In a futuristic Neo-Tokyo, crime is rising rapidly in the wake of a new generation of super-drugs capable of enhancing the user's physical and mental abilities. Hajime Tsukumo is a new recruit on a federal task force trained to go after these powered-up criminals. Now he must team up with Zeroichi, a so-called Hanger looking to reduce his own jail sentence in exchange for helping to take down these chemically-boosted bad guys.
Hanger manga vol. 1: An action-packed cyberpunk manga with some Fantastically well developed romance to boot with including my new favourite genre of romance, boy's love
The calendar is gone and has been replaced by the anno scientia. The society is focused on science and preventing a great plague from happening once again. All humans are augmented or adapted with implants to make them better - but some become obsessed with this. What I find fascinating is that implantation of technology has become an indie fascination and obsession, so this isn't far from the truth.
In this futuristic Neo-Tokyo, crime is rising rapidly in the wake of a new generation of super-drugs capable of enhancing the user's physical and mental abilities. So hangers and their handlers deal with these baddies.
I'll admit it. I enjoy light BL or any romance - but it must never be at the foreground of the story; it should be there to enhance the story (usually in a fantasy or sci-fi setting). However, I usually just request manga on NG because well, it's manga.
Now here's the interesting part - the handlers are like normal policemen whereas the hangers are ex "druggers". By working with the police to capture other druggers, they get years shaved off their prison sentence. Enter Zeroichi, who just happens to have a five hundred year prison sentence and absolutely no memory of his past life. You can imagine what kind of moral dilemmas hangers go through as they have to capture or kill those who they were once akin to.
Zeroichi's handler is Tsukumo, a soft-spoken and kind young man with a heart of gold. He's stuck with a mountain of debt accumulated due to his now-dead mother. And what's worse is, Tsukumo suffers from the very illness his mother succumbed to.
Tsukumo: "Despite many years trying to fight it, the disease finally took my mother. When she passed away, all I had was the massive debt accrued from all the hospital bills."
Zeroichi protects and kicks ass while Tsukumo is just an absolute sweetheart. The action sequences are so fantastically drawn and I cannot believe that this manga hasn't gotten popular. It's more of a shounen-ai than a yaoi, so I'd recommend this to just about anyone who doesn't mind grown men kissing.
"Hey, don't talk to me like that asshole!." "And so we became partners and started working together." "At least, that's how it was supposed to go."
But that's what I love about this manga - it manages to have you enraptured with the story while still absolutely smitten by the tension between Tsukumo and Zeroichi simultaneously. And the aforementioned attraction is not just sexual, but character-driven. Zeroichi treats Tsukumo like shit, but the banter is fantastic. Zeroichi is tall, dark and mysterious - just how some of you like it ;).
Zeroichi is more advanced and powerful than any other drugger ever before recorded - which is why he is so important in helping catch other druggers. I absolutely love the moral struggle Zeroichi goes through as he has to eliminate those who are just like him - addicts; probably people just trying to find a way out of a world gone mad or just plain shitheads
"You know there isn't a single guy who's lasted more than two months with me."
The placement of the speech bubbles is also very well done and it really adds to the story and tension.
I just love both men because:
1) They have great backstories and character development. 2)They are so grumpy! (except sometimes Tsukumo is kind on the inside) 3)The romance I suspect is blooming is awesome! It's a slow burner and it's built on tension, irritation and intrigue. Zeroichi sees Tsukumo as weak. I just love these interactions! And this is coming from someone who has never read a romance novel in her life.
There are so many cool tidbits about the characters and universe we discover - and that's how you do world-building, ladies and gents. Bit by bit, not too much but not too little.
My ship sailed away with my heart. When Tsukumo gets hurt, Zeroichi calls for 24/7 witness protection, which comes in the form of Zeroichi protecting Tsukumo 24/7 and so, needs to live with him, I'm fangirling too much.
Side-not: Another another team of 'bounty hunters' are introduced - both Hanger and Keeper named Hibiki (a pain-in-the-ass know it all ex-drugger) and Hashima is a sweetheart and a bit of a tease. There are not only rivalries and tension between hanga]er and keeper but between couples! I friggen love this! And when you find out about Hibiki and Hashima's backstories I guarantee you'll shed at least one tear for their loyalty and dedication to each other.
And so the baddies get bigger, the romance gets stronger, the world-building more intricate, the humour funnier and the action more packed. I really, really recommend this book to everyone who loves manga. The only reason I dropped a star is that I felt that there is something bigger at play that could have been introduced earlier on.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This felt a like 90s in its drug panic! Drug users are all violent criminals! assumptions, but that aside it was an entertaining enemies-to-friends(kinda) buddy cop adventure. Think 48 Hours as a long-term cop/criminal team-up, leading I gather in some gay direction.
This look like a promising new series. The art and characters are gorgeous, the world building & concept are also super cool.
In a future Tokyo, a new drug was created to enhance the humans abilities. People have become obsess with it and crime is rising. Team Hajime & Zeroichi are working for the security service, their job is to stop the “drugger”. Hajime is a rookie and become the other man Keeper, since Zeroichi is a criminal with no memory (what they call a Hanger.) The two partners do not get along at the beginning.
Hajime get kidnap because his blood has strange proprieties. Once he gets out of the situation, the bureau assigns his Hanger as a 24 hours a day bodyguard. The keeper think living together will bring him closer to his charge, and hopefully make him understand him better. Those two are not the only team of keeper/hanger. There is also Hibiki & Hashima, who become some sort of rivals to our main duo. The two men share a complicated past and Hajime cannot help but to compare his relationship with Zeroichi to them.
I am hook and cannot wait for volume 1. I am really interest to find out more about Zeroichi and the progress of his partnership with Hajime. So far, the two characters have strong personalities and a lot of charisma together. There is no rush romance what so ever, which I found is a nice thing, I am pretty sure this will be more develop in further volumes.
They had me at the cover. I was so afraid this was going to be a circumstance where the cover is what I was looking for, but the story was gonna suck. It didn't, so I was pumped!
The story takes place in a futuristic Neo-Tokyo where advances in technology have created a super-drug that increases the physical and mental abilities of it's users. A new task force has been created to combat these powerful criminals. Hajime Tsukomo is a new recruit in this task force, and he's been partnered with Zeroichi, a hanger. A hanger is an individual who lost control while on this new drug, and has accrued a large amount of jail time. Hangers help in exchange for reducing their sentences. Each hanger experiences an extreme side effect of expending their energies, which largely effects the relationships with their partners.
I thoroughly enjoyed this manga. There were times I thought the mangaka sacrificed plot for relationship building of side characters. I really wanted to spend more time with Tsukomo and Zeroichi, and less time with Hibiki and Hashima (who deserve their own story arc at some point). The art was so good! I will legit buy a copy of the physical book to add to my manga collection - and I can hardly wait for volume 2 to come out in September!
As it stands, this volume doesn't come out until the 17th of July - so get yo pre-order on!!
(I received an advanced digital copy of this book from the publishers - through NetGalley)
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own*
I don't usually read yaoi, so I'm not sure what the genre is up to these days, but I ended up really liking this one. It was difficult to read because of the format it was sent in, but I'm not letting that color my judgement.
I really liked the concept, the story and how the characters are growing or opening up together. The action was really cool too. The only start that really started making me feel uncomfortable is the second pair of Hanger/Keeper we meet and how they have to handle the Hanger's need to recharge. Just seemed a bit... :/ not okay to me, until after they were honest with each other. Anyhow, the story is interesting enough, so I plan on continuing this.
I saw the pretty art and bought this manga expecting to see bishounen with just enough hint of flirtation to spark my imagination (like "Free"). What I didn't realize is that it actually is the BL genre (per the stamp on the back cover) and there was even a brief smut scene, which was surprising considering there's no "explicit" parental advisory and the manga wasn't plastic-sealed.
On the whole I thought this manga was good. The characters have unique personalities and individual abilities that get more interesting as the story evolves and more of their facets are revealed. I will say that I typically prefer yaoi with 25% plot and 75% romance, and this was more like 90% action and fight scenes and 10% romantic potential.
The main character is a rookie cop, freshly assigned to work with a "Hanger," a drug-addicted criminal. These partnerships are common on the police force. Drugs in this world infuse humans with special powers (super strength, the ability to heal others, etc.), so not only are Hangers physically superior to most humans, but they also have knowledge of other criminals and their activities. So they trade their help in catching other drug-addicted crooks for reduced sentences. Most of them have hundreds of years to spend in custody, so they work hard to try and have some kind of life outside of prison some day. The cops (or "Keepers") they partner with sort of "control" them with a bracelet called a "lock." If the Hanger gets too far away from his or her Keeper, they will be incapacitated (or killed?) by the device. So it is in the criminal Hangers' best interests to play nice and work companionably with their cop Keepers.
For me, the main character tends to fade into the background. He's a cookie-cut figure, a rookie cop who doesn't know anything about anything and therefore has to be mentored and is often teased by everyone around him. He doesn't have a lot of his own personality as of yet. His Hanger, on the other hand, is very mysterious. He has no memories prior to his arrest, though the reason for that is not explained in volume 1 of the manga. (And for some reason I am suspicious as to whether he even has amnesia or if he's lying about it, because he always gets quiet when someone mentions it...) It's kind of adorable that he fights off his addiction cravings with food, because he's always hungry and likes for the rookie to prepare his meals. Which is about the only "romantic" thing going on between them at this point.
Halfway through volume 1, a second Hanger/Keeper couple is introduced. Sometimes I found them annoying, but they grew on me. The Hanger is a major flirt. His Keeper is the nerdy, rude genius type. I kind of have a thing for those standoffish characters with glasses who condescend to everyone around them. lol They are an actual couple and have had feelings for each other since they were in college together, before things went south and one of them turned to a life of crime. They are the more interesting couple, all things considered, and they're the ones that have a love scene in this volume, because this Hanger has to control his drug cravings with sex.
All in all, an interesting setup. Like I said, I prefer a lot more romance than this volume delivered, but the world is complex and required a lot of building and explanation up to now. I'm hoping the story heats up in the next couple of volumes. I can forgive a slow start when the storytelling is as rewarding as this one, and the manga felt really long and took me three sittings to finish reading. It doesn't feel like an info-dump, though, because everything is shown, not just told, to the reader. You get your money's worth.
Hirotaka Kisaragi is a must-buy mangaka for me. And this book didn't disappoint. A sci-fi story set in Tokyo in the near future about the so called hangers, convicted druggers with special abilities, who - together with their cop keepers - go after other criminal druggers whose strength and powers no one else can match. Great story, amazing drawings.
I enjoyed this, but the plot was so similar to a book I’ve recently read.
Off the charts violent and aloof man used by the military to take out the bad guys. He needs a handler and although they initially don’t get along, there is a spark.
Unfortunately VERY reminiscent to Evenfall by Santino and Ais.
Purchased on a whim, Hanger has been a pleasant surprise. A futuristic buddy-cop adventure, it adds BL into the mix by introducing romantic possibilities into the lives of each set of cop partners. Seeing what a mangaka might do with the power dynamics on the uke-seme trope is part of the fun and value of BL. Here, Hajime Tsukomo has all the uke visual tropes but as a “Keeper” he has all the power by being in command of Zeroichi, a “Hanger” or convict whose sentence for nano-tech drug use and other crimes can be slowly worked off by cooperating with the police. Tsukomo wears a control bracelet identical to one Zeroichi wears, except that if Zeroichi strays too far from Tsukomo he'll start shutting down. Still, Tsukomo refuses to control Zeroichi’s mind through the bracelets, and his valuing the convict as a person (along with being a good cook) has Zeroichi becoming very protective in classic seme style. There's a lot to explore in this relationship, and I'm looking forward to future volumes. There's another Keeper-Hanger pairing in this book, this time two guys clearly in love but whose lives became crushed by a criminal attack on them after college. Once introduced, the overall storyline becomes less breezy and more interesting as elements of competition and mutual support emerge between the two sets of Keeper-Hangers. The art is competent and effective, with some impressive fight scenes with the requisite rushing lines of destructive force used effectively in each panel composition. I've ordered the next two volumes. While I don’t know this series is something I'll fall in love with (like, for instance, the “I Hear The Sunspot” series, which for me sets a standard for everything that manga can be), it's entertaining enough.
CW: Sexual assault (with a side couple), Family in Hospital, Pandemic, Violence, Blood, Suicide Ideation
This was such a surprising read. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting after a pandemic killed a large number of the population. Drugs become rampantly overused, and the government combats this with nanobodies that enhance the user to fight against the drugged-up criminals. Our main character Hajime works for an investigation bureau, and he is assigned to work with one of their captives, Zeroichi. This man has a 500-year sentence in prison, because capital punishment no longer exists. They work together to catch criminals and end up growing closer. This was surprisingly entertaining and complex. I love how each character has something to fight for. Hajime truly loves Zeroichi, and their relationship was beautiful. I'm very much looking forward to the next volume.
It's been a really long time since I was able to get into an action manga with a romantic angle that was this much fun! And full of angst! Gosh I can't even remember! Was it Rurouni Kenshin!? Dang I'm old! 😂 Any way I am really into Hajime and Zeroichi. They are too adorable. Can't wait for more!
**I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review** **It is 2.5 stars**
Thank you Netgalley and Tokyopop for letting me review this book.
Before Thoughts: To anyone who's following you already know I love BL. It's a guilty pleasure for me...so me picking up this book should come as no surprise to you. Especially since it hints at some BL elements.
And not to mention you have so many things that are to happen in the plot so I sure hope I can enjoy it for that reason too.
Review: Read on:06/23/18
Plot: In the world of Neo-Tokyo there are people who become power-boosted by special chemicals and it's up to Hajime and other officers of the federal tasks force to apprehend the power-boosted citizens to prevent any damage or destruction to the city.
There's not much info. about who is distributing the super drugs/special chemicals. All they know is the drugs enhance the physical and mental abilities of citizens who happen to get their hands on it.
Character(s): Zeroichi: A hanger that is only teaming up with Hajime reduce his 500 year jail sentence. He will likely be the one to go off track of their missions whenever they need to go after some chemical power-boosted criminals. He has severe amnesia and really likes trying to piss off Hajime even though it won't help him much on reducing his sentence as a hanger.
Hajime: The new recruit to the federal task force and a new keeper. And is referred to as watchdog by Zeroichi since as a keeper he watches over Zeroichi his hanger. His mother died in the hospital and left him with debt from the hospital bills. He also has a special blood condition, making his blood very dangerous to criminals that use the super drugs/nano machines.
Final thoughts: Oof the idea is interesting but the format is terrible. First off when you open it it's starts from the end instead of the beginning, and second the text and scenes can be barely legible.
I mean honestly I've seen fan scanlations of manga online that are more legible and easier to read than the adobe digital editions format of this book.
I'm hoping that the final paperback format isn't this bad. I'm hoping that it'll actually be easy for the readers to read.
Content warnings: Drug use, violence, dubious consent
In this opening volume, we're introduced to the world of the Hanger program and their various federal agents. The character designs are cool and, though everyone wears the same uniforms, it's easy to track who's who.
Hajime as a protagonist really works for me. He has his own goals, backstory, and convictions. The impenetrable wall of mystery that is Zeroichi works really well in contrast, but they don't exist in order to drive their own plots.
The fight scenes are also super energetic, leaving enough space for emotions and world-building. I'll definitely be continuing this one.
More of a 3.5 star rating; I decided to read this manga because the plot of it reminded me of the series: Psycho-Pass, and I am happy that I decided to read this first volume. I love the dynamic between Zeroichi and Hajime, as well as the mystery surrounding Zeroichi’s background. It was also really interesting seeing the dynamics between the other Keeper and Hangers, as well as seeing those other characters interacting with Zeroichi and/or Hajime. Overall, I’m very intrigued going into the next volume and reading this manga series.
I read the review before I bought this book, and it comes out I made a good decision. This is what I looked for in BL stories, more about relationship development then selling sex scenes. The characters' personality are developed gradually along the story, including the side characters. Highly recommended. Can't wait for the next book.
Everything was unexpectedly decent until r*pe was considered acceptable for someone to deal with as self-punishment for a perceived mistake that led to someone they care about occasionally becoming an uncontrollable r*pist. I mean, others imply it’s not okay, but they just let it happen?? I mean?? Do I have to say more??
4.5 stars. This was unexpectedly amazing. Unique worldbuilding, gorgeous art, and most of all, complex characterization. I'm still emotional about Hashima and Hibiki, whose heartbreaking relationship is currently overshadowing the main pairing, even though I love them too.
Definitely enjoyed it! The story is unique and interesting! The characters are really good. The story is fast paced and exciting! I will definitely get the rest of the volumes.
