Manga club president Okamura always insisted he had no interest in real live 3D girls. His heart belonged to his favorite 2D character, Liliel. But when Lilysa joined the club, things got her passion is cosplaying Liliel down to the sexiest detail! Now that she’s convinced Okamura to be her photographer, they prepare for her debut at her first-ever convention!
At first, it was all about the fanservice, it is an ecchi manga after all. It remain a guilty pleasure, but the second volume of 2.5 Dimensional Seduction gives a pretty in depth look into the cosplay scene. It respects the passion of the people in this fandom.
It's becoming an interesting read, while remaining a visual feast for the depiction of the female form.
Mikari is trying to get her mittens on Okumura, and she’s even willing to cosplay with Lilysa to do it. If Okumura survives, he and Lilysa are prepping for her big cosplay convention debut with her Liliel outfit, which all looks rather suspiciously like a date, if one squints right…
It’s nice to know that gut feelings get it right now and then and this seemed like a series that deserved a lot more than being consigned to Seven Seas’ Ghost Ship imprint and refused listing by Amazon. Yeah, there’s some hornball stuff going on, but there’s a super charming love story/comedy of errors at the (very real) heart of it.
Of course, first comes the group cosplay and that amounts to Lilysa and Mikari dressing up in costumes that are so insanely skimpy that they could be used as dental floss. This is probably the funniest section, as the mangaka gets to enact the genre’s horny bits, but also makes fun of all the genre’s horny bits (“our prop is melting” is so damn funny) at the same time.
Mikari turns out to be surprisingly strong as the No Chance Rival, partly because the demon character she winds up cosplaying as likes Liliel too much to hate her and is also hopelessly crushing on the male lead in that series. It’s a cute bit of meta-commentary that works surprisingly well for Mikari, along with her reactions to the insanity that Okumura and Lilysa treat as normal by this point.
And even with her designs on Okumura, Mikari won’t stand back and do nothing when Lilysa needs help with an outfit ahead of her big cosrom debut. She gets a few lessons in trying to take advantage of Okumura’s character love to boot, but scores a point here and there. Mikari’s decent enough to not be a waste of page time.
But the real meat of this one is the convention, where Okumura and Lilysa first wind up spending an ungodly amount of time trying to get all the things in a row even before they get there and Okumura gets to come off as reliable and smooth again (if only he didn’t have so many nosebleeds).
The series continues to blend its sexy bits with its goofing around and its romance in a pretty evenly spread manner that comes to the fore here, as the un-date moves to a restaurant that lets Okumura be a hero while still getting panty flashed and these two dorks both wins up framing things like a visual novel.
While you’d expect that things go amazingly at the convention, they actually have our duo falling prey to numerous pitfalls (and possibly one side character who needs a good smack) that leave things in very dire straits indeed.
However, Lilysa winds up charming her fellow cosplayers and, with Okumura’s urging, she (barely) makes a big splash. These two are such a strong team that half the reason to read this is just waiting for them to get even closer (no time soon, they’re so hopeless).
And for all it’s ridiculous ecchi content - yes, there’s yet another wardrobe malfunction that lets the mangaka get some bare breasts on the page (I said my bit in my first volume review, but this series honestly needs none of this) - it respects the legality of things; the cosrom has no erotic pics because Lilysa isn’t of age (don’t parse the last part of this paragraph with the first or your head might explode).
The cosplay stuff is a lot of fun and full of tidbits from a perspective I haven’t seen in other cosplay manga, which was appreciated. The book addressing crossplay was also pretty cool and gives Okumura a chance to play hero again (even if he’s utterly wrong about it).
A lesser book in this vein would be nothing but sexy pics and one scenario after another connecting them. This certainly offers it up as part of its mission statement, but it’s also mixing in something really neat and genuinely charming and funny along with it.
3.5 stars - the only reason I’m not rounding this up is because the grim spectre of the old ‘hot for teacher’ trope has risen its head and I want to see this keep raising in my estimation. The outer layer might be ecchi as all get out, but the beating heart of this book is as silly and (sorta) pure as they come.
Alright, yeah, I get it. Some time ago, when MangaPlus started hosting the chapters of this manga, I read a comment (not on MangaPlus) appraising the series as being more like a sports manga with how serious it takes the work with cosplay. I definitely see that here with Lilysa's first time at a cosplay convention. The rivalry pushed by the other photographer guy, all the girls helping Lilysa with items she forgot to pack, the whole crowd exploding with appreciation at Lilysa's Liliel cosplay, the photographer guy being hit with nostalgia for his first 2D crush, Lilysa doing her final pose pointing at Okamura. Shit's great.
Kinda wish the author didn't intentionally flop the "confession." The joke is funny, but there's a risk of the manga going on indefinitely with this "will they, won't they" thing. I think I read somewhere that the manga doesn't devolve into too much love-triangle drama, so fingers crossed.
I'm unfamiliar with the original release, so I can't tell if Ghost Ship censored nipples here, or if the chapter that first shows naked breasts simply didn't include nipples in Japan. A later chapter shows nipples, so it's hard to tell. My understanding is the print Jump magazine can't show nipples anymore, but the tankobon releases can. This manga is Jump+ which initially releases digital-only before print tankobon, so I'm unsure of the rules. Perhaps nipples were intentionally omitted, then the author became more comfortable showing them?
I think I said last volume, but I do appreciate the way Hashimoto-sensei draws butts. There's something about the way the pelvis tilts for different ethnic backgrounds or something, which makes it so East Asian butts look different from e.g. European butts. This was something I didn't really notice until I tried getting into K-pop some years ago; I believe it was the video for "Miniskirt" by AoA, someone (likely Choa) would bend/lean in such a way to show off her ass, but then when you'd see her with straighter posture it looks like nothing's there at all. It surprised me because before then I'd only seen very little JAV, and I think generally boob-centric, if anything. Otherwise the only East Asian live-action stuff I'd have watched would be maybe a few tokusatsu shows, which are pretty chaste as a rule (that is, Kamen Rider is a kids' show...). I don't know. I think the point of this paragraph is that other manga that show off ass might make the asses stick out more in a straight-backed resting pose, but maybe that's not even completely accurate. Off the top of my head, Suzu from Ayakashi Triangle has overt cake, and I feel the same might be said of Yuuna of Haunted Hot Springs (but I think it's more my memory of some frames in the anime adaptation that make her butt look bigger in my head...?). The print Jump is a sexless sausage-fest today, so it's hard to think of more recent comparisons. Ah, Egghead Island One Piece gives the girls more prominent butts. I guess the key is hip:waist ratio, where asses look more extreme in Oda's style? Well, opening this volume back up to check ratios, I can see on the Characters page that Liliel is given meaty thighs and underbutt from the angle she's displayed, but that doesn't prove anything one way or another. There's just something "different" about the way Hashimoto-sensei draws women versus other stuff I read, and I can't yet tell what it is.
Also, Lilysa looks cuter with the glasses than the contacts she wears on the not-date. And she looks cuter as herself than as Liliel. Oddly, in the "simplified for comedic purposes" facial expressions Mikari shows in Chapter 16, I get the sense that I'd find her cuter if her eyes were just black normally.
Also also, hoping we get to see more of the other cosplay girls from this convention, as they all seem cool, from what little we see of them. The little bonus chapter was really nice to flesh them out a bit more.

This series is starting to impress me on learning the cosplay process even more.
While My Dress Up Darling still has better characters overall (and plotting) This does have fun characters and a real nice look at a convention style event. Seeing how our main lead here, Lilysa, handles her first time there. It's pretty cool to learn the ins and outs of the cosplay process, the time it takes, and what they are there for. I actually done a few convention myself selling comics, so I liked to connect that way.
The first third of this is 100% though pure humor/show titties. There's even a shot of two pairs of boobs on display. How fun. I can't complain too much, I do like boobs.
But yeah I feel the later half is starting to build a much more interesting look into cosplay than I expected. Hope continues that way.
The getting-to-know-you phase of a love story has always been my favorite part. That's what this is for Okumura and Lilysa and it's very well done. The small cosplay convention is an added bonus where the cosplayers support one another and remember their own ragged starts. I wish I thought it would last but the reappearance of Mikari in the final chapter of this volume signals otherwise. Harem manga here we come -- I hope not!
The second volume was also nice, as we learn more about cosplay as Miraki also joins the team and starts cosplaying with Lily, and Lily also attends her first cosplay convention. This was also very nice and fun to read so let's go on and let's Keep on Reading.
I have always loved comics, and I can and I have. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more. You should also read what you love, and I hope you will always love it. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.
I think I facepalmed like 50 times from reading the first two chapters… had me going ‘what the hell am I reading?’ like every page. I think this volume might have gone a bit harder with the ecchi stuff compared to the first volume (from what I remember), so I wasn’t as crazy about it.
But, lowkey those scenes hide actual sweet wholesome romance scenes that occur later on, mainly during the convention in this volume. I definitely wouldn’t call it great, but the characters in this series have personality to them and the wholesome romance scenes are actually nice.
okay the first cosplay con was so great - I loved the female friendships and camaraderie!! also, I love how Lilysa just does not get phased, even when Mikari dresses as Lilliel XD
