College student Seigi works part-time at Jewelry Étranger, run by the equally handsome and capable jeweler, Richard. All sorts of people visit the shop: a couple looking for a ring for their thirtieth wedding anniversary, a college student who’s lost contact with her significant other, and a client looking for someone to attend a very special auction in their stead––an auction in which a man who knows of Richard's past is in attendance. What happens when Seigi and Richard's feelings clash in earnest for the first time?!
”I had to wonder what an adventure it must be to spend that long with someone you chose—not someone related to you.”
“But the loneliness I felt at the notion that the distance between us would never shrink certainly wasn’t going anywhere.”
“‘I know you said you don’t want to be my special someone and you don’t want to leave your mark on me, but you already are someone special to me, and you’ve left a mark on me that’s never going away.’”
“It’s not even that I’m not interested in it; it’s more like…like I can’t even imagine it having anything to do with me in the first place.”
Book 3 is where the story really starts for me. It's where we peel back the layers, the carefully constructed distances, the elegant words, and pretty face, and we get to see Richard for the first time. The first two books gave us a good idea of who Seigi was - the earnestness, the kindness, the desire to do good - and who he thought Richard was. But we see Richard get upset in this story, we see him get angry, and we see him take risks that he would normally admonish Seigi for without a second thought. We see a Richard that is slowly coming out of his shell and which just gives us more questions than answers.
And that cliffhanger? Even the second time around it still gets to me.
Feelings get complicated in this volume. Our boy Richard is suffering, and who wouldn't in his place; Seigi is such a bonafide oblivious flirt and a proficient mixed-signals sender. I have a feeling Richard underestimates the affection Seigi has for him (whatever its nature). It'll sure be fun to see this unravel in future installments.
I'm glad we get to know a little of Richard's past and see a new side of his personality. Volume 4 will be a hell of a ride, I cannot wait <3 <3 <3
While I wish that Seigi (and everyone else in the book) would just accept Tanimoto's confession of being aro/ace, that they don't feels like a very familiar reaction, and even she thinks there's something "wrong" with her. Overall this is developing into a really interesting story, and the Richard and Seigi bits are strong enough to merit rounding up rather than down.

Summary As with my previous reviews, here's a summary of each short story:
1. The Sought-After Topaz: The Tamuras visit the jewellery store in search of a topaz to commemorate their 30th wedding anniversary. Teiichi, the husband, is adamant about buying the best stone of the highest quality, while his wife Hagino would prefer a stone that speaks to her rather than of the highest grade. Teiichi is a mineral collector, and his passion for stones overbears his wife's feelings. Frustrations mount with the couple fighting over a stone that is meant to symbolize their love.
2. Unsettling Turquoise: A fellow student at Seigi's university introduces him to a girl from another college who is searching for her missing boyfriend. Before disappearing, the man gave her a single turquoise earring as a token of their love. Okita pleads with Richard and Seigi for their help, and the two uncover a nefarious underground plot to lure young women into buying false stones. Richard plans to go undercover to dismantle this operation, but Seigi is worried for his safety so he tags along as his bodyguard.
3. The Jade Inheritance: One of Richard's old acquaintances, an antiques dealer in Ginza, approaches him with a proposition to buy a unique piece of jade at an auction sale. The piece is estimated to go for 30 million yen, a staggering amount of money, yet Richard expects that the final price will be much higher. Seigi accompanies his boss to the auction where they meet a shady character from Richard's past who tries to scare Seigi away with warnings about his secretive boss. Richard's true identity is uncovered, but Seigi is more concerned with Richard's well-being than this revelation.
4. Angelic Aquamarine: Tanimoto announces to Seigi that she has been set up for an arranged marriage with none other than Mr. Homura, the man whose fiancé ended up leaving him for her long-term girlfriend (see volume 1). Seigi is devastated and heartbroken, and resolves to support Tanimoto in her decision, but Richard convinces him to come clean with her about his feelings before it's too late. Seigi plans on giving Tanimoto an aquamarine as a symbol of his love, but Tanimoto declares that she does not understand feelings of love and romance in the conventional sense.
Extra: Fluorite by Your Side: Richard is at the airport when he meets a distressed woman whose bracelet broke and scattered all over the airport floor. Richard helps her put it back together and explains that fluorite is a special stone that can glow in the dark. The woman reveals that she is travelling to visit her estranged sister in America, and indirectly helps Richard understand that Seigi is not just an employee to him, but rather a friend.
Review Ahhh the cliffhanger of the century ಥ_ಥ If you watched the anime, you know what happens after Richard's sudden departure, but it still doesn't lessen the blow when you're reading it in the novel. Richard's abrupt departure, and his strained fight with Seigi over Tanimoto just squeezes your heart painfully. Everyone in Seigi's life tells him that there's more than meets the eye with Richard, yet he still remains obstinately blind. Even his estranged mother, who doesn't know Richard and barely knows about Seigi's life, hints at the fact that Richard might have more than friendly feelings for him, but Seigi just dismisses it. The fact that Richard repeatedly pushes Seigi towards Tanimoto because he feels that it's the right thing to do just hits you right in the feels. There were a lot of explosive moments between the two this time. Both Richard and Seigi were incredibly angry with one another at times, without necessarily understanding why.
Key moments (spoilers ahead)
I couldn't explain it, but for some reason, I felt really on edge. No, that wasn't the right word for it. I was actually pretty angry. Like, on-the-verge-of-losing-it angry. But why? Was the stuff that strange man said getting to me? That didn't make sense. A random stranger being rude to you was like getting unlucky and stumbling on a rock, If I got mad about that sort of thing, I'd be snapping at the gods every time it rained. That was why I thought it had to be something else. Why was I so mad? And at what? ... I was angry because [Richard] wouldn't let me worry about him. (p.120-121)
"Thank you for being so considerate. You always were a very sweet person. Almost like a man getting cold feet and pulling back before going in for a kiss." ... "Fine. You wanna know what's pissing me off? I'll tell you. It's not the fact that you hid your identity from me. You think I didn't know that from the start? It's not normal to be with someone this long and not know a single thing about their family. But it's not because I don't care. The opposite, in fact. I just don't want to force you to tell me anything you don't want to." "I honestly can't tell if you're being motivated by benevolence or cowardice." "Does it matter?! My point is I'm not the kind of man who gets cold feet and pulls away from a kiss. I just hate the idea of valuing yourself so little that you feel like you have to kiss someone you don't want to. I'm done." ... "What? Why are you making that weird face at me?" "Oh, nothing, I just hadn't realized you felt so strongly about me." (p.125-126)
"I was expecting a deluge of inappropriate compliments from the master." ... He looked so young, all dressed up like that. I almost started laughing. "When you see something impossibly beautiful, it takes your breath away. That's why I didn't say anything. You know, you probably shouldn't just wander around town looking like that--you're liable to cause a multi-car pileup if a driver lays eyes on you." "You've developed quite the silver tongue." "You only have yourself to blame for that. I could just say you look incredibly handsome, but you always look incredibly handsome, so I had to get creative. Happy now?" (p.136)
Don't you dare insult my boss. He's the best man I know. It doesn't matter if he invites misfortune in his wake or whatever. And I honestly don't care what you call him. I love watching him work, so if you interfere with his business, you're gonna piss me off. (p.145)
"Sorry. I didn't mean to make things weird. Just pretend I didn't say anything--" "I'm tired of pretending you didn't say things. The next time you're feeling exhausted, you should come see me." ... When Richard smiled after saying that, I felt like time had stopped. (p.160)
"... you could just call her. I'll give you five minutes." "Call her and then what?" "You figure it out. How stupid are you?" "You're being so mean to me today..." Richard didn't respond. I was so preoccupied with my own problems that I just wanted some distracting small talk, but Richard was being really harsh. Really, it was kind of weird. The normal thing for him to have been doing was telling me to get my act together because I'm at work, but he was following everything I was saying even if he wasn't being very nice about it. (p.175)
You're such a bright and charming young man, with a talent for cooking and a mastery of inappropriate compliments, who can be caring to a fault, but I seem to be the only one who knows it. Truly, it's beyond tragic. A great loss for the world as a whole." Despite what he was saying, it sure didn't feel like a compliment. Richard was, without a doubt, scolding me. He was scolding me while trying to lift my spirits at the same time. ... "... I am also inclined to believe that those efforts would be best spent on people who truly matter to you. Like, for example, prioritizing the woman you hope to make your girlfriend over your boss at your part-time job." (p.198)
"I know you said you don't want to be my special someone and you don't want to leave your mark on me, but you already are someone special to me, and you've left a mark on me that's never going away." ... I knew he was trying to tell me to go to Tanimoto right now. But I had things I wanted to say, too--to him. "You have told me on countless occasions that you're fond of me, but as I explained earlier, I believe your affection is misplaced." "You're saying I'm using you as a substitute, right? That's not funny. Why would I? Trust me, I know just how big of a coward I am." (p.202)
Just rereading these sections hurts me right in the feels ಥ_ಥ I can't wait to read the next volume once it's out.
Living up to the name of ‘light novel’, I find this series so easy and so heartwarming to read. I dont think Ill find myself turning away or getting bored of the series anytime soon for the simple reason that my joy lies in the small nuanced yet moving stories in each chapter. Even with that deadly cliffhanger, its the relationships and emotions explored that keep me going.
oh god. it's been about 2 years since i last read this novel (when i translated it from japanese before there was an english license) and LORD, i forgot how painful this one was at times. cannot wait for novel 4 to be released in english - it's my favorite from the first part of the series
This book is so good but so painful! We continue to follow Seigi's adventures in Jewelry Étranger, but things get more serious. We deal with a group that's using gemstones to scam people and with an auction. Seigi and Richard trolling the scam artists was so much fun. Richard really knows how how act and he scared those scammers well enough. The auction lets us know more about Richard's past, including details about a complicated inheritance and an ex-partner who left him. Seigi continues believing and stating that Richard is the most beautiful person in the world, to a point where even his mom thinks he's dating Richard. He also starts to understand that everytime he thinks of Tanimoto, he also thinks of Richard. He has some supressed feelings for him, that I think will come to the surface now that Richard's missing. Tanimoto comes out as Aromantic and Asexual, which means she doesn't feel sexually or romantically attracted to anyone. So we learn that a relationship with Seigi will not happen, since she sees him only as a great friend. Richard's issues with his family will certainly be the main topic of volume 4. I'm not sure what happened in the past, but he clearly believe's he's unloveable and that's why he thinks Seigi likes him as a replacement for Tanimoto, despite Seigi stating that what he feels for both of them is separate. Even Homura states he didn't think Richard would pass his message to Seigi so he could speak to Tanimoto, since Richard's in love with him. So we can see that Richard likes Seigi so much he's willing to lose him if it makes him happy. Him leaving was so sudden. I wonder what Seigi will do now that he's alone and can't reach Richard. This plot twist is painful and I can't wait for the next volume!
The third volume for The Case Files of Jeweler Richard goes from 0 to 100 so fast. I’ll admit that I was a bit underwhelmed by the first two cases, but boy, did those last two blow me away! I could write a master’s thesis on the scene from page 192-205. If you know, you know…
This volumes gives us a lot more insight into Richard’s past, including his past romantic relationship. Things did not end well, leading Richard to give Seigi some VERY bad advice. Despite my frustration with Richard, especially in “Angelic Aquamarine,” it’s still a joy to keep peeling back the glamorous facade Seigi has built up around him. Richard is flawed, and Seigi is an unreliable narrator. Shocker.
We also get a bonus story from the perspective of someone who isn’t Seigi! It was breath of fresh air, honestly. And interesting to see someone else describe Richard. Volume 4 gives us three bonus stories, so I’m going to jump straight in!
The series just keeps getting better and better. There was so much character development in this volume, and I am once again in awe of the way intentions are layered and revealed. We’re given just enough to ignite curiosity, yet it’s always buried under a wonderful layer of humanity - people rarely come right out and say exactly how they feel, especially when it makes them vulnerable, and that complication is in full force this volume. It’s delicious intrigue for the mind, and I can’t wait to see the direction the next one takes us in.
4.5/5 Holy cow! I loved this book. There was so much feeling this time around, and each new emotion was conveyed perfectly. These characters are each individually intriguing, fleshed out, and relatable. So close to being a 5/5, but I think, by the way it's headed, something even better is coming so I'll hold off for now. It's just perfect.
the way I already knew everything that was going to happen and yet I was shattered at the end of angelic aquamarine says a lot. I can't wait to see how the novel address the upcoming events
Damn you, Richard!!! I knew the ending was coming, AND YET
(I'm actually very excited for the next volume, because Seigi and Richard's relationship will finally start evolving. I haven't read this part in the novel yet, only saw the anime adaptation of it, so I'm very much looking forward to it.)
The cases in this book were pretty light and interesting, the third one involving a jade and an auction the most... how to say it, it was incredibly adorable to watch Richard and Seigi interact in public like that. There was drama, there was tension, there was some plotting, but most of all, there was Seigi being very protective of Richard and acting like a dutiful boyfriend supplying his partner with royal milk tea flavoured sweets whenever he began to feel moody and irritated.
Richard was prickly as a hedgehog, his eyes fixed intently on the man’s back as he left. Not good. Especially when I couldn’t just toss a sweet into his mouth.
(I'm actually on the verge of attempting to make royal milk tea for myself. Those two don't go a single chapter without mentioning this damned tea, and I need to taste it at least once and see what's Richard going on about.)
Their relationship definitely progressed in this volume, and we FINALLY got a small glimpse into Richard's past. Maybe even something about his real-or-not name and his past romantic partner. I can never get enough of the way he and Seigi talk to each other, to be honest. There's something very very special about them.
“…So if I told you that I would never make you pudding or milk agar jelly again, and that I would keep putting the wrong amount of sugar in your royal milk tea, would you fire me?” I said in the most threatening voice I could muster. Richard just chuckled softly. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard such an adorable threat before.”
“And just what kind of person do you take me for, then?” “An Emperor of Sweets who has very extreme opinions about royal milk tea, can be a handful sometimes, but also has a cute side. I think that about covers it.” “How is it that you’re so…comfortable calling someone ‘cute’ to their face like that?”
And let's not forget:
“I hope you don’t regret it.” “Huh? Regret what?” “Saying that you like me.”
And then we got Richard coming out in his tuxedo, looking stunning and immaculate, and Seiji just staring at him without words. And even though they had company, Richard actually provoked him into complimenting him. MY GOODNESS.
“When you see something impossibly beautiful, it takes your breath away. That’s why I didn’t say anything.” “You’ve developed quite the silver tongue.” “You only have yourself to blame for that. I could just say you look incredibly handsome, but you always look incredibly handsome, so I had to get creative. Happy now?”
Why are you even surprised that the third person there immediately thought that their relationship was definitely more than just boss and an employee when you talk like that? Never change, Seigi.
“You’re doing it again. How long is it going to take for you to get used to looking at me?” “It doesn’t matter how used to you I am. I was just spooked by how beautiful you looked.”
ONE LAST QUOTE. I'm sorry for the excess of them, but at the same time, I really am not. There are so many to choose from one - I'm not used to highlighting so many sections of my books.
After a few moments, Richard set the paper down. “May I share my thoughts?” “Go ahead.” “You’re an idiot.”
Only Richard would start formally like "May I share my thoughts?" and then continue that with simply telling Seigi he's an idiot. How far you've come, Richard.
To begin with, I don't like the writing style that much (feels kinda flat) but it's okay. The worst thing is characters or mainly the MC who is (unfortunately) also the narrator of the story. I thought that after 2 volumes and 6 months time during his job in the shop we would see some character development. But we don't.
First story 2/5🌟 Sorry but this marriage (like our mc has stated) it's not cute. I won't go into details but they are both annoying. Also, I get that you (Seiji) are "in love" with Tanimoto but PLEASE spare me your useless thoughts. After 2 volumes I really have enough reading how angelic and perfect she is. If you love her so much go on a date or smh. Moreover, again, 2 volumes, this is the third and it still feels like he doesn't have an ounce of respect for Richard (the only likeable character imo). It's really getting boring.
Second story 4.5/5🌟 I guess that it would be much more pleasurable if we get this book from Richard's perspective but well... Also, please stop treating Richard like some pretty doll! In overall, this story was much more engaging in anime but nevertheless, it was still really interesting.
Third story 4.5-5/5🌟 The story was really interesting, not to mention the poor waitress. Although, Seiji could afford to treat Hiromi a bit better (and Richard, too; he didn't even called him a friend; and yes. Tanimoto. We get it, ugh).
Fourth story 1.5/5🌟 I was really uncomfortable with their ideas of love and marriage. In addition, nothing gets resolved between Tanimoto and Seiji and it times it looked like both of them have emotional intelligence as a brick. Hope that they will just stay friends and that's all imo. Half star for a nice cliffhanger.
Extra 4/5🌟 I prefered her as a narrator than Seiji (though why not Richard, it would be nice to have his perspective!). I feel sad though because we probably won't hear about her ever again :(.
If there are stones that had a special effect when they’re given as a gift, I think you could say the same for human kindness—just like how the person you like telling you they love you can have a special effect on you.
I don't know how to feel about this installment in the series. I liked the different cases, except for perhaps the last one. We definitely see more progress in terms of Richard and Seigi's relationship. The two are obviously fond of one another, and there are multiple instances throughout the book where people believe they're together.
I liked that we see more of Richard here. Instead of being annoyed or simply beautiful, we see him treat Seigi with softness, get defensive, even angry. He's slowly opening up more and more, and Seigi savors every new closeness in their friendship.
That being said, Seigi still describes his feelings for Richard as mostly gratitude towards an elder brother. This is the same person who thinks time stops when Richard smiles at him, mind you. Seigi's feelings for Tanimoto are still strong, and while one of the focuses of this book seems like a final resolution to Seigi and Tanimoto's will they/won't they friendship, the possibility of two of them dating remains woefully unresolved.
Overall, a fun but unsatisfying read. Hopefully the next one is more fulfilling.
I was so excited to read this volume for a variety of reasons. One being because of new cases not shown in the anime; and another being because of the third case about the Jade antique, which was one of my favorite episodes in the show. The novel version was just as great.
Volume 3 of Jeweler Richard both healed and rent my heart, all in ways that reminded me why I love the series. Seigi and Richard had so many moments in all four cases that made them understand each other more, bringing their relationship closer and allowing them to discover new things about themselves. And yet there were equal amounts of moments where they don't quite reach the truth within their conversation because of their own insecurities or doubts, which made me as a reader pine for them to reach out to each other more.
There's a lot of complexity with the circle of recurring characters (both major and minor) by the last case in the book, where things all come to a head for our two protagonists. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next volume, because I need to experience the resolve of where things left off!
Also, I really loved Tanimoto's character in this book even more than I did before. She might have been my favorite person in this volume. She opens up so much about a side of herself not often recognized or acknowledged by most. She's just super.
Like I said, I'm itching to dive right into the next volume!
''all this sweets-lover ever did was smile. i didn't think i'd react this way to it anymore, but, alas, i was up against a man of impossible beauty. as i remained struck dumb and trying desperately not to have a heart attack, the smile fell from richard's face. he let out a frustrated sigh.
'you're doing it again. how long is it going to take for you to get used to looking at me?'
'it doesn't matter how used to you i am. i was just spooked by how beautiful you looked.'''
This is more of a 3.5 than a 4 star, because the book is quite frankly not good. Of the first three volumes, it's debatably the worst, which is saying something.
The stories in this volume, up to the end, are largely boring and unremarkable. For some reason this series continues to be a weirdly compelling boring series, mostly driven by the relationship between Seigi and Richard, both of whom make very weird and meaningless remarks about life and people that are meant to sound deep but actually aren't. None of the extra characters in this volume are particularly remarkable, either. The undercover story is actually worse than its adaptation in the anime, because at least the anime has pretty art to stare at. In novel form, it's just kind of painfully bad.
That being said, .
All in all... there are, as usual, good and bad things in this volume. There were fewer typos that I caught than volume 2, but I think at least two. There are still no illustrations outside the cover art (which is pretty). It's again weirdly compelling, so if you watched the anime and want more, this is indeed here to take up some time. I guess I'll give the manga another shot while I wait for volume 4.
A few years ago when i first discovered this series, only three volumes were out in english. It was right before some kind of major mock exam in my school, and I scoured high and low begging for a crumb of a translation so that i could keep procrastinating. Strange, for some reason I always pick up reading again right before exams! But of course, a fully furnished english translation never showed up. So out of desperation, I found a fan-made chinese translation on some old archived blog, and read this volume through google translate. I wasn’t completely sure what was going on, but it was a blast! After 3 years, I came back- lo and behold, 4 new volumes were translated!!!!
Admittedly, the second read- though being much more coherent- wasn’t as exhilarating as reading under the covers mere days before a final exam. Despite that, I had lots of fun chasing after Richard, and the intense development of his and Seigi’s muddled relationship made for an entertaining adventure. Highly recommend!
I adore the Jeweler Richard manga, so I grabbed one of the light novels at random just to give it a try. I'd never tried light novels before but I think they're just not for me. It was really obvious that some things were lost in translation which made for an awkward reading experience, and unfortunately, for this volume in particular, it's the one with the aquamarine storyline which I really don't like. Like, they all need to just leave Tanimoto the fck alone. It is not a phase. Stop telling her the right person just hasn't come along yet. That's exactly like telling a lesbian "oh you just haven't met the right man" or telling a gay guy "you just need to meet the right woman". I hate it. Wish I'd picked a different volume. That's the ONE storyline I don't want to consume in all three formats (light novel, manga, anime) and I ended up doing exactly that to myself anyway 🤦
*4.5 // we're finally easing into a more overarching story from the mini-stories the first two volumes were composed of. it goes without saying that my favorite case this time is the fourth one. seigi has definitely progressed more as a character, although he still has a ways to go when it comes to understanding tanimoto's feelings regarding romance. i do appreciate his thoughtfulness & sincerity (even if somewhat misplaced, at times), and i'm looking forward to seeing him grow more as a person.
richard! you canNOT convince me that he wasn't projecting onto seigi during that conversation. i really do love reading their relationship progress (even if seigi keeps referring to richard as an older brother) and seeing them open up more to each other (especially richard!!). so excited to reread the next volume!!! it just keeps getting better hehe
The way this volume ends!!! Aaaah!!! I already know the gist of what would happen next thanks to the anime, but I still can't wait until the next volume is out in English!
I found it odd though that the translation spells 通り ("doori") as in the name of streets as "douri" though. I felt like somebody has edited doori out because they didn't know how it's actually written in Japanese... Anyway, it's just a minor complaint. The whole book was still very enjoyable to read.
Finally, Richard has a back story. And there was more sprinkles of hints in this one. In comparison, the previous three books seem disjointed as in each chapter was story and each book was a standalone. Things happen but there was not clear overarching storyline. This books seems to the be start of an overarching story.
I am annoyed with how much Seigi comments on Richard's beauty. We're 3 books in. We get it. He is the most beautiful man. We need to move on. Be less shallow.
Volume 3 played with my emotions in the most delightful yet cruel way. The first two episodes left me floating on air, grinning like a fool, only to have my heart shattered in the episode Angelic Aquamarine. Where is Richard planning to go? What’s happening, and why won’t he tell Seigi anything? Someone, please, give me Volume 4 as soon as possible!
Things seem to be starting to happen here, but the novel ends with a rather surprising cliffhanger, and the story is left dangling, because I find no more of the series available for Kindle. Perhaps the next novel will appear in due course.
