African Savanna by Donald Silver is a nonfiction picture book about life on the savanna. This book talks about various aspects of life on the savanna including the trees, underground animals, rain patterns, grasses and feeding patterns, predatory animals, night animals, and predators in the water. This book teaches about many different animals and how the life cycle in the savannas go. I enjoyed reading this book. It was very factual and had a lot of information on every page. My favorite thing, however, was that this book followed to life cycle of every animal and how it is connected to each other. The pictures were also very bright and vivid and fun. I would have this picture book in my class as a free read book. I think it would be good for children who have an interest in savanna life and animals. I also would use this book for research if the students ever had to use a book to talk about the savanna or animals in this area of the world.
This is a pretty meaty book. I wouldn't recommend choosing it for a bedtime story unless you have a few hours. My 4yo was not interested in it at all but my 6yo kept requesting pages to be read. There was no way I was able to read it in one sitting before bed. She did love it and is now running around pretending to have a warthog. I imagine I'll be reading pages from it again.
