Something hides in the deepest part of the cornfields, a dark magic that should not be tampered with.
But, of course, someone does.
The mice Magnus, Ignatius, and Pestilence are blind, but they can see things no one else can. They knew when the servant girl came into the curio shop, and they knew they had so much to show her. Especially because she was already exposed to the terrors of the night, and she was about to experience more.
The scarecrows stalk the fields at night, enchanted with a powerful magic to guard something even more powerful: A mystical being with the ability to grant wishes.
Through visions of the past, present, and future, the three soothsayer mice tell the story of how a poor servant girl finds her way into a vast labyrinth and makes a wish to change her life...a wish that results in a grand transformation she never asked for: The very monster she herself used to fear. She is forced to learn to adjust in a new game of survival as outside forces to hunt her down are on the rise.
There is so much more that happened before she got there, and much more that is to come. She learns to prepare, to act, and to strategize, especially with the foes that first presented themselves as friends.
This mashup of a Nursery Rhyme with a classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale pays homage to their origins in a story of new twists and ominous foretelling.

Thank you Goodreads for sending me this book! Unfortunately it was only a 2 star for me and that is being generous. It started out with potential but lost me at about the 30% mark. Finally at 77% I gave up and skipped to the last chapter to see how it ended.

Welcome, readers, to a masterpiece of a book that I recently discovered. “Mice” by Jackie Sonnenberg is one of the few books I've read recently that spoke to my soul.
Something lurks deep in the cornfields, a dark magic that should not be tampered with.
Of course, someone will. Magnus, Ignatius, and Pestilence are blind mice, but they can see things that no one else can. When the servant girl entered the curio shop, they knew they had so much to show her. Especially since she had already been subjected to nighttime terrors and was about to be subjected to more.
At night, the scarecrows stalk the fields, enchanted with a powerful magic to protect something even more powerful: a mystical being with the ability to grant wishes. The three soothsayer mice tell the story of how a poor servant girl finds her way into a vast labyrinth and makes a wish to change her life...a wish that results in a grand transformation she never asked for: the very monster she once feared. She is forced to learn to adapt in a new game of survival as outside forces seeking her out increase.
There was so much more that happened before she arrived, and so much more is yet to come. She learns to plan, act, and strategize, especially when dealing with foes who first appear as friends. To know more about this fantastic story go and get your copies fast, I’m strongly recommending this to everyone.

Mice by Jackie Sonnenberg is a nightmare take on Cinderellas fairy tale. Aschenputtel, a 16 year old girl , is purchased by a horrible woman with two equally horrible daughters, and taken to their home to continue her life of subservience. While completing errands for her mistress, Aschenputtel comes into possession of three magic mice, which uproot her entire world.

A story of magic, revenge, and an unending hunger, Mice twists everything you thought you knew about Cinderella into a bloody bow. Power, pain, and the quest for more, and yet more leads many astray as this story wanders to its bloody conclusion.

**Some grammatical errors(noticeable enough to pull me from the story), super slow pacing for such a short book, repetitive in some places to the point of skimming. Not a bad story, but it felt underdone in some spots and overdone in others.**

*Goodreads First Reads advanced copy*

When I started reading this story I was not sure what to expect. I found a fresh take on the Cinderella fairy tale. I also noticed hints of Snow White and The Three Blind Mice as I continued. It slipped into a darker version, probably more closely resembling the original cautionary Brother's Grimm fairy tales. The pacing of the story, as well as the various reveals, were masterfully crafted. I felt the only slight distraction to the story was the slipping back and forth in time. I found that a bit hard to keep track of. Still, I would highly recommend Mice to anyone who enjoys reading fairy tales, especially those with a more sinister outcome. They will not be disappointed.

I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. In general, I'm not a huge fan of horror, but wanted to try something new. That being said, I had a hard time putting this down. What begins as a fractured version of Cinderella turns into something completely unexpected. I will never look at scarecrows the same way again.

For the love of all that is holy, pass on this book. It starts off interesting enough, then takes a long, drawn out, turn for the worse. It's definitely not my typical genre of what I read but it sounded good. I was wrong. Slow read, and surprisingly, too much detail. This story could have been told in half the pages if it weren't for repeating detail over & over. Read at your own risk.
