A surprise birthday cruise for Mitch Cannon’s seventy-year-old mother sets the week in motion.
Mitch had been nominated by his sisters to escort their mom, Mary, on the trip. Feeling railroaded into the task, Mitch is angry, especially since a new case has come up involving a criminal Mitch had a history with, someone who’s just shot three people.
Reluctantly, Mitch goes on the trip, and an uncomfortable rift exists between him and his mother. She knows he didn’t want to go on the Riviera Maya cruise, but they soon find out that their personal problems are the least of their worries.
Unknown to Mitch, the man he’s been after was aware of his every move, and the next six days are something that Mitch, Mary, and most other people would be lucky to even live through.
C.M. Sutter was born in San Jose, California and split time between the sunny California coast and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a senior in high school, she chose Wisconsin as her permanent address. After many years in the Badger State, she decided on a warmer year-round climate to call home and moved south. Years of progression took her from working in large companies, to twelve years as a massage therapist, and finally, owning a corporation. She has been self-employed for over twenty years. Ms. Sutter has been writing and self-publishing since 2014 with eleven titles published in a different genre. Because of her deep interest in crime and thriller novels, she took up writing in the police procedural/crime thriller genre in 2016.
Well … I hate it when main characters act foolish and irrational. People makes mistakes - OK that’s something that happens and hopefully it teaches us a lesson. This novel is just one big mistake form start to end.
Mitch Cannon which we have come to learn of in the two previous novels is sent out to hunt a killer who has escaped to Mexico. As we know Cannon is a detective in the homocide department in Savannah. There’s nothing to investigate as the killer of two kids and their mother has been shot and everyone knows who has done it. Nevertheless Cannon is asked by his boss to help tricking the killer to reveal his position while Cannon is on a holliday cruise with his mother. Some time during this Cannon really fucks up and is being captured in Mexico by the killer. And now it get’s really annoying. The best thing Cannon and hos mother can do is obviously to “pray” - as if a god who has put the two in the hopeless situation suddenly should change his mind and let them escape. to add to the unrealistic plot both some agents from Savannah PD and some FBI agents are just running around in Mexico and doing police work as if they were home in US.
The other Mitch Cannon novels so far has been OK and contained some exciting events so you had to stick around to the end to learn how everything adds up. But this one with it’s over religious views and the overwhelming amount of unrealistic events is not on the same level. I would not recommend it unless you really want to know what’s happening in Cannon’s family.

First of all, I gave this book a pass because it is an easy read and mostly entertaining. The locations in the book are well- described and well written.
The reason I rated this book so low is because I wonder if a lot of thought went into it before writing it. The characters make the most stupid decisions: 1) Mitch mistakenly texting the guy he is chasing. I mean, that is just next level stupid and would never happen. 2) Mateo wanting ransom money FROM THE POLICE?? I mean, he's an infamous drug leader who just got released from prison and is on the run for killing three people AND kidnapping a detective and his mom. He surely wouldn't be that stupid to then go ask the police (???) for money. Why would anyone ever do this and think it would work? He's known for killing everyone that gets in his way, but the detective that locked him up repeatedly in the past gets spared...
The thing that mostly sets me off in this book is how the dialogues are written. This was a problem in book 1 and book 2 as well. Nobody talks like that. The dialogues between police officers are so extremely cringe. Quotes such as: 'Let's throw his ass in jail' or 'His ass should be in jail, where he belongs' are repeated so much and again: NOBODY TALKS LIKE THAT. When in Mexico, the stereotypes are all over the place. Friends of Mateo only get called 'amigos' and every Mexican in the book acts the same way, doing stereotypical Mexican things.
The author really has something here. She clearly knows how to write and establish good settings for the book, but honestly... there should go more thought in decisions made by the characters and dialogues. If you wouldn't say something in real life, then why use it in a book...
Book 1 was worse than this one. book 2 was a big big step up and very promising. Book 3 was a letdown again..

A violent Mexican drug criminal is released from prison and immediately goes to shoot his girlfriend and her two kids. With the help of his friend Luis, he escapes to Mexico. Meanwhile Mitch is booked on a Mexican cruise with his Mom. Mitch's boss Royce tries to kill 2 birds with one stone and tasks Mitch to trap him on his trip.
This is my 4th Mitch Cannon book and I have to admit, it's an acquired taste. The plots aren't that great and are a bit simplistic, or amateurish to be blunt. The writing isn't sophisticated but easy to read and follow. There are a few lapses in logic and you have to strain your credulity a bit at times. Everything is done on easy mode. They're my guilty pleasure. OK, that's all the cliches out the way but it pretty much sums up the series and the writing.
There's a bit of unnecessary dialog, like the author will go through the whole gabble of Mitch and his boss getting coffee including thanking each other, instead of just writing that they got coffee. The ending of this book was a bit superfluous too and overly long.
I'm on the last book now and actually looking forward to trying the author's other series to see if they are any better.
Since GR doesn't list the entire 5 books in this series, here they are in chronological order: Run For Your Life Fight For Your Life Pray For Your Life Beg For Your Life Fear For Your Life
I have enjoyed all of the authors previous books. But this one in my opinion was just to predictable made me just want it to end. I understand fiction is made to entertain. But this is just fantasy. In no stretch of imagination would Mitch and his Mother have survived five minutes alive with Mateo in that jungle. Even though I didn't like this book I'll still buy the next.
Cannon has to be the dumbest detective ever. Who makes such an idiotic mistake by not only texting a message to the person he’s tracking, but offering all the information as to where he’s at to his boss who should know all this or have ways to obtain it. Why send a detective to Mexico who’s on a vacation with his mother to track down a US criminal. It was totally unbelievable. Also, how much coffee can these characters really drink?
And there were a few prayers said in some very difficult times as Mitch and his 70 yr. old Mom were captured and mistreated by drug lords. Another good example of law enforcement agencies working together to rescue them. One question I have is will Devon and Marie ever "get together"?
Ten stars is not enough for this book it should be at least twenty stars CM is one terrific author I loved this book could not put it down I highly recommend this book to everyone Dorothy Schaefer

Pray for Your Life is a real action packed thriller written by C. M. Sutter. I was glued to my seat through this story and was wondering how the wonderful characters were going to escape the evil monsters to return to their family and normal lives. Such a great story filled with all emotions.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.
Book 3 of this series. This time, Mitch and his mom go on a cruise to celebrate her 70th birthday. Things don’t go as planned and they get kidnapped by some drug dealers.
I don’t even know if this is one ⭐️. It was bad. It took me soooooo long to get through simply because I didn’t want to read it. I don’t recommend. This series is all all alllll done for me now.
Wow! Wonderfully written book (and excellently edited). Will keep you guessing and sitting on the edge of your seat. Another great read by C. M. Sutter!
