CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

Just as depressing as ever. It's really hard to read this manga, at least for me. The art is amazing, really stunning, but the story is so dark that even the small humorous bits here and there don't help. Reading about Yasha and Ashura's travels is like watching a train wreck because you know that everybody they meet will die, as it was foretold, it's just a question of how. There really needs to be a big pay-off at the very end to balance all the suffering.

I feel like this story needs to slow down. Lots of things happen after the other. Some characters show up, suddenly have deep relationships after 5 pages and then die. It's supposed to be super tragic, but apart from thinking a character is nice, it was impossible to develop any kind of attachment to most of them.
One character just decides that yes, he will become king and get his sealed sword, like his family wants him to, because... he wants to fight another character? And then instantly becomes friends with Ashura. All of that in just a few pages.

The exception was Ashura's aunt, who told us the story of her twin sister. She was really interesting and gave us some exposition on Ashura's mother, who is a horrible human being, but actually a really interesting character. She also kills cute birds, which is another very CLAMP thing to do. It almost felt like home!
I also think that I'll actually like Ashura's brother. I'm a sucker for the one perfectly kind character amongst his evil family.
Yes another character with potential is Karura-Oh, whose love and devotion to her sister made me feel something for one of these characters beyond mild interest for the first time.
And Kujaku remains amusing and mysterious.

...

Okay, let's just say that Yasha-Oh is just simply super boring. He isn't even pretty enough for me to care about.
Why are all the girls and their mothers (literally) in love with him? He's super flat, even when he's showing emotions. They could just carry a cardboard cutout of him around and there wouldn't be any difference.
(At least the hammy evil king dude is amusing in his constant shirtlessness.)
I feel like I'm supposed to find Yasha-Oh/Ashura adorable and root for them to be together forever and ever but... I couldn't honestly care less. Oops?
