After circling around each other for so long, are they ready to take it to the next level?

Mason can admit that he’s had the hots for rough and gruff Gage Hillcrest for well over a year now. Only Gage is bossy and overbearing as all hell. Not to mention that Gage is a closed book and Mason doesn’t know anything about the man.

Gage has wanted smart mouthed and sexy, Mason Taylor since he first laid eyes on him. But the two of them are like oil and water. Mason is wild. And well, Gage is not. Mason also has a big house and more money than he’d ever need while Gage is drowning in debt.

When Pegasus is asked to help the local police find a missing undercover officer, the unit leaps in with all hands on deck. Lives collide when they roll out on the mission and Mason finds out that Gage needs aid taking care of his family. Of course, Mason jumps in to help.

As the pair grow closer, life gets more complicated when Gage’s son goes missing. With loved ones in jeopardy, Pegasus will do everything in their power to find the little boy and recover the missing undercover cop before it’s too late.

Because in the end, it’s all about family and taking care of those in need.

Mason and Gage are a case of total opposite attracting. They don't even want to like each other, much less fall in love, but neither can avoid the pull. Mason doesn't want a commitment, and Gage can't afford anything with his family life. However, both men realize they can't fight it, and they can't stop it. I was surprised that Mason caved in so fast, but I guess for him it was the ultimate solution to take care of Gage's issues, so off he goes.

Both guys are very likeable characters, their chemistry too off a bit fast but then, it really wasn't instant attraction. It would have been nice to have had more background information on both Mason and Gage. It was obvious that their troubled pasts should have left more issues and deeper scars than we were told. While there is not a lot of overlapping from the first book, but the busy, turbulent world of the Justice Force sometimes made it difficult to remember who everyone was and why something that happened obviously mattered.

I really like this author and look forward to getting the next book in the series.

Best one so far

Definitely the best one out of all the books I've read so far.

It does still use a couple of tired tropes, the crappy ex-wife being the main one, but she wasn't turned into a caricature thankfully, and she ended up being an accidental casualty in the other element of the narrative.

There's a bunch of cute kids, some great family moments and lots of the usual brotherhood which makes these interconnected series' worth sticking with.

This time I was also pleased that the main suspense part turned out to be more along the lines of your bog standard criminals instead of some of the more "suspend disbelief" in earlier works.

I liked both Gage and Mason a lot and I really liked them together. They've been dancing around each other for quite a few books now in the background so it was great to get their romance.

I'm very much looking forward to Oliver and Parker next.

I'm sick of these books that have to put men together by making all women one-dimensional uber maternal figures or evil abusers. And the toxic masculinity in this is horrible- you have our "heroes" being abusive to medical staff because they're just so protective and loving- ugh.

I think we all can agree that our lives could use a Jenny and three really is a magical number. The found family that Pegasus has gives me all the good feels. I love how even when they bicker, you can still feel the love and respect they have for one another. “You look like… forever. When I first saw you. When I first touched your hand, that’s the only thing I could think of.” Mason and Gage (and Gage’s family) left me with the biggest smile on my face. These two spark for a number of reasons but they also felt like what I think a hug would of you could read one. I kinda just want to squish both of them forever, especially if forever includes visits to Mason’s home. Loved the action, loved the suspense and can’t wait for more thrills with Operation Justice Force.

Mason and Gage

This single dad romance was enjoyable as Mason and Gage got over themselves to actually give a relationship a try with one another. You could see the chemistry they had and that they fought hard to ignore it not only in the first book but this book as well. It was nice to see them wrapped up in a bow with their little family in tow.

I have been waiting for Mason's story for awhile.

Mason and Gage have been snipping at each other through this series and the previous series Code of Honor. I was never sure why they got on each other but you knew there was chemistry. Here we finally get to find out the why.

I was surprised with Gage's back story but it was sweet. With Mason, though his reason for not wanting a relationship felt quite weak and then he went from no way to all in so fast it made it unbelievable at times.

I think there could have been a bit more back and forth before Mason caved instead of Mason saying no, then one kiss and he's ready for the HEA.

I am excited that Parker and Oliver are next but I feel like I am dying waiting for Ace's and Jacob's story.

Opposites attract, Blk Ops adventure, chemistry and hot men, heartwarming romance.

Rating: 4🌈

I throughly enjoyed Lethal, the first book in this series. It had a sweet twist as far as the main characters, which directly affected their dynamics and relationship.

It was also my introduction to this world of undercover ops, twin semiautonomous agencies, and their operatives who all seem to have a sort of connection between themselves.

The operatives are all ex-professional military personnel, fierce , intelligent and highly effective in their areas of expertise.

Pegasus, the agency here is more undercover and newly established.

That’s the background. Gage and Mason Taylor are our main characters and POVs in Rough. We watched them bicker and circle each other in Lethal, their chemistry obvious. It’s a opposites attract story.

Mason Taylor is old rich money. He’s a known entity and that’s been used as part of his cover in the past. Gage’s past, other than career, isn’t as clear.

This is one of my issues with the series that starts with this story. I’ll table it for now.

Knightley does a excellent job creating interesting, connectable characters, outfitting them with emotionally laden issues, and then pulling it altogether in a fast-paced , suspenseful espionage thriller.

Gage’s family issues are heartbreaking and the character that acts as a bridge to bring them into Mason’s home is everything.

But this is where the suspension of belief sets in. Pegasus is a semiautonomous organization. High security with all that entails. Including high security clearances. Background checks on every operative to ensure they don’t have anything that would make them a security risk. Like a ex with addiction issues, money problems, and an employee with living quarters in risky area because of money flow issues.

Uh no. Red flags. Nope. Not hired.

And this is a narrative problem that carries over into the following stories.

There’s a few other things that’s problematic but that’s such a glaring example of a major issue that I’ll leave that out there.

Does that balance out a hot romance and terrific characters? Along with a fast paced storyline? Well, if this type of book is your jam, probably so.

Opposites attract, Blk Ops adventure, chemistry and hot men, heartwarming romance.

But a little eye roll as well.

I enjoyed it for what it was. And recommending it for that too.

These two have been dancing around each other so I was super excited to see how this unfolds. I wasn’t expecting Gage’s family life but absolutely loved it! I’m going to be slightly controversial here I often stay away from books with young children in them 😬. Yes I know but sometimes they write the children as l so Bratty and disrespectful and terrible and I just personally can’t do it. The more I read MM the more things I discover I love in the this genre! Things are just done differently and in a way that I love. I haven’t met a child character that Reese has written that I haven’t fallen in love with and I’m all here for second generations the way Reese writes them! Fingers crossed for Travis in the future just saying 😜

Such a great series BUT there are actually 4 series with 19 books out so far (more to come). All the MC's are interconnected within their series and they all get their HEA. There are pop-up appearances of the MC's from the other series regularly. They could probably be read as stand-alone, you would just miss a lot of the nuances of the secondary characters, who have had their own story or will have their own story. I love them all!

I read this series, the Code Of Honor series and Operation Justice Force. Next is the Cobalt series. So many books, so many great MC's and so many entertaining stories.

DNF at 35% so take my review with a grain of salt.

Rough is one of those kinds of books where similarly to the first one, if you like slightly toxic alpha male scenarios, this would be up your alley. The entire book so far was generally unlikeable for me.

Storyline: the story takes way too long to get into the main plot unlike the first book which gets straight into it. A large part of the initial section was mainly about mason and gage having snippy fights with each other over the most shallow things. Literally, how shallow could they honestly be (in one part, mason was super hurt and snapped at gage just because he preemptively turned down a donut). Being snippy with each other is a fun read if done well but honestly, they fight over such shallow things it’s difficult to get into it.

Characters: by the time I reached 25%, I realized with frightening clarity that I would not like Jacob or mason AT ALL. They are both incredible brats, especially Jacob. He’s literally a “perfect” character, being super skilled at everything including firearms, swords and hacking. He hires a random guy for the bar despite it being not his job just because he wants to take in strays. Literally, this is a team of agents who put their lives on the line regularly and there’s this 21 year old who is arrogant enough to keep superseding his boss as though he knows everything. He’s super proud at undermining his boss by going on missions without informing anyone and when mason ENDORSES this, I realized I can’t like mason either. Mason is another hot mess. The way he gets continually pissed at gage for the smallest of shallowest of reasons is infuriating. Gage wants to separate his private and professional life but mason gets pissed when gage refuses to tell him where he lives which makes me so annoyed. Is it weird that in such a dangerous career, you want to god damn keep it separate? Jesus mason. And if that wasn’t enough, he goes BEHIND gage’s back by asking Jacob, the resident perfect arrogant do it all to give him gages address which honestly in itself a huge ethical problem.
But of course mason is too perfect so the situation resolves itself. Travis, gage’s brother, who apparently is traumatized socially and cannot and don’t want to interact with peers his age is totally fine speaking with a complete stranger (mason) and declaring he likes him immediately. Mason is gages soul mate, so any problem gage has can be magically solved by mason. Any social circumstance surrounding gage will automatically bend to mason.

When Mason left Jacob at the club where the danger might possibly be because he was desperate to go to sneakily go to Gage’s house, there was a moment Ace got super pissed at Mason for leaving Jacob alone as a new agent on the field (honestly Ace didn’t even let Jacob be an agent, Jacob declared himself old enough to make his own decisions. Does he even realize that this is a workplace and not some family home?). I thought that this was good as it serves a good character point for Mason to see how arrogant and bratty he is and to learn some humility but to my UTTER shock, Gage defended him and justified his actions by saying that Jacob is a grown man who wants to be in the field (do all these people realize that Ace is their boss and that Jacob is a 21 YEAR OLD with no respect for authority?). Somehow, the whole thing got turned around and mason is the one backing Ace into a corner by saying that he loves Jacob and is unfairly being harsh to him. This was a missed opportunity to me. When you protect your characters from all criticism (especially by spouting pseudo moral crap), you prevent unlikeable characters from growing and developing their own character. Now mason gets to retain his bratiness as well as Jacob and the earth can keep spinning because god forbid, you don’t allow gay men to be sassy and arrogant.

Lastly, I have an issue with the characterization of Tina. As I did not finish reading the book, I might potentially be wrong about this. Tina is a bitter woman who doesn’t care about her child. She’s written to be mean and spiteful which is a weird trope I see sometimes in these gay romances in how women are written. But the thing is, I get the impression that she’s bitter because gage married her, had a child with her and THEN left her because he came out. While the way she treats the child isn’t right, it’s not weird for women who were lied to this way and had their lives torn like this to become resentful and mean. I feel as though the writing of the characters towards Tina should have been more sympathetic.

I loved this story as Mason and Gage finally stopped their dance around each other and Gage realised that Mason's wealth was not as important as the love between them. The way that the personal life of Gage intersected with the case was clever. Easy to feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

One thing that didn't make sense to me is the fact that his niece didn't mention his son even once for the duration of them staying in the beach house. 🤦🏻‍♀️
I personally don't have children of my own but... Have you been around kids?! They CONSTANTLY talk. About their closest frends and family especially. They ask to leave something for their brother/sister, to bring/hide/put aside something, "and is that for X mommy" and so on. Someone from the household missing? Especially another child, it will be absolutely mention no matter what. Being in another house? Poos and a beach? New experience? The "missing" child will be constantly mentioned. This is the "creature license" that bugged me the most. I get that we needed it to have the drama but still... I will not even mention the super secret organization having unlimited resources and very tied close friendships but he never asked anyone to check up on his kid during the "mom" week. And i will not even wonder why in such a closely knitted circle his family is a secret. Or why is his secrecy more important than the family's safety. If that was me, and i had that many resources i will be belly crawling to have them safer and protected.

A Reese Knightly book never disappoints, loves the story with strong alpha men!

I have never been disappointed with a story series so far. I enjoyed the beautiful love between two people who have the most respect, brotherhood and watch each other sixth when on an operation. Operation Justice Force depicts the love and challenges between Gage and Mason. Gage was struggling trying to be a father figure for his son, niece and young brother. He was trying to get sole custody of his son but the cost was really hurting him financially. He had an instant attraction to Mason, but Mason was rich and he didn’t want Mason to think he only wanted him for his money. He tried to fight the attraction but Mason wasn’t giving up. Things started coming out in the open when Mason showed up at Gage house to give him a ride back to the job. Mason didn’t like where Gage was staying and didn’t want to leave the kids there in the neighborhood,so he called his housekeeper to pick them up and take them to his house. This is the beginning of really seeing where their relationship was going. Can’t wait for the next book. I recommend reading all the series it is worth reading.

🤔🤔

Going into this I really expected to be wooed, not quite…
Reese has a whole universe to her series. This one didn’t click as well as most.
The beginning drags a little mainly because the way Mason & Gage are portrayed is awkward and doesn’t jibe right with the characters.
Mason is super rich, has 1 ex who stole from him, and therefore doesn’t trust anyone and refuses to consider another relationship. Gage is taking care of his family and financially failing, he’s doesn’t want pity or a hand out and keeps his family and custody battle secret. But 1 weird push and poof in blink Mason is bringing Gage & family into his home and Gage is excepting the help.. which is IMHO is how it should be if not for the fact that it is the total opposite of the set up to their perspectives. Gage ex wife- her story makes Gage really unsympathetic. Once they come together, there’s a complete 360. The chase to find a missing cop, team interaction, Mason & Gage exploring their attraction & working together. The banter and camaraderie is so much fun. When everything comes together it’s all that and a bag of chips

Rough is the second book in the interconnected series, Operation Justice Force by Reese Knightly who suddenly became my new go to author. I've been reading her entire catalogue and I'm hooked!

The best part is how interconnected all of the characters are. She writes it seamlessly but as I was reading I was impressed by how incredible Knightly's world building is. Once you start getting know all of the characters, it's so fun going from one book to the next. She drops subtle hints about the upcoming couple in her books but not in an overbearing way.

I had a hard time deciding if Mason and Gage were friends to lovers or enemies to lovers so I marked it as both. You'll see.

I loved this couple and the writing. This is my favorite in this series so far. One of my favorites of hers in general. I was so interested in reading Mason and Gage's story and I was not disappointed!

I love the way Gage accepts Mason's help and doesn't do the typical "I don't want pity" character trait that's so annoying. I loved that Mason went from wanting to be alone to wanting to be with Gage. They are so adorable.

Once again, AMAZING!!!

Contains: coworkers, poor/rich, violence, family value, family drama, mission to find love... or um the cop.

Reese strikes again, right on target.
The balance between romance and action is its greatest strength. Normally, I love very descriptive action scenes and unfortunately, I would have loved to have this last scene. But I still have hope to find this scene in the next book??? Please *sad cat eyes*

Despite the last non-descript scene, the mystery is on point, they follow the tracks to lead to the missing cop. In the meantime, there is the problem of the custody of Gage's son. Although no one knows about Gage's family, they are all there when needed without question. Suspicious.

Dive into this book and discover romantic scenes, family scenes, friendship scenes and most of all action at will. I love it as always!!! The next book can't come soon enough.

Another hit

Rough is the second Book in the Operation Justice Force seriesby Reese Knightley. This story Specifically centers around Mason and Gage. Mason comes from old money and is tired of being used for his looks and money. Gage is the exact opposite. He is fighting to get by, trying to raise three Kids while working for Pegasus. From the start they are attracted to one another but both keep pushing the other away.
This is a great follow up to book one. Its a wonderful combination of romance and action. it leaves you wanting to read more.
My only complaint is there is a shoot out scene that is spoken of after the fact that we never get to "See". With how well the author does action I would have liked to have read that scene as an actual chapter not an after thought.
I would recommend this book to those who love action and romance, however reading the first book before would be in your best intrest.

So, this book was really good. Even if their relationship was fast paced, Mason and Gage made the magic happen through the book.

Gage has a lot of problems in his life. He has to take care of three kids, his ex is absolutely irresponsible and his life if falling apart while he tries to keep the kids fed and get his son custody.

Mason on the other hand, has the perfect life in the books, but he is afraid of relationships because people usually just wants him because of his looks or his money.

It was easier to the author just follow the path of misunderstandings, but both men really surprised me on how even when their insecurities reach the surface they always talked to each other and OMG how I love when the couple do that.

I really recommend this book if you want to enjoy a mature couple who talk with each other. This book does not have a plot full of complexity, but it is enough to make me love it.

I don’t know why I keep doing this

Is this some sort of self torture? I don’t even know. Will I read the rest? Yeah. I will. I’ll think less of myself for it but I’ll read them.

*spoilers*

What the actual sweet California is with these books going from a high five to a proposal in a week. I get insta love but this is like insta love on speed. Why. Someone tell me why. Mason and Gage snipe at each other because they’re just so over the heels in love. Mason consistently says he doesn’t want forever. Gage says he can’t tell the team his issues and he doesn’t want charity. They stare at each other misty eyed and that’s that. Gage is moved in with Mason and Mason is Papa when he first meets Gages son. Who is three. He meets him, can’t say Mason, gage says well HOW ABOUT PAPA?
How about no.

Go away I have to read the next one fml.

3.5* rounded up

Mason and Gage are a case of opposite attracts. They don't want to like each other but can't avoid the pull. Mason doesn't want committment, Gage can't afford it with his family life. But both realise they can't stop it.

I found Mason caved in too fast but then for him it's the ultimate solution to take care of Gage's issues and off he goes. Both guys are likeable characters, their chemistry a bit fast but then, it's not an instant attraction, it just took it's time.

I would have loved more background for both Mason and Gage, both their pasts should have left more issues/scars than described.

While there is not a lot of overlapping between the series, the interconnecting world makes it sometimes difficult to remember who's who.

sizzling action and romance twisted together

Reese does it again with her blend of sweet romance and high octane action. Gage and Mason stumble around each other but eventually realize that a bond has been formed.

Their courtship dance is adorable to watch as they try to take down the enemies and find time for each other.

I love the characters and the joking around that goes on. They are truly a family.
This book was a lot of fun to read and it felt like catching up with good friends.

If you want lots of action (of the romantic kind as well) I recommend you pick up this book.

Well this is a disappointment after reading Lethal - book 1 !

I thought I was getting an Opposites attract book with lots of snapping at each other but having each other's back and being forced to be partners. That was what I was looking forward to, sadly this dream did not come through 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️.

Gage was an interesting character, taking care of this brother, son and niece. I wish we got more time with them towards the end of the book.

Mason was bland and just there.

Them jumping into a relationship happened waaaay to soon for my tastes and the I LOVE YOU was unbelievable.

Still loving Ace and Jacob, they are really so cute to read 😍😍😍😍

I liked this couple better than the first but the story and overall writing is pretty simplistic. These guys go from insufferable to eachother in one chapter to love you in the next. Mason was supposedly a take em and leave em guy bc ppl usually got close to him for his money but Gage accepting his money and help in half a second was fine 😃Sure, Gage is the good guy but they didn't know eachother well enough for Mason not to be suspicious. The cast of characters is ok, aside from Jacob who comes across like a toddler throwing tantrums. His dads overprotectiveness further makes his character child like. Everyone in the team is supposedly gorgeous😃

First off, where can I get me a Jenny? That woman was amazing!! Now to the couple...I really enjoyed these two. I did find it a little odd that a group of covert operatives didn't know all that much about one of their own teammates. Gage and Mason have been dancing around each other for quite a while but finally got stuck together and Mason sees how Gage lives. It's freaking sad. He steps in, of course, and fixes everything with only a little push back from Gage. I was surprised at that. Great story, wonderful characters, another winner!!

Enjoyed this book.

It took me a while to get started on this book. Not sure why I held off for so long. It bad when you can't remember all the other players in the story. Almost needed to Go back and read the prior story. This should be a good series for Audible if the right narrator is used. These two kind of circled each other in the beginning. But got their heads out of their back sides and got it together. Had to deal with a couple of issues but worked their way through it.

This one hit just the right notes for me!

I’m doing a binge read of this author’s whole interconnected universe and for some reason this one really touched a nerve and hit just the right spot. I really liked Mason from an earlier book so I was glad to see him get his HEA. And I totally wanted Gage to catch a break and get his life straightened out and get his HEA also.

I’m really enjoying the binge read and all these different personalities getting together and finding their HEAs. This next book ought to be interesting.

I love all of her books and this was just as wonderful. I was choked up whenever Gage was with his son and niece and younger brother and Mason was so wonderful as he struggled with finding someone who would love him for himself and not for his money and fame. They were so good together and I admit that I would not have hesitated to kill Tina for what she did. I love how Gage and Mason became friends, then lovers, then family. And I agree that everyone needs a Jenny in their lives.
