"Solar Wind" is a collection of pictures produced between 1974 and 1980. During this time Peter Jones took an interest in science fiction and fantasy, using available imagery to explore many of his own interests, including visual dynamics, fashion, logo design, and anatomical invention.
Peter Andrew Jones is a contemporary British artist and illustrator born into the relative poverty of post-war Britain in Islington, North London in 1951, son of the late Reginald and Catherine Jones. His father was a skilled engineer, and Peter himself has always had a fascination with engineering, a fact which undoubtedly had an influence on the hundreds of imaginative paintings for which he became internationally famous, particularly in the genres of aviation, science fiction and fantasy.
This is was a short but very enjoyable read - the book dates back years to when I was first getting in to collection Paper Tiger books. In fact this was bought from a seaside bookshop called Jarrolds (had to smile the original receipt was still inside the cover).
But why go back and read it - well Peter Jones illustrated a number of Larry Niven's books and for me most crucially he illustrated the first books I found from the Tales of Know Space and yes I have just read them - not really a huge leap there then.
But the thing that for me made this book so enjoyable is the style of Peter Jones - it seems now rather dated and surreal nothing like the style of book covers of today. But rather than draw attention to these as faults it celebrated for me an era where I was still exploring and growing and to be honest it was amazing. So for me if anything this inspired me to hunt out more of those books because I can remember them so vividly and yes they do relate to the stories printed within.
While in the middle of reading Arthur C. Clarke's The Fountains of Paradise I felt the need to look thru' some SF art of the period. This one just blew me away. The usual spaceships and aliens that was such a pleasure to look at. Two books that tell me this is why you like your old SF. HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING OR VIEWING.
