When a single shot rings out to shatter the quiet at a prominent museum, it signals the start of a new mystery Patricia Fisher cannot avoid investigating.
An apparent suicide, a missing woman, a sunken treasure ship worth billions, and suspicious behaviour from almost everyone she meets … well, that might be a lot to take for some people.
For Patricia Fisher, it’s just Thursday.
She’s in Rio on the trail of an altogether different mystery, however it’s not long before Patricia questions if the two cases might not be intertwined.
What did happen to Professor Noriega? Was his death a terrible accident? If so, why was there a man onboard the Aurelia pretending to be the professor?
With faithful companions at her side, our English sleuth will have to roll the dice and take some chances for she only has two days to uncover the truth.
Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.
When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.
Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.
Seems a bit rushed and it was way to easy to know what would happen. Patricia is too smart to not change the locks after losing her purse! And how did that giant even get on the ship? And while I'm a huge Princess Bride fan, using Inigo was a bit of silly fun but Mandy too? Mr.Smith would have made more sense.
The author said he had fun adding more Gloria in this story. I absolutely dislike Gloria. Characters who take credit for things they didn't do, and blame others for problems they cause just because they are just crazy old ladies are teeth grindingly irritating.. I was ready for the wacko collector storyline to be completed, yet it continues and Patricia no longer has the jewels. This particular story was a let down and I read it while I'm a cruise ship in Columbia.
suspenseful read, as are all the books in this series!
That said, sentences like these have got to go: “In all other respects he looked Brazilian, but his hair declared a mix of racial heritage somewhere in his past.”
1. What is it to “look Brazilian”? 2. The character referred to has “copper-colored hair.” How does the color of his hair declare “a mix of racial heritage”? 3. What is gained by giving this character a racial profile in the first place, no matter how vague? 4. Sentences like these exhibit a throwback to the racialized terms of the 18th and 19th centuries and have no place in this novel.
I’ve never written a review of a Steve Higgs book, but this really disturbed me, and I felt I had to. I can’t give the novel more than a 3-star rating.
This book’s title made me think of the rumble between the Jets and Sharks in “West Side Story.” It was really just the word rather than rival gangs fighting in Rio.
As always, Patricia manages to find dead bodies. Or do they find her?
You already know she’s going to drag Jermaine, Barbie and Sam in on the action. As well as the rest of the ship’s security team.
It’s a mad chase for sunken treasure of gold and jewels.
I hope this lady continues her adventures for many more books. Thank you, Mr Higgs, for creating this lady and her friends.
As the book opens, Buddy the Ape is being transported off the ship (finally) so he can be taken back to his island home and Angelica Howard-Box is also being led off the ship to be taken back to England for trial. The group is in Rio and Patty wants to sight see, but duty comes first. She and her group first head for the museum to try to solve the murder of Finn Murphy (from previous books) and to see about coins/gems which were found with Finn. Nothing is simple for Patty. The group gets shot at, chased and one of the group gets kidnapped. More of Gloria (Sam's grandmother) is in this book and she livens everything up.
What happens in Rio stays in Rio... The investigative crew of the Aurelia set out to find the identity of the body in the bowels of the ship...and why he was there in the first place. When the autopsy reveals some staggering facts, the crew disembarks in Rio to find answers. The madcap misadventures begin and go full on nonstop right up to when the ship needs to depart. A seat of your pants story that moves so fast you'll be lucky to hold onto your book! There are some laugh out loud moments that keep the hijinks moving at breakneck speed! Well done, Mr. Higgs!
Great fun, as are all the books in this series. What an imagination Steve Higgs has! I love the role Gloria, Sam's grandmother, had in this book. Only she could cause such havoc with a motorized scooter.
Patricia inadvertently solves a smuggling scene in Rio but still does not learn who killed the stowaway with jewels in his stomach. At least that means there are more books to come in this delightful series.
Too bad Patricia was so busy solving crime that she didn't see nearly as much of Rio as we did.
And Patricia Fisher did it again leading an entertaining and funny search for a culprit in Rio de Janeiro. A well-written and fast-paced story that kept me entertained for a few hours. Just one comment, being Brazilian, there is no way to define what a Brazilian looks like, my ancestors were from Japan and Spain, and I'm mixed race as almost all Brazilian are so there's no way one can stereotype what we look like.
The cruise ship has docked in Rio and the police chief has told Patricia that if he sees her up town he will put her in jail until the ship is due to leave. Patricia and her friends have caused havoc uptown while investigating a death. Theyve been told that some of the cops are corrupt. It's all happening at the museum where a big smuggling ring is going on. Can Patricia break the case before the ship sails?
Entertaining as always, Mrs. Fisher never disappoints. I am working my way through the whole series and enjoying every minute of it. The read is light and delightful, and you can’t help getting invested in the characters and their lives. I’m a big fan of this author and have read some of his other series’s.The addition of Gloria is genius, she adds to the adventure. I can’t wait to see what happens next. All aboard for Miami!
This one was exceptionally stupid. I kept waiting for the FBI agent to be a scam. It was wayyyy too much to have his undercover persona be Inigo Montoya but his real name is Mandy Patinkin?! GTFO - I’m all for campy fun but this was just over the top and misleading for no particular reason. And Gloria isn’t funny, she’s obstinate and hinders more than she helps. And the ending was just so abrupt and the story as a whole felt very rushed.

Patricia Fisher cannot stay out of trouble. With a murder to investigate involving precious gems and ancient gold coins, Patricia’s first trip to Rio is sidetracked. As usual Patricia is making wild assumptions but she solves a crime, though not necessarily the one she was investigating, in the end. Lots of fun, great characters, a joy to read.
Another fun Patricia Fisher: Ship's Detective mystery. As the hip docks in fabulous Rio, the search for information about.A treasure hunt unravels. but while Patricia is investigating more information about a golden coin, another mystery is thrown into her lap. of.course.she's getting shot at again but how do the two mysteries connect or so they!
5th book in the Patricia Fisher Ship Detective series - in this one, the Aurelia is docked in Rio and Patricia is still on the search to discover why there was a dead stow-away on the ship loaded with centuries old jewels. Naturally she stumbles upon other mysteries that require solving and this time a smuggling ring. Adventures abound!
As usual, another good book by Mr. Higgs! Of course, Murder is in the air, Patricia gets grabbed, Jermaine shows off his fighting skills, Barbie has to seduce a stranger, Gloria gets wild, & Sam is a sweetie!! Although the book was great, there seemed to be something missing. Can't put my finger on what though!
Clink those glasses of gin and give a big shout out to Mr. Higgs for another superbly written addtion to his Patricia Fisher series. Highly Recommended.
I was give this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.
Patricia has her hands full as the continuing mystery of dead bodies, stolen gems and gold build into non stop action. Clues are left for us to solve, only to be slightly off kilter. Great read.
Jewel theft, burglary and mayhem seem to follow Patricia
An ancient jewel theft leads to the burglary of Patricia's safe and the search for said burgler. Expecting to find a link to the jewels they head to the museum, only to get involved with a different crime.
Another thrilling mystery for ship’s detective Patricia Fisher and her team as they land in Rio to find out about the treasure of the San José. Of course plans go awry, and nothing is as it seems. Such FUN!
Patricia is still trying to find out who killed Finn Murphy and why, isn't she??? She doesn't answer that question, but has a lot of others, doesn't she??? I enjoyed this story and recommend the book.
Another great book on this wonderful series. It has it all….mystery, action, murder, romance and a great cast of characters! Get it and read it…..you will enjoy this book and all the books in this series.
There is always someone who is after Patricia, trying to kill her, shoot her, kidnap her, or steal from her. It is entertaining, though. She has her trusty group of friends to help her out of whatever situation she finds herself in.
A few books back, the author added a ew character. Granny Gloria! I could be her. But what a character she is . Such a fun , laughable, likable , strong-willed old bird she is. You just have to love the old bitty. What a great addition to the stories.
Patricia and her team land in Rio and discover not only smuggling going on but museum stealing artifacts. Join Patricia and her team in working through the clues to solve the ones behind this series of crimes.
There is always a detective trying to discredit Patricia and her team. It is fun to watch him get his comeupance. Great read as always from Steve Higgs.
