I am rating so far only the read and that was METAL. I love the art that is stylish, I love the world and theme that has its metal mood and I love that they managed to pull off a distinct art style while keeping the book also useful for a playing an RPG. I have not played the game yet, but book-wise I enjoyed this very much and loved the idea of focusing on the music as the guiding principle for the RPG game.

I mainly read RPG books more than play the games. This book was extremely enjoyable to read. I think it has inspired me to try to GM a game for the first time in 20 years. Just gotta find the right group...

A very brutal rpg.

This game is supposedly based on the song “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath. I would say, that the song is more like a source of attitude and inspiration and a marketing gimmick. The metal attitude is in the game and the names War Pigs and Lucifer, but that is it. Don’t get me wrong. The Viking Death Squad is full of stuff, that is very Black Sabbath - but not really about the song War Pigs.

BUT that is not a problem. The whole game concept, the game world Urth, the game mechanics and the devil may care metal attitude are all very unique and innovative. Well done! But at the same time, this is a fast and weird game and A LOT of stuff rests on the shoulders of the Game Master.

I also like the art and layout. They are very atmospheric and add nicely to the feel and enjoyment of the book. The only great failure and a obvious missed opportunity is the character sheet. It is very plain and doesn’t have the Viking Death Squad feel to it at all. It feels small, bland and apologetic - the opposite of VDS.

So, this is a small game, but with a lot of serious weight in it. I enjoyed reading it a lot. I won’t be running it, but if someone would run it, I would definitely play it.
