“Heavens to Bribery” by Tonya Kappes the 9th book in her Kenni Lowry Mystery series starring Sheriff Kenni Lowry. It definitely can be read as a stand-alone but I do recommend you start at the beginning.
I love Sheriff Kenni and her ghost Poppa that helps assist in the investigations. But with Finn proposing it could mean the end of her investigating with her beloved Poppa! What a tough decision she has to make which gets further complicated by a murder and an upcoming sheriff election.

There were lots of twists and turns to keep us entertained and guessing. I had no idea who the killer was until Kenni did! Also there were a couple of surprises and I can’t wait for the next instalment!

I highly recommend this book to all my cozy loving friends

I requested and received an Advanced Readers Copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Sheriff Kenni has more than just a dead body to deal with, she has her plate full both personally and professionally . Finn was about to propose when interrupted by a scream for help. This was just Kenni screaming in her head on what to do. If she agrees to marry Finn she may never see her grandpa’s ghost again. The scream came from a dog walker who stumbled upon a dead man. While trying identify the John Doe and solve his murder, she is dealing with her grandpa’s ghost, and the upcoming election season.

I like Kenni. She is a strong southern female, and I don’t mean because she’s a sheriff, because she went against what her southern mama wanted her to be professionally. I think sometimes she doubts herself and relies on her grandpa’s help. This reliance then is holding her back from really being all in with Finn. I like how this book addresses these issues. As for the mystery. Boy oh boy! To say I was surprised by who the killer was is to say the least. I truly never saw that one coming.

I recommend this to fans of cozy mysteries and small-town intrigue. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I have not been influenced by anyone.

This was another good mystery in the series. Kenni's life is getting crazy. Then a body is found by the tracks. She spends her time trying to figure out who did it and why. Of course, she solves it in the end.

Heavens to Bribery Earns 5/5 Proposals…Entertaining Fun!

Another entertaining southern tale from favorite author Tonya Kappes who knows her southern ins and outs to make it all realistic. The Kenni Lowry Mystery series has an engaging premise with Kenni’s late grandfather, and former sheriff, as her unofficial partner while she performs her duties as the current sheriff of Cottonwood, Kentucky. In this ninth book an interesting dilemma is thrown in risking a major change in her Poppa’s continued involvement. Although there are more than enough insights and background provided to bring newbies up to speed, I seriously recommend you read all the books for complete enjoyment. With an intriguing and complicated John Doe murder, exciting investigation and surprise arrest, a highly anticipated proposal with a bit of relationship angst, and enough southernisms to make you feel like an honorary “southern belle,” this is a top favorite!

Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author Tonya Kappes. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

It's been a long wait but finally. Heavens to Bribery by Tonya Kappes is the ninth great mystery with our favorite sheriff Kenni Lowry. So many twists and turns in this series and it's soon election time as well. Will she solve the murder and will she ever get married? Will her poppa disappear when she tie the knot? Well do like I do and get the books and read this entertaining southern mystery series. I haven't tried any of the other series from this author but this one is very good.

What could possibly ruin the moment of being on bended knee to pop the question? A scream!

Sheriff Kenni Lowry pulled away from having to answer Finn Vincent to address Patty Dunaway, who pointed to a body on the train tracks. When it's obvious this was no accident, Kenni gets right to work to find justice.

This murder is posing a lot of questions with very few answers. Since Kenni has little to go on, her rival Taven Tidwell, who's challenging her for the sheriff position, is dogging her every step to document what he views as her failure to keep Cottonwood safe.

Kenni's surprise find sets speculations flying. She has to face a tough decision impacting having Poppa in her life and will need to keep the citizens of Cottonwood in her corner to get their votes. The ending left me shocked and wondering what the future holds for Kenni.

I received an advance reader's copy and voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

I love opening up new Kenni Lowry mysteries, as she is one of my favorite Southern women in Tonya Kappes’s cozy mystery series. I always feel as if I’m along with Kenni, chasing bad guys or visiting with friends, with descriptions so clear I can see and hear almost everything. Kenni is the sheriff in Cottonwood, and a very good one! She has depth of character, maturity, and all the skills taught to her by Poppa, her late grandfather and former sheriff. She understands the locals, respects justice, and won’t swap her principles for anything. She loves what she does as much as she loves the people of Cottonwood.

Kenni always wanted to be in law enforcement, despite Mama wanting her to be a good Southern wife and mother. She is content to be with Finn, the sheriff of nearby Clay’s Ferry, and to work in Poppa’s old office and live in his cozy cottage. Much of the town was with her and Finn the evening that Finn got down on one knee. Before he could get the words out, they heard a huge scream. Following the sound of subsequent screams, they found Patty and the dogs she was walking by the railroad tracks. A man lay dead on the tracks, someone neither Kenni nor Finn recognized. He had been murdered, but thankfully not by the train.

The dead man is Dilbert, ex-husband of Georgina and employee at the drywall plant. He was recently in and out of rehab, but it was rumored that he already jumped off the wagon. He had a note in his jacket pocket that was a kind of clue or riddle. When the labs accompanying the autopsy were done, a poisonous substance was found.

Poppa’s ghost could only be seen or heard by Kenni and Duke, the hound dog he had given her. People have been concerned, especially with this being an election year, about how she seems to talk to herself. It’s better they think that rather than that she is talking with Poppa’s ghost. He is around whenever she has a big case, in part because he still wants to protect her. He had trained her well, as she is fully capable of tracking any bad guy. She knows that, if she were to marry Finn or anyone else, Poppa would not be allowed to spend time with see her. She knows Finn will try to propose again, and she wants to be with him the rest of her life, but it means losing Poppa all over again.

A newcomer is running against Kenni for sheriff. He is young and college educated, but had no law enforcement experience. Taven Tidwell is claiming Kenni is hurting the town and that it is better for a man to be sheriff. He is watching her every investigative move, and often has videos taken and shown on TV with his voiceover of her actions.

Several twists and turns kept me on my toes! I couldn’t grasp whodunit, even though afterward I could remember a couple odd things whodunit said, but they didn’t seem to have a motive. I was satisfied with the solution, but my heart was broken for another situation. Even so, I still can’t wait to go forward and see what happens next! I highly recommend this to those who enjoy well-written Southern cozy mysteries, excellent lady sheriffs, romance, and a Poppa’s love that doesn’t quit.

From a thankful heart: I received a pre-publishing copy of this novel, and this is my honest review.

This is one of my favorite series ever. I suggest that you read these in order, but this can be a stand alone book. You won't want to miss out on any of these! Kenni Lowry is Cottonwood's Sheriff. Her ghost Poppa has been helping her solve murders. If she accepts a marriage proposal from her love, Finn Vincent, will Poppa disappear forever? Who do you want her to choose?!

Summer

This story takes place where the previous book ends. It involves water treatment, poison, photographs, and blackmail. The mystery took a few turns, and some were unexpected. The townspeople are still crazy, but this time it was mostly in the background. The romance had a happy ending, which I wasn't expecting. I hope it doesn't get taken away.

This latest edition in the Kenni Lowery Mysteries felt darker and more drama filled than the previous books in this series. This time as Kenni is trying to solve the latest murder, she is trying to decide if she wants to accept Finn’s marriage proposal, especially if it mean’s losing Poppa again.

To complicate matters further, she has Taven Tidwell doing everything possible to take her job. Kenni must keep her cool, while doing her duty to Cottonwood to solve the murder.

The murder mystery was well developed with pieces of the murder puzzle slowly revealing themselves. I had no idea who the killer was until the last piece of the puzzle was revealed. There were several possible killers and I never suspected the real one.

There were several comical moments in this book, but they weren’t as plentiful as in earlier books in the series. As usual they involved Kenni’s Mama.

I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this book and am definitely looking forward to the next one in this compelling series.

"Heavens to Bribery" by Tonya Kappes is book 9 in the "Kenni Lowry Mystery" series. Kenni has to decide if she should go forward in life and let her Poppa's ghost go forever or if she should put her life on hold to keep him with her. Kenni is also fighting to keep her job as sheriff with the election coming up. This book was a very enjoyable read and had a few funny parts that had me chuckling. It is a good continuing book for this series, and it has you wanting to keep reading. The newest book in the series just came out, so I will be moving on to it soon.

Review:

There are some books (and series) that you cannot wait to read and you know that they are going to be great. That is what is like for me when I have a new Kenni Lowry book to read. I really enjoy ghost stories and this is right up there with some of the best I have read.

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Kenni has a lot on her plate: she has a marriage proposal that she has to consider, her ghostly Poppa to consider and the sheriff's election to consider. When someone is found murdered on the train tracks, she also has a murder to solve. She will need all the help she can get, even the ghostly kind.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. The author knows how to write a Southern mystery that has the feel and charm of the South like she does.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. As I said before, this is one of my favorite series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

It’s really happening everyone, The proposal we have been waiting for is now here. Finn is on bended knee asking that all important question to Kenni. The crowd is waiting for that all important “yes” when a scream is heard. Being the sheriff, Kenni reacts and leaves Finn kneeling without an answer. Whose body is laying on the tracks and why was this person murdered? Looks like the proposal will have to wait as Kenni gears up to solve the mystery.

I adore Kenni’s Poppa and how no one can see him but his daughter, After all, he is dead but is still around to help his pride and joy. I find it comforting that Kenni can still talk to him and rely on him to help her when needed. It makes the story very endearing and cleverly written.

When the person found dead is identified, Kenni knows she is in for an adventure. The wife has just come into the office to make a missing persons report, but had no idea that her husband has already been found. Who wanted Dilbert Thistle dead? One suspect starts to stand out when it is discovered that his ex wife had a protective order against him. Seems odd that she is filing a missing persons report on the person she has a protective order against.

With more twists than a curved road, the author had me glued to the story. Now I always think I can solve a mystery but I rarely do. My list of suspects had been narrowed down, yet I missed some significant subtle hints along the way. The case of Dilbert Thistle was more involved than I realized. With Kenni’s hands full she also has someone trying to undermine her. This certain person wants her job and sure becomes a pest. Oh wait there is one more thing. Does Kenni say yes to the proposal?

I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my own opinion.

I am never disappointed in a book written by Tonya Kappes. She tugs on my Southern heart with her storylines and characters. Sheriff Kenni Lowry has her hands full with the town of Cottonwood. It is a small town, but gossip runs rampant, and her police force is not fully appreciated, especially considering her police force consists of herself and one deputy. The Sheriff's Office is located in the back of a restaurant, Cowboy's Catfish. When an unidentified body is found on the railroad tracks, she knows she needs to hastily solve this crime.

This book and this series are full of high energy characters with Southern sass. Her mother, Viv, is a one woman wrecking show. There is a particularly humorous, albeit embarrassing, scene in the church one Sunday morning, compliments of Mama. This scene caused a complete belly laugh as I imagined the scene in my head.

I applaud Kenni's effort to keep the peace, keep her cool due to the tactics of the egotistical maniac who is running against her for Sheriff and keep her Mama out of her business. This is a fun cozy mystery that will make you chuckle at times. The mystery is very well written as Tonya Kappes does a great job of hiding the true killer. The suspects are many, but the true suspect is always very surprising. So, do not bypass this cozy mystery thinking it is all about sweetness and fun. The mystery is good as well. This is another checkmark in the winner's column for Tonya Kappes.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

small town who can see and talk to her deceased grandfather, Poppa.

Previously, the story left off with Kenni’s boyfriend, Finn, proposing to her in front of a huge crown. Now, she needs to give Finn an answer, and is saved by a death nearby on the railroad tracks. It’s not that she doesn’t love Finn, because she does, but she thinks that if she gets married, then Poppa will disappear.

The mystery of the John Doe on the tracks is his name, how did he get there, and who killed him? I think the suspect poor was good, but the killer is such a surprise that you don’t see it coming—at least I didn’t.

You have to feel for Kenni with the upcoming election because I would suspect that she feels like her world is upside down with people she thought were friends turning on her to vote for the “new flavor of the month.”

My biggest complaint about this series is that the stories are few and far between. It seems like Ms. Kappes writes more in the Camper and Criminals series than this one, which is one of my favorite series of hers. I know she can’t do all the things, but let’s give this series more love. I don’t want to wait another year to find out how the election turns out!

Heavens to Bribery is another exciting installment in Kappes' Kenni Lowry cozy mystery series. The book starts with a bang as Kenni is faced with a marriage proposal from the man she loves but if she says yes she could lose her ghost Poppa all over again. Before she has a chance to respond, a body is found on the train tracks giving Kenni a murder to solve. Adding in a re-election campaign as sheriff going on as well, Kenni has her hands full. Kenni is determined to solve this case to show her town that she is the right choice for sheriff.

Kappes does a great job at grabbing the reader's attention from the beginning with the proposal and keeps that attention throughout the book. I also enjoyed how the proposal made Kenni reflect on what she wants in the future while tugging on her heart at the thought of losing her Poppa all over again. I also enjoyed seeing some great humor mixed in the book along with the book's mystery and Kenni's heartbreaking choice. The book's mystery is well done full of enough twists and turns to keep the reader turning the pages. Overall Heavens to Bribery proved to be a great read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to reading Kenni's next adventure.

A body is found on the train tracks, then a wife comes in to file a missing persons report for her husband Dilbert Thistle. The coroner calls while she’s there and the missing person is the John Doe from the tracks. We find out that the wife reporting him missing is actually an ex-wife and she hid another piece information as well. Bless their hearts, but what on earth is going on here? Add some poison into the mix, and you’ve got a murder.

Meanwhile, Finn proposed to Kenni, but the proposal got interrupted. And Poppa may disappear forever if she says yes. That’s all weighing on her mind as she works to solve the case while she also tries to stay in the town’s good graces as re-election nears, and her opponent Taven Tidwell tries to make her look bad time after time.

Kenni keeps her cool and gets the case closed, but an announcement sends her reeling at the end of the book. What on earth will happen come re-election time? Will Poppa disappear for ever? Only time will tell and now I need to read the next book in the series yesterday!!

This book definitely had more than a few surprises in store for me and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Tonya has another great book for us (as always)! I received an arc copy of this book, but all opinions are my own.

Heavens to Bribery is the ninth cozy mystery in the Kenni Lowry series. Kenni Lowry is the town sheriff as she follows in her Poppa’s footsteps. Her Poppa is the former sheriff and his ghost just so happens to follow Kenni around and help her solve any murder cases that pop up. Kenni’s way of life with her Poppa at her side is at risk when her boyfriend, Finn Vincent, proposes. As she understands it, once she accepts that proposal and moves on with her life her Poppa’s ghost will pass on and Kenni is not sure she’s ready for that to happen yet. The proposal is interrupted by a murder discovery and Kenni gets a little bit of a break while she gets to work solving the case.

I have loved this series from the beginning and was excited to see a few more books were coming out in this series. I am a huge cozy mystery fan and this book has all of my favorite elements, the small town feel, the undertones of romance and the fun mysteries that quickly get tied up in the end. I also really like the aspect of Poppa’s ghost and think it adds so much to this series. This book ends in an almost cliffhanger, so I can’t wait to see what is coming next! If you are a cozy mystery fan and are looking for a fun, quick mystery, give this series a try!

This is the ninth book in the Kenni Lowery series. Kenni has a lot on her plate. In this story, she must catch a killer while being harassed by the next sheriff wannabe. She also must come to grips of what she wants from life. If Finn proposes and she accepts, she believes she’ll lose her ghostly Poppa. What’s a girl to do?

I enjoyed the story, the turmoil and the characters surrounding the death. Kenni needs to sort through her feelings, her desires, and want she wants out of life. From this story, you would believe it’s her mother’s wedding desires not Kenni’s. I believe her mother needs to back off but that isn’t realistic. Her mother could drive Kenni away if not bonkers with her pushing and railroading. Not every daughter wants the things her mother has or to do them dictated by her mother. I know Ms. Kappes will find a resolution that will make Both mother and daughter happy. But that’s a future story.

The characters in this murder are a little shady. I enjoyed every twist and turn of this story. Can’t wait for the next one but know I must.

I was given an advanced copy and am not required to leave a positive review. I chose to do so.

Sheriff Kenni Lowry has her plate so full it has her head spinning. Between the set up for her boyfriend, Finn Vincent to propose, an election year with her opponent, Taven Tidwell and his harassment, the possibility of losing ghost Poppa if she marries Finn and now a murder of a John Doe who was poisoned. When the John Doe was put together as the missing person filed, by his ex-wife Georgina, everything else was put on the back burner until his murder is solved. And we are treated to a plethora of suspects including his ex-wife, a co-worker and his baseball team he plays and drinks with. This is a very fast paced book with so many red-herrings, twists and turns you just can't put it down. Can Kenni get it all straight? Can she capture the murderer? Who wanted the John Doe to die? Did his past problems with people catch up to him. Will Kenni say YES to Finn and lose Poppa to the other side? What will happen to her competition in the race for sheriff? I highly recommend this book as well as the whole series. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

I remember dreaming of my wedding and the proposal from my future husband as a little girl. I would have never imagined, however, the proposal being interrupted by a murder! But that is precisely what happened to Kenni Lowry. Finn proposes, and while everyone is gathered waiting for Kenni's response, a scream rips through the air. As the sheriff, she needs to respond, not to Finn, but to the scream, and she heads into another adventure.

It is not enough that Kenni has a proposal and a dead body, but it is an election year, so she is also keeping her opponent Taven at bay, as well as dealing with the possibility of losing Poppa (her grandfather’s ghost) forever.

This book is a rollercoaster ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat while Kenni works her magic to solve the crime and bring the murderer to justice. The story is filled with wonderful characters and scenic descriptions that will have you immersed in the town while becoming friends with the characters. Now, to wait for the next installment.

I received an ARC and the opinions of the book are my own.

Kenni has a lot on her plate ....if she chooses to make her life with Finn she is loosing her father's ghost who helped her so much in all her investigation....because a supposed heaven rules makes having both forbidden....At the same time someone else is competing to become the sheriff, no matter if Kenni is doing her job well some still prefer a man.

When a scream cut finn's proposal short, She is relieved but only a moment as the scream is related to a murder she must solve. ... She wants to be happy with Finn but not ready to loose her pop once again...then making campaign to keep her job when her palmares should be sufficient....

Poor Kenni has a lot on her plate and i loved this investigation even if i'm super furious at Scott and a bit sad Kenni can't tell the truth to Finn.

I can't wait to see what will happen next, it's a great cozy mystery series with romance, humour and great pets

Let me start by telling you how much I love this series and was so happy to receive this advanced copy and provide a review. Kenni is one of my favorite characters written by Tonya Kappes and this book and series hit the mark in providing a twisty-turny whodunit that will keep you guessing until the end. There is a touch of paranormal included as Kenni's dead poppa appears to guide her toward the right clues in order to solve the mysteries. There is a touch of romance (clean but not mushy) included too, with a satisfying ending that will have you on the edge of your seat wondering how long until the next Kenni Lowry sheriff mystery will be coming our way.
Overall, well written, has great characters, and a totally satisfying cozy sure to please anyone who picks up this book!
This book works as a standalone, but if you haven't read the others, you should. All good reads and worth the time. Completely recommend!

With Vincent Finn on one knee proposing to Sheriff Kenni Lowry before family and friends, the special moment is ruined when a scream fills the air. Being the sheriff means that Sheriff Lowry must find the reason for the scream. Soon she finds that the local dog walker has discovered a body on the railroad track. When her ghost grandfather, Poppa, appears Kenni knows for sure that the person has been murdered. Aware that everyone is watching her since there is an election year and her opponent is watching her every more, Kenni knows she must solve this case quickly while putting the marriage proposal on the back burner. I love the relationship between Kenni and Poppa even though the folks in town think she talks to herself a lot, not realizing that she is communicating with the former sheriff, her Poppa. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.

Finn is on one knee proposing to Kenni, in front of almost everyone in town. She hesitates, but before she can answer there’s a scream, so she takes off running. So much for romance! A local resident walking some dogs found a dead body on the train tracks. Who is it, who did it, and why? It turns out that the dead man is a local resident, but the motive is unknown. Who would want him dead?

As if hunting for a killer isn’t enough, Kenni is also worrying over whether Poppa’s ghost will disappear for good if she accepts Finn’s proposal, it’s election year and Kenni has someone running against her who doesn’t hesitate to make her look bad in front of the entire town.

Kenni and her deputy are trying to solve the crime and prove she’s the right person for the job of sheriff.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Kenni has a lot going on in this adventure. Murder, to be or not to be engaged, and everyone seems to have an angle.
True small town, everyone knows everyone’s business. Loved the characters, they seemed to walk right off the page, or I dived in. It is an election year, and the competition is taking unfair advantage of situation(s) and not above ‘buying’ the vote. During all that drama in her work life, her personal life is also having some challenges and her family isn’t helping.
I loved the twists and turns and Kenni’s heart about confronting people in her town. Secrets and lies abound and Kenni has a secret of her own. A lot of who can I trust and even at the end, it was a hard hit. I stayed up late and couldn’t put it down and was sad to see this adventure end. Cannot wait for the next adventure. My vote is Kenni, for sheriff.

Gotta say, I really really love Kenni Lowry and her town, even with people like that daffy Mayor.
He’s the kind of person that makes you think of a dozen insults before you pretend to smile and say hello. Everyone else in town (except the Mayor’s wife) makes up for him though.
Kenni’s mother always makes me smile, doesn’t like the profession Kenni is in, but she’ll fight tooth and nail to get her girl re-elected.
This murder was way different and took several twists and turns before Kenni figured out who the murderer was. I really felt sorry for the murderer and if it hadn’t been bad news for Kenni I would have wished for him to escape. But that would look awful on Kenni’s record, that that dumb Taven would probably win the election.

YES - Kenni and Finn are engaged, but much more original than I thought they would be. Can’t wait for the next book!
