Pictures of Us

Rate this book
The photographs lining the mantel of the Butterfield home tell their story. From shots of Michael and Tess as high school sweethearts to images of their daughter's wedding they look like the perfect family. But behind the pictures is a different tale that doesn't quite fit the love-at-first-sight, happily-ever-after version of Tess and Michael's marriage. And it's a tale that's revealed by a shocking phone call out of the blue.

With that one call the fabric of their life together shifts, and everything they believe is challenged. Are they the perfect family? Or is that a facade as thin as the photos themselves?

I've always been a reader. I've also been a movie theater ticket taker, a nanny, a camp counselor, and a romance editor. Now I'm a mom and a writer who still spends most of my free time reading (when I'm not watching too much TV).

After starting off in romance with books like Hot Date and Pictures of Us, I'm writing in the genre I've always loved most, young adult fiction. (My very first completed novel, which will live forever under my bed, was a young adult novel!) Cold Kiss will be available from HarperTeen in September 2011.

The cheating in this story is technically "not cheating" as they were split up as young loves, but to me he did cheat as he was still desperately in love with the heroine and dumped the ow immediately to run back to her after their break. The son (once again a secret child...is honestly an angel since birth scenario) is a good guy...hhe is however seeking them for a purpose... SPOILERS

SPOILERS he is very sick

My issues with not loving the book were the husbands reaction to having this son , due to complications they could not have other children... but during his constant running back and forth from his home to staying with his ex gf/mother of his son... (yeah like that would ever be allowed) he let everything in his life slide for this new son... trying to make up for a lifetime as he was desperate because of the boys illness....but the lingering interactions and staying with the ow absolutely unacceptable on every level. That I would not accept and did not like. His wife in the end accepted everything welcomed everyone and made all the adjustments and had all the embarrassments as they were high school sweethearts been together forever, I would have been humiliated by it and probably would have acted badly no matter the circumstances. The heroine was almost too good to be true. sadly not a favorite.

An interesting novel with great characters, but as it's an Everlasting Love novel, it's not quite a romance. It's more of a women's fiction story with an HEA. Still, a great read if you like drama and angst.

Told in first-person from the POV of middle-aged mom Tess Butterfield, it tells the story of her dealing with a sudden change to what she had hitherto understood to be her family. 25 years after meeting her husband Michael, and after 18 years of marriage, she finds out that he had fathered a son during a break in their relationship. The son, now 20, is a complete surprise to Michael, and to Tess as well. He wants to meet Michael and his family, and soon.

The novel is a great exploration of how love changes as it matures. We see their relationship and how it grew told in bits of flashback interspersed with the present action. From their first meeting as obsessive teenagers, to their rocky college years, to the birth of their daughter and finally on to the current crisis, it tells the story of love and how it changes. Born from youthful exuberance, tested by long separation and temptation, made stronger by the shared challenges of parenting it's tested once again by this latest chapter in their lives.

Garvey writes characters with a lot of life to them. She does a fabulous job with their 15 year old daughter. You know you've nailed the teenage vibe when you want to backhand the girl one second and hug her to death the next. As different as this book was from your average SuperRomance, I was nonetheless completely invested in their drama. Once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting it down.

I'd recommend this as a great read for a nice change of pace with an HEA guarantee.

Harlequin Super Romance, especially the Everlasting Love series are my newest guilty pleasure.
It only took me a few hours to read and it had the obligatory happy ending. A little mind candy never hurt anyone! Awesome.
