J.L. Kenna blew it out of the park with her debut novel, Under the Night Sky. This mind-blowing story hits on every emotion possible; it is funny, dramatic, angering, sexy, passionate, and loving. J.L. Kenna does a phenomenal job bringing the characters to life, making you feel every emotion they feel, which let’s face it, in high school that’s a lot!
Not going to lie, I was pretty skeptical when starting this book. I did not know how I would feel while reading a romance novel about high school kids… well let me tell you… I am so glad that I decided to give this book a try, WOW! I found myself laughing aloud at the snarky comments, while finding myself angered during conflicts within the story, and even shedding some tears at the heavy-hearted bits.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves contemporary romance mixed with a lot of drama, while clenching at your heartstrings. Although I do recommend an age of 18+ due to the profanity and sexual content.
My rating of this book is most definitely five stars. This will be another read that I recommend to all my romance reading friends.

18 year old Skylar has one goal - to leave town once she graduates. Her plan is going smoothly until she bumps chests with the new guy in town, Dominic Pope.
This book has:
➡️ small town romance
➡️ highschool setting
➡️ dual POV
➡️ MC vibes
➡️ a touch her and I'll unalive you H
My favourite things about this book:
✅️ the banter between the mc's is top tier, I especially love a quick witted heroine
✅️ a top notch bestie. I liked Dixie, especially when she kept it real 😆😆 - her line “I can’t take any more of this lovefest. It’s nauseating. I’m happy for you guys, truly, but shut the fuck up" was probably my favourite.
✅️ this wasn't just your average highschool romance. Skylar and Pope especially, had some very adult issues to deal with. I knew it was building up to something darker and I loved it as a highschool setting isn't usually my jam.
✅️ the unravelling of secrets - a few twists and turns which took me by surprise
The world building in this book was 🤌🤌 and I'm hoping it leads to more books for different characters (Principal Jimmy I'm looking at you). Possibly a series even darker involving The Scorpions.
I honestly cannot believe this is a debut novel. If this is the first thing to come from the amazing mind of JL Kenna, then I look forward to seeing what else she comes up with in the future. Definitely an author to watch.

ARC Review:
Where do I even start? I loved this book so much! It was beautifully written. The love and the emotional rollercoaster this book puts you through is everything I love in a book. I even cried! Which never happens.
Love, bullies, loss, fear, friendship, fighting & so much more! There wasn't a whole lot of spicy scenes but when there was 😉 it was good!
If you like books by Jennifer Hartmann, then I think you will love this one as well. It gives off the same type of vibe.

Skylar's life was pretty good until she was 16 then everything started to change. She lost friends, her mother and her father. What an incredible book. Under the Night Sky is this author’s book debut and can be read as a stand-alone. No cliffy and plenty of interesting side characters if she wants to build on this world (namely, Mr. Cartwright… the hunky principal who’s on a first name basis with our FMC).
Skyler (Beach Rat) (Night Sky), the once popular high school queen was shunned by the entire school for breaking the quarterback’s heart. Shortly thereafter, her dad disappears, which completely broke her heart. Snarky, tough, absolutely gorgeous, and unwavering in what she believes in. She constantly defends her ex despite his torment because that’s the kind of girl she is. Sky goes through high school keeping only her two best friends (and a certain good-looking principal) close… until a stranger from California shows up…
Dominic. Sexy, broody, strong and surprisingly sweet and caring. After a chance encounter in the hallway, their paths crossing was inevitable. The connection between Dom and Sky was tangible. He’s your moody, quiet, alpha who came into town for revenge. What he didn’t expect was to meet a girl with cinnamon brown hair that changed everything…
Both loners for different reasons, they seem to find solace in one another, at least until they don’t. Their path to happiness was not an easy one – the twists were unexpected and sometimes devastating, but it made the ending oh so sweet.
First, I LOVE JL Kenna’s writing style – the witty banter is everything. I highlighted more in this book than I have in a long-time. Reading her work is like a breath of fresh air, and I cannot get enough. Their finding ways to say “I love you” without saying I love you was the absolute sweetest. I’m hoping the author will continue with this world – I’m here for it all!
Highly recommend this book if you’re looking to immerse yourself in a well-developed world full of interesting characters!

Thank you so much to @authorjlkenna for the ARC of her book, Under The Night Sky! This book was STEAMY and the chemistry between the characters jumped off the pages. I really liked Dominic's sensitive side and need to protect his girl. There was just the right amount of drama and angst and I enjoyed seeing this love story play out. I do think that I would have liked it even more if the characters were in their 20s, I found some disconnect between their high school ages and their maturity levels as this book definitely features mature, adult themes. Overall, it was a great story!

How this is a debut novel I don't know... J.L Kenna absolutely slayed!
This book is beautiful. J.L's style of writing is magical, she has done such an incredible job of creating such loveable characters, an intriguing world, and an interesting plot that pack's so much emotion that will certainly pull your heartstrings.
I am in love with both Sky and Dom! They are sickeningly sweet, with such an emotional and deep connection that is so beautiful to read. They both have way too much attitude and sass for their own good and are simply made for each other in so many ways. Ugh the way they said I love you without saying I love you totally got me... they are just too adorable.
Also, can I just say Sky's inner dialogue is absolutely hilarious, I had so many laugh out loud moments with her.
The two epilogues gave the perfect ending to a beautiful love story, that packs humor, passion, suspense, drama, and a whole lot of love.
I'm really excited to see where this author goes next, if this is any indication then it's going to be amazing. Congratulations on an amazing debut J.L Kenna!

The damaged, bad boy vibes we get from Dominic are literally everything! 🔥 Behind all the hurt, heartbreak, and broken pieces, we get such an epic and amazing love story. This one definitely doesn’t miss the mark and if you’re looking for angst, drama, romance, and even some mafia themes - this is for you! This was written so well and the fact that we get two epilogues looking further and further into the future gave my heart such a special closure on this story.

Under The Night Sky, by J.L. Kenna
Before I begin, I would like to congratulate @aulthorjlkenna on her debut novel Under the Night Sky AND thank-you once again for the ARC.
UTNS is a contemporary standalone (dark) romance novel, and honestly, I quite enjoyed. Note that I put dark in parentheses. I did this because, while by many definitions it is in fact on the spectrum of DR, HOWEVER my definition where I compare my “darkness measurement” to vast intensities of dark romance (I’m taking about you ‘These Monstrous Ties’-- @authorkvrose – among others), this one is on the lesser end. There were some dark aspects that you would find in a typical DR genre, however I would consider it mild—or as J.L. Kenna describes it, “contemporary romance with beautifully dark edges”. I should have left it at that…anyways.
I digress. Kenna hit the ground running with this one. There was suspense and action, hints of mystery. The characters were intriguing and well developed, with witty banter, funny dialogues, and while there weren’t as many steamy scenes, they were executed lovely.
I realize I have not at all said anything about the storyline itself, and I’m not going to. But if you are a lover of high-school romances, mafia vibes, secreted alpha heroes, and instant attraction, then I urge you to add this to your list!
I will admit, I’ve never been the biggest fan of high-school romances, but Kenna really executed it!
All in all, it was a fantastic debut novel, and I cannot wait to see what J.L. Kenna has in store for us next!

Holy cow! You would have never guessed this was a debut book! This book was so freaking good! I could not put it down! Dominic and Skylar’s story was just the best! I couldn’t get enough of these two! Skylar hands down is one tough cookie, with having to put up with Dominic! They are totally couple goals! I Cannot wait to read more form J.L Kenna!!! “Contrary to popular belief there’s nothing wrong with being broke. There’s something beautiful in the broken pieces of a person. Don’t let them make you whole because only whole people fear their own collapse. Clean the dirty from under your nail and keep moving.” “Everyone expects the wild card to act wild. A man who keeps you guessing, keeps you living in fear” “The waves inside me are controlled by your tide. Your blood speaks to mine.” Are some of my favorite quotes! This was definitely a 5-star read for me and hands down 10/10 recommend!!!

I don’t want to give too much away as I want to you to through the same journey I did but Dominic is the epitome of a book boyfriend! Absolutely gorgeous, Fiercely protective of what’s his, a little tortured and the sweetest and most genuine guy you’ll ever meet.
Skylar is.. I swear my spirit animal. She’s little but fierce and pretends not to care about anything but the trust is she loves passionately and honestly. She’s not a girl you mess with.
The way their worlds collide is just kismet I swear.
Ok before I ramble! Go read it!!!! You 100% would regret it! Don’t add it to your list, don’t wait till you’ve finished a series. Stop what your doing and download it!!!

What happens when Skylar who is determined to leave her hometown after graduation runs into Dominic whose main focus is to avenge the death of his mother? Neither Skylar nor Dominic are looking for love, but love finds them.
I really liked the connection between these two. Dominic has found himself trapped in a difficult situation and Skylar is forced to face his dark side and come to terms with it. They pick each other's pieces and slowly build something so beautiful and worth fighting for. Together they can see a future in the light and when this is put into danger Skylar needs to decide if she can let go what she thought was making her strong and let Dominic be in her life.
Slow burn but worth waiting for the spice, it is a chef's kiss.

I really liked the connection between these two. Dominic has found himself trapped in a difficult situation and Skylar is forced to face his dark side and come to terms with it. They pick each other's pieces and slowly build something so beautiful and worth fighting for. Together they can see a future in the light and when this is put into danger Skylar needs to decide if she can let go what she thought was making her strong and let Dominic be in her life.
Slow burn but worth waiting for the spice, it is a chef's kiss.

This book was so good ! It was fun, spicy, entertaining . I couldn’t put it down , I needed to know what was going to happen next . POPE I will not forget this name for a long time let me tell you, the character was everything from sexy, to sexy to going to let go grab a napkin because of my drooling problem😂he is most women’s Fantasy guy . “Night sky “ was soooo me it wasn’t funny, she’s sassy and honest and such a great character to follow. This is for sure a must read :-). I truly hope this author writes more so I can continue to read her books! A MUST READ FOR SURE!!!

This was a debut book for J.L. Kenna and she did a wonderful job. From start to finish I was part of the story. I really didn’t want Skylar and Dominic’s story to end! They definitely were written in the stars and I loved every thing about them!

I fell deep for this story, and these characters. At no point do you feel like this is the writing of a first timer, everything I could have asked for was done perfectly. This is a genre I know can get repetitive, but this standalone adventure takes you on such a beautiful ride that it never feels trite. It's also hard to get readers invested so deeply in a standalone, vs series, but this one did just that in spades. I can't say enough good things about this book without spoilers, so I'll just say this - take a chance on this author, because I have a feeling we're lucky enough to be here watching while an amazing career is just beginning.

Fantastic story, loved every second!
I really, really enjoyed Under the Night Sky. This was a very well done story for a first time author. Dominic was everything you want in a book boyfriend. He was perfect even with his dark parts. Skylar was a great character and I just loved her spunk and tenacity. You could really tell these characters were fated to be together. They had amazing chemistry and I loved the banter when Skylar fired up Dominic. The story held my attention from start to finish and had a very interesting and emotional plot. It was really well written and had me falling in love with these characters. I would definitely recommend Under the Night Sky, especially if you love bad boy heroes!

This was my first book by this author and I enjoyed the heck out of it!
I loved how Skylar Sassy and hard headed! she knew exactly what she wanted. While Dominic came to King with a purpose but got distracted by Skylar. The nicknames he gave her were adorable! they definitely had some ups and downs but it worked out in the end.

This book is a kiss to your soul. Two people broken by loss find each other and make each other whole once more. With an almost playful bantering style of writing, let yourself get lost in Skylar's and Dominic's story. The characters leap off the page and the story itself will have you on the edge of your seat. Skylar is missing her vanished father and hell bent on getting the hell out King Texas. Dominic wants nothing more than to kill the local mob boss and seek his revenge. Nothing will get in his way. When these two crash together, there is no stopping it. Its inevitable.

Wow. This story has consumed my every thought the last 24 hours. What was going to be a casual read turned into a nearly 3am bedtime and blowing off a morning at work.
Dominic and Skylars story is just incredible. So many elements to their journey that had me laughing crying and wanting to smash my kindle.
J.L. Kenna nailed it with emotion. Raw and passionate, I felt every single turn of events. The Heartbreak the love the spice aghhh no words will justify what I feel for their story.

Skylar runs into the new kid Dominic and both of them are instantly attracted to each other. Dominic is in King, Texas for a reason and he wants no distractions. Skylar wants to graduate and get as far away from King as she can. The chemistry between them is too much to stop them from being together. Great characters and storyline Highly recommended Amazing Book. This debut book is so good I can’t wait to read her next book.

This story focuses on two high schoolers Dom and Skylar.
Without giving too much away, I will say that Dom and Skylar are tortured souls with issues of their own but they work well together. Skylar is a tough girl and Dom is moody but is sweet with Skylar
I would definitely recommend for readers 18+ since there are some triggers

I was Super lucky to get an ARC for this book and fell in love with it! It was such a phenomenal book you’d never know it was a debut novel! This is a fantastically written High school contemporary romance that pulls that will pull on your heart strings. Dominic and Skylar are total couple goals.

I loved this book. I yelled at it. I cried at and with it. I went through a rollercoaster ride of emotions with this one. I loved BOTH epilogues!! I loved their love for one another and I loved her genuine attitude in life. This was my first book by JL Kenna and I'm excited to read her latest one.

So so many things to love about this book!
First, I have to say I don't normally read a book with less than 100 reviews on GR but this one was recommended in a Facebook group I follow and so I figured I'd give it a shot! I am so glad that I did :)
JL Kenna's written not one but TWO characters you can't help but love. Skylar has had a rough life, she should by all intents and purposes be afraid of getting hurt by those in her life given her history but she still puts herself out there when she crashes into Dominic in the school hallway. They both try to fight the chemistry at first, with some angsty mixed signals but in the end they decide that they can't fight their undeniable chemistry, and give it a shot.
Skylar is a feminist who can slay her own dragons and Dominic is a man who wants to worship Skylar with everything he has. They fight and butt heads but they love one another passionately both physically and emotionally throughout the book.
The smut is on point. I read a lot of smutty books and in this one, she just straight up nails the steamy scenes. Nice and spicy :)
There's some mystery and suspense in this book and it all gets wrapped up into a very lovely HEA bow at the end that you as a reader can't help but fall in love with. I wish the best of luck to Kenna with her future books and I do expect this one to take off given how good it is. I will be recommending it to my friends!

What can I say, this book was really good. The first half kinda dragged a bit and there were moments I was struggling, but holy hell the second half- it was absolutely fantastic! I couldn’t put it down. Skylar and Dominic’s story was truly everything. She was the good girl, he was the dark, broody bad boy that changed his plans for the girl! It was perfect. The chemistry between them was more than just sexy and steamy, it was like they were soul mates. But not gonna lie the sex was pretty damn hot!
I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened to Skylar’s dad. I started to slowly suspect he would somehow be tied to Ace, and I figured out pretty quickly who Ace was to Dominic. But what surprised me most was Rio’s identity! And another surprise, and a good one, was Mox coming around and redeeming himself and the friendship he had with Skylar. Because he was certainly a major ass there for awhile with her.
This was a really good read, and I really enjoyed how much a great guy Dominic and that there was no cheating or ow drama. There was only one girl this boy saw and wanted and that was Skylar!
