After weeks of travel and several narrow brushes with death and capture, Ari and Ely are finally nearing the end of their unwanted adventure. But Ari let her secret slip to save them and suddenly the stakes of their journey are so much higher. Thrown into the middle of the war Ari has tried to avoid for so long, they are forced to confront long-forgotten ghosts, painful betrayals, and dangerous truths. Will Ari and Ely's unsteady bond be enough to brave these oncoming battles, or will the past and its secrets tear everything apart?
A Vision in Smoke draws us back into the world of Until the Stars Are Dead with a host of new characters, exciting twists, and gripping action.

Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, Allyson grew up an avid reader, writer, and horseback rider. She finds herself particularly inspired by hikes in far-off places, strangers in coffee shops, and clever music lyrics.

After loving A Memory of Light last year, I couldn’t wait to read A Vision in Smoke and be reunited with Ari, Ely and her bobcat, Jagger. As with the first book, I was captivated by the beautiful writing and the vivid descriptions of the characters’ travels. The world-building expanded consistently, not just in terms of locations, but also magic, which took on a much bigger role than in the first book and within the civil war. I especially loved learning more about the anima. There’s still a lot of mystery around the bond between Ari and her bobcat, but I enjoyed the added details we got. It was one of my favorite things about AMoL, and it is still one of my favorite aspects of this story.
Another thing I enjoyed in this sequel was the evolution in the bond between Ari and Ely! Their banter is one of my favorite things about this story, and I’m starting to see the potential for a romance between them in the future. I love how protective Ari is of Ely, and how deeply he understands her feelings and thoughts. It was also great to see them interacting with so many new characters, especially Ely and his sister!
With the way AViS ended, I’m very curious to see where the story is headed. I had been able to guess the twist at the end of the first book, but this one took me completely by surprise! I highly recommend this series to everyone who loves reading YA Fantasy.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a free copy! Rating 4.5 stars!
If you’ve been around for the last year, you know that I am OBSESSED with A Memory of Light, which is book one of this series. A Vision in Smoke was one of my most anticipated releases of 2022 and y’all, it did not disappoint! It delivered everything I wanted in a sequel and I am dying to see where Allyson takes us in book 3.
I don’t want to give anything away because I think readers will be surprised by a lot that goes down in book two, but some of my favorite things were explored in AViS…found family, slow burn romance, lost princess, political dynamics…
Like I said, absolutely dying for book 3. I need it, like, yesterday!
Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“a vision in smoke,” the sequel to “a memory of light”, was truly a delightful and fast-paced read. this book starts right back up where the first one left off. ari, jagger, and ely have to safely transport their precious cargo to a new destination, the mythical and secret third army. the third army is supposed to be the answer to the civil war’s problem, a strong force that will bring peace to the world and restore power back to the earth instead of terrorizing oppressors. but even inspiring rebel armies cannot always be trusted to do the right thing, and even brave young women like ari are not sure they have what it takes to lead. filled with complex political intrigue, war meetings, friendship, and romance, this high fantasy book is sure to satisfy everyone who devoured “a memory of light” and leave them hungry for the next installment.
spoilers below!!
still, all things considered, i think this book took all the good stuff from the first one and just magnified it. my heart was pounding during the end battle, and i loved all of the character arcs and development. ari admitting that ely is her friend and she cares about him was so sweet, and even dinar managed to charm me a bit by the end. i’m so looking forward to the next book, even though this one isn’t officially released yet!
thanks to the author for providing me an eARC in exchange for an honest review!
After loving A Memory of Light last year, A VISION IN SMOKE was one of my most anticipated reads of 2022, and I was not disappointed! Coming back to this world and spending more time with Ari, Ely and Jagger felt like coming home. The book had as much high-stakes action as it predecessor, but the pacing was overall slower (in a positive sense) and the story more emotional (sometimes I was on the verge of tears). We spend more quality time with the characters, unraveling their pasts and diving deeper into their inner thoughts and feelings. I especially enjoyed Ari’s arc and watching her slowly open up, especially to Ely. Not too much, as is her way, but it’s a start! Will their relationship turn romantic? I hope so! But even if it doesn’t, I love the slow-budding trust and honesty of this grumpy/sunshine dynamic. The addition of new characters was also welcome. In particular, I adored Odaan, who was such a comic relief and as big an Ely simp as I am!
My only pickle—and this comes down 100% to personal preference—were the lengthy sections in war camps and councils. They were incredibly well written, but didn’t always have enough action to consistently keep my interest piqued. However, if you like reading about warfare in detail, you won’t be disappointed!
Now the agonizing wait for the next book begins, especially after that painful cliffhanger! My excitement is off the charts, and I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for the future. If you love YA fantasy like Throne of Glass (especially the first books with less romantic elements), don’t sleep on this series!
Thank you so much to the author for gifting me a copy. All opinions are my own.
‘A Vision in Smoke’ picks up right where ‘A Memory of Light’s stimulating cliffhanger-final left off, welcoming the reader into a rollercoaster of exhilarating action, arresting new characters and a page-turner, riveting storyline. From the very start up to very end of it, it retains the very intricate characteristics that we loved in the first book, while integrating a novel set of themes and evidently raising the stakes to challenge the characters.
Ari and Ely have only barely survived their unwilling adventure, when they’re thrown into the very thing they have desperately sought to avoid: the deadly war plaguing their lands for ages. While forming unexpected alliances, figuring out their place in the grand scheme of things and aspiring to the most precious peace, secrets they have long been buried will be tested and rise to the surface, making Ari and Ely do the one thing they have slowly found themselves aching for, yet fighting against; trust each other.
‘A Vision in Smoke’ combines some of the most loved tropes, many of which would spoil the story if mentioned. Though, what can be said, is that it introduces a fascinating cast of diverse, cheeky, new characters that will steal your heart, make you laugh, and even cry.
With action scenes perfect for fans of ‘Game of Thrones’, and a plot that will make you reminisce ‘Lord of the Rings’, AViS is entirely encompassing. It’s engrossing, it’s a nail-biting, mesmerizing sequel that every fantasy fan will fall head over heels in love with. If you are a fantasy fan, do yourself a favor — read ‘A Memory of Light’ and then instantly plunge into ‘A Vision in Smoke’. It will be one hell of a ride. [5/5⭐️]
I really enjoyed 'A vision in Smoke'. While I did love 'A Memory of Light', I thought the sequel found a whole other gear. Barkley was able to retain all the things that made AMoL stand out, while expanding the world, number of characters, and intricacy of the plot.
The first half of the book was familiar, as Barkley continues to flex her ability to tell an epic quest, with great descriptive language of the world around them. Similarly, Barkley's strength for character driven writing is seen throughout the entirety of the book as Ari and Ely (and their relationship) are tested with their past being dredged up and their future becoming even more perilous. I thought Barkely's ability to show Ari's growth in this book through Ely and Dinar's relationship was artfully done. Both main characters found room to breathe, err, and grow. I really liked Ely getting more POVs!
More importantly to me though, was what the layers that Barkley added to her storytelling in AViS. The plot quickly evolves past it's cocoon of survival, travel, and thievery. Since the reveal at the end of AMoL, Barkley really picks up the worldbuilding pace and doesn't look back. At the halfway point, we are in the middle of a struggle for power between multiple groups that threatens to eradicate any fantastical beings left in 'The Kingdom'. Barkley explores topics like "do the ends justify the means" as the characters struggle to pick the best path forward. She introduces many new characters, all with unique perspectives that enrich the tapestry Barkley is weaving. I grew very fond of Samorin, Captain Margeaux, Odaan, and of course Rumi.
I can't wait to see where the story goes in the third book!
A Vision in Smoke started off right where A Memory of Light took off, coming right out of the gate with tons of energy and heaps of oh-so-delicious tension.
The overall pacing of this book compared to the first is slower, but the impact it has on character development is immaculate! Not to mention the way it makes the heart-stopping action scenes all the more exciting!
During their travels, we really get to watch Ari and Ely, and even Jagger, bloom! Like a flower blossoming we get to see small pieces of these characters begin to unfold, chapter by chapter, making them far grittier and even more lovable (how that’s even possible I have no idea)!
As always, Allyson Barkley’s writing is simply phenomenal. She is a master class in world building. The descriptive and evocative prose in AViS was even more immersive than AMoL!
And the ending… whew. My heart was touched and broken all in one fell swoop. By the end, not only was I invested in our main characters, but I was also emotionally invested in almost every single side character. Also, her depictions of battle… just wow. It felt like I was really there on the field with Ari and Jag fighting for my life.
Overall, this stunning sequel takes Barkley’s beautiful, enticing story and elevates it to the next level. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book!!!
Many thanks to the author for providing me with an e-copy of the book in exchange for an honest review!
This was one of my most awaited sequels of the year! I had the pleasure of reading A Memory of Light last year and it was such a great YA Fantasy read, and this book is no less amazing!
I loved seeing Ari, Jagger and Ely (my precious, darling Ely) again! I won’t lie, Ari and Ely have an amazing dynamic and would work as friends, too, but I can’t help myself. I ship them. The characters are amazing, but Ely has a special place in my heart. The fact that he’s willing to step aside and ignore his feelings in order for someone else’s happiness just does it for me. I make no mystery that he’s my favorite and that he deserves the world.
This book felt more emotional and played on my heartstrings. The cliffhanger broke me. However, I did find A Vision in Smoke to be slower in some parts compared to its predecessor, especially in the strategizing and training parts, which are usually the parts of fantasy stories that I prefer told in paragraphs rather than extensive scenes.
Overall, this was a solid sequel. I can’t wait to see how the series continues!
Thank you to the author for sending me an ebook. Opinions are my own!
A STRONG sequel to A Memory of Light! We learn a bit more about the anima bond which is one of my favorite aspects of this series. We also get a new host of characters that are super interesting! Ely and Ari's bond grows and I SHIP THEM. Their chemistry just keeps getting better! I liked their little jaunt on the boat, it was one of the first times that Ari let slip her insecurities in front of Ely. And of course he was so sweet! Everything I loved about the first book was amplified and deeper in A Vision in Smoke! The political intrigue, the creatures, the anima bond, the world building- which in my opinion is one of the strongest draws to this series! I NEED the third book!!!
There are some books I wish I could forget just to go back and reread for the first time. this I one of those books. It is even better than the first, I could not put it down!! I read the first book a little under a year ago, but as soon as I picked this one up I was transported right back to where I left off.
Just like A Memory of Light, we explore the UTSAD universe through character driven writing. That being said, I though this one expands the world so much more. Different POVs, more characters, higher stakes, and more intricate plot.
I thought we saw more of the "decaying fantastical world" that I enjoyed and often it was a bit darker and maybe for an older demographic as well. I love Rumi and Odaan and they are my new favorite characters.
This series feels like it's making its own path and not falling prey to fantasy cliches. That being said, I ship Ari and Ely and if they don't get together by the end I will be literally heartbroken. In a way the ending made me hopeful, despite it being incredibly bitter. I had grown to really start liking Samorin and Ari, kind of snuck up on me.
I hope we see even more mermaids, nymphs, fairies, centaurs, and whatever else fantastical in book three. I also hope we see more of Margeoux in book 3.
Overall loved it and will recommend to all my friends who enjoyed A throne of glass!

If y’all have been around here for any length of time, you know my deep love for Allyson Barkley. She’s one of my favorite people on the planet for buddy reads, book chats/rants, and honestly, just to know. She’s also an insanely talented author in her own right, and it has been one of my greatest joys to get to beta read her second novel. I’ve been slow to review this one in part because my life has been insane over the past 6 months, and in part because this book is just so incredibly special to me that I’ve had a hard time putting it into words.
Let me start off by saying that Until the Stars are Dead was a beautiful debut-I absolutely loved Ari and Ely from the beginning (I’m still not so quietly shipping them over here), the world building was beautiful, and I was so bought into the heart of the story. But. A Vision in Smoke is even better. Seriously, Allyson is so gifted at creating vibrant, relatable characters. They aren’t perfect, they struggle, and you cheer and fight and ache for them all the way. I’m still a little mad about it actually—when I first read this book, I texted her after a character I didn’t even really like died because I was so bought into the story that I was sobbing.
In AVIS, we pick up with Ari and Ely in the next phase of their quest (and after a massive reveal at the end of book one). They’re tired, they’re struggling to hold to their identities in light of the shifting realities of the world as they know it, and honestly-they’re both dealing with some deep trauma from their pasts. They have to figure out whether or not to continue on their journey or to just pack it all in and hide away from the chaos that’s happening around them, and as a reader, you feel every moment of that struggle with them.
Obviously, I adore this book. I love this next phase of the story, and how it felt so congruent with book one but also had a totally different feel. The “task” from book one is already accomplished, and Ari and Ely have to figure out what’s next. Also, a large portion of this story takes place in an army camp, and it is so fantastic. Allyson introduces a host of new side characters whom I adore (and who bring with them some highly enjoyable snark), reintroduces some old ones, and dives deep into all of the ways their individual stories connect and intersect the overall plot.
The story is beautiful, the adventure is captivating, and I was so anxious reading it to see what choices the characters would make and how the story would unfold because of them. Read this book. You won’t regret it. All the Stars for this epic story, and so much excitement to see what happens next to Ari, Ely, Jagger and the rest of the UTSAD world.
This wonderful story picks back up right where A Memory of Light left off. We get to follow our favorite peeps, Ari and Ely (AND JAGGERI), as they traverse trial and trouble to complete their mission.
We get to learn so much more about anima and their bonds with humans. I especially loved (as I did in AMoL) reading the bits about Ari and Jagger's bond in particular. *I'm still thinking about that scene around the 120-page mark where perhaps my heart stopped for a minute or twenty*
A Vision in Smoke bamboozled my emotions so much more than A Memory of Light did and I'm pretty stinking delighted about that. There was more action in this book as well with plenty of close calls and squeakers to keep me interested indefinitely. The plot skyrocketed forward with such chutzpah that it only left me wanting more. Not to mention that all that traveling gave me slight Frodo and Sam vibes. Worldbuilding at its finest!
And that ending... broke.... my... soul....
I would ask "how dare you?" but I'm already fully committed to this series so instead I will ask... "WHEN WILL I HAVE ANSWERS?!"
Thank you, Allyson, for the gifted ebook in exchange for my honest opinion!
What a beautifully captivating story that the author has created. I love Ari’s character and this book tugged at my heart strings with the struggles that she faces both from her past and her present. Her relationship with Ely was perfect and I loved seeing them grow both together and separately throughout this book. My favourite part is still her connection with her bobcat Jagger, and I am excited to read more about the anima bonds.
The story telling in this book is amazing, and gave me such a vivid picture of the journey the characters were on. With a lot more bloodshed and a lot of twists that I didn’t see coming, I am deeply in want of more and can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
Where to begin…Allyson takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster.
As much as I loved A Memory of Light, A Vision in Smoke stole my heart. The vulnerability Ari displays in the second book shows the other characters what the readers have known all along - she is strong and fierce because she cares. The amount of times I had to put the book down to rein in my emotions is embarrassing.
This book has action, adventure, sorrow, romance, and suspense. I can’t recommend it enough.
A vision in smoke was amazing, I couldn't put it down. I loved all the new characters and anima! Ely getting more POVs was exactly what I was hoping for, but I didn't expect some of the twists and I might have cried a few times...
I loved book one so and book two did not disappoint. The epic journey continues and if you love quests, you’ll love this sequel. Tons of strategy and planning is developed in this book. I loved Ely so still through book two. He gives me all the cinnamon roll feels. But jagger still owns my soul. I really need my own anima magic animal companion. Sign me up please.
This book is an adventure. If you read the first book in this series you have to read the second. If you didn’t read the first you are truly missing out. This series draws you in and leaves you gripping the pages or… swiping them quickly. If you want to dive into the world of NE fantasy fiction, this is your ticket.
Last year I had the privilege of reading A MEMORY OF LIGHT and I have been itching for the sequel ever since.
As soon as I got the sequel in my hands it jumped to the top of my TBR and let me be the first to tell you that A VISION IN SMOKE is just as good!
In AViS, we continue to follow Ari, Ely, and Jagger (the best bobcat a person could ask for!) who continue on their heist journey.
I loved that even though this book was longer, it was still fast paced and did not just feel like a setup for the third book. There was critical character development and world building while still having an intriguing plot arc on its own. The new characters that we met helped with this a lot, and I hope to see more of them in the next book.
One aspect that stood out the most to me in the character development was the portrayal of Ari’s PTSD. We could see how she was haunted by it every day both through her inner thoughts and by the actions she takes.
I loved how the choices that the characters had to make, such as when they were in battles, were not cut and dry. Every choice had a sacrifice and this kept me hooked needing to know what the outcome would be. I also appreciate that there were no deus ex machina situations - everyone was vulnerable and everyone had blood on their hands.
I can't wait for the third book to come out!
Thank you so much to the author for the gifted copy!
I love these characters so much! Ari continues to be magnetic, despite her tough exterior, and I loved seeing these moments of her softening and opening up to more people. Ely continued to grow as well, proving himself to be more than just the naive, cinnamon roll magician. And there are so many new side characters, as well as familiar faces we get to spend a bit more time with, that bring so many more wonderful dynamics to this story.
There were a few times while reading this story where I was pretty much holding my breath, turning the pages and hoping against hope that certain characters would be all right. That level of suspense is my FAVORITE in a book, and I love how perfectly Barkley executed that.
With betrayal, action, building war, death, EMOTIONS, and another cliffhanger ending that will have all readers begging for the next book, this is quite a sequel. I also have some suspicions that we're just getting started with exploring this world and all it has to offer, and I absolutely cannot wait to see where the rest of this series takes us.
A truly stellar 2nd installment to the young adult fantasy series “until the stars are dead.” The plot really accelerates here and kept me on my toes the whole time!! I really loved all the new characters and the deeper dive into the magic of their world. Barkley once again leaves readers with a jaw dropping ending. I can’t wait for book 3!!!
I think I liked it more than the first book. Full of twists and turns. The tragedy? Remarkable. I am growing more and more fond of Ari and Ely's friendship as well. Action packed and full of heart. Truly a great read.
Your favorite characters are back and better than ever! If you enjoyed getting to know Ari, Jagger and Ely in Book 1, Book 2 only keeps the adventure going. While Book 1 did an excellent job introducing you to the world and characters, Book 2 keeps that going while ramping up the action! Things are starting to come to a head, Ari’s secret is out, armies are amassing, and a reckoning is coming. Barkley continues to combine a beautiful use of language and imagery to reel me in, with characters who make me say “I know exactly what that feels like” in the best and worst way. Get ready for a rollercoaster of emotions that don’t end on a full cliffhanger but do leave you wanting more! Also can we just give a round of applause for non-toxic male main characters and a female protagonist who looking isn’t just looking for love?!
“ A soul is not a life force, but it is a reason to live.”
Plot: After weeks of travel and several narrow brushes with death and capture, Ari and Ely are finally nearing the end of their unwanted adventure.
Review: I read Allyson’s debut novel, A Memory of Light and I can’t get enough of it. The way she writes and describes the novel was fascinating. And with the second installment of the series, I wasn’t disappointed.
I don’t want to spoil anything, but I’ll try. There were new characters introduced, a new world seen, and more plots and twists showcased. I was a fan of Ely and Ari since day one and I still am. I always loved the banters and the second book never failed to deliver. Of course who will forget Jagger? This was also one of my faves in the series (okay so I have favorites, and so? HAHAHA). Oh and there were more anima introduced! *That's the only thing I can give away.
I was so happy when there was more backstory about Ely and Ari (which I mentioned in my review with AMoL) and now it made more sense. The growth of these two main characters were something to look forward to. Furthermore, the transition of the story and the addition of other characters gave more life to this novel.
Even though this book was way longer than the first one, I couldn’t complain. This was deeper than I expected but the short chapters really helped and made it easy to follow. Allyson writes from the heart and you can definitely feel it in this book.
Overall, I enjoyed this book! Thank you Allyson for including me in the eARC team and all of my opinions are my own.
This book swept me up and took me on an unexpected journey. In the second book of the series, Barkley builds upon the world she created in A Memory of Light and introduces a swath of new characters, each with their own personalities and motivations. I was completely enthralled by the way these characters - especially Dinar, Mateo, Odaan, and Samorin - fit into Ari and Ely's story and appreciated the care with which the author crafted these relationships. Every time a new chapter began as a one-on-one interaction between characters, I got excited for how the story would progress. By the end of the book, I felt I had gone on just as much of an emotional journey as the main characters, and I absolutely cannot wait to see where the next book takes them!
A step up from an already great first book in every facet. Ari and Ely continued to get close, we learned more about how animas work, and even more in depth action scenes. The thing that really made this book for me is the side characters. I loved nearly every single one of them and their dynamics with our to main characters. Normally, I struggle to fully care about the side cast, but this book was different.
Picking a favorite scene from this book is really difficult, but I think I have to go with Ely's heroics with Jagger in the dragon's tunnel (Ely is my favorite). Learning more about the past of of both our leads was another concept I was delighted to see explored even more in this book. Seeing both Ari and Ely break down at different times really shook me to my core and made me care so much more about them. Ely screaming his head off at his sister was something I was so ready for, but I am happy they made up.
The only knock I really have for this book is that I wasn't the biggest fan of the romance between Ari and Samorin. It felt kind of forced? My guess is this happened because he was the first person to openly and outwardly display these feelings to Ari (with others pointing it out to her as well), so she latched onto it because she never had it (Ely give her time to recover but take notes bro). I don't know but that's what I'm telling myself.
Honestly, this is slotting up in the ranks of one of my favorite books due to how captivating it is. I felt like I was there watching the final battle from a nearby hill as it happened, and I did not expect Ari to run off at the end. Can't wait for the next book because I know it will continue to exceed my expectations!

This didn’t go as I hoped. I had mixed thoughts on book and it kind of spiraled in book two.
Once again Ari and Ely are traveling and traveling, and traveling. After getting to a war camp, most of the book is spent there without anything really happening. Some war councils, a few practice sessions, etc. Aaaand that was mostly it until at the end there was at last, some true action.
There was a dash of romance in here but it came from a different angle than I was expecting and I wasn’t wholly invested. And with how some of those last scenes shook out I am very much disappointed.
I think there was a lot of potential and the core ideas are there. I’m missing the connection to it I need to love it, but I’m sure others will.
Overall audience notes: - Fantasy - Language: a little - Romance: kisses - Violence: medium - Trigger/Content Warnings: physical altercations, battle themes, loss of loved ones
