The dungeon core, Will, has defended himself and his allies from the latest Voidbringer ploy, gaining time in which to grow and expand. More floors, more monsters, newer loot—all in the service of acquiring power to finish off the Voidbringers once and for all... and being the greatest core of all time.
But Will has a problem. He can’t figure out how reach his enemies in order to finish them, and they are preparing their next devastating blow.
Will’s dwarven allies, the Kingdom of Daruk, need to recover from the shattering of their capital and the death of their king. Gar and his team must navigate increasingly complicated internal politics while preparing themselves for possible additional rounds of war with their neighbors, or attacks upon their beloved dungeons.
Thankfully, Will has finally reached Level Twenty—and now he must brave a soul quest of great difficulty to obtain Meta magic. Once he gains it, he’ll be able to bend the very rules of magic, potentially solving everyone's problems, even the Kingdom of Daruk’s. But first he has to succeed.
A Dungeon Core story, the fourth in the Dungeon of Stories Saga.
I sincerely hope the author takes quite a bit of time with the next bit. This is a wonderful segues into another series of books. A solid outline with a well developed story will ensure another three to four books of five star quality. Otherwise haste will indeed make waste.
The first half of the book is basically recap with a soul quest that felt pretty lame. It was like an attempt at magic philosophy but can be summed up as "we all work together, go team!" The 2nd half was an interesting take on how Will continues to break dungeon norms. Unfortunately all of the actual dungeon delving scenes are boring as the dungeons are intentionally nice so there is no real risk at all. The finale was fun but Will and the others keep falling for the same tropes and scraping by on some luck. The ending is interesting but opens up the world a lot, so much so that I worry about there being too many tangents in the future.
Mistakes: I only found one and listed it on GoodReads. Very well written and edited.
Plot: We have a lot of growth and a dungeon council is formed, but we also learned of bigger threats as well.
Characters: Good growth. I got a chuckle out of the fact that side characters much stronger than Gar and his group got ripped apart while they went on to accomplish whatever needed doing.
8/10 Looking forward to book five. Will need a recap for that book for sure.
I enjoyed reading this book very much and I recommend this book to anyone who like LitRPG and progression type of books with lots of action and dungeons.
Stellar work once again from John Stovall! Lots of action and adventure, dungeon building and delving, monsters and magic! Looking forward to the next one!
