After undergoing training in the Ranger class, Bran must now begin his Mage training. With Lara to tutor him, he expects to level far faster than he did as a Ranger. But there are more mysteries to be uncovered at Ketria Academy, ones that will shock Bran to his very core.
And someone already knows the answers to these mysteries. Someone who would very much like to use Bran for their own ends.
Summoner’s Shadow is a LitRPG series that occurs in a medieval fantasy world. Bonding with monsters grants a summoner special abilities, dictated by the monster type and their class. Monsters can be leveled up, augmented, and evolved.
Wowserz! Bran's origins totally blew my mind. I love companion stories like this, and the fact summoner's get more than one animal/monster to bond with kicks major gonads. And my goodness, poor Lara. Talk about family issues.
The action in this second book picks up from the first book, but there are still too many holes left unwritten and unknown: Cereal/Crow Bran's past, family, purpose and future...So, in this second book Bran, the main character, gets stronger and receives artifacts that can permit more summoned monsters to be managed. Bran still does not have real meditation/cultivation/martial arts training. I hate it when I read reviews and they mention "Mary Sue", to describe a character that is Over-Powered (OP) but never really learned or met the conditions (education/practice process) to properly learn those skills and abilities. Bran attends a Summoner Academy that apparently has no classes, no teachers, no real courses...In this novel series, Bran doesn't really learn anything, and is just OP. Story is okay. It is positive that there is no extreme violence, no adult situations, profanity, etc. but the story still needs to explain everything that is missing. In the first book, there were only three things that the author wrote about Bran (1) veteran soldier with physical scars that fought with a spear, 2) Bran was an orphan and does not know, does not remember much about his parents, got a summoner necklace from his "mom", 3) is 25 years old. Everything else (physical-personality-etc) is left unwritten by the author. How can there be an investment into a main character that is so unknown and descriptively weak? Can a character that is so thinly described carry a multi-book-fantasy novel series? So he is a summoner that is OP, has a ton of abilities that no one else has, but if he passes anyone on the street no one is going to know who he is, because the author never really described/developed the main character. Main character Bran, doesn't even have a last name, physical-emotional-etc descriptors. No one knows about his values, moral compass, likes-dislikes, etc. how he dresses, what he looks like, weight-height-hair color-eye color-etc. I mean no basic information about a main character, at all... I cannot imagine how the illustrator of the cover of the book series (cause it's always the same cover for all three books published "imagined" a main character, that has no written description "at all". So much so, that guy on cover could be somebody else, first book guy on cover, doesn't look like second book guy on cover, first one uses a kind of spear (although used a bow in first book, used a spear before as a soldier), second book guy uses a bow, but one would think that it could be somebody else, and third book guy on cover doesn't really dress like a purple Jedi (at least not written like that ever in either of the first 2 books in the series). So illustrator let his imagination run wild, cause there is really no written basis in the story to describe the main character...
Bran and his team search for a way to stop Volrath.
Wow! A FannnFriggenTastic litRPG adventure. Because soooooooo may of the books are available, it's the perfect time to dive into and binge read! Maybe a staycation?!? Bran and his two tutors, plus a tag-along make quite a team as they search for a way to stop Volrath's evil machinations! Along the way they might even save the Shadow Kingdom from destruction. And Training is still Bran's middle name. Boy, oh boy did Bran train! Leveling bimself and his Beast Companions. Pus his team leveled along side. Let's talk about the things that Summoner's Shadow does that I love. First I love Summoners! Then there's the academic setting although I hafta admit they don't spend a lotta time in the school it's the feel. And best of all there's all the Beast Companions they're like the icing on the most delicious cake!!! So yeah grab this action-driven litRPG and binge read!
The main character is impossible to like. I tried to give it a chance after book one but I couldn't get even half way through. He comes off as entitled yet thinks he is the average guy. He thinks he is owed everything from everyone and simultaneously looks down on summoner band pretends he's still just the stable hand looking at them as gods. The power structure in the book is massively inconsistent. The main character and his monsters struggle with level 8 monster yet when he fights the level 20 he is the only one left standing????? Its so inconsistent it takes you out of the story. This book needs massive revisions on character development because you can't have a main character who is so unlikable. I ended at the shadow city where he is asking shade why did you brings us here, like he's blaming the monster when the monster clearly communicated (multiple times) not to attack.
Another great installment in Bran’s story as he discovers what he is
Bran has discovered and begun mastering his abilities and the powers granted by his classes. First Ranger, then Mage, and then Beastmaster as his friends and an old classmate of Alaro joins them on a chase that will take them out of the mortal realms for much longer than they ever imagined. While in the shadow lands they meet a king and agree to his quest to save his people. Bran also learns that his first tame, Shade, was sent to him by the king. He learns quite a bit about his abilities as well as what he is and what a Worldbreaker represents. A bridge between summoners and monsters. Read on for some wild new adventures in the realm of shadows.
Bran and his friends go from training his abilities to helping a town ravaged by an open portal from a monster realm. The town was the same Bran lived in and over 100 people killed, several he knew. While fighting an evil Summoner, they and a soldier, get stuck in Shadow Monster Realm. The Shadow King captures them and Bran finally learns of his title, Worldbreaker! The King gives Bran a quest and allows them all to train and use the Shadow Library to determine how to create portals, because an open portal to the human world is killing the shadow monster.... The battle to closevthe portal is fun too.
The world building and magic system are fantastic. The combat scenes feel like they are written by a pacifist with no clue what he is doing. The story is interesting enough that I want to keep reading but the fight scenes are absolutely horrendous and since there is a lot of conflict in the book there are a lot of fights. There isn’t a lot of thinking in fight and hesitation will get you killed or worse your buddies. Also someone tell the author arrows will kill you please.
A lot of training at leveling up in this one and A lot of new revelations about Brans Heritage. There is a new addition to the team And as usual a lot more work to do. They must level up and get stronger for there is war. Bran learns more of his powers and has to use all his wiles to overcome the leveled enemies in his path. I look forward to the revelations in the next book.
Brand training as a mage is rudely interrupted by events in Ealdor, then he gets to visit the Shadow Realm. We get a nice little time skip and some cool level ups, and then we find out if Bran can stop Volraths dastardly plans! We do get some answers for the things hinted at in the last book as well as the setup for future books. A fun read, and I can’t wait to see what Brans final monsters will be! I’m still hoping for a dragon!
A fun read, most of my questions were kind of answered but plenty still remain, from book 1 and now book 2.
There was some decent character development this time and too and from from other characters but it seems hollow in some of the main characters, just a sentence here and there depicting their feeling. But I've never given up reading so I'm enjoying the story so far.
I skimmed a lot of the monotony. I didn’t need to read the three paragraphs, multiple times, that describes the same things in different words. Authors, please stop have the character name/identify something then immediately after call it “so-called.” It is/was called. The character did so themselves.
This story has a strong and likable and heroic mc. His party has continued to develop from the first story. There is so much more to learn about this world. I kinda wish the mc had a wise sage to guide him but I am content to wait for the next book. I recommend this and the first book.
For a long time now I've been reading a lot of LitRPG books. It's to a point now that they are all starting to be the same and boring. This book has something new and interesting. I really enjoyed this series, well the first two books anyway and I can't wait to start the third book. I give this series two thumbs up.
I am not a fan of the writing style of DB King, I feel after 2 books I still don't know what the characters look like. I can't picture them in my head, or feel like I know them. The story is good, but I feel so-so about the characters. I might have given to high a rating, but I am going to read the next in the series.
DB King continues to rock! Think Harry Potter with a twist.
Strong MC & supporting characters. Unique magic system and monsters. Well presented storyline. It's not a harem story. The main characters are under 25 years old, but the books, at least so far, are for adult readers. I'm getting book 3 as soon as I finish writing.
A great completion of the adventure. The writer was able to give each character a distinct personality. Well written and we'll edited. Hopefully the author will continue their adventures. If so we'll probably find out the origin of the worldbreakers.
I absolutely LOVE this book. I’ve read and listened to many LitRPG books and this one is unique and different. I’ve read both books already and cannot wait for the third book to come out in August.
Foreshadowing (ha! See what I did there?) is a little heavy but in this case I can see how it's necessary so it doesn't get lost in all the action. That doesn't mean everything is revealed before it happens though. Plenty of surprises to keep me on the edge of my Kindle!
