LaQuette writes sexy, stylish, and sensational romance. That means she writes sentimental and steamy stories (like Hallmark movies, but with a lot of sex) featuring at least one MC who always keeps it cute.
This Brooklyn native writes unapologetically bold, character-driven stories. Her novels feature diverse ensemble casts who are confident in their right to appear on the page.
If she's not writing, she's probably trying on or looking for her next great makeup find. She is the 2016 Author of the Year Golden Apple Award winner & the 2016 Write Touch Readers Award winner. Writing—her escape from everyday madness— has always been a friend and source of comfort.
At the age of sixteen, she read her first romance novel and realized the genre was missing something: people that looked and lived like her. As a result, her characters and settings are always designed to provide positive representations of people of color and various marginalized communities living their best lives and experiencing joy.

First of all, that COVER! The gown, the pose, the pursed lips make you want to see what is inside. And it does not disappoint. I love fairytale retellings and LaQuette did so with her own twist. From beginning to end, I loved the transformation! This story was fun, fun, fun and it goes without saying, HOT. The chemistry was sizzling between these two! Enjoyed it!
A serious-minded doctor of psychology dons mask and gown for one evening to be someone she’s not and captivates an easy going wealthy rancher who is determined to know the woman behind the mask. LaQuette is steadily becoming a go-to author for me when it comes to contemporary romance with her heart-felt situations, engaging characters, and romantic relationships.
Cinderella Masquerade is a standalone romance attached to a series written by various authors. There is a connection to setting and a loose connection to past characters.
Dr. Zanai James is persuaded to let go just for one night when a sexy red gown and mask allow her to show more of herself than she feels comfortable showing to anyone besides her best friend. Between her oppressive family and past experiences of people not appreciating her quiet, studious, and serious side and using her hidden exciting nature against her when they did, she keeps to herself and hides behind a book to avoid being hurt. Then Jayden Lattimore is captivated by the mysterious Red Queen on the dance floor and like a true prince charming uses her piece of lost jewelry to hunt down the woman who wore it. He has no idea why one night with the lady got to him, but the easygoing man who sweetly flirts, has a good time, and moves on is suddenly intent on showing Zanai that she’s something special and he wants to explore their attraction.
As can be presumed from the title and the blurb, this was a Cinderella retelling. But, in true LaQuette fashion, it digs a little deeper and introduces a bright, intelligent, and emerging sexy powerful woman who has a fab bestie and an abhorrent family. Zanai knows her stuff when it comes to her career, but it takes Jayden’s patient and consistent work on their relationship to believe there is more and that a woman like her can capture the interest of a man like him.
This is a light and easy romance for the most part and I liked the surround of friends and romantic encounters. The conflict was mostly Zanai believing in herself and the relationship. I was cheering for her and appreciated the charming Jayden being a nice romantic opposite for her and loved seeing her confront her awful dad and family finally.
All in all, this hit the spot and I enjoyed the light drama, sexiness, and quick read of it. Look forward to seeing their best friends have their story maybe next. Recommended to those who want a contemporary romance to relax to maybe for a free fall afternoon.
I rec’d an eARC through Netgalley to read in exchange for an honest review.
My full review will post at Books of My Heart on Nov 9th.
In LaQuette’s Cinderella Masquerade, Texas Cattleman’s Club: Ranchers and Rivals #7, a wealthy player tries to seduce a nerdy bookworm out of her protective shell but instead ends up falling for her. I love LaQuette’s vivid and detailed description, colorful and authentic-sounding dialogue, complex and well-developed characters, and the banter, intimacy, and sexy interactions between the hero and heroine.
I am genuinely surprised by how quickly and effortlessly Jayden discovers Zanai’s identity. However, it’s pretty cool because most of the novel focuses on the development of their relationship. I love how deeply Jayden falls for Zanai and how protective he becomes of her. Laquette pens a lovely romance about Zanai and Jayden evolving with their relationship—because of each other’s presence in their lives. Zanai discovers her own strength and is empowered to stand up for herself and what she wants with her controlling and emotionally abusive father. Zanai helps Jayden to feel comfortable letting down his guard and sharing his true self, which he’s kept hidden for so long.
Laid back and easy-going, Jayden is a wealthy playboy/player who has grown bored with social events and society women. But underneath the façade he presents to the world lurks a quiet intensity and a longing for more. After being blown away and captivated by a sexy, masked red queen he dances with at the Texas Cattleman’s Club’s Annual Ball, he becomes obsessed with finding her. She’s different from the women he’s used to being around. Little does he know she’s been right in front of him this whole time.
A nerdy, socially awkward, and self-protective Black girl from Brooklyn, Zanai doesn’t quite fit in with Royal’s wealthy society. Although she’s beautiful, intelligent, accomplished, and compassionate, she hides her true self because of self-doubt from her experiences as the child of a toxic parent and with people who don’t get her or her interests. With her Ph.D. in Psychology, she works with neurodivergent kids.
Jayden is drawn to Zanai’s quick intelligence, honest and straightforward personality, willingness to speak freely with him, and depth of character. Zanai finds Jayden’s quiet intensity and disregard for what others think about him intoxicating. However, she’s sure things can never go beyond the dance and time they shared at the ball because of their differences. So, she chooses to avoid getting too emotionally involved so she can walk away before she can get hurt.
I am thoroughly drawn into the secondary characters’ interactions and the scheme to matchmake Zanai’s best friend Morgan with Ryan—the two spend all their time verbally sparring. And I can’t wait to read their book.
Cinderella Masquerade is a steamy, slightly angsty, funny, sexy, emotional, fast-paced contemporary romance that explores belonging, issues of race and social/financial status, self-discovery, self-confidence/self-esteem, and neurodivergence.

So, if you’re looking for a good modern day Cinderella romance this is the book to read. You will not be disappointed. Morgan Grandin who is Zanai James’s best friend who convinces her to attend to the Texas Cattleman’s Masquerade Ball. Zanai’s life was going pretty good until her mom passed away with mental illness. Zanai’s father remarried and has other children and they do not treat Zanai well; and yet Zanai continues stays in her dad’s home endures whatever is issued out to her. Zanai meets Jayden Lattimore at the Masquerade Ball and Jayden is totally smitten with Zanai and can’t keep “The Lady In Red” off is his mind. Pick up your to find out Jayden pursues Zanai and see how responds to Jayden.
This is a fast paced, easy quick read that is entertaining, family drama, romantic, steamy, tear jerker, realistic, great characters that takes the readers on a romantic journey with Zanai James and Jayden Lattimore.
I received an ARC via NetGalley and HARLEQUIN - Romance (U.S. & Canada), Harlequin Desire and I am leaving my review voluntarily.
I love Cinderella retellings in any shape or form, there is something magical about meeting your prince at a ball. :)
I was very much looking forward to the story and liked the synopsis, but it kind of fell flat for me.
Dr Zanai James is only focused on her work. After a stunning makeover, she finds herself and a masquerade dance and even kisses Jayden Lattimore.
She was hidden by her mask, but Jayden tracked her down quite fast. She doesn't have the best home life, so trusting that someone actually wants her, it's not an easy thing.
And with everyone meddling, it takes a while for trust to build and for them to find their HEA.
thanks to Harlequin Desire and Netgalley for the ARC, all thoughts are my own
Jayden Lattimore doesn’t recognize Dr. Zanai James at the towns Masquerade ball, but her beauty catches his eye. A flirty conversation, sealed with a kiss, leaves Jayden wanting more. It’s like real life Cinderella when Zanai leaves something behind. Being hidden at the masquerade ball is one thing, but interacting in a closer way allows them to truly see each other.
There is more to Jayden than meets the eye. He is about having fun, but he knows one date is not enough. Jayden’s romantic and caring spirit surprised me. He brings out the inner Queen that attracted him to Zanai. I don’t like how Zanai looks down on herself and thinks she isn’t good enough. The most eligible bachelor is interested in her for a reason! He thinks she is gorgeous and has an inner appeal. She is at the top of her game professionally and her inner confidence and passion comes out in how she makes Jayden feel in the bedroom. She is the total opposite in how she feels about herself. Her terrible father plays a part in that.
The story is rounded out by characters who are featured in other books in the series. All in all, this is a great read and I recommend it.
Dr Zania James is convinced to go to a masquerade ball by her friend Morgan. She catches the attention of Jayden Lattimore. He enjoys talking to her at the dance. Zania disappears before Jayden can get her name. He goes on a mission to find her. He is determined to get to know her. Even though he has been around her 15 years, prior to the dance he never really noticed her. Zania is normally very quiet and reserved but she has another side. She is also very funny, a great conversationalist and a kind and compassionate person. The one bad thing is how poorly Zania is treated by her father. I wanted to knee cap. He constantly belittles her. Because of her friend Morgan and Jayden's kindness Zania realizes she realizes her true self. I really enjoyed reading this story.
At first I thought Jayden was trying to change Zanai into a socialite but as the book progressed you notice he simply want Zanai to come out of the self-imposed shell she's had to construct to get through life with her TERRIBLE "family" who treat her like trash as if she isn't a successful Psychologist. Jayden and the Lattimore family are breath of fresh air and the antithesis of everything the James family stands for which is so refreshing because again Zanai's family really deserve to be left in the dust. Overall, it gave similar vibes to the 1997 version of Cinderella with several twists and turns.
Thank you to Harlequin Romance and Net Galley for the opportunity to read this ebook in exchange for an honest review.
When I started reading the book I felt as though it rushed right into the ball storyline without giving us more detail about Zanai (Cinderella) or Jayden (Prince Charming). I wanted more of the backstory for the characters. I didn’t really care for both of the main characters always needing reassurance. They both were well off so to act like the money class was so different didn’t really sit well with me. I did happen to love That Zanai was well established and had money of her own as well as having a brain.
This was my Halloween read this year. Masquerade ball shenanigans instead of atmospheric horror. And I'm glad I jumped in. Fun story, hot sex scenes that fit the relationship, BIG cast of minor characters--appropriate to the scope of the series, I'm just late to the party. Great small-town setting, with truly welcoming hospitality and tolerance of difference. I may have to vacation here again.
Love can brings you to believe in one self. Bullying by a family member can be very discouraging. The one person that should love more then anyone is the one person that can do the most damage. The parent should be in your corner at all times. Goodreads have done it again.
Mystique is a powerful aphrodisiac. Meeting someone who has piqued your interest and then not being able to get to know them is Harding and alluring at the same time. Watching this true love story weather its some was refreshing.
Could not put the book down once I started. Loved the characters. I would have loved to see the downfall of her dad. I thought maybe he had something to do with the land deal the private investigator was researching.
In terms of storytelling, the book had its merits, but I found the narrator to be quite grating. The delivery of the main characters felt oddly middle-aged, and the strained attempt at a New York/east coast accent fell flat for me.
I love Jayden and Zania’s story. From different worlds, a resentful cruel father, Zania found her voice, her reality, herself. She brought Jayden to his reality. Soulmates, love, respect. Too short. I want to know how Karma gets her father.
Quick Summary: A modern day Cinderella story with a just a touch of down home Texas heat
My Review: Cinderella Masquerade by LaQuette was just what the title implies. It was a modern day version of a Cinderella story. This particular retelling happened to include a masquerade themed ball, a handsome, young "prince," and a very accomplished Psy.D whose family treated her abominably.
Cinderella aka The Red Queen: Dr. Zanai James was a little girl lost, after her beloved mother died. She would have disappeared into the background, had it not been for her close friend, Morgan. Zanai's father, stepmother, and step-sisters all but treated her as less than. Soon, however, her life would be transformed in a grand and memorable way.
Fairy Godmother aka The Best Friend: Morgan Grandin could always see the beauty, strength, and brilliance that her best friend possessed. She simply wanted others to see what she saw. With a little bit of maneuvering, Morgan acted as fairy godmother to Zanai, convincing her to attend a ball. This was a special ball that held promise, magic, a prince, and Morgan's very own unfortunate frog.
The Handsome Prince aka Jayden Lattimore: Young and virile, Jayden was a rancher who oozed charm. He was totally over all of the high society stuffiness and preferred to focus on having a good time. He liked to kick back, have fun, and hang with his family. Every thing changed for him the night of the ball. After meeting and losing sight of the mysterious and captivating woman in red, he was willing to search high and low for her, no matter how long it took. All he knew was that he had to embrace his favorite Red Queen once more.
The Texas Heat aka The Chemistry Factor: Zanai and Jayden experienced sparks from the moment they noticed each other. Even though they had known each other for a while, they finally came to a point of really "seeing" each other at the masked ball. Whether they were talking, touching, kissing, or loving, they shared a passion and a hunger that intensified when they were near each other.
The Evil Family aka Cinderella's Tribe: Zanai's family was unjustly cruel to her. They treated her like she was an unwanted burden or a speck of dirt on the canvas of life. Her own father was the worst of all. He was a charlatan who had a weak character, even though he tried to hide it with a domineering bravado.
The Evil Intent aka The Conflict-Drama: The conflict-drama in this story was minimal. Any thing that existed was more so associated with internal character struggles. These struggles carried over into an external manifestation by way of relationships. Self actualization and acceptance were conflict-drama themes, as well.
My Final Say: This romance was creative, sweet, and fiery. I think readers who enjoy fairy tales with a twist and happily ever afters will be thrilled by it.
Rating: 3.25/5 Recommend: Yes Audience: Appreciation is extended to the author, to the publisher, and to NetGalley, who provided access to this title in exchange for an honest review. The words I have shared are my own.
Good Cinderella story. Zanai is a respected psychologist who works with neurodivergent kids from the poorer part of Royal, Texas. She has always been introverted, preferring her books to people, and since her family's moved to Royal from Brooklyn when she was a teen, she's never felt like she fits in. She has one very good friend, Morgan, who sees her for the beautiful, intelligent, and compassionate woman she is. As the book opens, we see Morgan talking Zanai into going to the masquerade ball.
Like Cinderella, Zanai can't believe the difference a makeover has made in her looks and attitude. With her face hidden behind a mask, Zanai is free of her inhibitions, making it easier to dance and flirt with rancher/playboy Jayden Lattimore. Jayden is intrigued by the woman he calls the Red Queen, and when she disappears shortly after their dance, he is determined to find her.
Jayden is a man with a reputation as a player. Lately, he's become bored with the society women who all seem the same and the social events where he sees the same people repeatedly. He wants more, even if he isn't sure what that is. After the ball, he becomes obsessed with finding the woman who captivated him from the moment he saw her.
It was surprisingly easy for Jayden to find her, thanks to some luck. I could feel Zanai's shock at his determination to spend time with her. Between the people who don't bother to get to know her and the emotional abuse heaped on her by her father, Zanai has no belief in her appeal. Though she and Jayden have been acquainted for years, it takes the ball for them to actually see each other. After seeing Zanai at the ball, and then as her usual self, Jayden is determined to make her see that the Red Queen is part of who she is.
I enjoyed the time they spent together. Watching Jayden give Zanai the kind of attention she's never experienced was so sweet. I loved seeing him constantly show her that she's a beautiful, intelligent, and caring person. He is surprised at his growing feelings for her because she's so different from the women he's dated. Zanai is just as drawn to Jayden but wary of giving in to her feelings. It's difficult to believe that he won't get tired of her, just like everyone else in her life. The chemistry between them intensifies as they get to know each other. I love the protectiveness that becomes apparent when Jayden has a run-in with Zanai's father and his heartwarming actions when he tells Zanai about it. I loved how that belief in her changed Zanai's entire outlook and gave her the strength to take charge of her future. The ending was excellent, and I look forward to seeing more of them in future books.
There was a short mention of the ongoing oil rights dispute plaguing the Lattimore and Grandin families. The only new information raises more questions that need answers.
*scroll to the bottom for content warnings* Trope: Cinderella Series or Standalone: can be read standalone but you see characters from other books; #7 in Texas Cattleman's Club: Ranchers and Rivals Series. Texas Cattleman's Club is a Silhouette Desire collection with 17 spinoffs. Each title is by a different author. Cover rating: accurate for the Cinderella outfit/moment Book description accuracy: maybe 50%- the last portion: "With their meddling families causing all kinds of trouble, will Zanai finally go after what she really wants?" isn't accurate and definitely gives a false expectation General review: This was a nice quick read. Glad I read it because it gave me this quote:
"...it angered part of him that people had treated her so poorly, her baseline expectation was that no one wanted to be around her"
I was also surprised at how early H finds out who his Cinderella was- it was a nice change from the usual Cinderella retellings I've read. LaQuette's writing style was a little disjointed for me- I wasn't even aware that both H and h were black until I was a good portion through the book when the dialogue between H's family was what felt like stereotypical "blacks at a BBQ" language. And then that was literally the only scene in the book with dialogue like that. I don't care about skin color- in life or in my reads- but this was just a weird switch it left me feeling awkward and that's what I remember most about the story. Angst style: not really a true angst moment, but if I had to list one misunderstanding POV: 3rd person, both POV Relationship stage reached: moving in together Epilogue? no Content warnings: parent with mental illness, parent death by "accidental" overdose, racism, child abuse by parents I received an ARC in exchange for my fair and honest review.
In one of the chapters, the h talks about how she travelled with her father learning many languages and loving books after her mother died and having private tutors who helped her cope that she wasn't attending school regularly. A couple of chapters later, she talks about how her father had gotten married a year after her mother's death and having half sisters and being left alone by stepmother who didn't care and a father who paid more attention to his new family. The author didn’t pay any attention to continuity and there are a lot of contradictions about h.
She is 28 years and still living in her father’s home. By the end of the book, you come to know that she has been storing her mother’s jewelry, her diplomas and other things in a safe and when she realizes there isn’t any picture of her in the house she goes to confront her father. Why would any woman of 28 who is a practicing PsyD live in her parent’s house and putting up with abuse? Physician heal thyself!
The author portrays H as either seriously enchanted by h on seeing her one minute and in the next minute he is a playboy almost to the point where he unconsciously collects notches without making it obviously offensive for his sisters, mother and grandmother. He comes across as a shallow man who flits through life.
This is my first time reading LaQuette and it won't be my last. This one had so many layers that I appreciated. Meet-cutes are so important to me as a reader. I need it to catch me at that exact moment when I can believe this relationship can happen. I loved the whole scene of Jayden and Zanai at the ball. Zanai was able to leave some of her father's crap behind and seriously have fun. While Jayden was intrigued because the woman he encountered wasn't the usual woman. Zanai challenged him with the banter and left an impression on Jayden. So much so that he was determined to find her. I absolutely loved the play on the whole fairy tale of Cinderella. It was done in such a modern way that it added to the story. I haven't read the other books in this series but I was able to follow along quite easily. Will definitely add the others to my tbr.
I just reviewed Cinderella Masquerade by LaQuette. #CinderellaMasquerade #NetGalley [NetGalley URL]
TW: drug abuse, death of a parent, verbal/emotional abuse from father and step-mother, and self-deprecation,
An enchanting modern day Cinderella twist! With the seventh book in the Texas Cattleman's Club: Ranchers and Rivals series LaQuette picks up the reins and brings us Jayden Lattimore's story. I enjoyed Zanai and Jayden together, but felt like there was a disconnect from a good bit of the continuity saga we have been leading up to as the series has been built and several plot holes on her side of the story that could have been fleshed out more for a smoother storyline. I'm looking forward to the last couple of books in the series to see how it all plays out.
Jayden was a really enjoyable character. He is smooth and dignified and not afraid to show his attraction. I enjoyed his family interaction throughout the book.
I wasn't super fond of Zanai's portrayal. She was supposed to be accomplished and successful, but the fact that she didn't support herself more and stop allowing herself to be mistreated and walked over made her come across as weak and lacking.
I recommend this series as a whole to anyone that enjoys a storyline rich in family saga and happily ever afters.
This is the seventh book involving Ranchers and Rivals and is a great read With a quiet, reticent Dr Zanai James taking the lead. With her father and step mother both denigrating her always She prefers keeping quiet and rarely strays.
However her best friend has other ideas and so To the Masquerade it is that Zanai is to go. Whilst there she catches the eye of Jayden Lattimore They've met a plenty but never spoken much before.
With sizzling chemistry, their attraction is there from the start But Zanai doesn't trust him not to break her heart She's grown up feeling worthless and cannot believe it is true That someone can really see her and grow to love her, too.
What a heartwarming romance this proved to be With family drama and an added mystery. Can love find a way to help bring them together Or will her father split them up forever?
A great story to enjoy and escape into So I have no hesitation in recommending it to you! For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you, I enjoyed reading it and this is my honest review.
The Texas Cattleman's Club series has a new addition by LaQuette. All of these books are written by different romance authors. I just read Vanessa Jared's Got a Man and was excited to see her name on this book.
This was the Cinderella book I needed this week. With the brainy doctor whose friend dresses her up for a masquerade ball where one of the Lattimore's takes notice. He can't stop thinking about her after she drops an earring and when he realizes that his Queen is unassuming Zanai he wants to spend time with her. She isn't the debutante her family and their set want her to be, she's a therapist for neurodivergent youth in the low income area of her community. And omg it's like she's a social pariah. Instead of being proud of her they are disgusted by that. Ugh some people are just trash.
Love how she removes the toxicity from her life once she realizes that she can survive without it. Also, we can all survive without those toxic people in our lives.
Thank you harlequinbooks and netgalley for the e-aRC for my honest and voluntary review.
Thank you to #netgalley and #harlequin for the advanced reader's copy of #cinderellamasquerade by #laquette. This is a remixed version of the classic Cinderella story. This is book 7 of the Texas Cattleman's Club.
Dr. Zanai James feels like a fish out of water at the Texas Rancher's masquerade ball. There she chats with handsome rancher Jayden Lattimore and they share an electrifying kiss. Jayden does not recognize her in her mask so he begins to track down his Cinderella.
Overall this was a cute romance novel. The Cinderella trope regarding Zanai's family was cringe. The main characters were a bit lackluster for me. I found Zanai to be self-depreciating and Jayden arrogant. The spice was hot which I always appreciate. I rate this romance 3 stars.
Cinderella Masquerade was a wonderful read this TCC story introduces us to Dr. Zanai James and Jayden Lattimore. After seeing her at the ball he can't get her off of his mind and has to know who the woman was beneath the mask. Jayden is exactly what Zanai needed to get the strength and courage to stand up to her father and for herself, I loved when she finally stood up to him. Zanai's father was a piece of work couldn't stand him. Jayden and Zanai complimented each other, and the HEA was beautiful. Loved Morgan and her friendship with Zanai! This story created more questions about the oil rights between Grandin and Lattimore families!
