Kongming solves the office problem, finally, but what’s Eiko been up to? More like, what hasn’t she, as her efforts land her in the hospital. After a sweet escape, it’s on to Summer Sonia at last! But has Kongming put the cart before the horse by betting the farm on Eiko?
Phew, now that’s what I’m talking about. That last volume had me worried, but after we get over that whole host club storyline, our new characters settle into the background and let the leads return in force.
Seriously, the new cast aren’t adding a ton and going back to basics this time feels like a breath of fresh air. Shino’s turn from obsessive to obsessive-but-over-someone-else is amusing enough, but I appreciate the author’s choice to settle her into the background for the moment.
Shoji likewise gets benched, although I did like his one moment at Summer Sonia where Eiko finally pitches a fit over a pitched tent and having to deal with Three Kingdoms stuff non-stop in addition to her career. That was a fun bit of near-meta humour.
Before all this, we get a little of Eiko just being herself during the hospital, when she faces off with a cranky old man and slowly defrosts his heart. It’s a side story, but a good one, and the denouement with Kongming butting in on Eiko’s just reward was clever.
The rest of this story is classic Kongming in all the right ways. We get another ruthless villain, this time in the form of a real phoney, who claims to be making his own music and is crazy popular, but isn’t as smart as he thinks he is.
Real ‘spoiled brat’ vibes, which you can totally tell because even the manga calls him a rich prick. His attempts to ruin Eiko’s performances at Summer Sonia are enough to make it very easy to hope he gets punched in the side of the head.
There’s also a ton of laidback chill to enjoy along with all this, since Eiko decides to bring AZALEA along for the ride as well and even if they are mostly there for service, it’s pretty awesome seeing some older faces come back and the dynamic between them all adds a little extra.
Genuinely, I’m quite looking forward to this next section - we’ve had the tease of Summer Sonia looming over the story for ages now and, having arrived, everything looks to be going wrong for our heroes. Kongming works best when he has a good villain to best and that’s very true here.
Now, Kongming obviously has a plan, I am pretty sure the results are just as obvious if you consider reading the historical notes about a particular stratagem, but watching this stuff go into action is half the fun. It should be a real treat next time out.
4 stars - 3 stars wrapping up old stuff, 4 for the hospital arc, 5 for the new arc. Let’s meet in the middle and call it a day, but a good day that’s more interesting than the previous one, if I wanted to strangle the metaphor to death.
