Don’t get me wrong, the money is great. I love my work.
But there’s a funny thing about being the world’s only supernatural reaper…
You make a lot of powerful enemies.
Pissing off all the world’s vampires would be frightening enough.
Add to that werewolves, witches, banshees, and trolls…
How the hell am I ever going to get a good night’s sleep?
Reaper for Hire is the third book in The Chronicles of Zoey Grimm - a paranormal adventure, a fast-paced urban fantasy featuring a slow burn closed door romance. This is not a reverse-harem.
Theophilus Monroe is a fantasy author with a knack for real-life characters whose supernatural experiences speak to the pangs of ordinary life. After earning his Ph.D. in Theology, he decided that academic treatises that no one will read (beyond other academics) was a dull way to spend his life. So, he began using his background in religious studies to create new worlds and forms of magic-informed by religious myths, ancient and modern-that would intrigue readers, inspire imaginations, and speak to real-world problems in fantastical ways.
This was a wild ride, you’re not sure who the true bad guys are, which side to root for (except Zoey) or what’s happening. Zoey is in the middle of a war in the making and even she isn’t sure what side she’s on. This was a fast paced, confusing, humorous, wild ride of a book. There’s progress in relationships, which is good, new characters are introduced, which can be to much; but overall a fun read.
Note: This review is for the first three books in the series so there might be a spoiler or two if you haven’t read any of them or only the first one.
After reading the first book in the series I was really undecided. Especially since the first book really was setting things up for the main story arc. There was a pretty cool twist at the end though.
So I decided to read the second book as well and found it… lacking. It was not as good as the first and the first was already average at best. But again, it was continuing to set things up and it appeared that the ending was actually the real start for Zoey’s adventures.
So call me gullible but I decided to gamble and read the third book as well. The third book was better than the second but still… I was hoping for more. I did not feel that I wasted my time though. There was indeed some enjoyable moments but unfortunately also a lot of rubbish parts.
Overall I give the series three stars but only two of the three books I’ve read was worth three stars and that was barely.
So, as I wrote, the first book is a lot of setting up. The books feels a bit slow and a lot of it is spent on Zoey not being able to reap. Since she is supposed to be a Grim Reaper that is a bit of an issue. The books is also dragged down by a bunch of woke bullshit that the author felt he had to throw in to appease the small but loudmouthed woke/cancel mob.
I mean, seriously? A homosexual hellhound with three heads. Is there no end to this crap? And don’t get me started about the silly “head” jokes. At least the hound himself, who talks by the way, is quite cool once you filtered out the rubbish.
The first book is saved by the ending which has a quite cool twist. One that sets the path for Zoey’s future adventures.
The second unfortunately felt mostly boring with a bunch of scheming, plotting and backstabbing. It kind of continued the story from the first book but it wasn’t until the very end that Zoey was finally released on the path that I assume she will follow in the coming books.
The third book is better than the second. Zoey has assumed her role as “reaper for hire”. Overall the story is not that bad and I do like Zoey and her Hellhound. But the story is just that, not bad but not great either. There are quite a few enjoyable moments but also quite a few silly or stupid moments.
For example the just standing there staring while the bad guy is nocked over and wait until he recovers stupid moment. Then we have this idea of Charon the ferryman on the river Styx apparently investing in crypto and buying Gummi bears. What the fuck? Did the author really think that was funny?
So, the bottom line is that this series is just barely good enough for me to give it three stars and that is with some hesitation. Will I continue this series? Well, that is a big maybe and I am certainly not in a rush to do so.
Zoey & Sienna have been working for the horseman distressing Josephine and Kevin’s romancing Zoey. On one of the Horseman’s contract jobs, the girls contract with Horseman has Sienna turning Jessna into a day-walker, which angers the girls and Josephine. Both the Oracle and Jessna pass information to Zoey that confuses the issue one of which is glimpses of an upcoming battle on Olympus. To my taste, the premise satisfies and this outing had plenty of twists and turns, but was too slow in places and the predictable antics didn’t fully engage. Rating: 3.5stars
Zoey only reaps supernatural souls and is being told which souls to reap by a creature she doesn't fully trust. Finding out why all these souls becomes important to her. Good read, many twists.
Few series grab me from page 1 of book 1 like this one has. If the next in the series is out the lawns will just have to wait till next weekend. My Sunday will be fully booked.
Zoey is reaping souls under contract. She finds out from her Mom that the person she is getting contracts from is a vampire that her Mom killed. What is going on and who can she trust?
A really interesting story that the author has come up with. A lot of twist and turns that make a terrific storyline. The characters have a great deminsi Hgg cuff xxccccc
These are just fun. Not great literature but interesting situations and characters with some good and dad humor in there, too. Looking forward to the next one!
Zoey's back and all help breaks loose...literally! Hades is on a mission to take over Olympus and he doesn't care who gets in his way. Zoey and her friends battle all sorts of supernatural on the wamdering horseman's orders but who is he really, and where does he get his intel? This is another fast paced fantasy full of mythical creatures of legend and high stakes. I really love Zoey as a strong FMC who doesn't take any crap from anyone and knows her own mind. She always does what she believes is the right thing at that time. I love how her relationship is blossoming with Kevin too and they both want to protect each other even though they're both trained to fight.
This one felt like it dragged a bit. It was good to answers to some of the questions posed by previous books, but it often left me with more questions. Still quite a bit of internal monologues by characters, but I enjoy the story line. I love how Monty steps up to his role and Sienna grows into her role as a badass.
