turner with an awesome storyline, great characters, and was very well written. I loved Libby and Brogan from the first moment I met each of them, but them together couldn’t have been more perfect. The chemistry between them is electric from the beginning and only gets more explosive with time. I truly loved how he always trusted her and never doubted her throughout everything. And most importantly was always there to catch her, to never let her fall.🖤🖤

I. Love. BROGAN!! Amazing follow up to Sweet Revenge. Each book is a stand alone in the series but you will see the couple from book 1 and have some spoilers for that book if you read them out of order!

Brogan and Libby's relationship is so great, I love watching them come together and learn to trust each other throughout the book. The spice is fabulous, the consent and respect is hot AF, and like book one the strong female friendship seen in this book is fantastic!

Another great read if you like something between a dark romance and a standard romantic suspense. It really hits that sweet spot for me with some morally grey characters but strong personal codes and love!!

Intense & Hot

Libby is trying to do the right thing she knows her dad is no good and she wants to save the girls he’s trafficking but she doesn’t know how to do it on her own. She seeks out the Callaghan’s for help and she doesn’t realize by doing so she & her sister are now endanger. Brogan is taking back by Libby’s strength and beauty but he’s a bit damaged and not sure if he open his heart again but she has this pull on him and he is all to eager to fill her up. This is an intense read in spots and you will cry but it is worth the journey. I can’t wait until Book 3 comes out. I hope the wait won’t be too long. Happy Reading!

As the second installment of The Callahan Syndicate series, this hits the ground running from the very start.

When Libby learns that her father, the leader of the Italian mafia may be trafficking girls, she reaches out to the only people who can help. Her family's rivals, the Callahans. Once they agree to help her, things begin to get worse before they get better. While battling through the unknown and trying to take out those involved in the trafficking, Libby and Brogan Callahan find themselves falling for each other. Will it all work out in the end or will your heart be left on the floor? You'll need to read to find out!

Great follow-up to Book 1

After finding Book 1 unnecessarily wordy, I was a little hesitant about reading Book 2. However, I was rewarded with a much tighter read. I very much enjoyed this story and hooray! for a pear-shaped heroine! 🍐 😃 It’s nice to have a FMC shaped like me, and be appreciated for it by the MMC, every now and then.

Now that I have read two of these books, I do have a word of caution. The author is not afraid to kill off characters. It makes it more realistic, in my opinion, but it also kinda sucks. But, so far there have been HEAs, even if somewhat bittersweet.

Looking forward to Aiden’s story and finding out why he is so mean and grumpy.

I loved reading about the Mafia themed romance between Brogan and Libby, it was the perfect fit in Meaghan’s second book for this series. As an outcast from her family which just happens to be a rival family to Brogan’s, the book captures their stories falling in love and trying to protect those they care for. Once again I loved Meaghan’s writing style, she makes these books such an easy read. I’m rating 4 stars out of 5 because I felt there was too much spice and I needed more storyline. Maybe just a “me” thing, but I wanted more of the plot. Overall highly recommend!

These Book Tok thirst traps are really killing me. This particular Book Tok thirst trap I’m talking about is the scene where the FMC shows up at the MMC‘s driveway bloody, and he catches her, and it’s supposed to be so romantic. But this happens within the first three chapters of the book! There is not enough story built for me to care about any of the characters. They also feel very one dimensional so far, and not what I was hoping for when I was bamboozled into thinking this was an enemies to lovers. They’re not enemies. Libby doesn’t have enough power to be Brogan’s enemy. They just happened to be from different mafia families.

This book had a good start but it kind of dwindled down after she got dropped off at the Callahan’s estate. I felt like this book focused more on the action than the romance which is fine but not my cup of tea. The ending was disappointing to me, I read it and I kept scrolling because I couldn’t believe that was it. I was expecting a big take down of DiMarco and a great rescue of Teresa but all I got was gunshots and tire sounds. It would’ve been nice if there was an epilogue at least. This is first book I read from the series and I won’t be reading the others.

Definitely more of a 2.5 ⭐️ than 3. I thought this book had a lot more character development and the author really tried to make you care about the characters this time around. Brogan and Libby however weren’t my favorite of this series I still prefer Declan and Evie.

The mobster theme was better done in this book than the first in the series with the Irish Syndicate and Italian Mafia going to war with each other which added a lot more action. I love that the author always has a second trope this one being probably one of my favorites enemies to lovers.

I thought this book set up Aidan’s story really well and I cannot wait to read his story next!

DNF’d at 50%

This is only the second book I’ve ever DNF’d it’s not something I make a habit of as I like to persevere where I can and give stories the benefit of the doubt.

Honestly I don’t mind a third person story if it’s well done. However this is a prime example of where is just does not work. It was disjointed and very patchy. Barely any story made by 50% of the way through the book. Really bland character and none of the relationships were believable. Just really disappointed.

i really enjoyed the majority of this book but i thought the ending was quite underwhelming like there was no revenge we didn’t get to see the death of the bad guy or like saving her sister, i think that would have been a more climactic ending and then maybe the final chapter like it felt like there was at least a chapter missing. because we were at the airport and then they’re home and cooking (and it wasn’t like there was a time jump either)

An enjoyable quick read. A good premise. The end felt rushed as the whole book was let's take down the bad guy, and then it came to it, and it's a blur of screeching tyres and gun shots. Who kills him? Don't know! How did it play out? don't know! What exactly happened to the FMC? What was her injury? Don't know! Also, the death of the MMC's brother felt a bit brushed over losing its impact on the story.

Will probably read more of this series

Didn't realize til a good bit in that this was book 2 but seems to be able to be read mostly Standalone. Will be reading book 1 after to get the before story for Declan and Evies story.

Brohan is adorable. The muscles and tattoo's hide the brains this man has. And his drive to protect Libby is perfection. My heart broke a bit when he swore to find her sister.

The ending seemed a bit rushed to me, they find Libby, save her, and the sister, in like three pages.

As a fan of Book 1, I was a bit concerned going into this book given the trigger warnings (please check them out on the author's website before reading). However, Meaghan Pierce did another fabulous job handling serious issues with care and creating three-dimensional characters.

Brogan and Libby's story, while turbulent, is worth the ride!

Liked this one better than Declan and Evie's story. I really like Libby and that she fought so hard for what was right. Even if it cost her everything. The way Aiden treated her pissed me off. I don't even know why Declan puts up with him. I have a feeling he may betray them. And Borgan is so perfect for Libby. I'm so glad he stood up for her and they got together.

Cute Easy Read

Loved the characters! It has action and spice. I would have been a little more upset with Declan willing to throw her to the wolves but still enjoyable. No spanking or making get feel like shit. And she was a fighter and wasn’t too poor me. Looking into other books by their author.
